This has happened only since I changed inetd for xinetd and lsof -i :600 gives me: xinetd 16112 root 6u IPv4 318948149 UDP *:600 which I understand means that xinetd is using port 600. Basically if you are just too far for ADSL then you may be able to get connected with the Extended Reach trial (using normal ADSL equipment). AFAIK, in windows there is a separate root directory for each disk so when windows tries to resolve a path which refers back to the root directory but doesn't specify a drive letter it will assume the current drive. So, for example, if your CD drive was E: /fred/somepage.htm would resolve to E:/fred/somepage.htm Of course, Unix-like OSes are different and have a single root directory so this doesn't work. You could work round this by creating symbolic links in the real root directory for each top-level directory on the CD. You could so this automatically like: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "ln -s /mnt/cdrom/" $8 " /" $8;}' | sh When you've finished browsing the CD you can remove the links: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "rm -f /" $8;}' | sh This is a little ugly but it's all I can think of ATM. I did only have the one brief attempt. I'll try either a USB or PS2 mouse then to free the serial port, or see if I can easily get the usb-serial doobry. [Alug]Browsing files on CD

Please could someone shed some light on this: I received a CD-rom from the USA this morning, which contains a load of directories, in each of which is a selection of HTML files and related .JPG and .GIF images. There is also a front page .HTML file in the root directory and that file has links to all of the other pages scattered about the CD. I can start up Opera/Mozilla and open the front page without any difficulty, but all links are unreachable. When I move the cursor over a link, I find that its address is shown as (for example) 'file:///fred/somepage.htm', whereas I would have expected it to be '/mnt/cdrom/fred/somepage.htm'.... On the CD jewel case it says that the CD is for Doze and that 'other browsers may not work properly'. Is there a solution to this? It seems as though all the files are separately accessible - I can open any .HTM file manually in Opera, but the links don't work. Thanks for any help! Gerald.

[Alug]"From Boot to Halt" talk, Norwich sunday 28th September.

At the last meeting it was suggested that we have the 'From Boot to Halt' talk at the next Norwich sunday meeting (2pm Sunday 28th September, Nelson Room, The Billy Bluelight, Hall road) MJR has offered to start it off: " I'm happy to give an overview/introduction talk (kernel startup, hand-off to init, types of init, runlevels, common tasks, that sort of thing) and present a poster on some aspect no-one else wants to do." It would be great if there are one or two other people who are willing to join in with information on other aspects of the boot process, especially anyone involved in development or doing any other "fun stuff with start-up and shutdown". An A3 or 2xA4 poster would be helpful too. Some useful and interesting topics would include ways to handle power management/UPS, particularly as more people move to using laptops. Something on APM/ACPI for example? Anyone who is interested, please respond either to the list or privately to either myself and/or Mark. In any event, the introductory talk on the boot process will take place at this meeting - further details and announcement to follow. Syd

Hi The Do Different Computer Show that was discussed on IRC has been cancelled. However as a replacement a Spectrum and SAM Coupé computer Show called ORSAM 2003 is to be held in Norwich. At the show I would like to have a computer (Linux?) with a webcam and irc server running so that people in North America and others who could not turn up could take part in the show. Maybe a Spectrum or SAM could be connected to it take part in the IRC chat. I could provided a broadband connect only a few metres from the venue, a webcam, a computer and a spectrum. What I do not have is Wireless hardware, knowledge or much time on the day, though I will give what I can.
