debian pismo?

I've been runnning Corel 1.1 for a while but haven't played with it much as I'm really only using the box for playing MP3's and learning perl. backup puzzle

Hello, all! I have a backup script that is puzzling me. When I run it manually from the command line (as root) it quite happily goes off and makes a nice tarball of specified directories and plops it as a dated file of some 50Meg into a samba-mounted directory on the main ntserver, so it can be grabbed by the backup tape running from there. However, when i set it as a cron task (for root) it only makes a tiny little file, every single time. I thought it may be a samba share problem so i set it to back up to a linux directory and then copy it over, but it still only makes this tiny file. Contents of the back-up file: the weekend ones were the ones scheduled to run by cron, and the big one one where I ran it a moment ago from the command line. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 14211 Mar 9 22:00 trx-090302.tgz -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 14211 Mar 10 22:00 trx-100302.tgz -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 49334571 Mar 11 11:29 trx-110302.tgz And here is my backup script (please don't laugh at it though!): #!/bin/bash OF=/backup/trx-$(date +%d%m%y).tgz tar -cvzf $OF /var/www/ /home/cvs And finally what i have set crontab for root for: 0 22 * * * /root/trxbackup Can anyone see anything daft I've done? And now a DNS question....

Hi again.... Just been asked at work if it's possible to setup the DNS server (Bind9 RH6.2), to not only resolve addresses on the public side, but for internal users on a private IP range to have say www.domain.com resolved to a private IP if it's on the internal network.. That's not too clear is it... e.g. www.domain.com normally resolves to a public IP want internal users to resolve it to a private IP... Is this done using acl's ? TIA Simon P.S. Linux quotas for Sendmail.....

Hi guys... I'm having a few problems understanding how the quotas work.... I want to enable quotas for mail users, so would I enable the quotas on the group (which they are all in) and apply it to the partition /var/spool/mail.... Does this mean that say if one user uses all the space, the quota is applied to all the users in the group? If so how would I get around this as I need to limit the mailbox size for each user down to a reasonable amount.. Bear in mind that I have 3500 users on here, so is there an easy answer for this or have I lots of work ahead of me ? TIA Simon P.S. RH7.2 Sendmail9

Hello all, I've just joined ALUG. I am new to Linux and love what I have seen so far. However I am getting very frustrated by my slow progress - having been cosseted by Windows features such as plug and play and one click type software installations I'm finding it very difficult to even get to first base with Linux. This is despite having invested in 2 good Linux books! It's all so new!! My short/medium term ambition is to be able to connect a modem to my (Suse) Linux machine, download and install the latest Apache, PHP and MySQL and go from there ... .. (I'm also new to the area having recently moved from Oxfordshire to Manningtree, near Colchester). looking forward to getting to know you all ..... best regards, David

I know the standard market for Linux promotion by LUGs is home users, because we're home users and everyone, at heart, thinks other people should be how they are. However, doesn't it seem a little funny that when the case for business is a 'no-brainer', and home market (MS' traditional stronghold) is a long hard slog, we should try for the home market? A really solid case can be built, based on hard cash (licenses, downtime, $1/sec support, forced upgrade, indelible faults etc), for why every business that uses computers should use Linux. I would say that the number #1, maybe only, substantial reason companies won't switch is training. Well, there's fear of the unknown, but just say 'IBM does Linux. Who got fired for buying IBM?'. So what I'd really like to see is a business-targeted campaign, giving realistic TCO (total cost of ownership) comparisons for Linux v. MS, and promoting some of the brave companies selling support and training for Linux. While LUG support can be great, and a lot of companies would be overjoyed to get free support, many of them would probably also like at least the option of formal support. Categorisation is a risky business, but I'd say the OS market largely divides into gamers, the clueless, employees, employers and developers. Significant work has to happen before Linux has a hope of reaching gamers, and truly clueless home users (the ones who can't figure out which is the 'Refresh' button on a browser, and move windows by resizing) ought to use Mac OS X not normal Linux. Similarly, people with a PC at home only because they need it for work won't switch unless their employer does ('Please add your name to the attached Word file' ring any bells?). Finally, while developers are ripe for conversion with many potential benefits, they're either converted already, converting by themselves, or fall into another category (notably workers). The critical point are the employers, who will convert if we show them the money. Every converted employer leads a host of employees into the light. Let's see business demos and business promotion. Really, it's a no-brainer. Hi again.... I've got a user who wants a copy of all their received mail sending onto another account.. I was thinking of a .forward file but this sends the message and removes it from the server.. It's got to be a copy, so he can pick his mail from 2 different accounts..... Also, anyone know of an auto-responder for sendmail.. Simon

Hi Guys, A few questions for Sendmail..... Is it possible to set the maximum recipients for an e-mail ? If so, any pointers please... Just I've got users sending a half meg file to 200 or so mail addresses!! Limiting mailbox size.. I believe it's done using quotas? Can anyone point me to a good resource to figure this one out.... Is there any other way other than with quotas..... I've been told that qmail does all of the above without any problems.. Any views on this ? Simon

Hi all, The next meeting will be taking place in Common Room A, Nelson Court at the University of East Anglia on Sunday between 2pm and 5pm. Directions to the uea are available from www.uea.ac.uk, and there are mapboards on the campus near the main car park that should get you to the common room easily enough. Post meeting drinks will happen in the Union bar, 5pm - 6pm, altho this is not a hard limit, and may well go on longer.. Rumour is that some beer in the Union is current £1 a pint... not that that should effect whether you turn up or not... ;-) Label your kit, if you're bringing it along, and post here to let us know what to look forward too... I will almost certainally be there, hangover from saturday permitting, and will be bringing my Pico Laptop, running debian unstable, and possibly my other Linux machine, if i've failed to get adsl going on it by then. There is a systems administrator's position at a North West London ISP (who also provide specialist and hard-to-find PC and Mac components as well as fully built PCs - see http://www.webcoin.co.uk, http://www.pc500.net and http://www.spot5.com for details). Roles will include the installation, maintenance and monitoring of Linux servers (based around a mixture of Red Hat 7.2, Slackware 8.0, and Debian) as well as Sun Solaris 8 on Ultra-SPARC IIe's, some FreeBSD boxes (mainly workstations, though) and a wireless private network powered by Debian proxy servers/gateways. Other duties include supporting the development team with whatever requests they have for installing applications on the servers (such as Postgres and MySQL installations, Apache configuration, Exim and Sendmail configuration, etc). You will also be supporting clients by email and telephone and resolving any problems they may have with their web site or email. Kernel crashes?

Hmmm.... continuing problems since my last recompile (of 2.4.17). (i.e. these didn't used to happen...) 1) If I need to do anything that is intensive disk-wise (writing large files to disk), I am unable to do anything else, otherwise the system locks up. A symptom of this, for example, is that xmms loops about a second of the MP3 I'm playing. X does not respond to ctrl-alt-backspace, the system doesn't respond to ctrl+alt+del. 2) Although I have not changed my etc/fstab file, on booting, the system refuses to mount a vfat partition ("wrong fs type, bad superblock or wrong option"). If I mount it manually as root, I can access the partition (but only as root). I DID compile in vfat, DOS and UMSDOS support. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to view anything but the X server logs in /var/logs , as it says that the file is not viewable. How could I view these log files? Which one should I look at? Any parameters I can pass on at boot to enable more verbose logging? I'm VERY close to reinstalling / and chmod'ing my /home partition! Boot problems

Hi Folks Installed RH7.2 on a clean 3.2Gig drive this morning and promptly went about compiling a new kernel for a 586 CPU - Plugged the drive in to a P166 box when I got home, and now the thing hangs at the "Freeing memory" stage. Attempting to boot the old kernel just results in an instant reset, so I can't use that option.... Short of wiping the disk and doing a fresh install, does anyone have some suggestions ? A boot floppy is out as there is no floppy on this machine and the RH CD doesn't appear to have a rescue system on it. Regards, Paul.

Hi there, I've just installed some processing software under debian which requires a "JDK 1.2" to run. It seems to just need a java executable to run no graphics or anything. So, can anyone suggest a debian package for woody that would provide me with an equivalent to the JDK 1.2? I have seen the various jdk1.1 and kcaffe packages on the woody CDs and on www.debian.org, but I can't seen anything that would provide anything suitable. Hope someone can help. Cheers. David.

I am a standard dial-up user but with a fixed ip address (I use demon). Obviously I need to browse the net, check my pop3 mailbox etc. and the only services I need to listen on is port 21, IRC and Instant messaging (i.e AIM and MSN). I do no forwarding/masquerading, as I'm not on an internal network. If anyone would like to send me example scripts to this e-mail address, it would be greatly appreciated. Bit of fun: Your first Linux distro

Hi folks, Just for a bit of fun (since it's Friday) - what was your very first exposure to Linux and what was your first distribution that you ever installed (and can you remember the kernel version?!). For me, I was about to head off to university and became very interested in UNIX (and in particular, Linux) since it was beginning to make a bit of a splash in various computer magazines at that time. I got hold of a copy of Yggrdrasil Linux which boasted that it had 0.93 (or was it 0.98, I can't remember) of the Linux kernel. I had a relatively new 486DX-33 computer at the time with 8Mb RAM and attempting to run XFree86 on it was incredibly slow. I managed to persuade the folks that I needed more RAM, and eventually ended up with 16Mb which made all the difference which meant that I had a working X-Windows box that did keep swapping it's memory to HD and slowing the thing down to a crawl. All I wanted was a controllable system which I could use to produce copy for publication, save my research notes and connect to the Internet, and print out papers for Editors. then I found GNU/Linux, and now I'm addicted, I've even spent a huge chunk of last years pocket money on new computers, and probably more on a huge GNU/Linux library which I have yet to understand. -- John Seago Change is not synonymous with `progress'. My Linux Notebook shows my first install was mandrake 8 on the 5th of the 7th last year, (this after two years of having Windows as an electric typewriter and nothing more; second-hand computer cheaper than new word processor). Moved up to 8.1 which showed every sign of becoming a Linux version of Windows by 8.2 so moved on to Slackware 8, which looks as if, if I live long enough I might just be able to catch up enough to be able to control it by the time I'm 70 or so. My insoluable problem, printing, it won't! But I'll have to get Chris my son-in-law to outline the problem. (I'm expecting his post to follow). John Seago

ip_tables/ kernel modules

hmmm... consequences of compiling my new kernel... when I do $iptables -L even as root, it doesn't recognise that iptables is there, and asks if I need to insmod. I'm pretty sure I compiled iptables into my kernel. In fact I explicitly remember doing it. #insmod ip_tables returns: no module of that name found. #modprobe -l doesn't show it, or ip_chains either I'm pretty sure I did make modules and make modules_install (cos I typed module_install and had to retype). And I'm also sure I compiled it in with a Y rather than as a loadable module (M). Any ideas? Slackware 8 - Cups

This one has got me confused. I have installed Cups 1.1.14 on Slackware 8 to try and get my printer working ( Samsung ML1210 ). Using Konqueror to set up cups http//localhost:631/ I have installed my printer and it shows it as working, but it prints nothing. When I try a test print I get this error client-error-not-possible I do not know where to go from here. Any help would be gratefull to me as well as John Seago as I have got to install his printer as well. Full archives of ALUG since June 2000 now on-line!

I have now integrated the old ALUG archives (when ALUG's mailing list was hosted on rabbit.stu.uea.ac.uk) into the current set of archives so that we now have a complete set of articles posted to the ALUG mailing lists since June, 2000. HTDig will soon pick up the additional articles and index them, so the archive will shortly be fully searchable! What's been integrated? All of the articles for the main discussion list and the announcement list between June 2000 and August 2001 when we were hosted on rabbit.stu.uea.ac.uk. Can I search the ALUG archives as well as browse them? Yes, simply visit http://www.alug.org.uk/search, or http://lists.alug.org.uk/search. This is all because msaccess outputs reports in html as separate pages and names them filePageTwo.html, filePageThree.html etc etc. The output html files are then sent to the web server, but the page I link from has the file link simply as "file.html" and thus other files are not displayed. of course, i could have a row of links, but they are not always needed and I think this is messy and could lead to misinformation if old data is displayed. So I've been doing the cat filePagetwo >> file.html up till now. Dearest of Teds - thanks for all that, I must admit to being a bit overwhelmed though. I was thinking to run a bit of php code when the page was accessed, to trigger the cat file2 >> file. The $bigfile = join(file("filename1"), file("filename2")); print $bigfile; suggested by Brett does exactly what I need....I just need to figure out how to run the damned thing now! (I do need to find out how to trigger a script when web page is accessed though, as I need to delete appended pages so they won't be appended the next day (if there is a page two one day but not the next the old page two will append when we don't want it).) You never actually need to generate the static page, also, if you *really* want to cheat, upload the files to a different directory (one that you know will only hold them) then using a small php script in the webtree concat all the files together and splat them out the other end, this has the down side of server load but the plus side of ease... <?php $content = ""; $d = dir("/path/to/files/"); while ($entry = $d->read()) { if ( filetype($entry) == "file" ) { $content = join($content, file($entry)); } } print $content; ?> as always - this is more or less off the top of my head, and hasn't been tested at all, I think that should work and will go > 2 files, not sure if the order will be correct thou. Can anyone help me with a bit of php? I need to append the copntents of one file on to another when a web page is accessed. Cron is no use as the timing isn't fixed. I can append a line of text so far, but not the contents of a file, and as I'm away for the rest of the week and have been doing this manually till I find the fix, I'm panicking! - - help! I'm only a young whippersnapper(17), and learnt how to use a computer with a 386 dx 44(Which is still around somewhere with Doom2 yeah!).and Win 3.1 when I was 11. As my dad has been in the computer world for 25+ years he had been using Linux since 0.9X (with a smug smile as well) He always used to tell me that MS was really a load of poopoo. I upgraded computer and os to MS win 95. Then I dicovered the joys of Linux. The one thing that attracted me to linux was The Gimp. My first linux distro was Redhat 6.2 Ahhh the memories; trying desperatly to compile some game or other and wondering what the hell this make and make install buisness was about. one other thing that stick out in my mind is my dad showing me this thing called the world wide web, This must have been when I was about nine/ten. Ahh the halowed sounds of a 14.4k modem :) PS Who is the youngest person on this list?

I've just added reviews for Downloader for X and Audiogalaxy Satellite in the Software Directory for the ALUG website (!!HINT!!) I thought I'd add some reviews of that kind, cos newbies tend to want to know that they can do in Linux the same things they used to do on the Mac/Windows- at least it was a major consideration for me when switching over. I also browsed the site before I joined ALUG/installed Linux after following a link from Linux Format... It's be nice to see other reviews on the site, I'm sure veterans and newbies alike could contribute something (hell, I'm a newbie)... (hinthint). Here's a related question to both of them: when sending an xhtml attachment to an email, and attaching referenced images, how do you refer to them from the xhtml part? Just curious. input /output error on smbmounted directory

[Thinks, what am I doing in at work on a lovely saturday....] Can anyone help me on this?......I mounted a shared directory on my windows machine onto a directory called /jenshare on my linuxbox using smbmount. Then i went home, switched off the windows machine and forgot all about it. Now I have an error coming up right left and centre "File 'jenshare' exists but can not be stat-ed: Input/output error" Doing a ls-l / doesn't show the directory jenshare (I/O error again), however ls -a / does show it. I'm a bit stuffed here....can anyone offer assistance? Thanks. Jenny.

My first installation was RdHat6.2 on a laptop, I then built a computer from old cast-off bits from work and put RedHat6.2 on that. That was in autumn 2000. Late 2001 saw me installing debian on another old unwanted box at work, I then installed it on the box at home, and then the laptop. As I type I am installing a more recent version of debian onto a brand new box fresh in from the shop. When I installed on the box I built myself with old cronky hardware, it took me months to get anything going. This install here it is all "just working". Still, it is good to learn the hard way. I'm also running experiments on a hacked-about kernel running on an ipaq http://www.toby-churchill.org Jen.

Kernel compile/W00t! was RE:NVIDIA/X

ThankyouThankyouThankyouThankyou! Just compiled my first kernel from source (2.4.17), and- wow! That was scarily easy! THEN I compiled the NVIDIA kernel& GLX from source. Weeeeeeeeeeee! Hurrah for openGL! Any other newbies out there- follow the instructions in the HOWTO's and voila (helps if you use LILO as most docs are on that)! Anyways, only two probs: 1 module won't load, I'll see to that when it becomes a problem. The second one, though, is that it won't automatically mount hda8 (I can do it from BASH), because it says I have too many filesystems. Checking /etc/fstab I appear to have 2 swap files (oops, I mean *partitions*) mounted??????? Eh??? I didn't put that there! Any idea how it might have got there? I'm removing it, so only the correct one is present. Just bugs me how it got there. SFPack & Soundfonts in Linux

Here's a tricky one! I've managed to get ALSA and Timidity working quite nicely on my Linux box, despite its being only an ex-skip P166. Now I want to load a particular set of sound fonts. I've already got the usual GUS and Midia sets and now I've downloaded two sets that I particularly want. They're both packed in some format called SFPack, which seems to be a windoze type of format. I've searched around on Google but I haven't located anything that seems to come remotely close to SFPack that runs on Linux. Since I don't have windoze, I'm stuck. This is highly frustrating. Please does anyone have any ideas? Gerald.

RedHat have a thing called HAS - High Accessability Server which allows you to connect as many machines as you like together and they play as one! pcmcia and laptop issue

Hello All, just a thanks to all who have helped with my laptop and the pc card not working thing. A brief history for those not at the last meeting: This laptop originally had on RH6.2, the pc card (buffalo) wouldn't work at all. Then I installed debian with a 2.2.18pre21 kernel, and it half worked, but the interrupts kept being dropped and it was very humpty. At the last meeting we installed a new kernel (2.2.4 I think but not having the laptop here I can't check, or was it 2.4 something? I really ought to know these things but life is too short to know *everything*!) but then discovered this particular kernel handles pcmcia differently and it has to be loaded as a separate module. So last night I downloaded pcmcia.cs latest version onto a floppy, copied to laptop, configured and ran make, and hey presto! it works beautifully. Cheers, Jenny.

OK. So I decided to test this.... I used the 'which package to use' program from Nvidia. Backed up XF86Config and XF86Config-4. I downloaded the .rpms, and installed them as root in runlevel 4 (5 starts up X). I got an error with the kernel rpm: modprobe can't find NVdriver. find / | grep NVdriver can't find it either. Where did it go? :'( I rebooted to runlevel 4 again just incase. (5 starts x it's a RH7.2 machine). I run startx . Well, all I can say is... thank fsck for ext3! I fiddled with my XF86Config-4 file and managed to get it so it doesn't lock up, but it exits saying it can't find the NVdriver module still. So I downloaded the source tars. I run a make on the kernel modules. It can't find the headers! I boot into my trusty MDK8.0 system, get online, look up every FAQ I can find and some NVIDIA walkthroughs on linuxnewbie.I need to add (apparently) SYSINCLUDE=/lib/modules/2.4.9-21/build/include Only.... there's no such path. It stops at /lib/modules/2.4.9-21/ and the contents DOES have something called BUILD in it, that is flashing for some reason. recovery from disaster/rebuilding kernel

I am going to attempt to rebuild my kernel (gulp). Now, if I TOTALLY screw it up (likely), I want to know if it is possible for me to preserve my /home partition, and my X configuration: 1. Will the new kernel build impact on my X configuration? I know that my kernel has the NVdriver module installed (the one that came with X 4.1.0), but I'm concerned as to whether if I rebuild the kernel from source, it will require a new installation of X? 2. I have a separate /home partition, on a separate drive (hdb) to where / resides (hda). I did this incase hda fails.However, as I understand it, even if I make a user with the same name and password and mount /home to the old /home partition, I will still not be able to access any of the files due to permissions- am I right? If so, would there be a way to save the user info on floppy/CD whatever so that if I did fsck it all up, I could just start an install from scratch and use those files to get access to the old /home? Multiple NICs

OK, I'm wondering if this is possible in Linux: One server, thebeast.mydomain.com , has 2 NICS. 1 has an IP of 10.0.0.1, the other of 10.0.0.2 . It is connected to a switch (which has a few other servers attached), and the switch to the rest of the LAN. It's a pretty critical server, under quite heavy load. Is there any way that a client could connect to thebeast.mydomain.com and sometimes connect to one IP, sometimes to another? I'm looking for fault tolerance as well as load balancing between the network cards. I know that Intel Server adapters do this on NT and Novell. Anyone have any ideas? Would it involve DNS jiiggerypokery? i.e. DNS server sending requests to 1 IP then another. Or maybe a switch that could do it? Debain transition

Hi all, I've recently tried out Debian (woody) and was very impressed. I'm new to debian, but not Linux/GNU. I've lived with various distributions in the past, Slakware, Redhat, then SuSE. I found myself with a few problems under debian, for example getting my usb keyboard and mouse working. I know how to hack them into submission, but I'm sure it's not done it the "Debian way". I'm missing /dev entires for most usb devices, I get the impression there must be a .deb for this ? keybdev also needs to be modprobed (so I added it to /etc/modules). (I'm running kernel 2.4.x) I have many other little niggles, so I guess I should RTM. Anyway, my question is: Is there a good website/book that is aimed at experienced users who wish to migrate from other distributions to Debian? Thanks, Mike

VNC problems

I would imagine the problem here is due to the firewalls. Can you VNC on to machines outside your firewall? If so your firewall is configured to map the VNC connections correctly. If not you'll have to configure your firewall to do that before you arrange for the clients to be configured - if they'll allow it cos its a bit of a security hole apparently. It shouldnt be difficult - if you/they can browse then there will be mappings for port 80 so they just need to be copied for whatever vnc uses. If you're doing work fro them I would recommend at the very least that VNC is not run as an autostart service but when you need to connect they start the listening service and the service is terminated when you have done to prevent any unwarranted intrusion. Ideally you should get them to disable the VNC access through the firewall when its not required just in case someone 'clocks the wrong button' and leaves someone else in charge on a PDC! Long-range wireless LAN

Come to think of it, ALUG should be a damn good place to ask this question ... A friend of mine, much knowledgeable, tells me that with directional antennae a line-of sight range of 10-15 miles should be attainable for wireless LAN. But it's equally a question of finding hospitality at the far end. Well, out here in the midst of optically flat nowhere, line of sight to almost anywhere is no problem. Problem is, almost everywhere is uninhabited. Nearest place which might have an accommodating college or such is Ely (10 miles, but on a nice mountain which boosts line-of-sight visibility). So there you are. I'm groping. But there must be some of you who've at least thought about this in similar terrain; so if anyone has any comments or suggestions I'd be most interested to hear! It might lead to an improvement on my current 33.6k bit rate ... and, come to think of it, converting Ely Cathedral to a LAN hub is a tempting notion. Hardware problem?

I am experiencing an intermittent problem with my linux box. It has started to occur over the last few days while I was adding a USB zip drive to my system. At one point, as I was having problems with unmounting the zip drive, I thought I would switch to windoze, load the drivers and just check the problem was not with the drive itself. Well after a whole bunch of blue screens of death I gave up on windows and decided to reboot linux and delete windoze entirely. That;s when the first problems occurred. I seemed to have a corrupt file system. I ran the RedHat 7.2 CD in rescue mode, fixed things with e2fsck and I thought all was OK. Then this afternoon, playing around with rc.local and modules.conf to get USB up, running and mounted automatically, I started experiencing problems. I rebooted to try a new configuration and suddenly got lots of errors during booting and a freeze. Even the RH rescue CD crashed - it kept getting SIG 11 and shutting down and when it occasionally did run, e2fsck would seg fault. Now, a couple of hours later, it boots up perfectly first time and I am happily typing the email. So, what do you think the problem is most likely to be? Ian

Debian install from Parallel CD-ROM

I'm trying to load Debian from a parallel CD-Rom, but cannot find an appropriate image for a boot floppy. The Installation CD-Rom seems to have a rescue.bin, but I'm not sure if this'll work or in fact how to make a boot floppy from this. I can find any documentation on this! :( Erm... help! "Reverse" VNC

I use VNC a lot for both Linux and 'Doze support work, but there's a shortcoming as far as "hidden" machines are concerned. What I need is a sort of reverse VNC for accessing machines where I don't know the IP address. Let me explain what I want to do: Run a VNC-type "server": a remote client connects to it, and I can then, from my "server" control the client machine. For dial-up/DHCP/NAT situations where I can't reach a client directly, I need the client to be able to initiate the connection, but thereafter it to behave as if I'd done a normal VNC connect into it. Does anyone have any ideas? Where better to ask? It needs to support Linux and 'Doze, and at least 'Doze...
