Network Woes!

OK, Here's another one for you experts out there. We've got a 24 port hub/switch in telehouse which is connected to a router. We've got several machines connected up and they are running great. No problems. Excellent connectivity. One of our guys goes down to London yesterday and swops a network card in one of the boxes and installs a fresh new RedHat box in the cabinet for us to play with. Things start to go weird.. The box with the new network card in it and the totally new box can see all the other machines on the subnet and they can see each other. Fine up to now. So.. I try to telnet into these boxes from home (NTL dialup modem) and can't access them. I can access all the other machines on that subnet no problem but not those two machines. In addition, those two machines can't see the router that's attached to the hub. I'm running no clever firewalling or anything on any of those machines. My thoughts are that the switch is misbehaving and is about to smoke or that the router is selectively ignoring certain addresses... Any other thoughts on this? Cheers. Mark W.

Yep, I made the 3c509 file, ran the update modules, and sure as eggs it has picked it up. However, somewhere the card is still bound to ne.....not in aliases, not in modules.conf.....so when I try to bring up eth0 it is telling me "ne.c: No NE*000 card found at i/o=0x2a0 eth0: unknown interface: No such device"........anyone have any idea? Hi All, I've swapped my DLink net card for a 3com509B to see if I can get better results. I've got as far as loading the necessary 3c509 driver and associating it with eth0, rather than the previous ne driver. However, being unfamiliar with Debian I am not sure as to how to go about changing the modules.conf......in /etc/modutils I have a directory called ne, and in this I edited the address and alias eth0 lines to suit, then ran update-modules. So does it make sense to create a directory called 3c509 and put the same info in it and run update-modules? How does update-modules know that it now edits in from the new 3c509 file rather than the ne file, if so? I'm in a "groan, this is all too hard" mood today. Thanks, Jenny.

Weird FTP Problem - any ideas guys??

Well, here I am de-lurking at last! Have got a really infuriating problem with no clues on how to solve it. Have got two Redhat machines, one is 6.2, the other is 7.0. They are on the same network with a 100 meg hub between them. They both have 100meg network cards. I'm trying to ftp a 70meg file from the 6.2 box to the 7.0 box. I would expect the the transfer to take a matter of seconds but it takes an eternity and seems to get slower and slower as it progresses we're talking transfer rates of < 1K here. I'm totally stumped as to what is causing this and need some kind of tool to analyse the problem and work out what is going wrong here. Any ideas about this please? Cheers. >Like the poster Jen....!t Um, on following the URL for the poster I see the text hasn't been edited in the middle section yet, - think we need to put in the where's, when's and wherefore's before we print and distribute? A time would be pretty essential. David, did you get anyone to print any yet? I have a colour printer at home, but from experience of printing band posters it is a costly project. Lake District a bit grim at the moment.
