Kudos to Jo and Paul for getting this to me. Anyone able to fill in the first bit? Topics discussed include: security, the last meeting, my absence and my photo :P For what it's worth, the wvdial problem is from when they have a terminal server backdoor login on their main dialup line because it's so unstable, but wvdial looks at that and thinks "oh, it's a terminal-style login". I've seen it before on another ISP. Chris, thanks. I'll have a look at the win98 tonight, see what the password thing is defaulted to and try and change it. I think linux machine is mounting its own export....I made a test config file, entered the command smbclient -U% -L localhost and Samba showed my test file. (The O'Reilly book assures me this means it is working). Jen

How was the biscuit supply? :-) Sorry not to have made it. I did almost get Samba going last night though. In linux, the test smb.conf I did works fine, but windows says the network is unavailable when I have a look in Network Neighbourhood. Telnet, ping are fine so it isn't the networking. I suspect it may be the netbios name in linux? I get an error on boot in linux to do with setting the hostname, although it goes on to name the computer "mossey". Did many folk show up? Jenny. |You have two routes to go from there that I can see. One, which will |probably get you polished documents with less hacking for now is |LaTeX. The other is some sort of XML markup and formatting tools, but |they're Not All There Yet. (anonymous coward ALUG reader getting to grips) I've running a loopback host configuration of Cocoon (apache.org/XML) for testing purposes, we're about to try installing it on UEA Music servers, to dispatch Humanities XML Group content. So far, it seems to do exactly what it says on the can. Fiddly bits: the Java Servlets (running Tomcat for now) and getting around XSL. It seems to me, though, that for a no-programming (other than bits of XML) solution, it's really well put together... Linux (on MY desktop)

First things first: I'm just outside Newmarket in a village called Wickhambrook (for the record I'm a very new subscriber to alug) I have just started a new job where, like Adam (nice web server by the way!), we can pretty much choose between W2k (spit) and something GNU. I installed Mandrake 7.2 ans then a raft of upgrades and it now works beautifully... I work out my desktop tasks as follows:- Browsing: Exclusively Mozilla (0.7 at present) except when Konqueror gets used by some legacy K application (like K-mail - anyone know how to stop this?) I don't find Moz too slow at all but it's lack of a Quicktime plug-in is a pain... Email: K-mail is good and getting even better (IMHO). Handles HTML when I want it too, gives me th power to add MIME headers to things when I have to send HTML and has a simple but effective filtering system. Usenet news: Got a bit clever with this (you can tell I'm still a Linux newbie) and setup Leafnode via crontab to collect my news at certain fixed times when the bandwidth is available and then Knode or Pan to read it. Office Apps: Star Office 5.2. Yes it's slow to start up (I'm sure that's 'cause I installed the lot - it's great having 90Gb of storage!!) but does the job. Try to use Gnome or K Office stuff if I can for speed. I do the same on both my home and office machines (although the office one isn't agentised, as it's on a permanent connection), with roles, filtering, adaptive scoring, virtual groups, etc, and it just leaves anything else trailing in the dust. The price you pay for that is extensive configuration is needed to make the extensive configurability work for you. For those that haven't seen thatware, it's simply a Slashdot (or PHP-Nuke) like system for posting news articles. Sony Vaio PCMCIA cd-rom drive

Hi People, Does anyone have one of the above? as I have had my vaio with transmeta processor for a few months now and havn't got around to installing linux (no netboot, no cd-rom drive, no floppy drive, and loadlin doesn't work grrr..). I have tried loadlin and the kernel does not come up!? and using a USB floppy is ok but I havn't now got the floppy drive as it was borrowed and I would need to make new boot disks with USB floppy support (which is a pain). also I have been ill for the past week so may not make it on Sunday, and almost certainly won't have new Debian cd's. WBH has sent me a copy of his boilerplate - which should keep me busy for a few weeks ;-) I intend to bring a jaz drive with me on Sunday (haven't got a cdw yet so I'm hoping to borrow the company Jaz instead (should give me a chance to play SCSI anyways) - together with the necessary stuff for SourceNavigator, Insight and gdb5.0 if anyone wants to grab a copy. I also intend to have a network card in my machine by then but if not does anyone know how to link up using another method (parallel, serial, modem)? Also I installed via and RPM if that makes any difference.. I am considering just going straight for the 2.4 kernel, maybe that would be a bit less painful? RH Kernel Upgrade problems...

Hi everyone... Hoping that somone can shed a bit of light on a problem I'm having.. I have installed all the necessary rpm's (I think), yet after editing the lilo.conf and running lilo -v I'm getting a strange error message telling me that it's too big !!! So I open the mail to find a send failure, redirected to root@localhost. Then I scan the message to find the contents of my /etc/shadow file nicely included in the body of the mail! - together with some TCP info (ip address etc) OK So it seems I got Trojaned. OK OK So I should have tripwire or AIDE installed.... I haven't cleaned the box yet - gonna be a major prob to do that. Is anyone aware of any known trojans with this behaviour. The key - I think - is the sendto address on the mail : mmteam(a)techemail.criticalpath.net Ring any bells?? (BTW please feel free to pass this mail on to any buds who may be interested). I haven't checked the email address yet, I was thinking of rewriting the encrypted password entries to render tham useless then sending the mail, or just sending a blank email to see if it bounces (ie. they've moved on) or if not then the only reason I know about this is the fact that my sendmail is not set up at all. Just goes to show - I have been a naughty boy recently and downloaded tons of stuff from FTP Sites all over the place but I think I could narrow the suspect packages down to about 5 or 6 if pushed. Cups and Distiller

Hi, I have just installed Cups on my Linux box. I have installed the Epson Stylus Photo 750 driver, and the Adobe Distiller driver. The Epson works perfectly, but every time I send a job to the distiller, it just seems to produce a postscript file instead of a PDF. Linux and Music

I remember someone from the user group mentioning that he was interested in music applications for Linux but despite looking back over the last few months of mailing list archives I haven't discovered who. Anyway I'd be interested to hear whether anyone has found software to do the following: 1. Capture MIDI events from an external midi controller keyboard to a MIDI file whilst at the same time playing them on the sound card, despite the fact that the soundcard doesn't have a midi synth on-board. I have found timidity which is able to play MIDI files on my sound card (Soundblaster PCI = ES1371) but there doesn't seem to be a way to use this real time, i.e. it expects the data in a file. I also tried a couple of MIDI sequencer programs, one of which is the one built in to rosegarden and the other whose name I forget but both complained that the high-level MIDI interface to the sound card wasn't available and refused to do anything useful. 2. Music Typesetting. Currently I have Rosegarden but I find that entering notes with this program is very slow, so I'd be interested to hear if there is anything else out there. Here is the official announcement of the next ALUG meeting (ALUG 2001.1) which will be at Syleham Village Hall, Syleham, Suffolk on Sunday 4th Feb 2001 2:00 - 6:00 pm. Venue details at http://www.anglian.lug.org.uk/venues/syleham.html. The hall will cost us a tenner again, which is still pretty cheap, so contributions on the day will be most welcome. Syleham and Wingfield Computer Club have said they will provide tea and coffee again which is nice of them. If you're coming post to the list with any suggestions or assistance you need. I've got thousands of projects i keep shelving that would take a few pointers to get me going again, such as Samba, pcmcia, although i will feel a bit guilty firing questions with no particular input. I keep wondering if i could help out by writing anything for the website from a newbie (ugh i hate that word) point of view, but even that seems beyond my present capabilities :) I'm quite good at eating biscuits. And i could compare two wheel experiences with the guy who has just moved to Red Lodge.

I'm sorry to be a pest, but I am completely in the dark as to what actually happens at an ALUG meeting - from what i can gather we all turn up with as many bits as possible and join them together and get them working/networked/whatever whilst drinking copious amounts of hot liquids. Or cold, if there is a pub at the end of the road. Are there many at meetings, do you know each other, are there any others like myself who are struggling with the basics still, is it worth coming even if you don't bring your linux box, etc? Possible Venue -- I need help!

Hi all, I spoke on the phone to the owners of the St Augustine's Centre, King's Lynn, and it *looks like* it will be possible to hold some meetings there. However, they want to know what we're looking for in a venue so they can see give us the most appropriate room before committing to anything. So, the question is: what do we want from a venue? (FWIW, I doubt the centre cafe will be open at weekends, but a shop is at the end of the road and a pub is around two hundred metres away, don't fret.) I could also do with any help from this area in setting up, if possible, and reminding by past venue organisers how much has been paid for their venues. I've got my eye on mid-March, but my desire for ALUG to visit Essex for a first time is still undiminished if anyone is able to organise things for there. -- MJR

Hello I've just got my X-Chat to work, so i thought I'd see what was about, I visited a Linux Help channel, and could not believe what i saw, a guy came in asking for help with lilo he was having to use a boot disc to start his linux, and asked if anyone could tell him how to install lilo properly. What happened they totally ignored him and carried on talking to (well taking the p*** out of some bloke that wanted to record something without a pc or tape deck), after i pointed out this chap the reply was "there are hundreds or pages of help written", Its the same as taking a car to a garage and the mechanic saying to you go bye a book and repair it your self, how can the Linux world expect to encourage new users with answers like that, when with "Windows" all you have to do is look through the yellow pages and you will find someone to help you despite all the help pages that are written. Well, it depends what you're using... in the console, epic is probably the best; graphically, X-Chat for Gnome and kvIRC for KDE, I think. Here are some ideas from an IRC chat this evening. Please comment on them. Main point is that it's probably useful to have a "round table" type discussion at the next meeting about what we're going to do. Hope this doesnt offend too many but the mailing list seems to be used for general rambling so: n agency phoned me last nite looking for someone with NT networking experience to go to a company with 5 or 6 Unix pcs and expand the network to ~120 pcs suposedly running Windows with NT control. A suitable candidate would have a free hand so you might be able to Linux/Star Office the whole thing.... I think the work is in Herts and for 30k+. Even so-called "lifestyle" pieces about your setup in general or what you perceive to be a niche interest are interesting and useful, because out there somewhere is someone who'll find themselves in a similar situation and they can learn from your experience. For example, I'm interested in computer-controlled/synthesized music, but I never have time to download and test Linux music software, so I'd reat articles on that. That's just an example, not a request for an article! Hi Guy's n Ladies? I'm new to the Anglia area, just moved into Red Lodge (real sprawling metropolis!!). Been using Linux, both in comercially and private environments and was wondering when the next meet is and where? I've got a couple of Netfinity 4500's a Netfinity 5500, couple of PC300GL's all running RH6.0 -> 6.2, various cisco switches and a couple of routers to have a play with that I could bring along... Simon

Although I've been imploring people to "reply to all", sending responses to private messages in public is still a bit taboo... ...and FWIW, I'd be quite interested to see some Netfinity kit one of these days, besides the adverts I'm always getting bombarded with. As people know, while working for the Union, I was trying to work wonders with obsolete kit (and *usually* succeeding), but I'm hoping to have decent things to play with this year (not for the Union, although TSW have just got quite a fun desktop box, eh Brett?) ;-) Anyway, let's try not to be too harsh. Sorry, I didn't mean it quite like that. I was just curious why someone had cisco routers at what I assumed, wrongly, was home, but it would appear they are not used for a simple home network, but more a server farm. sorry if I didn't get this across first time. When I last bumped into John on IRC (eu.openprojects.net #alug), he suggested Feb 3rd as a possible date for a meeting at Syleham (nice venue details page on new website as soon as it appears). How does that grab people? Is that a possibility, John? Another meeting is pencilled in for UEA on "UK Linux Day", 29th April, which should be a huge installfest with demos. More on that as and when I know it. Initial dayglo website at http://www.linuxday.org.uk/ and that's another one needing help. If you can help with it, get in touch with me and I'll pass the offers on. Corporate members with time (are there any?), I suspect you could probably snarf an ad slot in return. Distro's, Hardware and Gaming

Having Just ordered a hardware upgrade for my aging 200mhz K2, I was thinking I might treat my self to a decent graphics card at the same time. So I have a couple of questions. Which Distro would people recommend for ease of install and maintainance, also are there any which install the bttv driver as default? Is the GeForce 2 chipset supported under linux? What are there in the way of Linux games available? Can I drive the old matrox mystique with the new Geforce at the same time in the same PC? Hi All, I've only just joined ALUG, so a quick intro: My name is Earl Brannigan, I work near Newmarket for a small software house and eventually convinced the boss after much effort to go Linux, Now he loves it and we've put together some nice stuff on Linux Web Servers (Not our own page yet mind). But I am now pretty proficient with apache, security etc so we'll see. I run Linux at home - Red-Hat 6-2, and have been doing pretty well with it - until 4am some nights. So here's the problem : Wanting to use my 56k Internal Hardware PCI Modem I eagerly awaited kernel-2.4, and was probably one of the first to grab it from kernel.org in the early morning of Jan 6th. I then spent some time finding and installing the necessary support stuff - especially ppp-2.4. Now having built the kernel, installed the necessary other stuff etc my ppp refuses to work - I get the dial out, the PAP works, then nothing (BTW - My machine is much faster with the new kernel, and the PCI probing etc has improved the functionality of my soundcard - it also talks to my motherboard better (VIA Apollo) and uses my Celery Processor to the max). Looking through the logs I am getting unfound modules for ppp (I also installed modutils-2.4 and ksymoops-2.4) Am I missing something? I use either kppp or rp3 to take care of the connection, which also utilize wvdial I think. Do I need to recompile these packages from source in order to utilize the new ppp libraries? Or do I have to wait for updated versions to be released. If so how do I utilize pppd without them? If anyone has any thoughts/suggestions just push em through, or if you need other info I'd be glad to supply it. Just let me know. Many Thanks. Happy Linuxing Earl

Hi, At long last the Great Website Renovation is done. We should be on Martyn's host and fully operation in a few days, and I think that includes email redirectors for anyone that wants them (right Martyn?). In the short term, I need your help to make the site more substantial. From the old site, we have: - Contact details page - Mailing list sign-up and archive - Meetings information for the first five - Meeting venues information (in the next day or two) This is a general call for articles on any Linux-related topic. You can provide them in a number of ways, including marked up into very simple XML (much simpler than HTML), or just by making text and graphics available to me somehow. I'm just looking for a distro I can control what it puts on the system and one which will configure all my hardware out the box, My current distro, Peanut, recognised most of my hardware straight away, I had to edit rc.modules to add the correct module for the zip drive. I have a room that is 7'*7' My intention was to have a 17" monitor on my desk connected to the Geforce card, This I would use for most stuff like games etc... on the other side of the room I was going to put my old 15" monitor so I can use it for watching TV in bed. I also like the good 'ol games. I have fond memorys of chucky egg on the BBC, which I still have and will one day connect to my linux network :o), I quite like the idea of porting it to linux, but thats abit beyond my level ATM. Space invaders, Snake and hardball/breakout are all good for winding down. The other classics I quite like are Duke nukem 3d, doom trilogy, and a friend has got me into playing Rogue spear on his PC.
