I have tried millions of combinations now for all the kppp settings in kde and still the same error is coming up:- "The pppd daemon died unexpectedly" The debug file reports the folowing:- "localhost pppd[625] The remote system is required to authenticate itself but localhost pppd [625] counldnt find any secret (password) which would let it use an IP address." I have tried a manual login script as well and the same error occurs. OT: BT, ADSL, Cable Modems

That's tech-speak for "we're gonna lose revenue here". Number two both Telewest and NTL are rolling our Cable modems over the next few months. Perhaps someone could enlighten me as to the differences between cable and adsl (other than the tv and telephony services cable also provides)? I might add that I signed up to BTInternet Wednesday upon their announcement of the free evening calls. Other than their dialup boxes going dead early Wed evening, I've not seen any problems yet. Sure, it's slower than Demon, but still acceptable (4k/sec web, 4-7/8k/sec news). I've not set mail up yet. I have had one or two disconnections, but nothing appalling. If only BT would allow full unmetered access *sigh*. s/BT: It's Good to Talk/BT: Taking the Piss/g James. Don't drink more than 3 litres in one evening and break your laptop with you PhD on it!! (Sorry, Mike!!!) A friend of mine runs Office '97 under the latest stable version - it seems to be quite solid. Most apps I used to occasionally use under Wine, I now use native versions... sorry! Andi p.s. Machine Lockups

Hi guys, I'm feeling a little out of my depth here on this one. This box was built two Autumns ago (1998) and has only had a monitor change since. Using RH6.0. Tonight, on two seperate occassions, between 30 seconds and one minute into my dialup Internet connection, my machine has totally locked up. The only commonality has been the dialup and corresponding disk activity (sendmail and fetchnews kicking in). I have had an in-between dialup connection that stayed up fine. The screen freezes. No mouse, no keyboard. The four consoles do not respond. No beeps occur on keyboard buffer overflow as you'd normally expect. The modem stays on-line, but Rx/Tx lights go dead. The hard disk stops rattling completely (I can normally hear it all the time). I have 64MB RAM, 128MB swap. gkrellm shows swap to be at or less than 1/4 used, RAM between half and 3/4 used. I run GNOME 1.0.53 and E 0.16 and on both occassions had two Eterms up. Absolutely nothing out of the normal, bar having 'daytime' uncommented in /etc/services (I was trying out a networking code sample from a book). I have now commented it back out. I was not accessing audio/cdrom devices, nor floppy (LS-120). I am using kernel 2.2.12, and have been for smoe time. The only thing that comes to mind is possibly swapfile corruption, but I don't even know if it's possible with Linux/ext2 or whatever. Unless the problem is an apparently random hardware fault. I must admit since using GNOME again this past few days memory has been a little lacking. Ideas? New users distribution

SuSE is a solid distro. SuSE never seems to be mentioned in some circles, but its pretty damn good and worth at look at. It seems to be on par with Slackware in that lots of people use it for their server operating systems. Oh well... my two pence worth!! You don't know a good think when you see it..... When I was an UG at essex we were using some crap in house 68000 box with no virtual memory or dma and a crap prot of SYS-V I think.... Trouble with gimp

Is this your home directories and CVS repository? I can recommend StorageTec tape silos!! We back up 15PetaBytes of data on these!!! :-) Seriously, DAT's are fine. At home I back up (using BRU I must admit) across multiple DAT's. If you get a DAT drive with an Autochange it'll do this automagically for you during the night. Any half decent backup software will support the autochanger. Some of my FTP Server's here at work I backup to DLT's. These are fine for smallish file servers - well 40GB on one tape. Have fun... I guess I better get this back on a linux related theme ;).. does anybody have any suggestions for a reasonable backup devices other than dat under linux ?? we need to back up about 15 gig, dosen't have to be than fast, (well overnight will do!).. it seems that dat's are now becomming a little small ;).. please, no suggestions of 15 jazz drives ;).. Hey all, Okay, I am stuck in this uni machine. It uses gdm to login, and presents only KDE as the possible environment. But hark! /usr/X11R6/bin/wmaker is present! I tried killall -9 kwm && wmaker (as per a suggestion) but it simply logged me out. Anyone got any bright ideas? (I have a related question for those who answer correctly.) James.
