Missing hdd

Another poser for the smart ones out there. :-) When I boot from a floppy I can see all my drives but booting from the /boot partition one of my IDE channels is invisible. The bios sees it but Linux does not. It isn't reported in the boot message that flashes past at break neck speed! I presume this is a kernel thing but the kernel image on the floppy should be the same as the image at /boot. They were both created when I installed, I haven't been fiddling, honest guv! Cheers, BJ

ALUG put back

Heh, typical. When I return to my office having just put the meeting back a week because no-one had objected, I didn't think there was sufficient time to publicise it, let alone organise it properly, then I find that some people have preferred to keep it this weekend. DOH! Well, sorry to those few, but it was remarkably quiet before that, so ALUG 13 is on Sunday 23rd July at 1400 in Union House at UEA. A full announcement will follow just as soon as Martyn can confirm the speaker and any facilities needed to me. Hopefully some posters will be made as soon as possible and people can help put them around local computer shops and community notice boards. MJR, again picking up the torch for an ALUG meet

Has it been restarted since the messages file was zero'd? > Also, how do I force an archive and compression of a log file? Use a log rotate script. There are several out there, including standard ones on many distributions.

Log files (/var/log/messages)

Folks, I just logged onto our firewall box for my periodic peruse, and I noticed that the /var/log/messages file, created on 28 Jun is 0 bytes long. All the permissions, ownership and so on seem to be ok, and it certainly used to log stuff. Any ideas as to why it should stop logging? I'm a bit concerned about this... -rw-r----- 1 root root 0 Jun 28 00:00 messages Also, how do I force an archive and compression of a log file? Cheers, Laurie.

X newsreader

What's a good basic X news client? KRN is pretty basic Netscape is well Netscape really... It must support multiple nntp servers though! Don't really want to use a console but I will if I have to. Opinions please. BTW its nice to be using Linux for just about everything now. I might even ditch MS soon and just leave it on the kid's box. Cheers, BJ
