Kernel crashes?

Hmmm.... continuing problems since my last recompile (of 2.4.17). (i.e. these didn't used to happen...) 1) If I need to do anything that is intensive disk-wise (writing large files to disk), I am unable to do anything else, otherwise the system locks up. A symptom of this, for example, is that xmms loops about a second of the MP3 I'm playing. X does not respond to ctrl-alt-backspace, the system doesn't respond to ctrl+alt+del. 2) Although I have not changed my etc/fstab file, on booting, the system refuses to mount a vfat partition ("wrong fs type, bad superblock or wrong option"). If I mount it manually as root, I can access the partition (but only as root). I DID compile in vfat, DOS and UMSDOS support. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to view anything but the X server logs in /var/logs , as it says that the file is not viewable. How could I view these log files? Which one should I look at? Any parameters I can pass on at boot to enable more verbose logging? I'm VERY close to reinstalling / and chmod'ing my /home partition! Well this sounds like a very good idea i dont live anywhere nere ely but I agree that Norfolk would be a very nice place to try wirless networks. Well what options are there? ive been told about wirless but dont fully understand what hardware is needed. Maybe some1 could give a talk about it at the next meeting? I live 15 miles from kings lynn and 10 miles from swafam. No chance of geting any connection better then isdn atm :( so a wirless lan would be nice ;) I know this thred is abit old but i was away on work exp. so i missed it. Any one know of a nice single package for quake or doom? Boot problems

Hi Folks Installed RH7.2 on a clean 3.2Gig drive this morning and promptly went about compiling a new kernel for a 586 CPU - Plugged the drive in to a P166 box when I got home, and now the thing hangs at the "Freeing memory" stage. Attempting to boot the old kernel just results in an instant reset, so I can't use that option.... Short of wiping the disk and doing a fresh install, does anyone have some suggestions ? A boot floppy is out as there is no floppy on this machine and the RH CD doesn't appear to have a rescue system on it. Regards, Paul.

JDK 1.2

Hi there, I've just installed some processing software under debian which requires a "JDK 1.2" to run. It seems to just need a java executable to run no graphics or anything. So, can anyone suggest a debian package for woody that would provide me with an equivalent to the JDK 1.2? I have seen the various jdk1.1 and kcaffe packages on the woody CDs and on www.debian.org, but I can't seen anything that would provide anything suitable. Hope someone can help. Cheers. David.

OK, now this is possibly one of the strangest requests that you'll ever get... I want virii, basically so that I can test/play with this funky java ScannerDaemon thing that I want to plug in to our server (free virus scanner, yay!). So, all those "really fun" M$ viruses that we all get from time to time, please bounce a copy this way! (works mail server appears to be filtering the main culprits, damn!) so, brettp(a)users.sourceforge.net is the way to go (I use imap on it from work, given that it redirects to liunuxfreemail.com). IP_Tables rulesets

As I'm trying to rewrite my firewall script (last one on this system was autogenerated). I'm trying to find a suitable one to crib from. I am a standard dial-up user but with a fixed ip address (I use demon). Obviously I need to browse the net, check my pop3 mailbox etc. and the only services I need to listen on is port 21, IRC and Instant messaging (i.e AIM and MSN). I do no forwarding/masquerading, as I'm not on an internal network. If anyone would like to send me example scripts to this e-mail address, it would be greatly appreciated. Bit of fun: Your first Linux distro

Hi folks, Just for a bit of fun (since it's Friday) - what was your very first exposure to Linux and what was your first distribution that you ever installed (and can you remember the kernel version?!). For me, I was about to head off to university and became very interested in UNIX (and in particular, Linux) since it was beginning to make a bit of a splash in various computer magazines at that time. I got hold of a copy of Yggrdrasil Linux which boasted that it had 0.93 (or was it 0.98, I can't remember) of the Linux kernel. I had a relatively new 486DX-33 computer at the time with 8Mb RAM and attempting to run XFree86 on it was incredibly slow. I managed to persuade the folks that I needed more RAM, and eventually ended up with 16Mb which made all the difference which meant that I had a working X-Windows box that did keep swapping it's memory to HD and slowing the thing down to a crawl.
