In November 2001 Werner Heuser, owner of the Opens Source project MobiliX - UniX on Mobile Computers (http://mobilix.org) was charged by "Les Editions Albert Rene", which is owner of the trademark "Obelix". The charge aimes on a deletion of the trademark "MobiliX" and a compensation fee. Also every commercial use of the name "MobiliX" will be forbidden. Every offense can be charged with up to 250.000 Euro or as a substitute with six months prison. Werner Heuser has taken the lawyers Jaschinski Biere Brexl (JBB) (http://www.jbb-berlin.de) to represent him in court. His lawyers had to work out the legal response until January 21st 2002. The legal response (PDF, 22 pages in German) is online (http://mobilix.org/mobilix_asterix.html) now. The document describes the origin of the names Obelix (from "obelisk") and MobiliX (from "mobil" and "UniX"). Many wellknown names are used to show how widespread the suffix "ix" is in the IT business, e.g. often UniX derivates are named by this scheme. This is followed by an analysis of the pronounciation and spelling of the words Obelix and MobiliX, and whether they can be mistaken from members of the IT business or not. As a conclusion the charge is considered void. Since the suffix "ix" is widespread in the IT community, it seems possible that even more projects will be charged. This case is very important for the Free Software community, too. Therefore the lawyers Jaschinski Biere Brexl (JBB) have agreed to make the legal response public. Slackware 8 - Cups

This one has got me confused. I have installed Cups 1.1.14 on Slackware 8 to try and get my printer working ( Samsung ML1210 ). Using Konqueror to set up cups http//localhost:631/ I have installed my printer and it shows it as working, but it prints nothing. When I try a test print I get this error client-error-not-possible I do not know where to go from here. Any help would be gratefull to me as well as John Seago as I have got to install his printer as well. Some details of my system Slackware 8 Kernel 2.4.17 kde 2.2.2 xfree86 4.2.0 cups 1.1.14 LPRng 3.8.5 Chris Drane

Full archives of ALUG since June 2000 now on-line!

I have now integrated the old ALUG archives (when ALUG's mailing list was hosted on rabbit.stu.uea.ac.uk) into the current set of archives so that we now have a complete set of articles posted to the ALUG mailing lists since June, 2000. HTDig will soon pick up the additional articles and index them, so the archive will shortly be fully searchable! What's been integrated? All of the articles for the main discussion list and the announcement list between June 2000 and August 2001 when we were hosted on rabbit.stu.uea.ac.uk. Can I search the ALUG archives as well as browse them? Yes, simply visit http://www.alug.org.uk/search, or http://lists.alug.org.uk/search. The entire ALUG web site is archived, along with the announce, main, and social lists. Any complaints, problems, or funny jokes - please feel to forward them to me and I'll try and fix things ASAP. This is all because msaccess outputs reports in html as separate pages and names them filePageTwo.html, filePageThree.html etc etc. The output html files are then sent to the web server, but the page I link from has the file link simply as "file.html" and thus other files are not displayed. of course, i could have a row of links, but they are not always needed and I think this is messy and could lead to misinformation if old data is displayed. So I've been doing the cat filePagetwo >> file.html up till now. Dearest of Teds - thanks for all that, I must admit to being a bit overwhelmed though. I was thinking to run a bit of php code when the page was accessed, to trigger the cat file2 >> file. The $bigfile = join(file("filename1"), file("filename2")); print $bigfile; suggested by Brett does exactly what I need....I just need to figure out how to run the damned thing now! (I do need to find out how to trigger a script when web page is accessed though, as I need to delete appended pages so they won't be appended the next day (if there is a page two one day but not the next the old page two will append when we don't want it).) You never actually need to generate the static page, also, if you *really* want to cheat, upload the files to a different directory (one that you know will only hold them) then using a small php script in the webtree concat all the files together and splat them out the other end, this has the down side of server load but the plus side of ease... <?php $content = ""; $d = dir("/path/to/files/"); while ($entry = $d->read()) { if ( filetype($entry) == "file" ) { $content = join($content, file($entry)); } } print $content; ?> as always - this is more or less off the top of my head, and hasn't been tested at all, I think that should work and will go > 2 files, not sure if the order will be correct thou. php anyone?

Can anyone help me with a bit of php? I need to append the copntents of one file on to another when a web page is accessed. Cron is no use as the timing isn't fixed. I can append a line of text so far, but not the contents of a file, and as I'm away for the rest of the week and have been doing this manually till I find the fix, I'm panicking! - - help! I'm only a young whippersnapper(17), and learnt how to use a computer with a 386 dx 44(Which is still around somewhere with Doom2 yeah!).and Win 3.1 when I was 11. As my dad has been in the computer world for 25+ years he had been using Linux since 0.9X (with a smug smile as well) He always used to tell me that MS was really a load of poopoo. I upgraded computer and os to MS win 95. Then I dicovered the joys of Linux. The one thing that attracted me to linux was The Gimp. My first linux distro was Redhat 6.2 Ahhh the memories; trying desperatly to compile some game or other and wondering what the hell this make and make install buisness was about. one other thing that stick out in my mind is my dad showing me this thing called the world wide web, This must have been when I was about nine/ten. Ahh the halowed sounds of a 14.4k modem :) PS Who is the youngest person on this list?
