Hi all, You'll notice that I don't post often to this list, but I find it hard not to comment in this case. For those who don't know me, I write for a number of magazines including Internet and Linux Format, I've worked in most IT roles from techie grunt to technical director, in companies from two employees to many thousands, and I now work for myself, with a number of clients from small Norfolk concerns to a multinational travel conglomerate. My own Web servers are all Linux-based, and my desktop and laptop dual-boot between Windows (XP and 2000) and Red Hat 7.2. My main client right now has a large Oracle database running on Solaris, with the file and print services Windows 2000-based and all desktops running Windows 2000 Pro. We develop in FoxPro (don't ask) and VB6/VB.NET. >hmmm. Why are people against Microsoft? It's not because their products are crap, it's because they're portrayed as bullies (which is often justified, but which is sometimes done just because they're Microsoft). One of the many hats I wear is as a judge on the UK Networking Industry Awards. We do barrack Microsoft sometimes, because there's no denying they're far from being a perfect company. However, when I gave the award in one of the categories I was judging last year to Microsoft, my fellow judges had their tongues firmly in their cheeks when they said: "Blimey, you gave it to Microsoft!". My reason for awarding it? Their product was better than the others in its category, and the reason my colleagues inserted tongue into cheek before invoking speech was that they knew that despite the bull you hear, Microsoft does occasionally knock out a gem of a product. We used to have the same thing in the networking industry with Cisco, in fact - some of their gear was utter crap and Bay Networks (now Nortel) in particular used to knock spots off them. But from time to time you had to admit that Cisco was doing it best, and gave them a good review. Incidentally, one of the other hats I wear is as a judge for the British Computer Society programming competition (and some equivalents that we're running this year for IBM and for Barclays Capital). Some ex-SYS types may remember that I've been along from time to time to do a lecture in the Professional Practice course for final year students. The point I always attempt to make in such talks is that university teaches you a great deal about the theory of how stuff works, but gives little or no exposure to current real-world technologies. Any understanding at all of real-world technologies, or even (in this case) knowledge of the current products on the market, is of benefit to the new graduate sitting in an interview trying to look more knowledgable than the next guy. Obviously in an ideal world one would have the ability to meet a number of manufacturers, but the usual rules apply: the biggest, richest ones are the ones most likely to spend the time and money doing this type of visit. I would hope that many people on this list are grown up enough to realise that if you're going to produce the best solution for your company/employer/client, you have to be technology-independent and vendor-independent, at least at the start of the decision process. And it's true that there are factors other than how good a technology is when you're deciding - right now, for instance, I have a dilemma because the best product (in terms of technology and performance) for a project I'm working on is produced by a company whose prices are exorbitant and whose pre- and after-sales service sucks. When you're a technology journalist you learn to be independent. I've nearly been shot in previous years for standing up in a Novell press conference (after they'd paid for my business class ticket to Atlanta) and saying "If you were Microsoft you'd give away NDS for NT for free, not charge your proposed $70 per seat, and you'd corner the market". Interestingly, the following day I had a one-to-one with one of their VPs who told me he'd been trying to tell them the same thing for weeks. There are valid reasons for being negative about Microsoft - the most obvious in recent years being Windows NT 4, which was as far from being a stable operating system as Concorde is from being a quiet, economical commuter jet. But they didn't get where they are today (and nor did Cisco, and nor did BT, and nor did British Airways, and so on for any other company that people automatically get negative about) by being universally rubbish. FW: Temporary bash corruption

Hi, A strange thing happend to my machine over the weekend. I had been merrily working away for a few hours using various terminals and then suddenly when I opened a new terminal it would immediatly exit. I tried logging in to a virtual terminal ( rather than a terminal in x ) and got the same thing. After playing around for a while I discovered that if I tried to run bash from an already open terminal it would exit immediatley with a segmentation fault. I managed to get it to dump a core file but then realised I didn't have a debugger and no way to install one as I couldn't log in as root. I copied bash from my other PC (Same version, same distribution) and did a diff which reported that the files were different. I eventually gave up trying to save my machine and rebooted. After re-booting everything worked fine! Doing the same diff reported that the files were identical. Examing the log files showed nothing unusual. I don't have any idea where to start looking for the cause and wondered if anyone could suggest anything. For your info I am running debian 3 with the supplied kernel 2.4.18-k7 and using ext3 on all my filesystems. USB + 2.4.19 + pcmcia

Hi list, two-in-one question time. First the USB problem: Has anyone else experienced problems with USB using kernel 2.4.19? I managed to lock my box up entirely just now simply by plugging the USB cable in, other times it will be fine, then a few days ago I had a kernel panic when transferring a large amount of data over the USB. I can't see many problems reported on google, so it may be I've missed something vital from USB support in the kernel or something silly? Then the PCMCIA problem: Can I simply copy the /lib/modules/2.2.20/pcmcia directory to /lib/modules/2.4.19/pcmcia in order to try and get my pc card working in 2.4.19 as well as 2.2.20, or does it not work like that doe to the way the kernels handle modules? I'm anxious *not* to blow anything up! Many thanks, Jenny.

adding a prog (DHCP) to rc in debian

OK. Debian Woody... So I've ditched pump and installed dhcp3-client. However, this client doesn't start up at boot time. man dhcp3 doesn't have any entries. I'm a little stumped. How could I find binary the package installed, and then, how could I get it to start when linux boots to a networked run level. Anyone tried out Red Hat 8.0 or Mandrake 9.0 yet?

Both of these distro's seem to be getting good write ups wrt their ease of installation with some articles (see www.theregister.co.uk) even suggesting they are now serious challengers to MS Windows. I wondered if anyone in ALUG has any practical experience of these yet? By the way, spent an evening playing around with installing Woody last night. Very impressed, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who didn't have at least a smattering of technical knowledge of unix or pc hardware, but, personally, I found it installed very smoothly except for insisting I should install ISDN support (even though I don't have ISDN!? or, at least, I don't think I have :o) ) and producing a very bizarre XF86Config file. Both of these were fairly easily dealt with and everything else ran quite happily, I suspect I'd unintentionally selected some unwanted options somewhere along the line. Thanks for the broadband info. I think the MAC address NTL want is the one on their modem not the one in your PC - I now found out the modem signal is 20db down so they're sending out an engineer. Re M$ - I have slagged them off for years for lock-in but I would recommend anyone who does internet programming to have a very good look at .NET And then at http:\\www.go-mono.com If they (or someone else) can provide the .NET framework for apache2 and a nice IDE no workstation in any business with an IT aware staff will ever need to upgrade their workstations again. Meeting at London Linux Expo?

The London Linux Expo is next week, Wednesday and Thursday, probably http://www.linuxexpo.co.uk/ or similar. Previous years, ALUG people have met up around lunchtime for a (not so) swift drink in the pub over the road. Can I suggest that we continue the tradition and meet up at 1pm on the Thursday by the Association For Free Software and Debian stands? And to provide a little more info on the problem.... I use pump as it was (for whatever reason) installed with Debian Woody. Changing my dhcp client would require a net connection.... One thing I found out (by STFW: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/28208) was that Linux broadcasts it's MAC address in a different way to Windoze, so the suggestion was to reset the set top box, bring up the interface, then re-register on NTL. Fine, only there's a problem. I wish to use a dedicated router/firewall (www.ipcop.org). I'm fine with transferring NICs between computers, however the ipcop box *could* ping outside (having transferred the NIC, and resolve hosts. So that kinda throws that theory away. Unfortunately, clients on the internal network can't resolve hosts or ping outside going through the ipcop firewall. (also, ipcop has now browser capable of doing the register process anyway. in fact, it comes with no browser). Me too! lol Indeed, I get an IP address, DNS, and gateway, but it can't ping the external network, or resolve any hostnames. I've spent all day today doing this! What do you put in your hosts file when you use DHCP? i.e. my old one was something like: 127.0.0.1 localhost 10.0.0.1 pixiedust pixiedust But as I don't know my IP in advance- what should I do? NTL Broadband

I've had NTL broadband installed and, for the life of me, cant get anything other than W2K/IE5.5 to connect to it properly. Starting Open Office v1.0

Open Office takes one and a half minutes to start on my machine running Debian Testing. The machine has 1.3 GHz Athlons and 512MB RAM so I don't think that's the problem. Anyone else have a similar experience? Barry Samuels

How to waste a Friday night.

I couldn't point sourceslist to the internet obviously, so I used the main woody install disk someone had burnt for me. Guess what, the cdrom wasn't functioning. So I set up a samba share to the windows cdrom and tried that, which didn't work as samba asking for a password coincided each time with apt-get asking to insert cdrom and press enter, so it kept going in a loop. So I copied the entire 650m cdrom contents to the linux box and pointed apt at that, whooping with joy when I got the source-list right, but it kept erroring out halfway through. So on Saturday I put in a cdrom drive that worked, pointed sources list back to the cdrom, and then found out the burnt cdrom was faulty and the second half wouldn't read. Of course, I could have saved hours of time and had an internet connection simply by putting the winmodem in the windows machine, but that would have been *far* too easy. Anyhow, thanks to all for the USB and kernel answers, I'm now about to upgrade the laptop as that seems the best option. Thanks. Jenny.

Also what sound card have you got ? I have a soundblaster Live 256 and I had this problem because I had connected the CD Audio via the Digital output of the Drive rather than the more conventional Analogue outputs. By default on the Soundblaster drivers, Digital inputs are muted hence no CD sound. Have you checked the volume setting of the CD inputs on your soundcard (use Kmix or someting similar) CD sound does not require any interaction of the software drivers or computer apart from setting the volume as they are simply a passthrough to the soundcard output. USB + kernel

Would anyone recommend a kernel other than 2.2.20 for USB support? I'm having problems, even after following many steps in many threads and howto pages. I did read kernels 2.2.x have only flaky USB support, maybe that is the problem. Thanks, Jenny.

My company wont give me time off for a Linux expo and holidays are hard to come by. Installing WordPerfect on Debian

Hi Folks, Is anyone running WordPerfect on Debian? If so then how did you install it? I have obtained two Corel Linux WordPerfect 8.0 tarballs (guilg00.gz and guilguk0.gz) which I would like to install on my Debian 3.0 system. I have followed the instructions and copied them into a temp directory (/opt/wp80) then used "tar xvfz" to unpack them. Amongst the unpacked files is one called "Runme" which I ran ("./Runme") as root. It asks me if I have untared all the files. I reply "y". It says "Extracting files... Please wait.". It then comes up with an error message "Linux 2.4.18-bf2.4 not certified. Continue?" to which I reply "y". I then get literally screenfulls of error messages about files not being found. The error messages scroll past far to fast to read but I managed to catch the final screen's worth and have put it below. Anyone have a clue what is going wrong? Why is there no deb package for wordperfect? It would make sence its a nice editor, or are there lissenceing problems? I belive there is an error in WP that means you have to pach it to work... but i think that that is just a date problem 00 == 2000 == 1900 type date problem. Its not supported by corel any more, but i think there is a patch... and a big user groupe on the web some where. Has anyone played with one of these yet ?, I was looking at the Dabs catalogue and noticed that they are for sale at a reasonable price. I am tempted as I wanted to replace my trusty old Palm, and was even considering a Pocket PC device. I like the idea of Linux on a PDA (but I still have some major reservations about it's suitability) and I can't find any reviews on the Net. Previous Linux/PDA efforts seem to have had lukewarm reception from reviewers and seeing as Dixon's are unlikely to stock this toy I can't exactly go and try one out. Cheers Wayne

console reset

Hi Alug: tty1 has hung in minicom; I have removed the lockfile and stopped the minicom process but have now been left with the image and a flashing cursor and I can't communicate at all with that console. I had a reset problem a few months back, so I looked up the thread we had on that, but they all assume being able to talk directly on that tty. I've read the getty man page, and tried a few things. If I try to kill the process a new one begins and the image remains. "reset tty1" from another console asks for terminal type, I say vt102 and it tells me a bunch of stuff including "kill is ^U", but they all do nothing. It's severely annoying. Jen.

Kernel Dumping garbage to Port 80h

For reasons I won't go into to much, the kernel dumping stuff to port 80 is causing me problems as I use port 80 for something else (some homebrew hardware plugged into my PCI bus) Generally port 80 is only used by the post code in the Bios to output debugging information. When I built my hardware I assumed that after post was complete nothing would be written to 0x80 so it was safe for me to use. Well with any other OS that is true, but Linus has done a dirty hack to fix I/O timing in the kernel. Perl split function...

HELLPPPP.... OK, I've got an IP address in a variable $address, I know because print qq($ipaddress); gives me the address trying to split it into it's singular octets like so... (As usernames on the system are derived from the last 2 octets of the address) @octets = split(/./, $ipaddress); Now from what I understand the elements in the array @octets should be accessable by $octets[0] etc.. Or while (@octets) { print qq(Octet = $_); } But it doesn't... Or am I way off mark... Please help.... TIA Simon

Networking Linux to MS Windows through ethernet

First, I am a newbie, I do read the have search the ALUG mail postings, I have RTFM (in fact, I have read way too many FM's) and I just can't get a network between my Linux and Window/98 machine to work to share files. I have to admit that I have tried many things and may have created my own problem, but I want to learn how to fix it without starting from scratch (although, if necessary, I will). When running the SAMBA configurator, under KDE is get the Konqueror message: "Could not connect to host 127.0.0.1 (port 901). I have a Dell 233mhz, Pentium II, Optiplex GXA, with several "on-(mother)board" features: sound, video, ethernet, and USB. The sound, video, and USB function perfectly. I have also attempted to install a second ethernet card and it is physically installed and I did the software changes that one of the HOW-Tos described, but I'm not sure if it was correct, since ifconfig doesn't show it. I have a link below for details. Any help would be greatly appreciated, since I am trying to convince my management to change over from the MS products to the open systems GPL products. The old timers may remember the war that IBM fought to keep their PC hardware and firmware (BIOS) proprietary - forcing competitors making clone machines to do "clean room" BIOs coding and design their own hardware, too. Gaining a cost and time to market advantage for IBM for quite a while. It guaranteed a lot of flaky hardware designs, too. ( Remember the Amstrad 286 HD fiasco? ) Compaq were established in this era; and never quit designing their own hardware. Even today, when it is no longer necessary, or desirable, to deviate too far from accepted "industry standards". They were beginning to get wise to the fact that it is no longer desirable! Two decades later... Only to be swallowed by HP. Go figure. It is cheaper to use "industry standard" chipsets from a third party than to re-invent complex hardware, in the design process. Some big corporations just failed to adapt, and tried to lock in customers to their particular hardware, when the game had moved on to proprietary lock-ins via software: EULAs and proprietary protocols "embracing and extending" open standards. I can pretty much guarantee data loss ( or total operating system loss ) on *any* Compaq where you attempt to force an OS to use DMA when it is not selected by the default install. Quite a few laptop clones are like the Compaq ( I had a Twinheed one just a few weeks ago ). Desktop PCs can also be found with iffy DMA hardware design. Beware the data corruption bug when shifting large quantities of data between IDE ports on some chipsets, too. ( One range of SiS chipsets suffered from this AFAIR ) Although IDE is a blocking type device, the DMA behaviour can also vary from a single device per IDE port to multiple devices daisy-chained on one IDE port. Had I decided to use a cheaper IDE CD Burner on my SiS chipset Desktop ( 2001 Motherboard design ) I'd have walked right into the data corruption problem! ( I prefer to have at least two separate hardware disk channels, one of them SCSI, for best VM performance, anyway. ). TESTING: If you multiboot with Windows 9x ( perhaps to use Office 97 from Wine ) it is easy to test. Make sure that the Windows boot comes to a real DOS prompt, so you have to start Windows with WIN at the prompt ( edit MSDOS.SYS ). Make COPIES of the registry SYSTEM.D* and USER.D* files! Then - in windows, play with the DMA enables for the IDE Harddrive and CDROM. When windows fails to load you have an answer... ( Restore the registry files, and it should be OK ). I haven't known this to corrupt data on the drive, but I'm not making any promises. The worst that usually happens is that it fails to load the "DOS extender" <*grin*> Try this with Linux, and you will probably trash the filesystem. A disposable Windows test multiboot can be a less shattering test option to determine if your machine has well behaved DMA hardware! But there are no guarantees if you start tweaking hardware related stuff. ( Overclocking is another example ). Eventually, you will reach a point where the probability of a timing error will corrupt data, as timing margins are reduced. Consider that slower disk performance means a higher safety margin against data corruption. The size of IDE hard drives now is such that there is a reasonable statistical likelihood of hitting random data corruption, anyway. -- James To reply by private email DONT delete the "nospam" in Reply To or From header addresses!

I am using the same firmware for both XP and Linux, But that's a good point I'll try some different versions, I'd completely forgotten about the Firmware I've been updating the sourceforge drivers everytime a new version becomes available, but I've never changed the firmware...Doh Thanks I'll give that a go. Given the time I've spent mucking about with this I really should just go out and buy an ADSL Router, but it's become personal now :o) anyway a Router is a waste at home as I only have one machine here. If lots of other people were having this problem I'd just accept that the Alcatel Modem doesn't work very well under Linux and purchase another solution, but seeing as everyone else seems happy with the speedtouch drivers I've GOT to get it working otherwise it's beaten me. and I don't like losing........... Dlink quad ethernet card

I have been playing with a Dlink DFE580TX quad ethernet card. I have used it in both 2.4.x and 2.2.19 kernels and it works a treat. We have got a batch of them at work, and they are now down to a price where they are affordable for the largish home network. Mind you, 4 single cards are still cheaper than one quad, but you save 3 PCI slots. You have to get the latest 'sundance' drivers from http://www.scyld.com/network/sundance.html. Hullo list, When a directory is tarred and gzipped, will it also include any symlinked directories? e.g first directory to be gzipped is /home/jenny, which contains a link to /var/www second directory to be gzipped is /var/www Tarball is created from both these directories. Burning Q: are the files in /var/www being saved in the tarball twice? Jen.

It's also worth considering that a clock for clock comparasion between a PC and a Laptop will always show the laptop to be slower. The Processor, Video Hardware, Drives etc are all optimised for power consumption and size...not speed. The Mobile P4 operates without a bloody great H/Sink fan and draws less power, how do you think it achieves that ? I'm guessing that you have a 8200, Your Gforce 4 Go graphics chip is compareable to a GF2 on a desktop system, again due to power and size considerations. You could have a tinker with the power management setup, it may be set to "Battery Economy" rather than "Performance" The Processor in question is capable of speedstep after all, it may be possible to use the Bogomips value to determine what speed the clock was actually running at, but this is only measured during boot AFAIK. In short Don't expect your laptop to ever perform as well as a 1.6 Ghz desktop system, although that said slower than a 1Ghz does sound a little off, check those power settings. Raid Motherboards

I am going to get a new Motherboard and I want it to have onboard raid. What I was wondering are there any pitfalls to raid drives and Linux and do you know of any good motherboards that have onboard raid and are supported well in Linux. The good news is that money is not one of my main problems, I am looking to spend up to £200 so that should be plenty. I thought I would post this before I get the board, hopefully I can get the right board that is supported by Linux thus stopping me having the problems after I have brought it. Hard Drive performance

I mentioned in an earlier post my move from a P!! igig PC to a new dell laptop with a P4 1.6 gig and how with rh7.3 it seemed slower than the old system. I have now investigated this a little further. I installed rh7.2 becuase I suspected KDE3 was slowing things down but although the slimmer KDE2 is a little faster it is still nowhere near as responsive as the old system. So I have played around a bit with hdparm to see if hard drive performance is a factor. hdparm reports a cache speed of over 200MBytes/sec (basically the memeory bus speed) but the cached disk read speed is a mere 3MBytes/sec. dma is not enebaled by default but if i use hdparm to enable it, cached disk read speed jumps to over 20Mbytes/sec. Set like this, applications load about twice as fast. Then I tried all the PIO modes but this mad eno difference. So I started to set dma modes, starting from 0, but this froze the system and forced me to hard reset. So my questions are: 1. How well should a basic install be able to automagically select good disk drive parameters 2. Where are these stored and actioned? 3. How do I find the best settings for my drive other then very tedious trial and arror? Thanks ian

Networking Trouble - Any Ideas

At home here I have a notebook and desktop PC and I can connect between them via a hub and everything works but when I try a crossover cable instead I get one way transmission, from the desktop to the notebook. Thinking it could be a cable fault I connected the cable the other way found (so the pairs in use were the opposite way round) but still the notebook could see packets coming from the desktop and not the other way round. Does anyone have any tips? Networking Trouble.. stupid ass of Windows 98.

Since there is a steady increase in networking problems ;) But a bit off here and it is windows trouble ;) At the moment, I have 3 boxes (and a fourth one coming soon) hooked up onto a hub. Router = Linux Workstation = Linux Workstation2 = Windows 98 Now I have set Windows 98 networking to the correct IP, gateway address and DNS. But it doesn't see Workstation + the Router! No ping replies, heck the internet isn't there! I cannot ping it from my workstation/router to workstation2 at all. First thought is the cable connection.. Nothing there. Checked IP etc.. seems fine. Don't suggest 'Linux' on Workstation2 since various people in this household wants to use it ;) Just a thought if anyone actually know a fix to this stupid problem... CUPS and epson stylus

I have had my Epson Stylus 680 (usb) set up on this computer before (redhat and mandrake). Having set up a device node as per the USB-printer howto, and set the printer up in CUPS as per the CUPS howto, I send printjobs... but nothing comes out. I'm using the same .upp driver, usb-printer support is compiled into the kernel (2.4.18)... I can't think of what to check. *highly frustrated at USB* Any thoughts? kde3 to rh7.2

I want to upgrade kde2.2 which came with my rh7.2 installation to kde3.0 using a cd of rpms from linuxformat. The README states that this works with 7.2, but following the commandline in the README results in a massive list of failed dependencies. I think that this might be because the original rpms were not installed with the default RedHat installation. At least there are not any in the RPMS folder, and rpm -q returns that none are installed. As I need to remove the kde2.2 rpms to install kde3.0 I'm a bit stuck, hopefully I've just missed something (as usual :-)). Can anyone tell me what that something is? thanks, looking forward to 'faster, slicker, better than ever' Glen

Redhat 7.x RPMs : CDRs anyone?

I'll be at CB2, Cambridge on Sunday. Have some spare time to burn CDRs for interested parties on Saturday, probably. Intel architecture and sub arch types only. Happy to hand stuff over to folk willing to collect in person. I don't have packaging materials to operate a postal service, and don't particularly want to spend money and time doing that. One Good Thing [tm] about all the disk archiving that I've done for the first week of September is to collate all the Redhat 7.x Update RPMS, and other goodies that I've built recently. For folks wanting to update a system from a new install using the original RedHat install CDs, but no ( or slow ) internet access - better to use a CD update archive. The binary update rpms (just) fit on one 700M CDR. Too early for the Redhat 7.2 backport rpms of KDE 3.0.3 that I'm still trying to build and resolve dependancies upon, BUT some other rpm packaged goodies available are: 1) selinux SELDI binary rpms for the 2002082308 release that can be rpm installed in a standard RedHat 7.2 system includes big archive of email from the NSA listserver, and documents / saved articles. 2) postgresql 7.2.2 built for RedHat 7.2 i586 and i686 3) snort IDS with a recent ruleset ( 31st Aug ) I can burn CDRs for anyone willing to compensate me for doing so ( 700M / 80min ) email me privately if interested, please. ( Within reason ) I am willing to mix n' match components to squeeze the number of CDs needed. Sizes of components: ( first column current packages; second column are obsoleted packages, MegaBytes ) RH7.2 Update RPMS: i386 469 426 i586 21 61 i686 50 179 athlon 21 81 noarch 90 0 SRPMS 546 316 images 7 - RH7.3 Update RPMS: i386 180 171 i586 25 37 i686 57 112 athlon 25 49 SRPMS 190 102 selinux : 462 snort : 11 postgres: 24 nmap: 14 Just the stuff that I have to hand. I can probably collate all the KDE 3.0.3 SRPMS from a RedHat 7.2 backporting site, but I haven't had time to resolve dependancy issues and build binaries successfully. Some way to go before all that is operational, and fit to install. These weigh in at about 83 MBytes AFAIR. Anyone else been working on RedHat 7.2 KDE 3.0.3 RPMS by any chance? Webalizer and stdin problem

I want Webalizer to take its input from STDIN by using something like cat various*.log|webalizer -c /path/to/webalizer.conf I find that if I enable DNS lookups, which I want, Webalizer does all the lookups and then stops, displaying the number of addresses resolved, but does not produce any output. If I disable the DNS lookups it produces all the expected output but, of course, no resolved addresses. If I cat the log files to another single file, which I don't want to do, Webalizer will do DNS lookups and produce the expected output if this file is specified as the log file. Does anyone know how I can get Webalizer to do both using STDIN? Regards Barry Samuels

Linux wins!

Once again (can't count the times in the past 6 months alone) Bills creation has taken a dive and I'm done. What I'd like to know now is how differently an install is if it's going to be a Linux only machine? I didn't do any partitioning for the current installation (dual with Win98se - each having their own hd) and let Linux go about it's business. I want to wipe both hd's and start again from scratch with NO Win anything on here. Due to Malcolms kind offer, I'll be installing the ProSuite edition of Mandrake 8.2 and was curious as to how Linux will see/use 2 empty hd's. As always, any pointers and tips thankfully accepted!!

MySQL Installation

I installed the binary of MySQL 3.23.51 according to the recipe, I believe. However, when I attempted to start the mysql daemon it gives the message that the daemon is starting immediately followed by a timed message "mysqld ended". Checking that the daemon is not, in fact, running with mysqladmin -p ping gives error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists! ls shows the socket is there. Another look for the daemon with ps -aux |grep mysql did not show mysqld to be running. Suggestions, please. Memories of Religious Instruction lessons many decades ago seem to indicate that some people were trouble with plagues of daemons. I do not recall anyone being bothered by the absence of daemons.
