I like the idea of starting a -newbie list to separate the beginners from the hardcore. I think all this talk about PHP/mySQL/XML databases and stuff is enough to scare off anyone thinking of trying Linux. Not quite a linux user, yet. List splitting

This list is getting busy now and some people are unsubscribing because of the volume. What should we do? 1. Do nothing. Leave alug@stu as the one list and hope people use digest etc to filter it. 2. Split list. Break certain topics off into other lists. a) alug (LUG traffic only), alug-announce (announcements only), alug-talk (general chatter not necessarily ALUG-related) b) alug (as it has been usually), alug-hackers (in-depth tech talk) c) alug (as it has been this week), alug-help (general help) 3. Gateway onto a private news server somewhere. Should make it easier for people to only download stuff they want, but is possibly incompatible with the previously-discussed spam blocking. 4. Newbie needs help

Hi, Following a successful install of RedHat 6.0 on an older machine I have recently changed to a Mandrake 7.2 and a quicker machine with all the bells and whistles on the motherboard. This includes networking, sound and USB. I don't have any USB devices but I'm blowed if I can get networking or sound working. The error is similar in both cases. The machine complains that the device or resource is busy. The only book I have refers to RH 4 something and I've lent that to somebody so it's not immediately to hand. Can anybody offer sensible suggestions as to how I can fix these problems? I have not been to any of the IRC meetings as an (ex-CWC) NTL user I cannot get free access to the Internet (i.e. call charges). I hope to get a cable modem if NTL hurries up. I was the person at Linuxday (at the UEA) who was given the Debian CD-R that was burned there. I now have installed it successfully. By the way do you think the Donald Knuth books are worth buying? As for the ALUG language debate :-), how about Miranda, which is available for Linux. Another possibility is that you could use Yag assembler which I am developing, perhaps a version LISP could be created for it. As the project is open we could develop clients in whatever languages liked, may be. If XHTML is I could use my web broswer as a client.
