I would like to have regular sunday meetings in Norwich every two months, held regularly on the last weekend of the month (i.e. roughly mid-way between the mid-monthly evening meetings). 1. Syleham is planned for every third month so every six months there would be a possible overlap. But, provided we don't choose the same date, I suggest that it is worth trying out since the extra mileage means that for some people Syleham is just that bit too far south of Norwich and for others Norwich is a little too far north compared to Syleham. 2. Use of UEA facilities with bandwidth would be great if it could be arranged regularly and reliably. If not then a reasonable venue that happens is better than a great venue that doesn't. **If there is anyone on the list who is able to book a room at UEA please contact me.** Can people who work at UEA book rooms? As has been said before, you don't need to do anything except make the booking. No organising, no responsibility to take, nothing... unless you want to do more of course :-) Any comments on these suggestions? Syd

[Alug]isdn card

I've bought an ISDN pcmcia card (may be cardbus, not sure) to use with a Thinkpad T23 running mandrake 9.1. It is made by IBM and has the name "International ISDN PC card" printed on it. P/N is 09N3606 I (perhaps naively) assumed that it would be recognised as a serial port just like my pc-card analogue modem but it isn't. If I'm logged in to a console as root when I insert it then I get a message to the effect that it is an unsupported card, product info "ISDN", "CARD" followed by function: 6 (network) I've spent some time with google but am still not sure whether it is possible to use it with linux. Any and all help, advice or explanations suitable for a puzzled novice will be very welcome. TIA Syd

Bourne Grammar School in Lincolnshire will be holding a general 'Open Day' on 2nd October after school finishes for the day (I *really* hope that date is right ). I'm in the sixth form there and hopefully will be showing off my 'GNU/Linux Lab' on the day. Any luggers are more than welcome to attend to have a peep and make suggestions for future improvements. Please don't expect anything special as I'm new to Linux myself, it's basically 6 workstations running a hard disk install of Knoppix (main reason being ease of re-installing if someone breaks something) and a Debian web server, all low spec machines that are surpless to requirements elsewhere in the school. They're wired into the school's windows NT/2000 network and the 2 meg ADSL line. The workstations currently don't *do* much either as they've only been there since the beginning of term! It's nothing like the established system I've heard about at Skegness and *still* haven't been to see ;) I'd really appreciate the support, and if you do come up to the IT rooms and I start to try and explain Linux to you *please* stop me before I embarrass myself completely! I could do with some help convincing the Director of ICT that Linux in school is a good idea if I'm going to have a lasting effect before I leave :) Confirmation of date and a more specific time to follow. Are you planning a separate firewall machine eg adsl -- firwall -- desktops, servers ? If so, the short version of your design goal is to turn off everything on the firewall except reply packets, then forward ports from the outside to the inside only for what you need. Example: firewall has a "real" IP of 1.1.1.1, and an "inside" IP of 10.1.1.1 You sould make your gateway 10.1.1.1 on the machines inside the firewall, and set the firewall up to NAT packets from the lan to the outside. if you have a web server that you want to host at 1.1.1.1 port 80, you would port forward 1.1.1.1 port 80 to 10.1.1.2 port 80, for example. If you are just surfing the web, reading email, and not running any servers, that's dead easy. You can even just ensure that a single desktop machine isn't running any unwanted services and run without a firewall. The best ways to check what ports you have open are the following: nmap localhost (this portscans yourself) lsof -i (this lists any open TCP/IP ports) chkconfig --list | grep :on (this shows what daemons are running on many linux distros) you can also man iptables to see the built-in firewall commands.. iptables -nvL will list any firewall rules in place packet mangling is really only necessary if you want to create some fancy custom rules to allow stateful protocols through, to do complex packet tracking, or other stuff outside the realm of a normal home firewall. If you would like more detail on any of those options, or some sample iptables rule pop up another message and I'm sure that many of us will be able to help! DB

FORD is joining the ranks of governments and local authorities across the world that have switched from Microsoft software to the free open-source alternative Linux. The car giant will run its sales operations, human resources, customer relations management and the rest of its infrastructure operations on the upstart technology. Until now, defectors to Linux have largely been national governments such as China and local authorities in countries like Germany concerned that Microsoft’s Windows operating systems represented a security risk by not allowing them to inspect the source code, the systems’ software foundations, for weaknesses. * Business software applications can now run as easily on Linux as on Microsoft’s Windows operating systems.* Maybe this should be sent to Norwich Council? How much do we spend on Microsoft Software? As NCC has over 6,000 PC's and a wide range of servers we would need to undertake some further research into the number of MSOffice, Project, Publisher, Visio and Windows Server licences we currently have in order to give a comprehensive answer. As there has not been any significant growth in the number of PC's and servers then the number of new licences would not be great but there would be the costs of upgrades to existing licences as well as the annual maintenance costs to consider. All our new PCs come with Windows installed and therefore it is difficult to identify the actual cost for the operating system software element. Initial discussions with PC suppliers indicate there is unlikely to be any discount in buying PCs without the Windows operating system. Quantifying these costs will therefore be difficult. NCC in conjunction with other local authorities has negotiated various commercial arrangements with suppliers in order to ensure that its procurement of software achieves value for money. Some of these arrangements may be confidential and therefore it may be difficult to provide more than summary information. Is the Authority trailing free Operating Systems? Whilst 'Linux' is an excellent operating system and would be a cost-effective choice for many organisations, there are significant reasons why Norfolk County Council is not considering its use at the moment: We have a huge range of applications, many of which are specifically designed to run on Windows desktops or servers. Many of our applications will simply not run on Linux so it's not just a question of replacing the operating system. We would have to evaluate all of our systems to identify which are and aren't compatible with Linux. Those that aren't will have to be rewritten or replaced. This will be a very time consuming and costly process and it would probably take many years to get a return on our investment. It will also divert resources away from other projects and impact on the day-to-day running of services as both users and support staff are trained and have to become familiar with the new systems. The risks associated with such a migration will be very high. Many of our applications help meet statutory obligations or support critical services. Since the change of operating system will impact on a large number of applications, it follows that many of the Authority's key services could also be affected. Although the Linux user-base is growing, there are a limited number of companies doing application development for the operating system. Moving to Linux now will reduce the number of software suppliers available when procuring new system. This would be particularly acute in the already specialised Local Government area. Gartner (an independent ICT research company) have recently (June 2003) conducted some research into the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the Windows v Linux desktop. These vary from a saving of £400 per user/year to an increase of £100 per user/year depending on the version of windows and the application software. These calculations did not include any of the migration costs which for a enterprise like NCC would be considerable nor the cost of dealing with document compatibility issues when trying to share documents with other users running Microsoft Office. Supported versions of Linux are not free and it would not be feasible for NCC to rely on the open-source community for support in the delivery of its business critical systems. NCC is continually looking at ways of reducing its costs and believes that bigger gains can be had from deploying desktop management tools more effectively and implementing new processes rather than migrating to a new operating system. NCC has recently worked with Gartner on developing its Technical Architecture Strategy and this included a review of its operating system and software standards. The outcome of this review was a recommendation that our strategic direction should be Microsoft. [Alug]Re-partitioning a Win laptop

Hi Folks, I've just acquired a 2nd-hand laptop which has Win98 installed in a single 6GB partition (the entire HDD). Since this software is not entirely useless (rumours to the contrary notwithstanding) I intend to keep this on say 2GB, making the remaining 4GB over to something really useful (Linux of course). So I shall be fips-ing the partition down to 2GB and then setting up Linux partitions on the remainder. This, as far as it goes, I know how to do. However, a couple of issues concern me and I'd welcome informed advice from people who've been there before. 1. At present, it seems that the Win98 is set up to look after Virtual Memory (aka swap space) in its own way ("Dear user, please don't get involved in anything as difficult as this ... just leave it to us"). I seem to recall that Windows uses some sort of "hidden file" for swapping out. Qs: Will I be treading on any toes on this front by cutting back the disk space to the first 2GB in this way? Or will Win98, next time it starts up, simply do its usual swap thing in the space it then finds available? If there would be problems, what should be done to avoid them? 2. I want to keep the power-management ("go to sleep" on inactivity timeout or on pressing the "snooze" button on the machine) available in both Win98 and Linux. Q: I believe that one of the options is "hibernate to disk", where the system state is saved somewhere on the HDD. This is a similar issue to number 1: what toes would I be treading on? Q: There is also a converse issue: If I fail to set up the Linux partitions properly, and the laptop writes its system state out to disk when it wants to sleep, could this overwrite something that shouldn't be overwritten? Again, if there could be problems, what should be done to avoid them? One other thing: it now restarts itself whenever I open and close the drive and sometimes while I'm typing. And it won't shut down properly: once power down is reached the system restarts instead. Richard

OK, in the past 2 weeks I've gotten rid of Morphix because I wanted the speed increase of LFS and whilst trying to compile KDE for lfs realised that life is too short to mess around getting stuff to compile (kdelib is a nightmare. I managed to fix one of the errors I got with my half remembered C skills (I used to be a quite good C coder until I got a job with COBOL) then I got another one about ambiguous function calls and gave up), so I gave debian another go (couldn't get X11 working last time I tried). Anyway, could someone give me an example of their sources.list file please? I assume using the UK mirrors would be good enough but thought I'd check just in case not... Secondly, can someone tell me how to just get the security updates when I do an apt-get upgrade? I'm pretty sure there is an ftp server or two which just has the security updates but I haven't been able to find it with my googling powers. I assume specifying the source when doing the upgrade will do what I want it to, but without a server to connect to I'm stuffed aren't I ;) Sorry for the debian newbie questions... BenE

To All, I have given up on the idea of having IDE RAID the costs are just too high to have a proper hardware RAID (like Adaptec cards etc). I have setup a mandrake system, as it supports RAID as an install option, which is nice! My BIOS unfortunately does not let me boot off the second drive (which is bad), which means should the first drive in the array fail I would be, well, up the paddle without a creek! What I intend to do is use a boot disk to boot the system into its RAID state, so it doesn't matter which drive is down, so my boot order will go Prim IDE, Floppy, CD. There are two things I could do with help with! 1. Why can't I boot off the secondary IDE? It comes up with L 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 etc 01DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I am sure this is a BIOS problem. 2. How \ What do I need to create the boot disk simply to kick off the boot process off any drive? My RAID config works like this: Md0 mounted on /boot is a boot array MD1 mounted on / is the rest. Any help would be great, TIA. Michael

Hi I am trying to install a progarmme called linrad (DSP), it needs svgalib which I have installed. When I make linrad I get " cannot find - lvgagl" I think it is part of svgalib, If I type whereis lvgagl I get :- linux:/home/nick/linrad-01.06 # whereis -lvgagl whereis [ -sbmu ] [ -SBM dir ... -f ] name... Dear ALUG, My DVD/CD-RW combined drive on my laptop has stopped working! I'm using Mandrake 9.1 (and Windows XP sometimes) on a PIII laptop system. Neither operating system will recognise the drive at all. The hardware itself is unlikely to be faulty as it makes all the usual noises and flashes when you put a disc in it. The sym link /dev/cdrom is missing as are the devices /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 (though the directory /dev/cdroms still exists) and /dev/scd0. (I also tried running cdrecord --scanbus out of interest and this reported that there were no suitable devices). The problem first occured when I went to put a CD in the drive and, as it opened, the machine just re-booted itself. I decided not to let it do an integrity check (Mandrake runs fsck) and it booted normally until init informed me that it had found a new device: /dev/scd0 and asked me if I wanted to run config tools for it, OK I said. It finished booting but it had made no difference. If anyone has any ideas then please let me know. Thanks very much, Richard

To All, I have been looking about a bit on the web and trying to read up on IDE Hardware raid cards for Linux. I am trying to build a small server for my website. I would really like hardware raid RAID 1 (mirroring) as software raid will be difficult to setup on the slackware install I am trying to do! Can anyone tell me how I can get a boot.b file for Lilo? I'm running Debian Testing and there is no boot.b file in my /boot directory. I also have another machine running Debian Testing and that has no boot.b file either. The Lilo package doesn't contain a boot.b file and running Lilo doesn't create one. The Lilo documentation doesn't explain where it comes from. I'm trying to re-create some Mindi emergency boot discs and that appears to require this file. Just been lurking for a while as we have been mega busy at work coping with the aftershocks from a major product release. However I have been following the discussions :o) Just a quick note to say that I haven't forgotten a whole list of things I put my name to, e.g. - T-Shirts/Sweatshirts - Contacting someone at The Forum about use of exhibition/demo spaces - Taking ownership of the graphics web page - Distro survey page - Name badges I'm off on my hols for the next couple of weeks but I will start addressing these once I get back.. promise... honest! Will definitely be there on the 28th in the audience only, sorry my knowledge is far too scanty to try and BS anyone else on this list! As I live round the corner it's not likely that I can offer any lifts but I'm happy to ferry people back and forth from the train station or bus stops. Just e-mail me off list if I can help in any way. And following on from the discussion about meetings, my general view is that I will try and get along to any meeting I can where my time isn't preempted by other commitments. So the point about what's a reasonable distance really breaks down into how long it takes to travel there and back. My gut feel is that anything over an hour is probably too long. This is very late, but at least it's here now. On 21 August, a small and hardy band of ALUGgers started a new chapter in the group's history with the first meeting in Ely. Daniel, Rob, MJR, Kirsty, Adam and Steven (or, if you prefer, Kinnison, rjek(?), slef, wildduck, quinophex and, erm, Steven) met up at the Cutter on Ely's waterside, chatted, scoped out the place, ate, drank and were merry, then walked up the hill to the Fountain, chatted, drank and were merry (who needs food?). Then I had to run back for a train so I'd be up in time for work the following morning (and maybe someone can tell me if I missed anything worth posting). I enjoyed it and (as predicted) preferred the Fountain to the Cutter for bber. So, I suggest we meet up again and maybe gather more adherants. When's good for others? Evening of the 17th or afternoon of the 20th? Can someone else try their luck at getting info on the old dispensory as a meeting venue for late-ish October, please? This has happened only since I changed inetd for xinetd and lsof -i :600 gives me: xinetd 16112 root 6u IPv4 318948149 UDP *:600 which I understand means that xinetd is using port 600. Please could someone shed some light on this: I received a CD-rom from the USA this morning, which contains a load of directories, in each of which is a selection of HTML files and related .JPG and .GIF images. There is also a front page .HTML file in the root directory and that file has links to all of the other pages scattered about the CD. I can start up Opera/Mozilla and open the front page without any difficulty, but all links are unreachable. When I move the cursor over a link, I find that its address is shown as (for example) 'file:///fred/somepage.htm', whereas I would have expected it to be '/mnt/cdrom/fred/somepage.htm'.... On the CD jewel case it says that the CD is for Doze and that 'other browsers may not work properly'. Is there a solution to this? It seems as though all the files are separately accessible - I can open any .HTM file manually in Opera, but the links don't work. Thanks for any help! Gerald.

At the last meeting it was suggested that we have the 'From Boot to Halt' talk at the next Norwich sunday meeting (2pm Sunday 28th September, Nelson Room, The Billy Bluelight, Hall road) MJR has offered to start it off: " I'm happy to give an overview/introduction talk (kernel startup, hand-off to init, types of init, runlevels, common tasks, that sort of thing) and present a poster on some aspect no-one else wants to do." It would be great if there are one or two other people who are willing to join in with information on other aspects of the boot process, especially anyone involved in development or doing any other "fun stuff with start-up and shutdown". An A3 or 2xA4 poster would be helpful too. Some useful and interesting topics would include ways to handle power management/UPS, particularly as more people move to using laptops. Something on APM/ACPI for example? Anyone who is interested, please respond either to the list or privately to either myself and/or Mark. In any event, the introductory talk on the boot process will take place at this meeting - further details and announcement to follow. Syd

Hi The Do Different Computer Show that was discussed on IRC has been cancelled. However as a replacement a Spectrum and SAM Coupé computer Show called ORSAM 2003 is to be held in Norwich. All, I have often looked in awe at IP Cameras, and we have recently done a job for a customer involving some, but they are sooo expensive, well more than £150. I like the Dlink DCS 1000 et al. I would like to build one using a spare miniITX box I have and a Logitech Web Cam Pro I have USB. Couple of questions! 1. Does Linux support Logitech Web cam pro 2. Is there console web cam software that I coule use to upload to a local apache server? 3. Is there a premade distro designed for this use, or could I make one somehow? I guess the ITX box needs to do the following! 1. Support the webcam 2. Have a NIC 3. Run apache for the images 4. All run off a compact flash card, no moving parts and all that! err, I think thats it. Any how, let me know what you think. Regards, Michael

My local telephone exchange is becoming broadband enabled at the end of September and I am working on the assumption that I will be able to use it (BT's site says I MAY). I have a firewall running (Endoshield - very easy to set up) and have just changed it to Bastille which seems to be working (grc.com). Bastille recommends 'psad' which is also now installed. I had Snort and Samhain installed but do I need these? Do I need Packet Mangling enabled in the Kernel which it isn't at present? A small but perfectly formed gathering - Keith, Syd, Mark and Paul. Very interesting and enjoyable natter ensued. Because of many and various other monthly events (NPCUG, RUNG, PLUG), I propose that the meets be on the seconfd thursday of each month from now on. Next Norwich evening meet on thursday 10th July. That'll be a 25 way serial port then not a parallel port. That's what they all used to look like until recently when they tend to all be 9 pin ones. Most of the pins in the 25 pin ones aren't used any more (or ever really especially for RS232). Hi list: Any idea if you can plug a modem into a parallel port and expect it to work? The laptop in question has but one serial port, which is needed for the external mouse. The modem cable has a double-end at the laptop end, with both a serial plug that fits and a parallel that doesn't as it is the wrong gender. Using a gender-bender and setting modem port to /dev/lp0 I got no response. Jen

Because I often use my browser (Opera, Mozilla) for viewing pages that are stored locally, I set the URL of the home page to be file://localhost/home/gerald/ so that I get a display of that directory whenever the browser starts up. That works well enough for me, except that all of the hidden directories and files are shown at the top of the list and there are lots of them, which means that I have to scroll down quite a way to get to the things that I actually want to click at. Is there some sort of command or environmental variable that can be adjusted (in Opera/Mozilla or somewhere else) that keeps hidden things hidden in the browser's display of my home directory? Any ideas, please, anyone? Cheers, Gerald.

Hi Folks, I have just checked my firewall log and found it packed full of Port 135 probes. It looks like they have been occurring two or three times per second from a wide variety of IP Addresses throughout all today. Have any other ALUGers been getting inundated with these probes as well? Ian.

Evening all, I'm just playing with my new morphix install and was wondering if you lot could answer a couple of questions (one strange and one vague)? The strange question is whether it's possible to halt apt-get when it's downloading stuff without losing what's already been downloaded? Until I get hooked up with broadband I'm on a dialup with a 2 hour cutoff which sort of limits what I can download in that time. I'm just looking for a way around it... The vague question is that morphix doesn't install any of the header files so it's a bit of a bugger trying to compile anything from source. So far I've had to try googling 'stdio.h' or whatever to try and work out what package it's in. Can someone tell me some of the most likely dev packages I'll need (see, told you it was vague) or possibly a better way of locating them myself? ta muchly, BenE (This debian lark is much harder than compiling everything from scatch <g>)

Wow, I have just surfed over to http://www.virginradio.co.uk/thestation/listen/index.html To pick up a music stream to listen to and I was greeted with this message "Hello, Linux user! Virgin Radio is available in your favourite MP3 player (and Real) - the other stations are just in Real format. You can download a Linux version of Real Player from Real.com. You can also listen to our Windows streams with Crossover." I think that is the first time I've seen browser/os detection on a website and it hasn't displayed a "Your not using IE6 on Windows XP, GO AWAY" message. What a nice change.

Please add to this... ALUG turned out at Elmswell (Thanks to Adam!) to watch "Debbie does Silicon Vall^W^W^W^W Revolution OS" (Thanks to Big John!) on the big screen at at (Thanks to Rob!). In the best cinema tradition, we assembled in the foyer, got our drinks and snacks (Thanks to Keith!) and then went into the auditorium. You can read a bit about the film itself on the web site, or you can ask those of us who were there about it. Afterwards, we had a bit of a chat about it, exchanged interesting tales (Fozzy, Barry, Keith) and dull ones (MJR) or just sat in a corner (Brett) and wondered: just when was Red Hat 5.1 released? Why didn't the guy in the penguin suit rugby-tackle Larry? How can we get free beer? Is 45 a good idea in a 30 zone? ;-) We also had a bit of a chat about what to do next. Ideas from the rest of the list are welcome, of course. Here or on IRC. * 1984 marks 20 years of the GNU project (the film reminded us of this), so how about a 20th birthday installfest in the new year? (March?) We could do a "mini-InstallFest" later this year for practice/testing. Need at least 10 installers to help. * Keith is interested in a Debian-themed meeting, maybe Syleham in November, as Big John is interested too and we can try to drag a developer kicking and screaming from Norwich. * Quite a few people are interested in a "from boot to halt" themed meeting explaining the boot process, shutdown process and so on. Just what do all those messages scrolling past actually *mean*? What causes them to do that? How do we change them? Perhaps we could have a short overview talk and some people taking aspects of this with posters so we can still play with kit. MJR is gullible enough to offer to help: who else? Is it possible to do this in Norwich? * Get our spare kit to people who have offered to hold kit (Colin?) * A Linux and Jam Tart Eating contest. (WTF? Eating Linux CDs?) * Sort out meeting transport and travel in groups. Encourage lurker members to come and swell our numbers. The bit that worries me about this story actually working in IT in a School is that it doesn't say that the Government will bulk buy licences it says the Government will bulk buy computer equipment with the licences to save Schools the licence costs. The Government bulk buying IT equipment is a joke. I also fail to see where they get this £70 from ours is £36.63 and even if we added the couple of titles not on our agreement this certainly wouldn't more than double the price. Cheers, Ben Norcutt

I made the mistake last night of looking in my sent mail folder which automatically sorts any mail according to my filters, so all my mail I've sent here gets put in my 'alug' folder. Today, I accidently managed to send all the outgoing mail that has been frozen by exim in the past. So...I can't tell whether the deluge of mail from me in my alug folder is because of my messing up last night or today. If the rest of you have received a lot of old mail from me today then I apologise and I hope it won't happen again since I'm installing debian tmrw (well, morphix) and that should be better configured (hopefully). [Alug]Disk imaging

Anyone got any experiences with disk imaging software? I've used Norton Ghost in the past (didn't like it at all, but that was quite a long time ago and to be honest I can't really remember why - may have been the fact that you had to license a copy for every machine you used it on, so to clone 9 machines from a master required 10 licenses - as I said, it's a while ago now). Currently I'm using Drive Image from Powerquest, but as that doesn't support (spit) XP I'm going to have to upgrade. I've been looking at Norton Ghost (v8), Powerquest Drive Image (v7) and Active Disk Image. So far the last one is favourite as it is compact enough to fit on a floppy and doesn't mess around with GUIs and Windows installs. I'm also a little confused as to the suitability of the other two which talk about automated backups from Windows etc.. In particular Drive Copy looks to be the appropriate product from Powerquest, but Drive Image is the one that supports XP. [Alug]Distro Survey

Finally got organised enough to collate the replies to date. So far I've got 12 here on my UKFSN account (there are a couple more that were sent to my work email a/c and I'll add them in later). So it seems that 8 of the responders used a single distro, 2 of you had 2 distros installed, one had 3 distros installed and one brave soul has 5 distros (counting Knoppix, etc). Most of the responders had at least 2 machines with GNU/Linux running on them, 3 of you had 5 boxen set up and one had 7. Only me and one other person had a single system to play with. Debian seemed to be the most popular distro with the respondents. In all 8 of you said it was your distro of choice. 2 of you preferred Red Hat, one LFS, one Slackware and one Mandrake. Other distros you also use for various reasons are; Red Hat, Slackware, SUSE, Gentoo, OpenZaurus (is this a distro?), Smoothwall, Knoppix and Morphix. 9 respondents have dual boot set-ups with Windows and there were 3 hard core purists who win the RMS award! :o) So in summary based on the limited sample; Debian is the most commonly installed distro, mostly on at least 2 machines and usually dual boot with Windows. Maybe we should have a web page with these figures displayed in some sort of tabular form and also a standing invite for people to email me with their own setups. I append a copy of an article on Hitec's web site concerning their 'new components' for gcc that allow it to compile for the C166 micro. Any comments? Some Myths Dispelled About GNU-C For C166 (and Tricore)…. The C166 has two excellent "commercial" C compilers from Keil and Tasking. There is however a third compiler from Hightec EDV that is based on the GNU-C but which costs about the same as the two well known offerings. However there is a widespread belief that as this compiler is based on GNU-C, it is "free" and some have complained that Hightec's £2000 licence charge is unreasonable and not in the spirit of the Free Software Foundation. As a result, some people are using copies of the Hightec GNU-C for C166 downloaded from various websites or circulated by email. In fact the licence position with the GNU-C for C166 is that the parts defined by Hightec to allow C166 code generation are proprietary and therefore are chargeable. This is (apparently) within the scope of the GNU T&C's and thus Hightec's work is not available from GNU free of charge. Indeed the first line of the GNU public licence says "free is not free" and here, "free" means unimpeded or unbounded rather than without charge. Thus it is acceptable to make money from GNU-derived software like the GNU-C compiler. Programmers are not obliged to put into the public domain new components they have developed for GNU compilers. It is only changes to the core of the compiler that must be made public and lodged with GNU. Thus Hightec's C166 code generator and front-end processor are chargeable. Therefore people using the Hightec GNU-C without a Hightec licence are not strictly legal. Hightec to some extent are doing what Red Hat and Montevista have done with Linux i.e. take loads of disparate pieces of software and make a shrink-wrapped, complete embedded toolchain, in this case for C166 (and Tricore). [Alug]About Gentoo Linux?

I've just read something on Daniel James' 'Linux User Bulletin' that's got me thinking. There was mention of Gentoo Linux and it said that Gentoo was 'self-building'. Does that mean that, when one installs Gentoo, all the packages get automatically compiled for the processor that's actually in the machine, rather than defaulting to a 386 or something? Does that also mean that it takes an absolute age to install? And is it really much of an improvement over, say, my favourite Slackware? Sorry if these are dumb questions, but to a Bear of Very Little Brain (TM), it's perplexing and interesting all at the same time - maybe a bit like a jar of honey whose lid won't come off.... (Oh dear - guess what I've been reading lately?) Any enlightenment, please, anyone? Cheers, Gerald.

I've very nearly gotten my zaurus to link with my PC (they're pinging each other now), and the next step is to get qtopia desktop installed. Unfortunately, it's only available as an RPM and I'm strictly a compile from source person. So, I have 2 choices (that I can see) 1: install RPM 2: extract the files from the RPM using the program that was mentioned on here last week I think. I am leaning towards option 2 but I'm unsure about the dependencies. Is there a way I can work out where the various dependencies it needs should be? Not specifically linux - hope no-one is bothered by that. You people are my front-line support for any compter advice. I've just bought a T-series Thinkpad. It has Lithium-Ion batteries. AFAIR these do not have the 'memory' effect so does that really mean in practice that it is perfectly OK to give short booster charges no matter what the state of charge/discharge? Also, I think I've seen somewhere that keeping the laptop on mains power withthe battery installed will lead to reduced battery life. Is this the case? TIA Syd

Long windy email which took me a while to type and then probably dosnt make much sense: Brief Summary: I dont believe Open Source software has to be userfriendly. I feel **VERY** strongly that the programmer has the right to be "free" in their programming and make non-user friendly interfaces IF THEY SO WISH, and that the dicussion over "they SHOULD" make userfriendly or "people should" is at basically wrong, because they are getting a free ride out of the software that the programmer probbably has a lot more better stuff to be doing. This is not a(nother) personal attack at Ben, but just the statement that his argument "I dont have time to learn something to do something like that because I have "more important" stuff to do" (where more important is whatever his or her REAL job, school work, etc) I am reversing to use against him. "Programmers dont have time to cope with the "whims" of those people who make a preference to do non-really harsh techinal stuff, becasue we have something "more important" to do" (where more important is whatever new toy we've just bought is). Did I stress that I feel VERY strongly about this. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And for the full bloated boring bit: I should first admit here and now that I winge when a config file is ... wierd or difficult to understand, and I also admit that I ask for help in it.... Knowing when to ask for help is always a brilliant trait in my opinion. Im going to assume here that I was in the IRC discussion. I think I was, I think I stormed out of it to Cambridge. Hell, I had to go... I think the discussion went along the lines of: ben: "theres no gui, this is too hard because i dont understand it/dont have time to understand it/dont want to understand it" (note this is not a dig at ben, all three options are perfectly acceptable. I dont understand the XWidget functions.... i dont want to understand them, so dont want to waste time learning them) us: "There isnt a function because no-ones written one... everyone who has needed one just learnt how to do it, and then couldnt bearsed to write a gui, becasue they could do it and didnt need a gui after that" ben: "but thats wrong" us: "no, its not, because we know how to do it"... and so on The fact that I had written another (command line) script which did this function, and tied it into a webpage was irrelavant, no one had "released" and "packaged" one for "simple" and "easy" installer. So perhaps we where being pigheaded. But that dosnt stop us being wrong. The title of this discussion is "Linux for everyone". But I disagree. Thats not what people mean in this discussion at all. The arguement is really about what do the people who are actually programming have to do, and what the people are gettng the free ride want them to do. Becasue we're not talking about Linux here. We where talking about Fluxbox. Flux box isnt linux. You dont need linux to run fluxbox. So perhaps im just nitpicking the title of the topic, but I dont think so, I think im nitpicking at OpenSource programmers and advogatoists in general. I support Open Source as is the solution to a lot of my problems. Im happy and proud to release the majority of my source code into the public domain, I really do like the idea of open specifications and industry wide standards that are kept to and maintained. But I dont like the idea that people can turn around and tell me that im doing something "wrong". If I want to pass data between two computers in a completly propietry way, then I should be allowed to, open source or not. What has that got to do with GUI? well its just another thing being "difficult" or should i really say "unknown". Thats freedom isnt it? Sure, you might say I have to have freedom to do things with connection and making it easy for people to connect, but perhaps I dont want to make life easier for you programmers. Perhaps my methods provide abetter service in terms of processor speed, or memory allocation or whatever argument I'm using. Im allowed to, its my program after all. And perhaps at this time, I cant expect people to conform to my propietry standards. But then again, perhaps I can, I can point to several case examples where a client turns round to us and says we'll offer you this data in an electronic fomat in this formatt "blat" and we have to parse it. Its either that or type it all in by hand (which is what we do before we set up the electronic link). We dont get any choice, we just get down and do it. - but we're techis. And thats what we're paid to do. Perhaps Open Source is just too policial. Perhaps you're stuck between a bunch of idealistics who would kill people who defie the GPL license and a bunch of programmers who just couldnt care less as long as you can use the code to solve your problem. At the end of the day. If my boss comes in and says "I need to do ... **THIS** then I will automatically look at how its done now, and how it works. If my program I write for him infringes a patent established four years ago, how would I know? Would I care? no. Nobody else would know about it, I wouldnt ever get into trouble unless I started distributing the code." You people who are sitting there saying "its hard to use, and therefore people wont use it, Do I care? No. I am not one of those people, I do not benifit by them using my code. if they WISH to use my code and they dont know how, then they cancontact me and I might help them, or they could pay a local person to install it for them and configure it. You dont do your own car servicing do you (ignore that comment those people in here that do (iDunno for starters))? And you guys are probably the techincal elite. Why expect non-techincal people who dont [want] to understand to be able to do it. Even if you give them a "gui". Its not my problem, i dont have to solve it. And thats what OS is all about isnt it. You solve your problems and release the fixes so other people dont have them. You dont go hunting out problems to solve. (this is only in a specific bug sense - all of us do go "hm i wonder if i can....", but we dont go "oh lets just see what the latest bug report for EVERY package is and then fix it"). Open Source does **NOT** have to be for everyone. Anyone suggesting that it should, completly, without reservation, dosnt have any idea of the scale of the system and should run back to the saftey of their management course. Sure, write your gui if you want. But noone should ever start going round saying "you have to write a gui otherwise im not going to use it" because we'll just say "... ouch im hurting inside, ... no really" Remember, we're effectivly getting a free ride - **NOBODY** will stop you making a GUI for anything. **ALL** of us will support you. **MOST** of us would help you. We'll be happy to help solve the little naggliy bugs like "why dosnt this bit of regex work" and soon. HEll, if you start, you'll probably be the momentum to get a couple of us to finish it off for you, which is what you really want. I for one, will not be changing the way I program to be more userfriendly. I dont write user friendly programs. I dont really write programs which have users to interface into. Installing them are long ardious tasks. 99.9% of the population or more will not benifit from it. But for a user, any user, who dosnt *WANT* and i emphasise want here because if you did want to understand you wouldnt *MIND* can start an arugment that its not userfriendly. Sure, the guy who wrote it could ask for comments, or ask for ideas for improvements, but for people to comelong and say "no, thats pants becuase it is difficult" is (in my opinion) selfrighteous and pigheaded.

Can anyone help please? I've just bought a zaurus SL-5500 and am trying to get it to sync with linux. I've got the qtopia desktop rpm to install but still can't access my PDA. Suse (haven't got rpm installed on my lfs system) seems to think the zaurus is a modem, but that doesn't seem right to me. Could someone explain the hardware side of the process please? [Alug]Advice re GCC 3.3 and Linux 2.4.20

After playing silly buggers with apt-get upgrade at the weekend I'm now running with Gnome 2.2 (which, apart from a few minor glitches, is running well and I quite like it :o) ). I also seen to have ended up with gcc 3.3 (was 2.95) which does worry me as it's not fully cleared for use with the Linux kernel source I use (2.4.20). I tried a kernel compile, which worked after I'd fixed 3 known issues but I'm a bit cagey about actually running the new kernel. Does anyone on the list run a Linux kernel compiled with gcc 3.3 and, if so, are there any problems? I tried this query on linux-usb-users, with no luck... can my local linux community help, please? I've been following the instructions at <http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x555.html> to set up a two-machine USB network with a Linux box at one end. The command ifconfig plusb0 192.168.0.1 pointopoint 192.168.0.2 fails with the error message SIOCSIFADDR: No such device plusb0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device SIOCSIFDSTADDR: No such device plusb0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device Afterwards, ping 192.168.0.2 gets no response (i.e. 100% packet loss.) Any ideas how to fix this, please? plusb is loaded as a kernel module. The kernel version is 2.2.20. The cable between the two machines is a Vivanco "USB Network Cable," part number 10758. [Alug]Almost a linux question

This is indirectly linux-related. My newly-purchased laptop has XP installed. Mandrake 9.1 happily resized the NTFS partition and installed easily. (There is an issue related to Xfree 4.3.0 but otherwise all went very well). However in playing around late at night with other installs I have managed to do something nasty to the XP loader - MBR seems OK and the partition table seems OK so no idea what it is. One of the wierd 'hidden' partitions maybe. Although losing windows may be seen as a bonus feature not a problem <g> I wonder if any one out there can help at all? XP of course did not come with an install CD - AFAIK there should be an image on the HD somewhere. Answers off-list please and apologies to anyone who sees this is inappropriate for this list. I blame human error - and MS - not linux BTW. Regards Syd
