Sound working!

That's exactly how we did all the E3 development - with Netgear FA101 adapters which are a Pegasus compatible chip and then mounting the root over NFS. We also found that Belkin F5D5050 worked well. I'm kind of surprised that y'all weren't developing over NFS already and debugging using gdbserver at one end and gdb/ddd at the PC end. Networking

I've just been playing with a "Pegasus II" type USB -> ethernet dongle on the E3. It's quite neat having an internet connection on it! I've been browsing the web using the "links" browser :) Is this the way others are networking their E3s? Or are people just accessing them via the serial line. I believe there are numerous guides around for building it in a cross compiling configuration, but there are at least 2 options that make it easier: * buildroot (http://buildroot.uclibc.org/) This is what Mark's image (the one you can download) is built using. Fairly quick to get going; you can use the BR_config in E3_release_v1.tar.gz * OpenEmbedded (http://www.openembedded.org/) This is a lot more involved to get going, but does offer a huge number of packages. It's the basis for Familiar (the iPaq distro) and OpenZaurus and David Ford's patch to support the E3 (including building u-boot and the kernel) was recently added to it. J. -- Revd. notldr release.

I've put my initial release of !LDR up at: http://the.earth.li/pub/e3/notldr-0.0.1.tar.gz It'll compile up to a ldr.img file that you can put in /dev/mtd3 and loads 128K from /dev/mtd1 to 11f00000 and calls it ie will just load u-boot and no more. In addition the u-boot diff I'm currently using myself is at: http://the.earth.li/pub/e3/delta-20060518.diff It'll automatically boot a kernel from /dev/mtd0 if no key is pressed with 30s of loading, which is plenty of time to interrupt it but still allows an unattended boot. No prebuilts of either of these yet. I have a cunning plan to do some sort of installer that you'll load the basics of over pbltool which will then pull in everything else off a USB memory stick, as well as backing up a virgin E3. Trying to load u-boot from NAND.

As I've discussed on IRC I've been trying to write a simple 2nd stage bootloader that PBL will load from NAND that will then load u-boot. An uncompressed PBL block seems to have a limit of 16k, which is far too small for u-boot and I don't want to get into replacing PBL with u-boot entirely without JTAG. Anyway. While I can init serial and flash the LEDs, I don't seem to be able to manage to even ident the NAND. My code isn't a lot different from the NAND code I wrote for u-boot and the kernel, so I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. I've tried a dumb loop as a delay, as well as the cleverer timer based delay routines that u-boot uses. But I don't think this should be the problem, as as long as the delay is the minimal length it shouldn't matter if it's more? Errm, all this discussion about PBL and loading from NAND is interesting, but doesn't really answer my original question :-) I'll be more specific: Where does the Amstrad firmware sit in the NAND flash? Does the 'linux.pbl' build deliberately avoid the amstrad code, or could it in theory wipe it out...? What are the memory ranges available?
