normal user access to pppd

At the moment I have to su and then run the pon script to go online. That's fine for me, but my machine will soon be multi-user, and I don't want the others to have root's password! What permissions would I need to do to so that normal users could simply type pon to connect? On a similar note, my digital camera downloads pics via the serial port /dev/ttyS0. Unfortunately I have to be root to do this. I have changed the permissions on that device before, but it keeps changing it back???? Weird! Extracting RPM contents.

Hi Russell Congratulations - have fun. I'm just a dabbler, by contrast with most people on the list who seem to be IT professionals. I had a similar experience to you - I was astonished to find a desktop after doing my first install! Not at all what I had expected from the recommended Linux books. All the same, the command line is essential - especially being able to switch to a different console when things go a bit wonky... Some things are easiest done with a GUI - like file copying etc, as you mention - many things can really only be done, or are best done, at the command line. Basically there are a huge number of things to learn and you will just have to pick them up as you go along. Mandrake tries to make it easy and approachable for the inexperienced user - the more experienced find it frustrating for that reason but for many people a lot of hand-holding and being able to do fun things right from the start is a good place to begin. But at some point we all have to start reading and studying and trying things out and breaking them and then trying to find out how to fix them <grin>. I do suggest that you look at the Mandrake support sites, especially <http://www.mandrakeuser.org> which has a lot of helpful, detailed, easy to understand information in the document section. They are useful for any inexperienced linux user, not just MDK users, as are the Suse and Redhat online support. The mandrake user and refrence guides are also invaluable. Best wishes, ask away when you need help - as long as you're making some effort to work things out for yourself then people will be very glad to help. Regards Syd

Stalham Venue : Hope Remains

Just had some more feedback from the powers that be. 1stly they asked me to pass on their apologies once more (I think they are a bit embarrassed they didn't check sooner) for the cancellation at short notice. They are keen to show support for the open source movement, as much of our next generation systems are based on open source Apache/Java/XML technologies(s) (or commercial variants of, where necessary). We're currently are looking at our 3rd party insurance to see if and how the conditions can be varied. Funnily enough one step that will help is if we restrict access to some parts of the site (at the moment once you're in you're in). This will mean putting some internal locks on some of the doors and reviewing the zoning of the alarm system so we can selectively isolate those areas we want to be accessible. Presumably the insurers feel that if an area is inaccessible then the liability for any accidents is eliminated! So, don't give up hope just yet! Mandrake install worked!

Hi there, again. Just to tell you that I appear to have a working Linux system now, after previous postings regarding problems with the install. Briefly, I did replace my computer with a newer one, 64MB RAM and 4GB HD. Then just put in the CD and boot floppy, under Win98, and it worked at the second attempt, with a neat GUI install. A couple of things I found offputting as a Linux newbie: No-one explains the partitioning process, you seem to have to know about that already. The 'auto-partition' offers several partitions under Linux, why is that? I wanted, and got, just one, mount point '/', alongside a Win98 partition. Also, it is so much easier to learn Linux using a GUI rather than commandline/console, such as browsing the file structure as well as opening various apps. Sounds obvious, but this doesn't seem to be emphasised in the literature, where commandlines and editing config files abound. I'm glad I persisted, though productivity so far has gone down (damn 'Asteroids'!). I may eventually have some questions regarding C++ possibilities. However, I couldn't disagree more with the GUI thing. For a newbie, the command line stuff is a far steeper learning curve but once you are even halfway up the cliff you have a much better understanding of what is actually going on in your linux system. Remote command execution..

Hi all, Is it possible to fire up ssh and run a remote command in a perl script, somthing like : system("ssh <user>@<host>:/<command>"); Would the above run the command then quit or stay logged in ? Basicaly I need to run a script on a local machine and dependant upon results, run a script on a remote machine, then continue back with the script on the local machine. Hope it makes sense.. Brother network printers

Hi Folks Picked up a Brother HL1660 printer recently complete with a network interface.. Having no end of fun getting it to print anything. I have the IP address and the subnet mask set as 192.168.0.118 & 255.155.155.0 and can ping the thing from any machine, but it will not print! The print queue on the computer is set up for a remote printer, but any jobs are just held in the queue. Help. Regards, Paul.

IMAP server setup

I want to centralise the storing of my email for my 5 machine LAN. So, after a little online research, I found setting up an IMAP server appeared to be the answer. However, following further investigation, I can't find any tutorials to assist me in doing this. What I want to do is: * Collect email from multiple pop3 addresses * Check email for viruses and automatically bounce virus infected emails * Filter out junk mail into a 'checking' account * Filter email into different IMAP accounts based on to: from: subject:, etc * Further filter the email going into the IMAP account into certain directories (this is a client or server issue?) * Read email on several machines (using IMAP-compatible client) * Reply to, forward to different IMAP accounts, etc What the easiest way to achieve this? Furthermore, in contrasting POP3 and IMAP, I have the following issues: * Are outgoing messages for an IMAP account stored with the IMAP account, or on the local machine? * What method is used for sending the email to the outside world for IMAP? Currently I download from POP3 and send via my ISP's SMTP server. * As the email is stored centrally, I would assume global searching is straight forward. java bug problem

Hi list, I've just installed j2re1.3 on a box running debian potato with 2.2.19 and it won't run, brings up the error code 4F530E43505002CC http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4512651.html I've installed the same package in the same way (apt-get) on a second box running the same software. This one runs the same files just fine. Google has many reports of this problem but no answers. I realise this is a feeble and flimsy posting from which I expect to have someone miraculously whisk up a solution, but can anyone shed any light? Meeting facilities for members with disabilities

Would it be useful if we indicated the ease of access at the various meeting venues for any members with disabilities? For example at Stalham the meeting room is one the 1st floor but there is a stair lift. There are also suitable toilet facilities on the same floor as the meeting room. As far as I'm aware all the doors are standard width (some are double doors) so presumably should be able to accommodate wheelchairs. Something else that might be of help is a list of people who would be willing to provide transport (assuming ordinary cars etc are suitable) for people who might not normally be able to attend (perhaps a web page link off of the Meetings page?) meetings. Artwork Needed

using the Xmono server

I have a small i486 with a black and white screen. For obvious reasons I want to use the mono server in my xconfiguration, but I cannot seem to get it to work. The machine is running RH6.0 (thanks to who sent me the disc -Craig I think, but not sure), during install it always loads the SVGA server, due to the card definition (Cirrus Logic GD5422). However editing the X11 config file to remove all the screens that use the SVGA and VGA16 server result in the error - failure to connect to X server. I have Xmono installed. The reason I need the mono server is that under the lynx browser I cant see any of the links as the display is using a bpp depth of 8. any ideas? by the way I managed to get the LXF slackware 8.1 disc to install on my 486 with 16MB ram - now that is a distro! lm_sensors, sensord and temperatures

I have, at last, managed to get lm_sensors working on my Tyan Thunder K7 dual processor board and I am monitoring the results with Gkrellm. This gives me two levels of warning. (1) Chips are getting hot - sound the alarm and (2) Turn the thing off before it cooks. Can anyone tell me what temperature values I should set for these and ditto for the chassis temperature? As I have also managed to get this machine to turn itself off after shutting down (shutdown -h now) I can also set Gkrellm to activate this at the higher temperature of the two levels. I can also run sensord to log temperature levels but have had to disable it because it keeps logging a chassis intrusion detection alarm. Although the board has a header for this it is not connected. Anyone know a way of disabling this? Many thanks Barry Samuels

QEmacs, a surprising editor

I just downloaded and installed the qemacs editor. (Debian: apt-get install qemacs.) If you open an HTML file with it, it renders it and lets you edit the rendered version a bit. You can get at the source for more serious changes with M-x xml-mode, but it surprised me that a sub-200k editor contains an CSS-based HTML renderer. Amazing, eh? It also can edit utf-8 (multilingual) with a variety of input methods taken from Yudit. It's still early days for this editor (and I've filed some bugs against it), but it's quite promising and I thought I'd let you all know. Can't start Gnome-terminal with non-root user.

I finally got round to setting up another user account (other than root) on my scratch built system. Most things are working except for Gnome-terminal. It starts fine for root but crashes with a message about changes to the 2.2.x kernel and checking ptys. Given that it works fine for root I think this is a red-herring. I think this is a file permissions problem. I've scanned round the web and found a couple of hits that suggested some file permissions that need to be set. I've checked these and they are ok. Any suggestions for how I might go about tracking this down (and yes I know I could cure this by installing a 'proper' distro, but what will I learn from that? - don't answer that, it's rhetorical :o) ) ____________ BAROMETER, n. Need advice for laptop install

Hello, I have a laptop with windows Home-XP (Which I find the most irritating of all the Windows OS's that I've ever used), the laptop has a 18 Gig disk drive. I want to repartition the drive, to keep the XP in a half the drive and install Linux on the other half. I'm not a Linux expert but want to use the laptop to get further Linux experience. In the past I have purchased various partition software manager's each time Microsoft changed something but having done that 3 times now I wonder if there is any alternative (My latest version was partition magic 4.0 which won't handle the new format NTFS that XP has been loaded with). Can anyone suggest any free software or any techniques for safely repartitioning the Laptop without reformating the existing XP partition? Thanks Karl Middleton

While browsing Mr.Gooch's website for devfs info. I noticed that he has developed a replacement set of boot scripts. <http://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/rgooch/linux/boot-scripts/index.html> I'm currently using the SysV format scripts as I prefer it to the BSD format (mainly because the SysV seems to be better structured and organised), does anyone have any strong views on SysV vs. BSD? postgresql problems

Hullo all, I just installed postgres, and when I try to run it it is looking for /usr/lib/postgresql/bin/psql to execute the program. The path it should be looking for is /usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql. I presume that: psql points to /usr/bin/psql which is a link to pg_wrapper, which is a binary file, which presumably has the full path. How would I alter this? Thanks. Jenny.

(actually, by RTFM'ing I see that they do indeed have index files that end in .cz on the servers). So, recap: If you want to find rpm's on the net, then use these 2 links. i.e. go to these links in your web browser, find the rpm on the web site, and download it through the web browser. www.freshrpms.net (these may/may not work with mandrake very well) www.rpmfind.net Secondly, there is the mandrake software manager, which can automatically download a list of mirror sites from which you can find RPM's. This is probably your best option. I haven't used Mandrake for almost a year now, I don't remember the exact buttons to press, but I'm sure a little time spent on it will help you find it. If not, there is excellent documentation on the Mandrake website, you may have missed the section on installing packages in the User Guide the 1st time round. e.g. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/82/en/user.html/x11454.html#AEN11465 I think all I did was to add a security update source, and that had the other rpms on it as well. Try it, it's not going to hurt! http://www.mandrakeuser.org has lots of documentation that is worth reading. Once you read the manual and understand it, all you need to do is find some mirrors with rpm packages on, although IIRC, the security update did that for me. Ethernet Cards

Most of my little network uses old 10BaseT network cards however I recently purchased a 10/100 hub and notice that the latest network cards I have ordered are also rated 10/100. I was therefore wondering a few things: Firstly, are 10MHz and 100MHz (on a 10/100 NIC) two discrete speeds or could the NIC/hub pair negotiate an intermediate speed if that is all my dodgey D.I.Y network cabling can handle? (i.e. is it possible for a 10/100 link to run at say 50MHz?) If so then is this intermediate speed negotiated only when the link is first made or will it dynamically drift higher and lower from minute to minute? Secondly, to satisfy my curiosity, I was wondering if anyone could recommend any little Linux programs which I can run in the background to dynamically monitor the speed at which my PC's network card is actually running. Thirdly I notice a couple of the latest NIC's I have ordered (3Com905CX-TX-M) are "managed" and "offer complete PC management". This has captured my imagination as I had always considered network cards to be pretty dumb, boring things. Could anyone guide me to something which could give me a crash course in remote NIC/Hub interrogation as (to me at least)(and yes, I know I need to meet more people and get a life!) this sounds quite an interesting and exciting concept. Finally, does using "managed" network cards within a network mean that my network's security is about to become non-existent? (i.e. if a hacker managed to gain access to my network but couldn't hack into my PC could he, for example, in frustration, remotely configure all my "managed" NIC's to do silly things making my network unusable?) Possible Meeting Venue

'Der Management' at Kewill have given a provisional OK to ALUG using the training room here at Stalham Staithe for the odd meeting. We need to check out the insurance position but we have run similar events here in the past apparently so with luck and a fair wind.... Our training room has the usual complement of white boards and flipcharts plus we can borrow an OHP and a display projector if required. It's quite large and can take up to 30-40 people (but 20 is comfortable). There is internet access available. Tea/Coffee facilities are also available on site. The Swan and the Maid's Head in Stalham are within about 5 minutes walk So... is this of any interest? Getting programs to run

I've loaded a program on here from a CD and was using KDE. Although it showed up in my packages I can't figure out how to get it to run! I was going to try 'run' but I'm not sure what to type in. I tried just the name of the program but that didn't work. I'm using Gnome more and more, think I like it better, and Gnome shows an icon for the program but when I click on it nothing happens. What've I done or not done properly? Also, when you're installing a program and it states you need other files, does that mean for certain that they aren't on here? Choice of E-mail Clients + Stuff

Canon S400 printer now works a treat. The combination of Gimp-Print + CUPS + espgs will cope with an amazing list of different printers (espgs is a specially tweaked version of ghostscript that 'knows' about CUPS and Gimp-Print supplies all the printer definitions). More good news after visiting www.linmodems.org I discovered that the chipset in my internal modem card (not a 'proper' modem but a so-called winmodem) is one that has a set of Linux drivers available (I have the Lucent chipset see http://www.heby.de/ltmodem). After studying the Linmodem, Modem and PPP howto's, I installed PPP and the drivers plus the Gnome PPP application and applet and (after an initial bit of hassle with PAP) it now all works a treat!! I was able to happily dial into my ISP and browse the web with Opera. :o) :o) :o) Interestingly I think web browsing seems faster under GNU/Linux than it is under Windows(2K). Perhaps there's just less OS overhead getting in the way?. Now the questions; 1) What security precautions should I be taking now I can connect to the internet? It might be worth digging a bit deeper into the 'contract' The reason why they dont like you to use Linux is becaus Linux tends to use Masquerading rather than the Proxy that is common with W$. With Proxy they can tell how many PC's you are using on the inside at any time. Its not so easy with Linux routing/firewall so you may actually be in breach of their T&C's using it and you may be cut off as a result! That may be 'urban paranoia' but, as Laurie said, they all seem to insist on w$ on the inside. This may be due to the fact the sales staff are taps but with consume.net ramping up I think not. Using NTL Broadband with Linux

Are there any ALUG members on the list who have their Linux network connected to the internet via NTL Broadband? An NTL sales rep rang me last night trying to get me to sign up for their broadband service. Unfortunately I think he was just reading a pre-prepared script as he was unable to answer many technical questions. In particular he was adamant that their cable modem box needed to be connected to a PC running Windows 98 or higher (*NOT* Linux). Has anyone managed to get round this as I would prefer my firewall (the PC on my network which will actually be connected to the NTL box) to continue to be Linux based rather trying to find a Windows based solution. installing from cover CDs

Hi All, I know that cover CD's seem to cause much furrowing of brows but..... Although I have been toying with linux for nearly a year, I have just used RedHat up until now. So I thought that I might get a lightweight distro from the covers of Linux Format. Gentoo and The LRS distros look interesting, but how are they installed? If I burn the iso image onto CD what do I do next?. When I installed RedHat I remember that I had to make a floppy with the boot image to launch the installer, but where would I get that from for these OSs? Although I've looked at the disc and mags there does not seem to be an idiots guide to this (which is what I need). I like to find things out for myself if possible - but don't know where to go from here. what I need is a simple instruction list something like.. 1) burn the gentoo iso image file onto a CD 2) get *****.*** file onto a floppy from??? 3) boot using floppy 4) mount CD 5) start install can anyone help? Some networking questions

The story so far.... OK so as some of you are aware I have a multi box, multi OS network at home running various Unix, Win 3.11, 9x and NT systems which consists of between 2 and 8 nodes at any one time at the moment. The network will never have more than 10 boxes (rash statement I know). I have loads of questions about the best way to get this up and running so here is some info to give some background on what I have and what I need. The LAN is connected to the outside world via an ISDN router which has a fixed IP address of 192.168.0.50 the rest of the nodes have fixed addresses in the range 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.10 and a sub net mask of 255.255.255.0. The Win boxes can all see each other and can print to each others printers via MS file and Printer sharing. One Linux box can be seen the Windows boxen via a very rudimentary Samba set up but Linux cannot see, share files or print to the Win boxen. The *nix boxes can all ping one another but I don'tknow how to share files or printers between them. What I'd like to do is have one Linux box as my gateway to the net acting as a mail server, firewall and maybe a web cache for all the other nodes on the LAN and to be able to print and share files from/to any box or printer. I'm presuming that because its just a small workgroup peer to peer network that I won't be needing a DNS server an will keep the IP addresses staticly assigned. What is the best way to setup a mail server, I have multiple accounts? Fetchmail/sendmail or are there better alternatives? What is the easiest way to share files between Linux boxes? -- Cheers, BJ

xterm meta key

Please save from tearing out what little hair I have left! I'm trying to make a Debian (woody) installation let me delete the previous word in an xterm (using tcsh) by typing meta-backspace, i.e. just like the Emacs keystroke. But it's not playing ball. It's actually pretty weird as I've never had this trouble under RedHat or SuSE (or SunOS, come to that). Relevant information: o xrdb -query reports (among other things) xterm.eightBitInput: true o I have no bindkey commands in my .cshrc and no ~/.tcshrc file o A short Tk script shows that backspace generates keycode 22 I thought I'd just need to say bindkey "M-^H" backward-delete-word in my .cshrc but that doesn't work. Mandrake install

During my latest attempt to install Mandrake Linux, I mistakenly opted for KDE, which my old system doesn't seem to handle (lots of harddrive noises and takes ages for anything to show). It automatically tries to load a GUI when I login, and I can't see how to revert to a command-line to try and edit some config file. Ctrl-Alt-Bckspc eventually closes the GUI but it then loads up again before I can key in anything else. I would like to use IceWM or Sawfish (less resource demanding? and WMaker didn't appear to be offered during the install). Any ideas please? (The GUI never loads fully so I can't access any config tools that way.) I would prefer not to reinstall (about 5 times now), and feel I am getting somewhere, at least in terms of basic Linux knowledge(ie noway am I going to revert to a previous OS). Fuller report on my experiences as a newbie when I get the machine to do some work! Hi everyone, I want to make sure a some values are added into a table but am having some problems.. I'm trying to use the following $dbh = DBI->connect('dbi:mysql:dbname','user','passwd'); if($dbh->do("insert into <table-name> value('$data1','$data2 etc...)") == 1) { blah blah } else { blah blah } But I keep on getting an error about an undefined subroutine... help please.. Let the questions begin!!

Trying again... I'm not entirely clear on how the file/folder system works in here. Keeping in mind I'm used to using the OTHER OS, is it the same sort of structure? Where are the best/worst places to create folders so that I can remember where things are? Looks like user and home but I'd rather ask before I start trying to add folders etc... #2 - I see some programs (in a brochure that came with the user guide) that I supposedly have available to me but apparently I didn't load during the install. Can I put the install CD back in and load them now without going through the whole install again? Don't know if they'd be on the first CD or the Comm. Apps CD....hmmm......... #3 - In anticipation of installing Linux I began buying Linux Format mag and The Linux Magazine. The cover CD's, (and this more than likely has to do with my first question to some point) if I pop in the CD, then what? Will it automatically put things where they're supposed to go? From what I can gather not having tried it yet, there will be some other 'work' to do to get some of them installed too and they seem to give good directions. #4 - While reading through the user guide that came with my 'boxed set' and also a book called Teach Yourself Linux in 24 hours (yeah right! *g*). When they go through different steps on how to do things it tells me different commands to type but not where or what I should be in to type them!! It seemed a stupid question so I had my fiance try finding out in the books with no luck, so I'm asking. #5 - Have you dozed off yet? lol. There's way too much "space" around my windows. Is there some way to fix this within Linux so that I don't have to keep changing my monitor settings as I go back and forth with Bills product? OK, guess that's if for today. Hope they aren't silly questions......honestly I am researching but can't get to the answers fast enough, could be just a bit excited and impatient. Maybe. Right click on the applet, left click on "Remove from Panel". Gnome and KDE work a lot like windows interface-wise. Also, please tell us exactly which desktop manager you are using. i.e. KDE or Gnome. The answers may be slightly different. There are LOADS of window managers and they all work slightly differently. If you look in the archives (on the website), several people posted their suggestions. (I did I know) Downloading from the internet works the same way as it does in windows, only a little faster (I've noticed). In regards to the coverdiscs, my opinion on that was covered in a previous post. When installing programs, you can download rpm's anywhere. rpm -ivh packagename.rpm will install it and put all the packages in the right places,no matter where you downloaded the rpm files. (you need to be root to do this) You may find this handy: in a terminal type kelly@computer$ su it will ask for a password (the root password) type it in, hit enter You will get the prompt: root@computer# That's how you temporarily log in as root using a terminal. When you have finished doing whatever (i.e. installing rpm's), type exit to exit back to your normal user. If you ever need help on a command, type: man <program name> i.e. man rpm it will give you it's manual page. If you need to exit the man page, just press q (i.e. for quit). That took me ages to work out!!!! Trying Mandrakes software manager (see BJ's post) is recommended, it will download the rpms automatically, and install them too. i.e. learn to crawl before you try to run. Other than all the other suggestions people have made, I would say that maybe you just need to play a bit more, and be a little bit bolder. i.e. try these things out. If you are not logged in as root, then you can't do any *Serious* damage, and if you do, so what? Most people reinstall linux a few times when they start out- you learn from your mistakes (and I make a lot of them). Also, perhaps read one of those "Linux for Dummies" books from the library (or buy one). I always read up using those kinds of books when doing something new and then move on to more complicated books when I get the basics sorted in my head. jigdo woes

Hi all, just got back from work to find out that my jigdo download of Debian Woody CD1 has failed it says :- Aaargh - 1 files could not be downloaded. This should not happen! Depending on the problem, it may help to retry downloading the missing files. which it seems to keep trying to download the file driver-4.bin now this is a tad annoying as i can't burn the first CD, I have tried using 4 mirrors now so i feel that if the file is corrupt then somebody would have fixed it by now...
