Good morning all. I have myself a slight dilemma. I have in excess of 500 floppy disks containing an archive of what are called surface files (Wayne could probably inform those curious a lot better than myself). Said floppy disks were created using a piece of software called WinTar to a SCSI floppy drive (it seems). And of course is on it's own unreadable. Has anyone else had any luck accessing WinTar'd media via linux? I'm all googled out! Cheers Richard

Ubuntu installation problem

I am trying to install Ubuntu 7.04 on a system for my mother in law. It boots from the CD OK and works fine as a "Live CD" system. However, when I start the 'Install' program to actually install on the hard disk the window the Install program opens is too large and can't be resized such that the important buttons at the bottom appear on the screen. Thus I can't progress the install. Is this a problem that anyone else has seen? Any ideas on how to fix it? -- Chris Green

Can anyone recommend a webcam for a laptop, a Thinkpad R51 to be specific, that will work with Debian (Testing - kernel 2.6.18)? I'd prefer the type that clips on to the lid/screen and that is small enough to go in the laptop carrying bag. "!!" in /etc/passwd

Hi Folks, Can anyone interpret the following for me? I can't find it referred to in 'man' documentation. Some "user" entries in /etc/passwd have "!!" in the encrypted password field, e.g. sshd:!!:74:74:Privilege-separated SSH:/var/empty/sshd:/sbin/nologin rpc:!!:32:32:Portmapper RPC user:/:/sbin/nologin mysql:!!:27:27:MySQL Server:/var/lib/mysql:/bin/bash postgres:!!:26:26:PostgreSQL Server:/var/lib/pgsql:/bin/bash For the acounts which have /sbin/nologin as "shell" I cannot of course gain entry, even from root. On the other hand, for the accounts (mysql, postgres) which have a normal shell, I can 'su' from root without entering a password; while if I try to 'su' from any other user I'm prompted for a password (which of course does not exist). I'm wondering what the full interpretation of the "!!" is. I know about "*" in the encrypted password field: there is no possible password which encrypts fo "*", so such accounts cannot be logged into. I've already found out something (see above) about "!!" accounts, but is there more that I should know? In particular, if I were (as root) to use the 'passwd' command to give a "!!" account a real password, would I be treading on any toes in the system? OK, next Ubuntu graphics question/problem

OK, I now have Ubuntu 7.04 installed and working, network connection up, pretty OK in fact. However it will still only allow me a best resolution of 800x600 even though there are higher resolutions in the xorg.conf file. What else limits the resolution and how do I change it? -- Chris Green

Hi Folks, Now a question of my own ... to people who have been down the road below. I'm running Red Hat 9 on one machine, along with the MySQL-3.23.54a which came on the installation CDs. I want to upgrade the MySQL-3 to MySAL-4+, in order to have the increased functionality (especially sub-queries) which was introduced in version 4. My browsings on the web have not revealed an upgrade route which looks authoritative, though I have seen a few people recommend procedures, though not in detail, and I have not seen confirmations that these have worked. I really do want to avoid breaking things on that machine! MySQL is currently at version 5, but older versions (specifically 4.1.22) are available in various formats (binary and source) at http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/4.1.html If anyone has successfully made this upgrade, I would be most grateful to learn, in detail, how they did it! Standard output redirection caching

Dear All, When standard output is redirected to a file, it gets cached, so that nothing is actually written to the file until (say) 4kB of standard output has built up. I'm sometimes too impatient to wait that long to see the output of my programs, especially when the program in question is a long, slow numerical calculation that might be producing only a few hundred bytes of output per day. Weird blackout on browser!

Hi Folks, I just observed something strange, using Firefox. I wonder if others find the same. 1. Go to http://www.rspb.org.uk/supporting/campaigns/suttonfen/index.asp and get a nice page. 2. Now scroll down and find "Find out more", and click on A wonderful site for future generations to enjoy I get a complete blackout! 3. Now click the "Back" button to return to the previous page. Again, this is completely blank. Check that the URL in the location window is the same as you originally entered at (1). 4. Clear the URL, and re-enter the URL from (1). Again completely black! 5. Open something else, e.g. http://news.bbc.co.uk/ and normal service is resumed. Now clear the URL again and enter the URTL from (1). It's still black! But if you clear the cache and re-enter, it's OK again. The only explanation I can think of is that the cache of the page at (2) is considered to be the cache for the URL at (1), even though (2) is not at the same URL as (1), being http://www.rspb.org.uk/supporting/campaigns/suttonfen/wonderful.asp What's interesting is that if I do it the other way round: 6. Clear history, cookies and cache, close down broswer, restart browser, and enter this last URL above, I then get a parfectly good page. But now find the "> Sutton Fen Appeal > ..." at the top, click on that, and you get a black page again. This of course should take you to where you were at (1) in the first place, since it is the same URL (as seen in the URL box). So it's the same effect: the transition (by any means) from either page to the other makes everything black! I'm a bit puzzled by all this. Any ideas? Calendar/diary - I've found a usable solution

I seem to have found a solution to my calendar diary requirement. I've been looking for a simpler wiki (than TWiki) for personal use and after a fair amont of hunting around and wasting time trying things out I decided on MoinMoin. It's widely used (and I almost tried it myself once before) and it supports reStructured text as one of its markup languages so fulfilled quite a few of my wiki 'wants'. It turns out that MoinMoin has a ready made 'out of the box' macro that generates a calendar with clickable days that take you to the page for the day which (as with any wiki) you can create if it doesn't exist already. That's a large chunk of what I want, if I can link some sort of appointments utlity to the pages I create then so much the better but that will be a bonus. -- Chris Green

Hello all, It works! Having found a 'how I got Ubuntu to work on my HP 510' article (http://arewold.wordpress.com/2007/05/26/installing-ubuntu-704-on-a-hp-510-l…) I followed instructions to make a small change to the kernel (forcing the outcome of a check that was presumably going wrong, I think). My custom kernel boots it with the touchpad working as hoped. dmesg now includes: input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as /class/input/input3 Thanks for all your help, Matthew

The only line that mentions 'serio' is the one that loads the keyboard controller, and doesn't look relevant. Calendar/PIM application that allows links

I think the PIM that would have - or might have - met Chris' requirement reasonably well isn't available any more. It was the old Claris Organiser for OS9 and earlier. Years ago now. You had a calendar with appointments, notes, contacts, one or two other things. Then any one element of these could be linked to any others in some simple way. So you had a sort of ad hoc grouping of (say) a person's contact details, every appointment you had with them, every note of every phone conversation, and maybe the text of all correspondence. You got to each element of the set by clidking a link. And you could have as many of these bundles as you wanted. In addition there were the usual categories. So Chris could have had journal entries associated with agenda items, or anything else. Snippets of code associated with a project. Reading lists from people at a given class. Anything at all could be made into a set and once you hit one, the others became available, but if you also wanted to look at items by category, you could do that too. Later on it was sold to Palm and marketed in two forms, the Windows form of Palm organiser not having any of this linking functionality, but the Mac version kept on with it. It was amazing. I kept looking for something like this too, and hoped maybe Chandler might turn into it, but alas... It may have been a functionality that was too obscure for most people to bother with, but once you got used to it, it was very powerful. Al

Calendar/PIM application that allows links

I'm still searching for a calendar/PIM application that suits my needs (or at least vaguely approximates to them). I want a very simple application that allows me to enter reminders etc. so I can remember appointments etc. I don't want the complexity that most seem to offer but what I *do* want to do is be able to add links of some sort to appointments that can point to what are effectively diary entries. It can be web/HTML or just desktop, I'm not too fussed. I.e. I want a simple appointments diary with a way of linking it to the entries in a journal/diary. It strikes me that this is a very obvious sort of thing to want but I can't find anything that seems to do it. I have installed and tried plan by the way, it seems very 'clunky' to me. It is quite flexible though, e.g. it's one of the very few such applications which lets you actually see a view of today plus the next few days rather than a week that starts on a fixed day or a month. The 'execute' doesn't do what I need either, it runs a program when the appointment is due (or at a time before). What I needed was a way to run a program (to add a dairy entry) when you click on a date, I've found a fairly crude way of doing this using Xdialog. -- Chris Green

Hi Richard, Am I trying to work with sqlite through a gui? Not quite. It was probably less than clear. I have the database all set up. I also have an sqlite ODBC driver installed - the one that comes in the Etch repositories. The programming language doesn't do sqlite natively, it only does ODBC. Yes, probably I should get another language one of these days.... However, all that is OK - I can manage the language, and I can manage to use the ODBC commands and functions it has built in, but to make it talk to the database, I need a DSN apparently. From synaptic, I installed the sqlite ODBC driver, and on checking, it really does seem to be there in /usr/lib. This is where the problems start though. I can't make a DSN for the database, because I can't see how to add the driver using iodbcadmin-gtk. In the gui, it simply doesn't see it even if pointed at it, and it crashes out with the error when you try. So I can't address the database from the language using the ODBC functions, with no DSN. I was attracted to doing this step with the gtk interface that comes with iODBC, because there seemed to be a lot of things to go wrong if you edit it by hand. And I'm very puzzled about why having installed a couple of ODBC database drivers, it cannot see them. Maybe the answer is give up on iODBC and edit the configuration file by hand, and then if that doesn't work, another option is to go out to the shell. Apparently with sqlite you can go out to shell, call it, and then pass a command to it, and that can be a script. This will have to do if I can't get ODBC to work. Hi guys, What am I doing wrong? This is on Etch. First I got sqlitebrowser, created a new sqlite database, then imported my data into it as csv. Seems fine - at least, it can be browsed using sqlitebrowser. Second, apt-get install iodbc and the sqlite odbc libraries. The mysql ones for good measure. Verify they are there. Fire up iodbcadm-gtk and try to set the DSN of my database. It want to know which driver to use, and it cannot see either the sqlite ones or the mysql ones. So I suppose its first necessary to add one. When I point to what seem like reasonable candidates in /usr/lib/odbc, it rejects them because an error occurred when trying to add the driver, invalid keyword pairs. Googling suggests an authorization error, but the same thing happens with the root account. It seems like you have to define a driver before you can do a DSN, however I can't figure out how to define a driver. Any suggestions gratefully received. After this, assuming we ever get over it, comes the fun part of talking to the thing from my programming language. All keeps the blood flowing in the brain! Peter

Missing touchpad

Hi all, I bought a new laptop the other day - an HP 510 - and put Debian Etch on it, and it doesn't find the touchpad. I don't think it's a hardware problem, since it worked fine under the manufacturer's installation of Windows XP and when booted from the recovery disk. I've also tried live CDs for SLAX and Ubuntu, which behave the same way as Etch. The research I've done hasn't turned up anyone with the same problem on the same machine, but a few people have fixed apparently similar problems by fiddling with udev; something that hasn't got me far yet. The problem seems to occur mainly with recent kernels, often appearing after a kernel upgrade. My 'uname -r' is 2.6.18-4-686. /var/log/Xorg.0.log includes: (II) Synaptics touchpad driver version 0.14.6 (1406) Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics event device found (checked 13 nodes) (**) Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" (**) Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0" Query no Synaptics: 6003C8 (EE) Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics touchpad detected and no repeater device (EE) Synaptics Touchpad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware. (EE) PreInit failed for input device "Synaptics Touchpad" (II) UnloadModule: "synaptics" /etc/X11/xorg.conf includes: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad" Driver "synaptics" Option "SendCoreEvents" "true" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "Protocol" "auto-dev" Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0" EndSection That was generated from the debconf DB, so clearly something thinks the device is meant to be there. Strangely, 'modprobe synaptics' returns: FATAL: Module synaptics not found. The touchpad isn't in /proc/bus/input/devices and it doesn't generate any output if I cat the nodes in /dev/input (nor the useful-looking ones in /dev, especially /dev/psaux as mentioned in xorg.conf). It isn't mentioned in syslog even with udev set to debug messages. I don't really know enough about the device to set udev rules or use mknod; I'm not even sure which bus it's on. ISA NIC card puzzle

Hi Folks, I'm puzzled! Can someone give me a hint? I've had an (ancient) NE2000 clone which plugs into an ISA (not PCI) slot running happily on a very old machine (ca 1995) for years. On SuSe 5.2 I had it set up to use module ne.o, with options "io=0x300". Now that machine's PSU has failed, so I moved the hard drives etc. to another box (of more recent vintage ... ). Now it fails to find the card and/or any IRQ line when given 0x300. I've removed all other ISA cards from that box to make sure there are no conflicts. I've tried this not only with the "native "SuSE-5.2 off the hard drive, but also booting with tomsrtbt ("Linux on a Floppy" and with Ubuntu live CDs, in all cases without success. I'm puzzled that it works one the one box but (with the same system and settings) fails on another. Is there a possibility that ISA IO addresses and IRQs can change between different motherboards? How to get files out of an rpm package?

I want to extract some files from an rpm package but I don't have an rpm database on my slackware box so I can't just do "rpm -i <name>". As far as I know the package only has three files in it, a python script and some documentation. I just want those files. How can I get them? I've searched around using Google and this particular program seems only to exist as an rpm. -- Chris Green

Journal/diary program for 'local' use

I'm sure I found something like this a while ago but now all I can find is blogs. I'm after something that's half way between an appointments calendar (or even a PIM) and a diary/journal. I.e. I want a program that allows me to remind myself about things but also allows me to wax lyrical about my doings for the day. Ideally it will allow me to write using my choice of text editor but that's not absolutely essential, it certainly doesn't *have* to have a GUI interface but on the other hand I don't mind if it does. Being able to view the calendar/diary from the web would be a plus but isn't really important. Any suggestions anyone? -- Chris Green

Mark, if I remember correctly you use the phone co-op as your ISP. It looks to me to be the one to go for, if I can get it outside Inverness, they do already have broadband at the new house having been on the receiving end of numerous ISP's who have gone bad. Hi Folks, I'm writing to ask for reactions to an item in today's Daily Telegraph "Digital Life" (in the "Review" section). This week, they're testing "Mini-PCs", and I quote their review of the Apple Mac Mini ("From £399"): "Apple's Mac Mini is the tiniest 'small form factor' computer in this group. It is 6.5in square, 2in high, and has a gorgeous brushed-metal finish below the iconic Apple-white lid. Unfortunately, it's also the perfect case of style over substance. The 1.66GHz version is certainly cheap, but it's also very slow. Even the faster model uses only a 1.83GHz Core Duo processor (not the nippier Core 2 Duo) and has just 512 MB of RAM. You will also have to supply the keyboard, mouse and monitor. We'd recommend the Mac for undemanding word processing, surfing the web, or impressing your friends. For amything more intensive, steer clear." Ehh?? "very slow"?? What *do* people use computers for these days. then? For years I've been doing word-processing (including "demanding") and web-surfing on A: 75MHz CPU + 64MB RAM B: 366MHz CPU + 128MB RAM C: 733MHz CPU + 512MB RAM (which at the same time happily runs Win98 in VMWare) (etc). and I've done a lot of quite intensive computational work too (dunno about impressing my friends, though ... ); and I've never had a machine more beefy than (C). I can see that the Apple Mac Mini could be inadequate for computing predictions of climate change, or similar; but what the hell can it be that enough of Joe Public want to do with a computer that it wouldn't be up to? Blogs and Wikis and things like that

I am trying to work out what a blog might do for me. I have a wiki running on my home Linux box alread (TWiki) and I find it useful for some things, I tend to use it as a CM tool rather than a wiki really as I am about the only contributor! :-) Still it allows me to give other members of the family some space to play in and it allows me to add to and create web pages when I'm away from home. Now I have a need for a diary type tool of some sort and, fairly obviously, blogs come to mind. However having played with a couple I'm still a bit confused as to what they actually offer. Apart from the ability to edit a web page and add stuff on a sequential basis is there anything special that a blog does that a wiki doesn't? Or, more particularly, are there any things that a blog makes easy that are more difficult with other tools? -- Chris Green

UPS again

Having a wife and daughter resident at home who are both becoming increasingly 'Green', today they presented me with an 'intelligent' six gang surge protected distribution thingy from 'Lakeland' to plug in to my UPS. This switches everything else plugged into the five subordinate sockets once the computer, (plugged into the first socket) has been powered down. At the moment I have my Netgear ADSL router plugged into this thingy, is that OK? Will my router survive being turned on and off when the computer and monitor is? Will it retain its settings, as I can cheat and just not power down my computer, although I might get caught if they spot all the pretty lights on at night! or I can plug the router directly into the UPS. -- J.R. Hi Folks, I'd welcome comment on the following situation, which has arisen since I've (temporarily) changed my home network topology. Previously (machines designated as A, B, C): ADSL---Modem | Hub_1----------------A [at which I sit] | 5 metres | 10 metres| | | 1 metre Hub_2----------B | +------------C 1 metre The above has worked very smoothly. Now, in order to have machine to hand while investigating a hardware (power switch) issue, I have brought it near to machine A, with the resulting topology: ADSL---Modem | Hub_1----------------A [at which I sit] | | 5 metres | +-----------------C | 10 metres| | | | 1 metre Hub_2----------B Now, when I am sitting at A and running certain X apps on C (which have relatively heavy throughput such as raster re-drawing of sections of screen), there is clearly congestion: output from C on A's screen can hangs for a few seconds at quite frequent intervals. But it can also happen from time to time when I'm simmply typing text into C (as now). Not much has changed: the cable to C has been plugged into a different hub, with a different cable (5m instead of 1m). Comments would be welcome! I don't think such a change should have much effect. sensors modules problems

I changed my machine's innards some months ago which included an Asus P5W DH DeLuxe mainboard (64-bit board running 32-bit Debian Testing with kernel 2.6.20.1). Searching on the internet revealed that, apparently, the sensors driver to use for that board was w83627ehf but when trying to load I got the message "No such device". Next step was to run sensors-detect which gave me a list of modules: i2c-i801 i2c-isa eeprom lm78 That worked but gave me only one temperature and one fan. The temperature reading was 33 C which corresponed with the CPU temperature in the BIOS and the fan reading matched the BIOS reading. These readings were stable for some months. There was no reading available for the mainboard for which the BIOS gave a temperature of 38 C. I normally don't reboot or turn this machine off but just recently I did reboot and noticed that the temperature reading displayed was now the same as the mainboard temperature i.e. 38 C. Rebooting and going back into the BIOS showed that the two temperature readings were much the same as they had been for months so the temperature now displayed appeared to be that of the mainboard and not the CPU as it was before. So I'm baffled. Why the sudden change? Is there a module available that will give me both temperatures? I have also found recently that removing i2c-i801 appears to have no effect. I use gkrellm to display temperatures and trying 'sensors' produces the message: Can't access procfs/sysfs file Unable to find i2c bus information; For 2.6 kernels, make sure you have mounted sysfs and libsensors was compiled with sysfs support! For older kernels, make sure you have done 'modprobe i2c-proc'! sysfs is mounted but I don't know if Debian's libsensors2 is compiled with sysfs support. Hi Bit off topic for lists but, this morning I noticed my line was slow, according to Plusnet speed check I am getting 125kbs, and for the last year I have been getting 990kbs. Yet they insist there is nothing wrong. Can anybody suggest anything (else) to check my end before I loose my temper with them? I've also checked less /var/log/cups/error_log and ls and have not come up with anything especially useful. It just says there's a back channel and input output error (can't find much in google) and that ls is not a pipe. Help. Is it my imagination, or do older slower machines with little memory run a lot faster when using wdm or xdm than when running gdm or kdm? Its irritating, because what is really nice about gdm is the ease of remote terminal setup and auto start of apps....

Yes, I am comparing display managers. or trying to, but wrote carelessly. When I went from gdm to wdm, it wasn't auto start that vanished, that stayed and I miswrote, but what went was the ability to shutdown as a user from the control panel icon. I was very surprised too. When I tried to put the shutdown control back into the panel, all it offered was logout. Whereas with gdm, it offers you that screen where you choose between logout and shutdown. Then when I logged out and got to the wdm login screen, shutdown turned out not to work unless you first logged on as root. So I was stuck with putting in sudo and a new custom little panel thing. I couldn't see why changing the display manager should have done this, but what do I know? Then what I meant by remote terminal is that in gdm you have those very convenient screens for setting up xdmcp. Well probably you guys never use this, but over a home network its very easy and simple, and gdm lets you set it up very easily. Sorry, autostart is of course in the window manager. But, anyway is there a reason why wdm should seem faster? It seems without measuring anything and to an admittedly untrained eye, as if its a lot faster. Is this generally accepted, or am I imagining things? Peter

I've decided it's about time I got back into playing with MIDI so I've been trying to work out the best way to get things working and I've come up with two options: 1) Does anyone have a spare PCI sound card with joystick port that they'd be willing to part with? I've put in three of the sliver 4 port router+modem boxes. They've been perfect, run cool, work fine for a year or two, easy to manage, very simple interface. On another account I put in a half price lookalike from ebuyer to save a few pennies. It works fine but I had to set up DNS manually on each computer, and never could figure out why. I'd be very confident about netgear again. Peter

Hi Folks, I'd welcome comment from experienced folk on the following. I'm helping a friend sort out various computer-related problems. One aspect concerns their (NTL/Virgin) cable-DSL Internet connection. What I'm thinking of is getting one of those WAN/LAN boxes that combines a router port (to be cabled to their DSL cable modem) with a 4-port LAN switch. Browsing round the local (to me) dealers, the best option I've found readily available is the Netgear RP614 Broadband Router + 4 port 10/100 Switch. Platinum Range. RP614 (£25 from WoC). In theory this should do the job. But I have some reservations in that my one & only experience with a Netgear switch ended with it burning out rather soon. So I'm a bit wary of Netgear kit! But others may know different. The only non-Netgear alternative seems to be a "BELKIN F5D5231UK4 10/100 4-PORT CABLE/DSL GATEWAY ROUTER" which looks as though it does the same job, at £34 (web price) from PC World (£50 in-store price), so the above Netgear would be much cheaper. Other options available at PC World are upwards of £50, and are all Netgear. Comments welcome! apache upgrade has broken server

Hello there, I've just upgraded our debian server from sarge to etch. Apache is now running at version 1.3.34-4.1. It keeps crashing. When sent a sighup it won't restart. The error log shows [crit] (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to port 80 netstat -t -l -n -p | grep 80 then shows only xinetd is listening on port 80. The only way I can persuade apache to start is to comment out the 'Include hosts.conf' line in httpd.conf, start the server, allow the hosts.conf to be included once again, and restart. It then runs fine until the next time. I'm very much feeling my way with this upgrade, as the server is unfamiliar to me, and I'm not much cop at ports and virtual hosts and whatnot, but my new job means I'm supposed to keep apache running on this server running at all times. Any pointers as to what the problem could be would be very welcome. Thanks, Jenny

Wierd DNS (sort of) error only in browsers

I have a wierd problem when running browsers on my Slackware machine at home, well it's more of a nuisance than a serious problem. If I go to a non-existent 'root' address, whether using Firefox or Lynx (or presumably other browsers) I always get the gradwell.net hosting message as follows:- gaa.goo.no hosted by gradwell dot com Ltd Sorry! The site you were looking for has not yet been configured by the owner of this site. If you are the site owner, please use our control panel to configure your site's virtual host. Please see this www.gradwell.com/support/virtual-hosts support article for information on how to configure your virtual host. Please remember to input all entries into the control panel in lower case. If you find that http://www.gaa.goo.no/ works, but http://gaa.goo.no/ does not, then please remember that you must create an additional website rule to enable the other virtual host. Keyboard not working after 'successful' installation

I just installed Slackware 11 on an old[ish] PC and it all went totally smoothly with no problems at all. However when I boot the installation it does all the right things and presents me with a login: prompt but at that point the keyboard doesn't work so I'm a bit stumped. The keyboard works at the boot: prompt but it would seem that I've somehow got the wrong drivers in the installed system. Any ideas on how to fix this? One thing that it *might* be is that it's an old style keyboard with the large DIN plug, maybe this needs a different driver from the default, can I get somewhere from the boot: prompt to fix this? -- Chris Green

Page 8: PC Software News Free PC Unixes available Owen Leblanc There are now two free Unix operating systems available for PC's: Linux and 386BSD. Linux is the more mature system, now available in its fifth public test version, 0.95a. The system requires a 386 or above, with or without a co- processor, with a minimum of 2 Mbytes of memory, and with at least 4 Mbytes recommended. The source for the operating system requires about 0.5 Mbytes, and binaries currently available (about 250 commands) require 8 to 10 additional Mbyutes, although, of course, you may delete unwanted bits, or add further programs. With swap space, this means a minimum of about 20 Mbytes of hard disk space. [...] You must have a 1.2 or 1.3 Mbyte floppy drive for installation. [...] Both are unspupported software, though we expect some interest in these and other free Unix systems which should be available in the near future. Well, I was round at MCC shortly after that, and returned with a bundle of floppies (thanks to Owen's help with the downloading). I then re-structured the 40MB hard drive on my 4MB-RAM PC, giving 20MB to Linux, 5MB to swap, and conceding the remaining 15MB to DOS. Then I was flying! Not sure. I don't understand most of it. :¬( However, I've reinstalled it using a named (recommended) driver and it seems to recognise it a bit more but I get tray 2 load letter messages. Tray 2 looks absolutely fine (not broken or anything - I've googled this one and had another look through Ubuntu community docs.) Anyone else come across this? Hp laser printer

I'm having installation trouble. I thought I'd managed it a while ago but my HP Laserjet5M didn't print. I've googled and found the Ubuntu community docs page which says you should remove lp from /etc/modules so I've done that (and the other things it advises) but typing in hp-toolbox it says no HP device is installed even though the installation program says it is and lpinfo -v gave it (rather a long way down) as an option. Any ideas people? Have I missed something obvious? Why Linux? To start with it isn't MS which is a mighty plus point. It's free (no bolstering the coffers of a certain Redmond company) and the security is far better since people (many of them) look for bugs and problems. I use Ubuntu (have done since Badger was released) and while some things are a bit puzzling, it's no harder than any other OS so the idea that Linux is only for serious techofiles is all wrong. I'm picking up bits and pieces about it but I'm still at the stage where most stuff needs spelling out patiently. Which means I hope I don't drive you all nuts asking lots of questions. Screen failure -- costly power surge [OT]

Hi Folks, Well, only sort-of off-topic, since here in Anglia we know about power surges and discuss them. We've had kit damaged, etc. But Yarmouth, I think, holds the record. According to yesterday's Eastern Daily Press http://tinyurl.com/2u96pk Yarmouth have spent £900,000 on three big screens around the town "with the aim of promoting events and attractions in the resort." One of them (£200,000) in the Market Place has been out of action for 6 months having been damaged by a power surge. Efforts to repair it, "including nine power supply units costing £435 each", have not availed. No doubt, whoever supplied and installed it wasn't properly aware of the problem. Perhaps they should read this list. (But then, they probably don't use Linux anyway). It's USB. Definately switched on (one of the first things I checked) The dialogue box has never showed the print job as paused. Cups? Epson C48 printer

I got a (new) replacement printer a while ago when the first Epson packed up and I have not managed to get it to print yet. I can see the print job in the dialogue box and everything else seems OK but absolutely nothing happens when I ask it to print. No noises, nothing. I have hunted round various forums for an answer to this and have yet to get very far. I frequently need to remove empty directories (and files). Poorly written scripts (my own) make them at times. For me this does the job nicely. find . -empty | xargs rmdir Cheers Govind Chandra

Grub dual boot issues

Hi, I have an old PC here at work with 2 disks. Not wanting to nuke my windows data disks I've partitioned the second disk and installed Ubuntu on /hdb6 as / and /hdb7 as /home. Unfortunately when I came to reboot GRUB has failed. Does anybody know a work around/fix to this? I previously had the same problem with Fedora and ended up using Suse and booting via the CD. Now I want to move to Ubuntu because it is better and should support my webcam (I want to use the PC for the access grid). Any help would be appreciated Simon

'rmdir -p', what a strange command

I've been looking for a quick and easy way to remove empty maildir folders, I was going write a short shell script but while I was thinking about this I came across 'rmdir -p'. Thinking that this was sort of equivalent to 'mkdir -p' I tried to use it and it acts very strangely. If you have an empty maildir folder called (for example) mdf then "rmdir -p mdf" simply gives the error "rmdir: mdf: Directory not empty", it doesn't recurse down into the directory and find that the sub-directories are empty and them remove the lot. If you give the command "rmdir -p mdf/*" then it gives the error "rmdir: mdf: Directory not empty" twice but does actually remove the whole maildir folder. What's happening is that it removes each of the 'cur', 'tmp' and 'new' sub-directories of 'mdf' but only when it removes the last one does it also remove the parent directory. I can think of no practical use for this command! :-) It's no good for my requirement because it might remove some of the maildir sub-directories then find the next one wasn't empty and leave a partial maildir folder. I think I'm back to my script for doing it. -- Chris Green

I seem to be about to be made redundant, it's not a disaster as I have been wondering how to wind down to retirement anyway and redundancy means I get paid for leaving. However I don't really want to stop working totally so would be glad of any leads towards either part time work or consultancy/contracts. I'm basically a good C/C++/Java developer with particular skills in the comms/networking area. I'm also fairly capable of most admin. stuff on Solaris/Unix/Linux, shell scripting, setting up mail, all that sort of stuff. Flexible as regards hours, pay, place of work (but basically in East Anglia please). -- Chris Green

I currently have a router supplying Pipex broadband (always on) to my computer. This was set up for me. when I move I am going to have to set it up again, on my own, on a different 'phone number, with a different ISP, at the moment I am using the gateway address XXX.XX.X.XX, (is it wise to publish one's gateway address?) Wiki: IRCUsers & Who's Where? pages

Hi, Two wiki pages listing ALUG members have evolved - one is a general list of people, whilst the latter is a small list of IRC nicknames -> real names. I think it makes more sense to just add the latter as a column to the former ... anyone any objections? Relatedly, there's a big dump of people at the bottom of the Who's Where? page which has been cut and pasted from the old site. Do we want to keep this or would it be better to expect active users to re-add themselves? I could re-format the entries to the new table, but some seem pretty old ... Anyone want to put their 2p's worth in? Peter.

Went into terminal and tried suggestion and as many options I could figure - nothing, just got messages like 'invalid device requested' 'selected disk doesn't exist' 'error while parsing number' Does Terminal = Bash shell? or do I have to be somewhere else for the grub console - if so where please. I havn't been able to access this. It was suggested that I get access to the rescue mode from the Ubuntu media, and by typing 'linux rescue'. Trouble is I don't know where this Ubuntu media is. If I run the live cd while in windows I just get options to evaluate various applications, and if I boot up with the live cd it goes straight to install - no prompts to type at. Further help most appreciated. Software to add information to a map

I've only just thought of this idea but being able to do such a thing on a computer would be really, really useful (to me anyway!). What sort of software would be good at drawing routes and adding location information to a scanned map? I guess the gimp could do it but are there any applications more specifically for this sort of thing? Ideally the additions would be in their own layers so one could look at only the 'nice bridleways' or the 'good horse accomodation' additions. It would also be nice to be able to add notes to marked locations. -- Chris Green

Hello ALUG, I'm having a bit of a Poor Work Day today so I've written a macro for the ALUG Wiki which inserts the date of the next social meeting. Use it like this: [[NextMeeting(location[,show_venue])]] where location is either "norwich" or "ipswich" and show_venue is either "yes" or "no" (defaults to "no"). The parameters can be expressed in the keyword style: [[NextMeeting(ipswich,show_venue=yes)]] Right, I really should do some proper work. I must be doing something wrong. I booted from the live cd and worked thru "install" to "partition", checked "manual" partition, got to desktop, opened terminal, entered "grub-install /dev/hda" and got "cannot create directory /boot/grub :permission denied". Do you have any further thoughts/advice please. Laptop/UPS

Thanks to all who gave an opinion or advice on the above matter. I now have an UPS sitting between the mains and my computer. At £110·00, an awful lot cheaper than a laptop, and now I've found the right wires to go in the right sockets, its siting there with its green light on, no installation problems, hardware not liking software, or any other problems that setting up a new computer would have. -- J.R. Help! X connections being refused

Hi Folks (and sorry for anu cross postings) Following a mysterious mishap when something on a website crashed my Firefox. the machine I was using is now not accepting X connections from either of my other two machines. I can't get to the bottom of it, and would welcome any suggestions. The basic symptom is: >From machine A (compo, the screwed-up one) I log in to either of my other two (say brandy) from an xterm in Gnome. On the remote login, I then issue the command 'xterm' and hope to see an xterm open on compo (as normally happens). Instead, I get the following message from the remote (brandy): ted@brandy:~ > xterm Xlib: connection to "compo.fort.knox.uk:0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified xterm Xt error: Can't open display: compo.fort.knox.uk:0.0 (Exactly the same message from the other remote machine) This situation arose immediately following the Firefox crash (Firefox running on compo, machine A). Connections which were already open continued to work. By now, though, I've tried (amongst other things) rebooting. and now there's no joy on any front. It makes no difference whether I'm root or an ordinary user eiher locally or remotely, nor whether I 'startx' as root or ordinary user/ (BTW, I can give some details of the remote web site which crashed Firefox if people think it may help, since I suspect it of monkey business. but will hold fire for the moment since it may not be relevant). Is there anything else to resize partitions? I use Acronis, have for several years. Its not free (but its cheap), its not open source either, but it will do anything you want with partitions of any sort, and its always worked perfectly. Amazon is the cheapest, or was when I bought the last copy. I wouldn't be without it. Peter

First, I'm about as new as a newbie can get. Second, thanks for your suggestion, but I have done every which way I know to do as you suggest, but no luck. What I've done is to boot with a live cd (and I've used both Ubuntu and Kubuntu original cd's) gone into install, installed as far as partition and chosen "manual", chose not to format, and got to desktop. Opened terminal and 1) typed "grub-install" - and got something about not finding something (I didn't keep notes). 2) tried another way, typed "grub" - got "grub >" and typed " root (hda,7)", (which is where I think my root is) and got similar answer - cannot find ... etc. Perhaps I'm not doing this correctly. I've also tried to locate on my live cd's the rescue option (which everyone is saying is there) - perhaps I'm doing something wrong here to. Any suggestions warmly received, but please in terms of one syllable so that I can follow - and learn. I like linux, I want to use it instead of win98, don't want to pay Bill for anything else, but the early learning curve is a bit steep. Ubuntu/Debian and MySQL

My understanding is that the standard MySQL startup scripts (for use in init.d) have the option of using mysqlmanager instead of mysqld_safe. The packaged versions for Debian (and therefore Ubuntu) do not have that option. Is anyone here running via mysqlmanager on a Debian-based system? How best should I go about it? NB: I have no experience of mysqlmanager but I need multiple mysqld instances and I think that's the way to go? Hi, List admin hadn't been done for a while and I've let through quite a few posts that have an html part attached. Could I remind/ask everyone who does post to the list to try and make sure they try to configure their client to send in plain text only. Or, if that isn't possible could they use a different mail service to send to the list? Sending mail to the list in html creates extra work for the admins and isn't necessary. I will let some posts from new subscribers with an html part through to the list but if you continue to do so you will get a reminder and your post will be deleted and you will have to resend it. If after a couple of reminders you carry on doing it then your mail will eventually just be silently discarded. I'm dual booting win98SE and Ubuntu, and have had a choice menu on bootup of either Ubuntu or windows, Ubuntu being the default. Due to a need of having to re-install win98SE, I have now lost this menu option and thus cannot access linux. How can I get this menu choice back. Thanks elc

Hullo there. I have a computer currently dual-booted with a windows partition and a debian one. I want to use a small amount of disk space to install ubuntu to have a look at it. If I run gparted to try and shrink the current partitions, the resize option is not available. Is this because I didn't use LVM to create the original partitions? Hi, I'm thinking about buying a new switch for my home network. I have three in mind (yes I know they're overkill but I like toys!) Netgear GS716T D-link DGS-1216T Linksys SRW2016 Has anybody used any of these, and got and good/bad experiences?
