[PATCH] Add support for Amstrad Delta (E3).

The attached patch adds support for the Amstrad Delta (E3) Videophone. Currently the Amstrad primary bootloader provides the main hardware initialisation and then loads u-boot to handle user interaction and kernel loading. I'd appreciate any comments you may have. V2 release - Handling bad NAND blocks

I thought I'd give the release a try (up to now I've always copied the kernel over serial and used nfs root) but it appears that I have some bad blocks in the NAND on my device: Found ldr.img Erasing /dev/mtd3 Erasing 16 Kibyte @ 0 -- 0 % complete. I tried this using dd if=/media/sda1/ldr.img of=/dev/mtdblock3 bs=16384 seek=3 that seemed to write OK, but the e3 wont boot of the nand yet. I get an error about missing kernel params, which repeats continuously. Anyone got any ideas? Matt

Howto Guide?

hi, has anyone writen a 'How to Guide' for installing on these devices. I would love to try all this stuff out but i've never build a linux distro before. I've also got the V2 release working without any major problems (a fantastic achievement, thanks Jonathan et al). I have a few observations and questions that may help others. I did stop the NAND backup process because it was incredibly slow. "top" showed that the system wasn't using much CPU but the load was over 2.0 Using "df" also revealed that the USB stick was only having 16 bytes written to it every second or so. The E3 keyboard is mapped as a standard desktop keyboard so most shifted characters are wrong and symbol-shift characters are ignored. I replaced the supplied 2.6.16 uImage with the one from the 2.6.17 directory in the hope that the keyboard mappings would be fixed. It worked but it only provided a shell login for the serial connection unlike the 2.6.16 image which provides both a serial and an onboard E3 login. The copying of the Linux image from NAND seems slow, I recall some discussion about this being fixed within u-boot. Does the copy of u-boot in the V2 release contain this fix? My USB-to-Ethernet dongle is a Psion Dacom Gold Port using the Kawasaki LSI KL5KUSB101B chip which was detected by both the 2.6.16 and 2.6.17 kernels (it uses the kaweth device driver). Upon connection it reports some "rx-16" problem or other but it works fine. Hi David, I had this too. You need to add the following to the distro/amsdelta-oe.conf file (or whatever you're using for that): PREFERRED_PROVIDER_task-bootstrap = "task-bootstrap" Also, you may need to build your uImage seperately by doing bitbake u-boot before you do any other builds. I have so far managed to get an OE system and footfs to boot with a command line. I still cannot get Opie to work at all however since there seem to be several problems with bits of it (such as bluepin) which won't compile with the qpe-mt library due to incompatibilities with the vtable entries therein. I have read that a static build is possible but have been unable to get this to work. I have also tried excluding all these apps since they seem to be largely multimedia stuff and bluetooth which I think may be a bit advanced for the e3 at present... However, Opie won't 'assemble' without some of these and complains of unsatisfied dependencies right at the end (a bit annoying after 2 days' compilation :-( ) Does anyone have an unbroken Opie snapshot that actually compiles completely? Or have I done something stupid with my distro? Maybe GPE is better? Cheers, Brendan

OpenEmbedded woes

Well, I finally managed to persuade Monotone to behave --- rebuilding the database only took about six hours... however, I'm now finding some odd problems that lead me to suspect that the v2 release wasn't built with the same version of OpenEmbedded that I've got. Firstly, oe-amsdelta.diff doesn't apply, mostly because my version is referring to 'include' instead of 'require'. If I patch in the changes manually (changing to 'require'), the when I try to build bootstrap-image, I get: | ERROR: Cannot satisfy the following dependencies for \ task-bootstrap-unionroot: ...and a long list of package names. Each package will build manually, but shouldn't this happen automatically? Plus, some of the packages referred to are missing, such as amsdelta-installer and sysvinit-pidof (there are no bitbake files for them in the repository that I can find). Faster Linux boot using PBL ?

Hi, I've been thinking of a way to make booting Linux on the E3 a bit faster. Since NAND ready bit is a bit "broken" in u-boot, I think we could use the fact that PBL copies some NAND into SDRAM anyway. But the question is: how can we "trick" PBL, so that it starts to copy the Flash earlier than 4M ? Because I don't like wasting another few MB of user space in the upper 4M region... Or maybe there is a way to "combine" two blocks of MTD into one ? -- Piotr Michniewski

I've just given the v2 release a try --- impressive stuff! The download Just Worked. No more faffing around with serial downloads every time I want to boot the thing, hurrah. It's also really nice to have a real boot loader. Plus, thanks to the magic of jffs2 there's an astonishing amount of root file system space... A few minor quibbles: - Busybox's loadkmap is very stupid and can't cope with my ASCII keymap table. (It also wants to refer to the obsolete /dev/vc/0.)
