networking probs

Hullo All, I'm trying to connect my debian box to our windows network (amidst many scowls from the network administrator who doesn't trust all this here linux stuff.) ("Who on earth uses linux?, I mean all that basic command line stuff, it's like going back to DOS...."). We have a few subnetworks connected to router boxes, I am trying only to connect to the immediate subnetwork my work winbox is on, address which is 192.168.11.0. (to start with anyway, heh heh!) I have linux box pinging itself on loopback and 192.168.11.106 (its assigned network IP), also by name (TRX850) but not any of the machines on the network. ifconfig also shows network card to be present and correct. I have netstat -rn showing 192.168.11.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U dummy0 0.0.0.0 192.168.11.100 UG dummy0 (router box IP for this network) /etc/hosts has had all IP addresses and names on the local network edited in, e.g 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.11.106 TRX850/TCL TRX850 192.168.11.102 jenny/TCL jenny /etc/resolv.conf I have left empty /etc/networks has localnet 192.168.11.0 TCL 192.168.11.0 /etc/hosts.conf has order hosts, bind multi on. This is a pretty basic question, I know, and I ought to know this stuff by now, but can anyone look at what I've done and go ...."ahhh, you silly thing, you've....."???? Thanks! LinuxDay distributions

I see from David's draft website, the question of distribution has arisen again. In an attempt to avoid the normal discussion being repeated, I'll just point out that we have a large quantity of Mandrake CDs available, Debian is common on campus and there will be a mirror available, but I think having a distribution which installs inside a DOS or Windows partition could be useful. Any suggestions as to which? Peanut? Time to get reading the Mandrake and Debian installation guides... Can we have the "we need this" list from my earlier email on the page too? Thanks, MJR

Well, if you want to show versatility, there's the offer of a set-top box which uses Linux as a demonstration. Do you want me to try to arrange for it to be at UEA? Are you on the LinuxDay mailing list? If not, I can try to find the instructions for it. WRT website, we have 10Mbps to the Hive, the disclaimer forms are on the linuxday.org.uk site and I'd rather not have my address posted in the clear for the spam spiders to pick up, please (especially not in my current state). Well, there's three of us sort-of updating the website, but anyone wanting to be a "website czar" is quite welcome to help and I'll answer questions about the setup of it until the cows come home. Similarly, if a "LinuxDay czar" wants to appoint themselves, I'm sure the veterans will rally round even though we're a bit pushed for time. That said, I'm a bit stuck with doing anything for a few days because of a trip and the death of my computer. I think I've now got email working well enough to read new messages and send emails, but I can't get access to emails from before Tuesday until it's back. Sorry to everyone that affects. This message should tell for sure whether this email works again, I guess. If anyone ever wants a Berkeley-mail-like interface to POP emails (and why would you?), just ask me. MJR

Damnit, I'd better start reading up on IRC quickly, then. I was thinking that if I knew how I would put up a page on the website that is cleverly linked to a simple table, so it can be updated, and folks visit the site over the next few days, update the tables with if they are coming and what they are bringing, and Bob's yr uncle. I'm probably unlikely to learn how to do this in the next few days though, although i enthusiastically printed the few pages of html tags david pointed me to. That's a bit like sending away for a clutch cable thinking I will be able to build a Ducati probably. Jen

Perhaps the person who is in charge of the web pages could construct a list of who is going, what they are bringing, what job they are doing, then at the bottom have a list of what we still need doing or bringing? List can be updated by said person as members mail him/her saying what they can bring/do? I would be willing if i had the first clue about websites, but this is on my list of "things to learn about". Who does the web pages again? (sorry about the suggestion! If they send me a quick tutorial I will co-ordinate, though).

Hi Chris You are currently using tesco.net I see - When you originally signed up, you should have had a confirmation email with all the login details. I had one, but the only thing missing was the phone number. Put the info into the various fields in wvdial setup, and set the mail server identities in your chosen mail reader, and you're away.
