Hi all, following yesterday's post about an APC UPS I have now installed apcupsd and checked the apcuspd.conf. I'm stuck on the message "PANIC! Cannot talk to UPS" then "destory_Semaphore: can not destroy sem" (the "destory" is correctly typed here) when i start the daemon. Am I missing a driver? Could i have the wrong lead?(it is a 940 0095a-c, I trawled about and it seemed that one would be ok). All I want is for it to do an orderly shutdown in the eventuality of an extended powercut (such as we had the night before last). Jenny.

Hi Guys, I know this can be done, but I can't find it in the docs. I want an e-mail send to a particular account to run a batch file that will send the results back to another account. Any ideas or pointers please ?? Simon

Debian CDs

I hope to have real silver copies of some official Debian CDs at Sunday's meeting, if they get here in time. They'll be 2.2r3, but there isn't *too* much difference from r4, so it should be a relative quick update (definitely less than an hour at modem speed). Suggested donation amount and numbers are as yet unconfirmed, but it would be a great way to support the Debian project with some much-needed funds. http://www.uk.debian.org/ -- MJR

PPPD Problems

Hi all, I'm running Debian Potato with an Intel Ham Modem. Using either pon/poff or wvdial I seem to get the same problem after dialling. The modem connects and makes plenty of noise. with wvdial : After connection I get : 'Looks like a login prompt sending <username>' then : 'Looks like a password prompt sending <password>' then after a second or 2 'Don't know what to do, starting pppd and hoping for the best' pppd starts but after a few seconds it 'gives up' and terminates. Looking in the log I can see the call to pppd<-->/dev/ham then (I have debugging turned on) after a few lines pppd 'detects loopback' and terminates. It appears that when pppd attaches to the modem it thinks that 'the serial device is looped back'. (if I send 'ATZ'>/dev/ham the modem clicks satisfyingly...) and it is properly set up because sometimes it works!!!! - this is the annoying thing, last night it connected first time and I surfed for half hour, then when I tried a little later (even after reboots) it went back to the previous state. lsmod shows all of the relevant modules loaded, /etc/ppp/<files> all appear to be in order ... stuck! The best thing is that wvdial and pppd must die in a nasty way. ps shows them, killall -TERM doesn't kill them which leaves a kill -9 as the only way to get rid of them. if I rmmod all of the relevant modules then restart the whole process all of the modules are reloaded etc... as should be pon gives the same log output but there is no detail on the screen. poff afterwards gives an error that pppd is not running. Really starting to do my head in - as well as probably costing me a small packet in 5p a shot aborted phone-calls. I Have 2 ISP Accounts - freeserve and uklinux (with a few optional numbers), both of which experience the same problem. Has anyone had anything similar or can you suggest a possible cause .. Are there any weird permissions for the ~/.mozilla/plugin/ directory? (or is it ~/.mozilla/plug-in/ , etc.) Hopefully I'll be able to mkdir the directory and chmod 755 it? Or is there another way I need to do this? (Unfortunately I do not have access to my linux box right now) Thanks for the help! Hi all, There's been some coverage recently [1] about the relative popularity of different distributions and hardware platforms. I just thought it would be kinda interesting before the next meeting (which I should be at) to see who uses what?
