Hi, Firstly a big "Hello"! I joined up recently after conversations with MJR. I investigate the old Essex LUG but that seems to be dead and buried, so I was thinking of setting up a Chelmsford LUG (comedy name yet to be thought up) as I live near there (Gt. Waltham, grew up in Ford End, country boy really;) and am buying there soon. I'm having a meeting on Thursday at D-Place in Chelmsford from 6pm for the A12 business networking club which I run on Ecademy - feel free to join the online discussions/come along to the meeting at: http://www.open4.org/joinA12club (it's free) One of the other members has just started up a local mag "Parklife" being delivered to 10,000 residents of the new, mainly commuter estates of Chelmsford. We're having a feature on the club next month and organising a charity event for the summer, so I posted to the Linux Solution Providers list asking about installfests, and now I'm here. So, pointers please to setting a LUG up, offers of advice or help for the summer event - prob more of a demonstration of different systems (have MDK10 on my Tosh M30-604 laptop working /nearly/ fully now which looks good and impresses people), any other advice welcome. Excellent turn-out - AFAIR 14 people turned up, some for the first time, some from the first meeting five years ago. Lovely weather so we sat in the garden and made lots of noise. Many books were given away (thanks Steve aka 'brodders'), loads of old but useful kit was given away or sold very cheaply (thanks Laurie). Everyone seemed to have a great time and when I left at about half six it was still going. Adam, Bear, BJ, Brett, brodders, Doug (who needs some help with samba, slackware and XP), Eli (pronounced 'Ellie') James and Kaz (sp?) Jonathan 'noodles', Kirsten, Laurie, Mark, Syd. With regards to the webcam.... I have a Labtec USB webcam that costs 20 quid from PC world etc. After a little googling I managed to download a driver for a Logitech webcam which is basically the same. I can get a stream from the camera now using gmplayer, and camorama. But apart from that it is pretty useless in Linux. I want a plugin for Gaim to play with MSN video messenging.... Rob

Newbie and upgrade of RH7.2

Hi Folks, I'm a newbie to ALUG, and relatively new to Linux too, so excuse me if this is a trivial question. I web develop for a research charity in Thetford, and have inherited a legacy linux server which handles all our online data collection (Java etc. connected to Oracle on Unix). However, we face a bit of a problem in that we run Oracle 9i Application Server on Red Hat 7.2. When some small things went wrong (or at least we could not explain), we approached Oracle for support, only to be told that they had stopped supporting this combination. As we have Oracle Support for other elements, we decided that it would be worth it upgrading the Red Hat to RH Enterprise Linux ES (small to medium servers). This way we will get two types of support. Question: How easy is it to upgrade (or migrate) to this new version? Will it involve wiping drive and starting afresh? Will we need to re-install 9iAS and all our web apps? Or is it really easy and I'm getting flustered over nothing? Hope someone can provide some opinions/feedback. Cheers Iain

Kernel 2.6 rpm

Hi I cannot download Kernel 2.6 as it is too big for my two hour cut off on my isp.(no resume). I have downloaded Kernel 2.6 RPM from Suse on a spare machine and everything seemed to work O.K. Yast autodetected my hardware and reconfigured it, every thing worked except the sound, although it reconised the soundcards I tried it was unable to configure them, it suggested the IRQ may be wrong. iptables & logs

Morning, I'm trying to track down an problem with my firewall (I'm trying to set up MASQ properly) and would like to log all traffic going through the firewall, whether it's dropped or not. Can someone tell me the appropriate command please? Secondly, I know it's simple, but I'll be damned if I can remember/find out how to do it. All the log entries from my firewall are going into /var/log/messages, but how can I set the 'puter up to put them in a file called /var/log/firewall? All the log entries start with 'FIREWALL'. cheers, BenE

USB webcams

Me and Charles Garcia-Tobin (also on this list) were wasting a Sunday afternoon mucking about with Gnome Meeting last weekend. It is mostly working quite well as far as Audio and Text go, but we now need to both get affordable USB webcams to complete the picture. Any other ALUG'ers out there running USB webcams on Linux ?, which ones have good compatability, we are not over concerned with performance (this is for Gnome Meeting after all) but something that is nice and easy to get working and currently available would be good. I did have a really nice 3Com Office Connect camera. But when I tried it a year ago it was no fun getting it to play with Linux (and anyway it seems to have gone missing now)

Difficulty using procmail

I'm trying to filter out the tidal wave of spam, now reaching 100 a day on one mailbox, by using bogofilter as part of a procmail filter. My mailserver is postfix, set to invoke procmail by having main.cf contain the line mailbox_command /usr/bin/procmail I set up /etc/procmailrc to contain the following: -------------------------------------------------------------------- # Pass all mail through bogofilter :0fw | bogofilter -u -e -p # If bogofilter failed, return the mail to the queue. # The MTA will retry to deliver it later. :0e { EXITCODE=75 HOST } # File the mail to "spam-bogofilter" if it's spam. :0: * ^X-Bogosity: Yes, tests=bogofilter spam-bogofilter -------------------------------------------------------------------- which according to the bogofilter manual should send all spam to "spam-bogofilter". But it doesn't. The messages get delivered to the user's mailbox without spam-bogofilter ever getting written. The messages themselves contain the X-Bogosity headers and are correctly classified as being spam or not, so it appears either the last rule isn't being reached or isn't operating correctly. I find the procmail syntax pretty impenetrable; can anyone help deduce what's going wrong? -- GT

Hi there, My name is Robert Frusher and have joined the mailing list, I live in King's Lynn Norfolk, presently driving buses for a living... I'm probably not quite a newbie of Linux as I have been using it on and off for about five years. Have had many problems and solved some of them. I was pointed to the group and mailing list by Nick, from Home and Business computing in Lynn. I use both Windows XP and Slackware Linux, the latter more often than not because of what I use my computer for - Web, Email, Software Development and Databases... Norwich sunday meetings - another suggestion

A couple of people have said that they can book a room at UEA, which has always been a popular choice of venue. Since the upcoming 'anniversary' get-together at the start of May has already been discussed and arranged, and since it seems best to keep that as more of a social than a technical event, I suggest that we have another sunday meet in Norwich, at UEA, to bring kit along etc, farly soon. I propose the last w/e in June, i.e sunday 28th June. Does this clash with any other planned events, local or national? As always, comments welcome especially anyone who can say that they intend to be there. Syd

Gentoo 2004.0 LiveCD install

I was so impressed with Gentoo 1.4 that I decided to upgrade and bought the 2CD set of 2004.0, but despite what it says in the install guide such as "if you don't have a working network connection, you have to install a portage snapshot provided by one of or liveCDs" -I did :-) As I want to start at Stage1 I need to run the bootstrap script, but I get to that point the install fails as emerge tries to download another version of portage from the Gentoo Mirrors. I've tried the Gentoo forums, but there does not seem to be much about this, other than 'use a network connection' or 'use Stage3'. As the documentation says that it can be done (although its not the default method) then I assume that they know what they're saying. Is there a way I can stop emerge doing this, or at least show it where I've put the sources? Thanks again Glen

Just installed Debian

Dear ALUG, I've recently installed Debian "testing" on my laptop over the Internet. Its all very shinny and nice (with kernel 2.6, KDE 3.1.5 etc.) and I've almost got everything I want working. There are one or two things that I hope someone might be able to help with though: 1) When the system boots it attempts to connect to the network through eth0. This is fine when I'm on campus and plugged into the network, but when I'm at home it adds about a minute onto the bootup time and achieves nothing (I've not network at home). Is there a way of making this optional at bootup? 2) One of the packages didn't configure properly at installation time: noflushd. I tried # dpkg-reconfigure noflushd and got this: debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Kde debconf: (Can't locate Qt.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.3 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.3 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Kde/Wizard.pm line 7.) debconf: falling back to frontend: Dialog /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: noflushd is broken or not fully installed Any ideas what might be wrong? ISDN Woes on Mandrake

Hi, Ive been trying to get mandrake to work with the ISDN adapter (which drivers come in the kernal, and it works so that dont seem the problme). The problme appears to be the mandrake 10 front end for ISDN is missing (well incomplete) ive treid googling for an alternate, but i cant seem to find one that works. so what im asking is, does any one know if there is any alternate front ends for ISDN or any easy (as im a bit new at this) work rounds? yours S Hammond PS, IIRC the windows fonts are free to be redistributed so there is no problme copying them to linux (no matter how much microsoft hates you for doing it) actually iirc there was a source forge project dedicated to it, who MS had a go at but couldnt legal do any thing about it. _________________________________________________________________ Tired of 56k? Strange Firefox problem

As the subject says, this is a strange one... From what I can tell, it appears that firefox might be throttling my download speed. I've tried downloading from a number of different places and the speed never gets above 4kbs, which since I'm on ADSL (finally) is a bit slow. Judging from the amount downloaded (ie. 700 k in a couple of minutes), it's reporting the speed accurately (or thereabouts) and everything else I do happens at the speed I would expect it (apt-getting 90mb's of data in half an hour or so etc.). Is it my imagination? Have all the servers I've tried to download from recently just been slow? Or is there some sort of option I need to set somewhere ;) Anyone? Please? I'm using sarge (albeit with a freshly downloaded gimp 2.0, but I doubt that will make a difference). Cheers, BenE

FTP help please!

Until recently (a few days ago) I have been happily uploading via FTP to my hosted web site. Suddenly I find I can start an upload but every attempt ends with 'waiting for transfer to complete' which it never does. I have tried a number of different FTP applications, both GUI and command line, to no avail. I have also tried uploading to the small amount of web space that my ISP provides with the same result which I think rules out a problem on my hosting server. I can upload to my hosted site if I use a modem instead of the router which seems to indicate that the problem may be within the router/firewall. However, as far as I can see, nothing in the router firewall has changed. It is set to allow anything out and to block everything coming in unless it's a 'reply' to a connection instigated by my computer. That has always worked in the past. ALUG will be five on the 2nd May 2004! To mark the occasion a 'special' sunday afternoon get-together will take place at 2pm that day at the 'City Gate', Dereham Road. As well as being spacious and comfortable, the City Gate also do a wide range of food in a restaurant area (i.e it should be a cut above usual 'pub grub') so there is the possibility of having a meal as well - I'll leave that for discussion. There is ample parking nearby, including possible free parking on the forecourt of a wine warehouse next to the pub or on side roads off Dereham Road. There is also Pay-and-Display parking on the other side of the ring road off St Swithin's road. Warning to SuSE 9.0 users

Over the last couple of days YOU has popped up with a update recommendation to kernel 2.4.21-202. I did this about two hours ago and I have only just got my machine back. As usual (same as all the other times I have let YOU update the kernel) I simply let YaST get on with downloading and installing the kernel. Reboot when it's finished and then reinstall my Nvidia drivers if X won't start. But this time the kernel would fail to uncompress at the start of the boot, now I know that YOU verifies packages for corruption before installing them so I guessed that SuSE had released a borked kernel or something was upsetting the boot loader (in my case Lilo) After mucking about in a recovery boot (and installing the kernel on the original media to get my machine back) I think it may be something to do with me running Lilo rather than what I think is the SuSE default of grub. I have found that if I run the new update and then run lilo as root to get it to reread it's config file then all appears to be fine. So a warning to any SuSE users out there if you use lilo then make sure to run it before rebooting after the update. Gahhh, not the best way to spend a sunny Saturday morning !

Here's a Perl of a problem

I have a Perl script, wot I wrote (I'm no Perl expert), which I have been using successfully for some time. One part of it downloads a log in 'resume' mode i.e it downloads only the new part and appends it to the existing log. Just recently it has downloaded the new part of the log but it then overwrites the existing file with just the new bit although the script has not been changed??? FTP problem - update

I have updated the firmware in my router and I can now do FTP uploads from my laptop but still not from my desktop. My laptop is running Debian Stable but my desktop runs Debian Testing/Sarge. Adding to kdm "Session Type" list

I have just installed IceWM on my system and like it. I can run IceWM ok if I make /etc/X11/xinitrc a symbolic link to xinitrc.icewm and use startx however I would prefer to run kdm and have IceWM appear in the "Session Type" list on the kdm login screen. Does anyone know how to add IceWM to this "Session Type" list? Thanks, Ian.

Definitely time for a holiday...) --------------- The monthly Norwich 'second thursday' evening social meet will take place this week, 8th April from 8 pm at the City Gate, Dereham Road. There may or may not be a penguin on the table :-) === directions etc === The City Gate pub is just off the inner ring road at the junction of Grapes Hill and Barn Road. Dereham Road is the A1074 - take the Costessey junction on the A47 if coming from west of Norwich. Otherwise, when going clockwise around the inner ring road, Dereham road is the left turn at the traffic lights at the bottom of Grapes Hill (but see parking info below). There is a very large Cane Furniture shop on the corner and this is probably the best landmark from either direction. The pub, which has a large glass frontage (see link to picture above), is next to the cane furniture shop. There is ample parking nearby, including possible free parking on the forecourt of a wine warehouse next to the pub or on side roads off Dereham Road. There is also Pay-and-Display parking ( £1.40 for the evening) on the other side of the ring road off St Swithin's road. Coming down Grapes Hill turn right at the lights (St Benedict's Street) and then left into the entrance to the car park which is behind Toys-R-Us. Syd

Next Norwich week-end meeting - new proposal

Short version: Not a lot of interest expressed even from the regulars, although that does not necessarily mean that no-one is interested :-0 BUT... is it worth spending money on hiring a room if few people are likely to be there? If we cannot get a free room at UEA for an ALUG 5th Birthday Bash, how about meeting up at the City Gate instead, maybe for meal during or afterwards, first w/e in May? ---------------------------------- Long Version: Recently I asked for feedback on when the next Norwich w/e meeting should be held because the planned meeting is a week before ALUG's fifth anniversary and a few people had suggested that this should be marked. I have had three responses. Two preferred the first w/e in May (the 'birthday' w/e but also a bank holiday w/e) and one had no preference. So call it three for May. Two preferred the idea of a saturday meeting at UEA if it could be arranged and one preferred a sunday meeting. In retrospect my 'survey' should have distinguished between 'saturday' preference and 'UEA' preference. I suspect people were choosing UEA rather than 'saturday'. I have no way of knowing if the other people who often come to w/e meetings but did not respond have no preference or are simply uninterested :-) ------- Anyway, the preference from the tiny and possibly-unrepresentative sample is for a saturday meeting at the UEA on the first w/e in May i.e. May 1st. If a free room can be booked at UEA then this can go ahead. Otherwise... well, it may be a bit of a problem. I will not be in Norwich that w/e but I can change the Billy Bluelight booking. I don't have time to search for an alternative. I'm concerned that very few people will turn up again and it is an expensive place if very few people attend. Maybe an alternative, if a booking at UEA does not happen, would be to have a saturday or sunday birthday meet at the City Gate instead on May 1st or 2nd? Maybe meet up for a meal? OK, so it's not a place to take kit but is that so important this time? That actually sounds like more fun to me than the Billy Bluelight or even UEA. I'll be sorry to miss it. If it works we can do it more often and keep a room-booked meeting for when there really is some activity worth booking a room for, such as a talk, demo etc. And there is always Syleham which is a great place for kit-bringing meetings: tables, chairs, beer, tea and coffee plus it's warm, inviting and (dah-dah!) free as well. So - what do you say??? City Gate on the Bank Holiday w/e in May? ------------- The other thing is that I will be away for the next couple of weeks and really want to get this settled asap. I will (fingers crossed and keep the string pulled tight) have email though. Finally, I think we have to question if the old-style unplanned bring-kit meetings are really fulfilling a need, at least in Norwich now there are regular monthly evening meets for face-to-face contacts. Most people seem to get the general tech support they need via the list. Just a thought Syd

Thanks for your clues, Steve. I do have those lines in /etc/ntp.conf. I tried using ntpq to look at the debugging info (as per the HTML docs) and it seemed to be saying that the the reason for failure was due to the main PC being too high a stratum at stratum=15, despite those lines in the config file. Also the 'flash' variable was reading 20, which, when decoded using another of the docs, merely said "wind the clock up"....!! Is this going to be another CUPS horror-story? Cheers, Gerald.

I dont think it fair saying that linux has a long way to go for non technicle endusers, i am for all practicle purposes a newbie to linux, what i have found is that if i want to change any thing or customise any thing (well at least at my level) you can and its easyer than windows by far. NTP between local PCs

I'm trying to get two networked Linux boxes to show the same time in X by using ntp. I'm running ntpd on the main one and I've added the IP address of the secondary one to /etc/ntp.conf. However, using ntpdate doesn't set the secondary PC's clock to agree with the main PC, because ntpdate complains that the main PC is too high a stratum. Does anyone know how to get over this. I suspect that the main problem is to do with the main PC not being connected to a kosher ntp server at the time (since there's no internet connection) but it seems that it ought to be possible to sync the two machines' clocks nonetheless. When there IS an internet connection, the main PC uses ntp quite happily to adjust its clock to whatever external server I select, but, even then, the secondary box won't sync to the main one. I've read through all the HTML documentation that comes with ntp in the Slackware 9.1 distribution, but no joy. Any clues, please, anyone? Gerald.

DVD-R questions

I was kindly given a Pioneer DVD A-04 today. Getting a bit old now, but it does (or should do) the job. I have two slight problems though. The drive is up and burning, but k3b on SuSE 9.0 moans that if I want to use Disk at Once mode I need to either find a copy of cdrdao that supports ATAPI writers or start using ide-scsi. I have never had to use ide-scsi before as I have always had SCSI writers, I tried the obvious adding hdc=ide-scsi bit to Lilo (as a guess) but it just resulted in the kernel complaining that it couldn't enable DMA for HDC. After a boot cdrecord --scanbus couldn't see it so I guess that didn't work out so well. How do I enable ide-scsi for this drive. Also, This drive has had a firmware update to enable it to write at 2x to the new style media , but k3b (or whatever tools it uses under the GUI) has firmly decided that this drive is a 1x drive. Any ideas how I change this or force the issue. Funilly enough it also missreports the maximum speed of my Yamaha SCSI drive as 6x when cdrecord is quite happy running it at it's full speed of 8x Side note, Anybody can make me a silly offer for my ageing (but still pretty good) external SCSI writer (complete with Ultra2 lead) even if the drive is a bit slow, the external case may be handy for a faster drive.

Wanted - analogue clock with date for X

I have just migrated my work desktop from running natively on a Sun Spark workstation to running via an X server on a PC. After a week or so of using and tuning it I have most of the wrinkles out of it now but there's one remaining minor niggle. I run the (very) old Sun OpenWindows 'clock' on my desktop as it provides an analogue clock display *and* the date in a nice written format (e.g. it says "Fri Mar 26" at the moment). However it's somewhat imperfect when run on this PC X server, in particular the dots marking the hours are missing. Can anyone recommend an X clock utility that has an analogue clock face and the date? Alsa in 2.6.x

This may be a wild stab in the dark, but I'm hoping someone out there has this one resolved already... Bought Unreal Tournament 2004. The demo worked nicely under kernel 2.6.4. Installed the retail version, and the following occurs: bash-2.05b$ /usr/local/ut2004/ut2004 open /dev/[sound/]dsp: No such device I've searched google without much luck. The Linux Games FAQ at icculus.org/lgfaq/ mentions some alternate drivers to be set as environment variables, which I see make no difference. I've compiled alsa in, with oss compatibility. The compatibility modules are indeed loaded. Other applications are giving sound fine, including the UT2004 demo. Most frustrating! Can anyone help? Thanks, James Green

Mandrake / automake version

Hi. I'm trying to build ardour from CVS on Mandrake 10 community. When I run autogen.sh I get a message telling me I need automake >=1.5 (Mandrake uses 1.4 as standard). I tried changing the symlinks for aclocal and automake in /etc/alternatives/ to the 1.7 versions and running aclocal but I got a message saying aclocal: configure.ac: 4: macro `AM_BUILD_ENVIRONMENT' not found in library Can anyone explain what I need to do to use a later version of automake? Thanks for any help.

Going ALSA-only with full mixing

On Monday's IRC, we discussed a little bit about how to get ALSA mixing sounds, but I'm not sure anyone got it working until after the meeting, so here's a summary and intro for those who missed it. Usually, only one thing opens the sound device at once and that's a pain. Different workarounds (esd, arts) exist, but it's surely better to do this in the sound driver. ALSA supports hardware mixing on some cards and is included in 2.6 kernels. Look at the Soundcard Martrix on http://www.alsa-project.org/ and see if your card has a (4) which means hardware mixing supported. If you have hardware mixing, using the right ALSA drivers is probably all you need to do. I think using ALSA-enabled programs is best, which usually just means installing the right package or compiling with the right options. For applications using the old /dev/dsp device, I think the module snd-pcm-oss should cope with it. I've not tested that and would like to hear what you find. If you don't have hardware mixing, then you need to enable the dmix plugin by editing a config file. Instructions are on http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/asoundrc.php3#softmix but you probably want hw:0,0 instead of the 1,0 in the example. My main machine doesn't do hardware mixing, so I did this. In my experience, this *will* highlight any misconfigurations or weaknesses in your sound setups, which is why it's not done by default for cards that can't do hardware mixing. I found that sounds played out with horrible clicks, but I had a minor option for my card incorrect in modutils.conf. When I put that right, it worked fine. The XMMS sound player complained until I increased the two _size options in the config file. Also, XMMS needed to be told to use user-defined "default" output instead of the detected card and not use "mmap mode". I don't know exactly what all that does (although I could guess), but trial-and-error is wonderful, isn't it? Now, what about OSS-only programs? The OSS emulation doesn't cope for software mixing, as far as I can tell. While sound is playing via ALSA, I get "device busy" from things trying to use /dev/dsp. Running them through aoss (from the alsa-oss package) works. Advanced power management

Hi there I am trying to use APM on my home server so that its in standby all the time except when it has to perform its server duties. I think the machine is ACPI compliant, but the APM interface seemed simpler. Anyway when the machine has just booted, and I do an apm -S (in runlevel 5 full X) it goes into standby as you'd expect and everything is dandy. The I wake it up with some keyboard input say and again everything is cool, however after this first slumber if I try apm -S the machine will go to sleep and wake up instantly every time. Apmd shows the following: Mar 19 09:45:05 bongtime apmd[1607]: Event 0x0009: User System Standby Request Mar 19 09:45:06 bongtime apmd[1607]: User Standby Mar 19 09:45:09 bongtime apmd[1607]: Event 0x000b: System Standby Resume Mar 19 09:45:09 bongtime apmd_proxy[6395]: resume standby Mar 19 09:45:10 bongtime apmd[1607]: Standby Resume after 00:00:04 (-1% unknown) AC power As you can see it managed to sleep for 3 seconds before Event b woke it up. Does anybody now a way round this? Alternatively does anybody know how to put the network card and sound card to sleep, I can do hard drives with hdparm, the display with xset. Adding those two would more or less do decent standby mode. Cheers Charles
