Fujitsu and Sony announced Crusoe Notebook

Morning from Japan This morning Fujitsu and Sony both announced the release of the notebooks that uses Transmeta's Crusoe CPU. Of which, many of you are more interested in Sony's Vaio C1. Sony Vaio C1 comes with Windows ME, 128Mb SDRAM (x1), 12Gb HD, 8.9 inch Ultra Wide XGA 1024x480 TFT, 56kbps moden, and the rest of Sony stuff. They uses Crusoe TM 5600 600MHz on 100Mhz system clock, so it's kinda fine I guess. The machines lasts 5.5 hours on small battery, 11 hours on large one, and 20 hours on real large one (rofl!) Disappointing about this performance? The first sales at Akihabara - Tokyo's Eletronic Town - comes on 7th October. People predict the price of 230,000 yen - GBP 1,500.00, without 5% Consumption Tax. Fujitsu one's almost the same expect it comes with DVD but TM 5600 540Mhz. And the price's the same. Book Bonanza

Ok, perhaps an exaggeration, but I've just received a mammoth tome, "Linux IP Stacks Commentary" as a free gift from CoriolisOpen Press. It's basically 500 pages of IP stack code printed out, with another 200 of discussion at the back. The discussion seems to be quite interesting and entertaining, but the whole thing is based around 2.0.36. I don't know how much the IP stack has changed since then, but there is no mention of IPv6, for example. Anyway.... the book is here, if you're interested in reading it, let me know before the next ALUG and I'll make sure it's there. If you want more info on Coriolis books, see www.coriolis.com . I've always used commercially-produced CDs (ie Boxed) to do installs. Could anyone help with a sound recording problem?

I am running Debian 2.2, kernel 2.2.17pre6 and a SoundBlaster Live using the Creative/Emu module. Try as I might I cannot record anything! When I say I cannot record I mean that, although I can create a file by using something like Gramofile, Sound-recorder or KRecord, when it is played back it produces silence (not a scientifically accurate statement)! If I boot the machine into Windows 95 (shudder!!!) I can record and playback successfully and I can play the recorded .wav file back using Linux. The recorded file produced by Linux also produces silence under windows. I have tried recording as a user and as root - no difference. /dev/dsp has rw permission for owner and group. Anyone want a recording of silence? Barry Samuels

OK LinuxNewbie.Com is live... Yes it does exist :-). I'd appreciate some real testing by you guys including some feedback. I'm quite interested in how large/small the fonts look to you from various browsers in various platforms (Windows included). Unfortunately it's a bit hit-and-miss as to which browsers/platforms a problem with large text occurs. Anyhow, give it a look over (mainly for bugs) and hopefully you'll all feel an urge to contribute some content, perhaps even become a full staff member (voluntary, of course ;). I am in #linuxnewbie on irc.openprojects.net most sane hours (and a number of insane hours...), so come on by and talk. I look forward to your feedback... ALUG-IRC becomes a regular event

Well, at ALUG-40 today, everyone there thought that making the IRC meetings a regular event was a good idea, so please join us online at 2000 (8pm) each Monday evening, on OpenProjects IRC. Server names include hogan.openprojects.net, eu.openprojects.net and irc.linux.com, but make sure to use port 8001. IRC clients include epic4, BitchX (console), kirc, kvirc (KDE), x-chat, yagirc (gnome), tkirc and netplug (Tcl/Tk) amongst many others. ALUG-IRC3 -- The Venue Finder

I regret to say that I won't be able to be online for this week's IRC meeting, as I'll be somewhere with no net connection until Tuesday. If someone could keep a log and send me the file, I'll process it and post it up as before. The last two IRC meets have mainly concentrated on the website. However, I think that's now under control, so it would be more useful if this week's meeting could try to find us a venue for September's meeting ;-) We're really stuck with UEA, being between arrivals weekend and fresher's weekend, so anywhere with tables, electricity and possibly a nearby bar would be welcome. -- MJR

All, So what kind of capacity does the meeting require? Does the venue require a connection to the outside world? Is there a group defining group config before the event such as DHCP setup etc. to save time on the day. Is there an agenda, other than fix web site? What is the duration of the meeting? A norwich or north norfolk meeting is good for me, does anyone else have a preference? What is the general consensus of opinion on last Mondays IRC meeting, was it a success, is it worth doing again? If so is it worth doing it between meetings? I thought it went fairly well with at least some of the pressing items coming up for discussion so maybe... Who is coming on Sunday and what are you bringing? I know we are trying to sort out the web site and other mundane admin stuff. So far the only requests for Sunday have been Terry Filby, who wants some assistance getting anything to work on his desktop box and me, I could use a little help with lilo on 'rodney'. Cheers, BJ

My first ALUG meeting was at Aylsham when Andrew Savory very kindly put a Debian distro on my Packard Bell Executive, not without problems, but he, unlike myself, had the experience to get out of them, it was fine for a month or three, and then I tried to upgrade it, but only succeeded in mucking the installation up - I have tried several distro's since then, all with no success, apart from Lnx4Win from Mandrake which, of course, runs on the window partition, so no problem, though it wasn't as good or as fast as a dedicated partition for it. I have recently bought a 2nd-hand Thinkpad 560E with Mandrake 7.0 installed on it for me, but I would still like a 'proper' distro, preferably Debian, as I was very much impressed with the one Andy put on, but I have several other distro's on CD, including Suse 6.4 and all the Linux Format cover disks plus others. I would like, if possible - and if someone could install it for me - to bring my computer to Sylham next Sunday along with all of my distro's if needed, I have 3 CD's of Debian, but would like the latest one if I can. Web Server help

Everyone I e-mailed some time ago about setting up a web server with my laptop with windows98 AMD K6 475 and my Cyrix Computer 300 processor which was running Red Hat 6.0 but is now running Mandrake 7.1 After some good advice I am planning to buy 2 network cards it was just the next bit that confused me compile the appropriate kernel modules and link them together with a special Ethernet cable called a "crossover" cable (which is designed for linking two machines direct to each other). The above paragraph does not mean much to me I know my Laptop has to be linked to my Computer via cabling but what's this bit about kernel modules? Sun Monitor

Calling all Aluggers I have a 20 inch SUN monitor GDM-20D10. The base bit is missing, as is the remote control. It also has that weird SUN video plug, but you can get converters. As far as I know, it works. I don't want it, and I also don't want to take it to the tip. So.... If anybody wants it, they can have it for free. First come, first served. Forthcoming ALUGs: Pre-organisation

I was about to send a email to a few people about the next few ALUGs, but then I seemed to add so many people that I might as well use the list and involve everyone, I though. Next three meeting dates are: Aug 20, Sep 17, Oct 15 (all Sundays). August: can we return to Syleham again, John? Adam, will you be able to show off Zeus to us slobbering webmonkeys? September: We really really need a new location for this one. This is undergraduation weekend at UEA, which is a really really bad time to try to get a room or anyone with any time to organise anything. If it is at UEA, it would definitely need putting back a week. October: Martyn, if the speaker from SuSE is available, we should be able to arrange a room at UEA, maybe even one of the nicer lecture theatres, although we might have to beg contributions to meet the cost if they insist on charging. If he is available, can you mail me with what facilities he needs and I'll try to arrange this ultra-early so we can get extremely good publicity out there. The rest of you 'orrible lot could volunteer for various aspects of promoting these events, producing posters, taking a few to computer shops in your area and mailing the details to various websites and magazines. Most of that needs to wait for confirmed details, though. Anyone with time more immediately could step forwards to help with the website. As soon as we get *something* up, we'll start keeping a "volunteers" page where you can say you'll do stuff, to avoid duplication of effort and the bad memories of the veterans :)

ALUG web site

Hi, I've been giving some thought to the ALUG web site situation, and was wondering if anybody thinks that it might be a good idea to utilise the Slash code (http://www.slashcode.com) as the basis of the site that will enable several moderators to post articles, meeting stuff, etc. We're using it quite succesfully at my work as an internal news system for the company and it's working very well. A group of us post the main articles, which then allow other staff to add comments. Very impressive. Let me know what you guys think. Regards, Martyn

Everyone Has anyone got any advice on modems for Linux, I did have a 28.8 modem which worked fine with my Windows95/Linux dual boot after exchanging with a friend i now have a 56.6 internal modem that doesn't work with linux. Are there any good sites on the net I could buy from I'm not too worried about the speed I just want it to work! On another subject any advice on setting up a web server or maybe a network since I have just bought a laptop with windows98 AMD K6 475 and would like to work it with my Cyrix Computer 300 processor which is at the moment running Red Hat 6.0. What are the options with this and is there one better than another and cost wise will I need anything extra as I don't have network cards or anything like that. Regards Scott P.S. Does anyone know of any Linux groups in Bury St Edmunds or local as I don drive and though I am not an expert i would like to learn more.

USB and Linux

Hi, I've got a AMD K6-III using an VIA Apollo chipset. I'm running kernel 2.4.0-test1. I'm trying to make my USB devices work. I've created /dev/usb/lp0 and /dev/usb/scanner Reading through the output of dmesg, it correctly reports finding my Agfa 1212U scanner and my Epson Photo 750 printer, But when I try printing or scanning, bugger all happens. When scanning I get a USB Bulk mgs timeout error. Any ideas??? Anglian Linux Users Group proudly present "ALUG The Underpromoted" Union House, UEA, Norwich 1400, Sunday 23 July Well, in the absence of the hoped speaker, this has degenerated into a meeting which will include: Network games xblast - 8-player multi-system bomberman-style lxdoom - the classic probably quake variants, if we get them working again probably some spiffy 3d stuff too and some SDL-based games, if we find some worth playing Games will either be on a local file server, or not need installing on client machines <g> ALUG website and email hosting where shall we put it? who will help? when do we move it? Next two meetings: Deadlines for confirming outside speakers so we don't end up in this state again. Appointing organisers? Directions should be on the website from past meetings at UEA, as this is in the same place. We have an 8-port hub available, but we are short of network cards and patch leads, so please bring them along with your machines and power cables. Well, the main thing to remember is that the Palm, Handspring and the newer Sony clones all use different add-on formats, although adapters for some connectors are now becoming available (according to Palm Tipsheets). Pick the one that has the right add-ons that you think you might want. On the Linux end, I have coldsync working well with a serial cradle. I don't know if USB works as well, as I don't have that. ;-)

Yes, it's Sunday 23rd July. Suggestions for what to do welcomed. I'd suggest that we try network games, as there's not going to be much life on campus to impress with wonderful science. If we do go for that, can people suggest good network games, so we can install them and then not worry about an external network? I'll start off by suggesting Dumb, the doom engine with the sanest net play. (Search freshmeat for it.)

Missing hdd

Another poser for the smart ones out there. :-) When I boot from a floppy I can see all my drives but booting from the /boot partition one of my IDE channels is invisible. The bios sees it but Linux does not. It isn't reported in the boot message that flashes past at break neck speed! I presume this is a kernel thing but the kernel image on the floppy should be the same as the image at /boot. They were both created when I installed, I haven't been fiddling, honest guv! Cheers, BJ

Heh, typical. When I return to my office having just put the meeting back a week because no-one had objected, I didn't think there was sufficient time to publicise it, let alone organise it properly, then I find that some people have preferred to keep it this weekend. DOH! Well, sorry to those few, but it was remarkably quiet before that, so ALUG 13 is on Sunday 23rd July at 1400 in Union House at UEA. A full announcement will follow just as soon as Martyn can confirm the speaker and any facilities needed to me. Hopefully some posters will be made as soon as possible and people can help put them around local computer shops and community notice boards. MJR, again picking up the torch for an ALUG meet

Folks, I just logged onto our firewall box for my periodic peruse, and I noticed that the /var/log/messages file, created on 28 Jun is 0 bytes long. All the permissions, ownership and so on seem to be ok, and it certainly used to log stuff. Any ideas as to why it should stop logging? What's a good basic X news client? KRN is pretty basic Netscape is well Netscape really... It must support multiple nntp servers though! Don't really want to use a console but I will if I have to. Gentus/downloads and update on 'rodney'

Update on my system. I have Gentus Linux 2.6 up and running on 'rodney' at last. The 675Mb download took over my only link to the outside world for about 30 hours but Windows IE5 and Gozilla managed it without any hitches, except I had the download manager set to redial to a 1p per minute number instead of my 0800 access so I've got to stump up for 11 hours of it at 1p/min. :-( Gentus found my ATA66 controller and promptly kernel panicked, bugger. After much jiggling about with drives, my 17Gb ATA66 Maxtor positively will not reside on the same channel as my 40Gb ATA66 Maxtor, strange. Anyway configuration is now as follows you'll see why its a little awkward: UDMA33 channels IDE0 AOpen 10X DVD IDE1 HP 24X4X4 re-writer IDE3 LS120 IDE4 250Mb Zip ATA66 chanels IDE5 Maxtor 17Gb ATA66 (Win 98 boot) IDE6 IBM 37.5Gb ATA66 (MP3s etc.) :-) IDE7 Maxtor 40Gb ATA66 (More MP3's etc.) IDE8 Segate 6Gb UDMA33 (Linux) hdh1 25Mb </boot> hdh2 [Linux extended] hdh5 128Mb <swap> hdh6 5846Mb </> All this dangling of a 250W power supply! We have removed our central heating system because the power supply glowing is plenty to heat the whole neighbourhood. Gentus seems to be RH6.2 optimised for Abit motherboards no extra goodies unlike Mandrake. But it works so now all I need is some SCSI storage to complete my project. :-) Now the problem I have is the dreaded LI at the lilo prompt. Lilo resides in the MBR of the windows boot drive. Apart from the obvious linear option has anyone got any ideas because I'm fed up with booting from a floppy. Cheers, BJ

fortunately the version I'm using allowed me to log on as single. (Mandrake 7) so it is all sorted now, but thanks for your suggestions and help. now prevent someone else doing it to my system, I need to know how to disable it..... Gentus Linux

Those of you who were at the last meet at Syleham will recall the difficulty I had getting Linux to install with my Abit BE6 motherboard's ATA66 IDE controller. Gentus Linux http://www.gentus.com/ seems to be an answer to this problem, a Red Hat based distro from the makers of the offending motherboard specifically targeted at the ATA66 IDE controller problem. I'm downloading it at the moment 675Mb over 56k modem link! So anybody trying to give me a voice call expect an answer sometime after Euro 2004. :-) Cheers, BJ

We would like to publish a regular monthly user group section with information about forthcoming meetings, conferences and so on. I would be grateful if you could provide me with this information. The first issue of Linux Magazine will be the October issue and will be published in September, so information relating to the second half of September and all of October will be relevant, as well as other events that require advance booking. Hi, I've stuck the most recent photos of our last Alug meeting on my own, Red Hat server box running Zeus at:- http://www.bleeding-edge.net/alug/photos If things should go ahead for a meeting on the 19th July at UEA (at 2pm as a rough guide), Roger Whittaker has stated that it is very possible for him to do it at that date and time. There is an electrical shutdown at UEA this weekend, so the Student Union mailserver will be offline for the duration. This happens once a year and should not actually be visible other than a slight delay on list traffic (but I'm just announcing it so that you know why it's slow). If it's like last year, services may be restored by Sunday lunchtime. MJR
