Broken emailer

My e-mailer has stopped working, could it be something simple like an internal fuse, I have spare units from which I can cannibalise any thing I need. Would appreciate any help. Paul

Hi, Bought an E3 back in 2008 Not done much with it till now. Wanted to start developing on it again but the files on the ftp server are only up to 2.6.19 and muru only has upto 2.6.27. Can anyone provide me with the latest kernel patch / buildroot config files?

Resurrecting old e-mailers‏?

Hi guys,I've 3 x E3 e-mailers and 2 x second generation e-mailers. Can they be made to operate as normal phones, i.e. is there any way around the registration issue? When powered up, I'm frozen out until I register the units, which of course is no longer available. Any suggestions? Your reply would really help, one way or another, as I'm on the point of binning all of them. It just seems a pity. Thanks guys James D

Building a new kernel

I have got an E3 and I managed to flash on it linux following the instructions I found on the web. Next step to make it an useful device I need to be able to tweak the kernel and prepare applications for it. I therefore decided I will try to build a kernel from openembedded as described in the documentation I found. I am trying using openembedded classic not core. I am having some difficulties as it seems that the relevant files are not up to date with the rest. Has anybody successfully built a kernel recently? Greetings Filippo

I've got an amstrad emailer em2001uk that is locked up and unusable - 'Hold down (email) button to restore service', so I'm here as a beginner to see what I can do about it. All I want is to use it as an ordinary phone. I know my way a bit around a linux pc if that helps. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, Looking for some help with an Amstrad E3 I was given recently. I'm a computer technician, but have very little experience with Linux based systems ( all our systems at work are Windows). I was looking for a small screen to fit in the Comanche helicopter cockpit simulator I'm building. All it has to do is display some web pages and change them based on about 8 different key presses. I have set up a machine with Ubuntu on it and it is talking to the E3. I followed the instructions here http://wiki.earth.li/E3_Getting_Started and everything went fine until the last "bootm" command. It did give a lot of info about the image but didn't end with a shell prompt. Instead I get a message: " kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root FS on unknown block(1,0)" I do get the "penguin" and a load of text on the E3 screen before the error, so I rekon I'm not far away. I've also tried the system from 2.6.16 here http://the.earth.li/pub/e3/ with exactly the same results. Can somebody advise what I'm doing wrong please ? Many thanks in advance, Andy

pbltool problem

Hi again, I've got some free time today and have been playing with the emailer again. I've managed to build a 3.6 kernel a while ago but when I tried to upload the V2 stuff I had problems. Today I made up a new cable thinking that might be the issue, but it hasn't helped. I can get a boot log just fine, but when I run pbltool with "sudo ./pbltool -f /dev/ttyUSB0 oe-install.pbl" I get: Prodding... Handshaking... Done handshaking Compressed return block? Flushing: 0x00 Flushing: 0x0E Flushing: 0x00 Flushing: 0x82 Flushing: 0x00 Flushing: 0x52 Flushing: 0x00 Flushing: 0x04 Flushing: 0x09 Flushing: 0x1F Flushing: 0x05 Flushing: 0x10 Flushing: 0x40 Flushing: 0xFE Flushing: 0x7B Flushing: 0x0E Flushing: 0xB0 Flushing: 0x9A Compressed return block? Which then repeats forever. I've tried editing oe-install.pbl to change the baud rate (38400, 19200, 9600) but it makes no difference. I also looked for pblq but the link on http://cowlark.com/amstrad/index.html is broken. Any ideas? Thanks!

Just got an e3 - where do I start

Hello e3 hackers, I just received an e3, which to start with I'd just like to get a kernel to boot on (not quite sure what I'll do with it yet - but that will come later). The guy that gave it to me me said it had been in storage for some time, so fingers crossed that it has not been updated. I don't know yet because I haven't got a compatible PSU yet! If I understand correctly it's the proprietary bootloader on the 128Kb NOR flash that may have been updated making it difficult to hack? Would it be possible to get around this by flashing manually (using an AVR or similar?) If so would anyone be able to supply the correct binary image for the flash? Assuming I can pass this hurdle, what is the shape of linux support for this now? I see from reading the mailing list that the late 2.6 series worked fine... how about 3.x? How about defconfigs with full (or as much as possible) hardware support? I am happy cross compiling a kernel... I guess I can use any old ARM cross compiler? What exactly is the boot process and how does this limit the size of the kernel image? There's a way to get uboot on there - how can I do this? Does the kernel always need to be sent over serial? Sorry for all the questions, but without reading the entire mailing list there doesn't seem to be an easy way to find answers! Thanks, Ed
