SAMBA workstation how-to anyone?

I've got some rare free time coming up and as I've been doing some experimenting recently on using linux workstations in a Windows AD environemnt I've decided to have a go at writing a how-to. I couldn't find anything specifically targeted at workstations so I'd like to write a document that would allow you to set up a Linux workstation to log into a windows ad domain to access files and printers in an automated as possible way. Anyone in Alug want to help, either testing the how-to or contributing? I'll be starting work on it w/c 26th July.

Silly question No. 1 (Mail servers)

My ADSL comes with a fixed IP address and I gather that, among other things, it would enable me to run my own mail server. After reading my ISP's instructions about running an SMTP mail server, in double-dutch of course ("A" records ???), it all sounds a little daunting. I already run Postfix locally if that has any bearing on the subject and I don't, as far as I know, run a DNS server locally. What advantages would this give? Alcatel also have some blackbox drivers that I am using on this machine, With at least the alcatel you are out of luck with SuSE 9.1 as they don't seem to build against a 2.6 kernel, with SuSE 9 they are already packaged with the kernel (although they are in need of some tweaking to get working). Post back with the results from usbview and I'll see what I can come up with. To be honest though none of those external ADSL modems are worth the hassle, buy a cheap ADSL router.

YDL newbie

Just saying hello. I'm mainly an OSX user, but I've managed to get one of an old world powermac 9600 running with Yellowdog on it. 'Twas an experience, what with the Anaconda happily installing onto a second hard drive attached to a PCI scsi card - but not booting from it, until it was attached to the second SCSI bus on the motherboard. And the video card doesn't seem to be supported. And neither is the processor upgrade card. Little steps... I'm also attempting to build a mail server at work (my first experience of intel iron - damn those things run hot) using SuSe 8.2. And failing so far.

Two Questions

1. Was the EASF gathering a useful/informative/interesting experience, I was tempted, however having gone out early with Alison to my daughters house I got back at lunch time to read my email with a visit already planned for the afternoon. 2. Partitions, I have used, up to now, a boot, root, usr, var, home and archive partitions, (the latter mounted with both the main and the spare/extra installations. I am now considering rearranging my hard disks and having used a partition consisting of only /root and seen no disadvantage, (other than fsck takes longer), can see no real reason for the multi partition installation. ALUG and the Empty Lands

ALUG seems, from the map published in 'Linux Format', to be bounded by Peterborough, Northants, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire (East), North London, and Southend-on-Sea LUG's, Cambridge LUG perhaps should be regarded as an Enclave within, but not part of ALUG. This leaves a huge chunk between the main activity centres of Norwich, North Suffolk and West Suffolk, (Syleham and Elmswell), and the occasional meetings in Ely and Kings Lynn, a seemingly 'Empty Land' devoid of LUG's or support for those who may have an interest in GNU/Linux. I seem to remember that there was a member in Ipswich trying top promote meetings/activities, but that still would seem to leave the areas around Colchester and Chelmsford without the benefit of our, or indeed their own LUG. Perhaps with the reawakened interest in activities at LUG meetings, we should also be looking to offer support to the Southern, 'unlugged' area of the East of England. (East Anglia being, if I recall correctly, comprised of Norfolk, Suffolk and parts of, or most of, Cambridgeshire). 'Linux Format' in the July issue sought to encourage more use of their LUG page/s, perhaps there is an opportunity here to 'evangelise' in Essex. there being no formal structure to ALUG, I am prepared to try my hand at promoting some activity in that area, however I do not travel far or well, so before I commit myself to an essay into print I would like to know if there are members on the Southern fringe willing to act as 'missionaries' to Essex, either to expand ALUG or to set up ELUG. -- John Seago Linux User #219566 (http://counter.li.org)

OK. I understand that all components are relatively the same, but was surprised in the boot time. I did turn off the DHCP detection, but it still seemed to be taking much longer to boot. Does anyone know how big the Suse kernel is? I know the slack 10.0 one I am presently using is around 1.17MB which I reckon is pretty slim. I am thinking that the 2.6 kernel with Suse is overloaded... along with their X. For instance my Aitpek tablet worked on Suse, but I would have to recompile stuff to get it going on Slack. I tried Suse at my Brother in laws uni last year, and thought exactly the same thing... very sluggish... that was an AMD 2100 or something of that calibre. Do SUSe compile KDE for 686 or lower? optimisations... I have 256MB of memory which is fine for Slack, even with Apache,mysql,cups,alsa being run at boot, this adds about 2 secs of boot time for me... Rob

Meetings, Talks, Demonstrations and Kit

Right, here goes nothing... We've never really had a good result as far as talks/demonstrations run, there's either generally not the turnout, or the interest in the talks, or enough spare time in the world. What I'd like to see, sometime, (and this goes doubly for the lurkers on the list) is some suggestions for talks, what you want to learn about, etc. It'd be good to see more of the hundreds of subscribers to the list turn up to meetings, if only to say hello. Is the problem that the meetings are on the wrong days? or in the wrong places? I'm sure there are many of us willing to travel to other places if there's a meeting held there. Basically, I think what I'm trying to say is this: * We can't do talks without topics * We can't do talks without people interested in the talk (i.e. turning up to said talks) * ALUG is a community, we have no real "leadership", the decisions to do things are made by the members. So, maybe it's time to find out what people want out of the group? Do we want a full from scratch to desktop linux install demonstration? If so, which distribution? Certainly we have quite a few debian developers in the group, maybe we should go right through an install from the beginning to having X running, with KDE/Gnome/XFCE4? Do we want a demonstration on reuse of old kit for small servers, samba, LDAP, HTTP, FTP, etc? How about someone talking on how to give talks, maybe that'd be useful? Maybe demonstrations of what other Free operating systems can do? Do people want to know about specific topics, like 3d, DVB, graphics, DTP, Office applications? Without a starting point we'll never get any talks written. Do we actually want talks, or a quick guide on the website for how things work? should we be using the ALUG wiki more? should there be more technical documentation/recommendations available from the site? Maybe we should start with a set of subjects, perhaps as part of the ALUG wiki, and go from there? Thoughts, suggestions, and anything else to the list. :) Thanks, -- Brett Parker

According to an FFII press release, the Dutch Parliament yesterday voted to change its Minister's vote, which was in favor, to an abstension. This is an unprecidented move and a great coup for those fighting against software patents, never before has a country reversed a vote in this manner. While this is not sufficient to reverse the decision of the Council of Ministers, it does pave the way for other countries, many of which were pressured into an affirmative vote, to do the same. Now is the time for citizens of the EU to put pressure on their national governments to follow the Dutch lead. Anarchist Bookfair report / Linux propaganda

Hi. Sorry for delay in sending this, I've been away. To be honest I'm only getting around to it now in response to MJ Ray's welcome prompting off the list (cheers MJ). I took some Alug / Linux stuff to the Anarchist Bookfair on June 12th. I was helping out on a stall that was already shared between two other organisations, so the Linux bit was constrained to a small corner of a small desk. I brought a box of Knoppix CDs and a couple of leaflets. I had a couple of chats about Linuxy things but most people seemed more interested in the struggles of indigenous West Papuans and the like (probably quite rightly). Anyway, I gave away about 15 CDs and a few dozen leaflets so it was certainly worth doing, especially as I was going to be there anyway. You can see the stuff I distributed at http://joebutton.co.uk/alug/ if you're interested - there's the Knoppix wallets, an Alug leaflet and an intro to Gnu/Linux aimed at non-geeks. I did the latter two very late the night before the bookfair, hence the slight incoherence. Constructive criticism is welcome of course, and anyone's welcome to do whatever they want with the stuff at the above url. I should probably work out what the appropriate licence would be but it's gone midnight and I have to be up early tomorrow so consider them in the public domain. DemosWanted - 8. Upgrading to and using kernel 2.6 in Debian

I use Debian and have done this so I'd be happy to talk about how easy/dificult it was and the kludges I had to do to get it working. But I'm sure there's others on the list who have also. Slackware vs Mandrake boot times

There has been some recent discussion about how much faster Slackware seems to boot than other 'mainstream' distros. So I have installed Slack 9.1 alongside my current Mandrake 9.2 and compared boot times. This is on a Dell 2650 laptop with 384M RAM. Boot to Login: Slackware 45 secs Mandrake 52 secs Note Mandrake has more services running e.g. CUPS and kudzu Login to GUI up: Slackware 25 secs Mandrake 40 secs The main difference here is that Mandrake runs the NVidia driver which adds about 10 seconds. Overall I conclude there is very little difference between them. If you subtract the 10 secs for NVidia from the Mandrake figures then the totals are: Slackware 70 secs Mandrake 80 secs Ian

Spare/Loan Kit

Can I ask anyone who has kit they are willing to loan for the purposes of demos etc. to add it to the "Kit Available" section of the "DemosOfferedDemosWanted" wiki page? <http://www.alug.org.uk/contrib/?DemosOfferedDemosWanted> (by kit i'd also include cables, multiway mains adaptoers, extension leads, etc) That way anyone who wants to organise something can see what's available. At the moment anything loaned for a demo is implicitly at your own risk but should the group imdemnify people loaning kit in some way? and if so how? (short term insurance?) Also, in addition to H/W, does anyone have any whiteboards, flipcharts, pens, projects, etc. we can borrow for the purpose of running a demo? if so please add them to the list. Cheers :o) Keith

Suse 9.1 disappointment

Not really a question, but a little insight. I am an avid Slackware Linux user, but on seeing Suse 9.1 available for download I thought I would give it a go. The install is flawless, with its auto-configuration, although I see nothing wrong with Slackwares curses install. A little while later it was installed. I couldnt get grub boot loader to play nicely with XP so it went in the MBR. I reboot and this is the disappointment... it is REALLY slow, granted nice, but nothing really new. I have a pretty good spec machine and Slack flies compared with Suse. DMA was on but it just seemed to take forever to boot, and sluggish when it gets there. Do you reckon it was the new kernel? I tried 2.6 with Slack and it seemed even faster. SO on seeing 10.0 Slackware out I got rid of Suse, and am back at home. Rob

It's at release 1.93.3, a developer release on the way to a stable 2.0 version, but it's in very good shape.

dpkg-dist error on installing postgresql

Hi, I'm having problems installing postgresql when it gets to the post-installation script, output is below. ducati:/etc/init.d# apt-get install postgresql Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done postgresql is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 20 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used. Setting up postgresql (7.4.2-4) ... mv: cannot stat `/etc/init.d/postgresql.dpkg-dist': No such file or directory dpkg: error processing postgresql (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: postgresql E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) Does anyone know what could be going on here? UEA Meeting on 27th June.

Not a huge turnout - only 1 person who doesn't normally come to the 2nd Thursday Norwich meets. We wondered if this might be due to it being outside UEA term time, but then there's not usually a large turnout of UEA undergrads at any time, is there? Attendees were: Eli (who kindly organised it), James + Kaz, Ashley, Brett, Adam, Kirsten, me. Discussion topics included MiniITX boards and rackmounts, interrupts on highly pipelined CPUs, change giving algorithms for soft drinks machines, the annoyance factor of people who blindly suggest Cisco for all networking bits, networking problems we have known, Nethack vs Angband, DVB (ie Freeview and the like) and Brett's car. There were a couple of laptops present (that didn't even get turned on), but no other kit - I presume all the people who've been wanting kit meets in Norwich where unable to make it? Those present thought that a nice beer garden would have made a more suitable venue given the lack of kit, at least until it started raining. As UEA term time is over it was thought that we should take the Norwich Internet Cafe up on their very kind offer of a venue for the next Sunday meet. We don't seem to have any more meets organised for the rest of the year though, except the regular social meets? J. -- Game over, boys! Linux Laptop

I don't usually post stuff I'm trying to sell to the list, but I remember a few conversations a while ago regarding cheap Linux Laptops I'm selling my dedicated Linux laptop as VMware on my main one does 99.9% of what I need. It's a Dell Latitude C800 currently running SuSE 9.1 with almost everything working, the modem and suspend/resume have issues but only since moving to a 2.6 kernel. Power management, 3D, thermal control and the CPU Throttle (will go down to 700MHZ when under a light load if on batteries) all tested. Feels pretty snappy and comfortable on KDE, the 1400x1024 screen helps, would be even better with a boost to the ram. It's an 850Mhz PIII with 256MB Ram (a slot is free to add more) ATI M4 with 16MB of Dedicated video memory (this is interchangeable with other ATI and Nvidia daughterboards, ones from the Inspiron 8000 also fit) 10GB HDD (cheap to fit a larger one) CDROM and Floppy Fitted with the 1400x1024 display, no dead pixels and nice and bright. Has all the usual ports. USB, Firewire, serial, parallel, VGA, PS2, 100baseT Ethernet, Modem (not working in Linux, but I haven't tried very hard, google says it's possible) and two PCMCIA slots. Comes with the Dell case, Charger and Modem lead, Windows 2000 OEM license (no media) CD-R with the Dell drivers on, CD-R with SuSE 9.1 personal. Good condition overall, couple of small marks here and there. Debugging Gnome Problems

After running apt-get update on my Debian install last night (actually I used apt-zip but it's the same thing) I now find that gnome 2.4 won't start (it was working fine before). dmesg (or alt-f9) doesn't seem to show anything untoward except for some gconfd messages saying gnome is shutting down. Does anyone know if/where gnome keeps its own run logs so I can get a clue why it's throwing a wobbler? I tried the www.gnome.org site but it's definitely an information overload situation when looking for clues to this. Google wasn't much help either. I'm going to try and get along to this one. If it's of interest I have a copy of Knoppix 3.4 (4-May-04 version) that I will bring along if anyone wants a copy. It's the one with the 2.6 kernel (there's also a 17-May-04 version but I haven't got round to downloading that yet). Logo idea

As you may know, the original logo artwork went missing a while ago and we've been using a hasty mockup since. Keith has produced some redesigns which have been used on stickers etc. I've just had an idea for a cool logo: Tux, wearing armour, riding an armoured GNU, carrying a pennant that says GNU/Linux. Suse disappointment...

Not really a question, but a little insight. I am an avid Slackware Linux user, but on seeing Suse 9.1 available for download I thought I would give it a go. The install is flawless, with its auto-configuration, although I see nothing wrong with Slackwares curses install. A little while later it was installed. I couldnt get grub boot loader to play nicely with XP so it went in the MBR. I reboot and this is the disappointment... it is REALLY slow, granted nice, but nothing really new. I have a pretty good spec machine and Slack flies compared with Suse. DMA was on but it just seemed to take forever to boot, and sluggish when it gets there. Do you reckon it was the new kernel? I tried 2.6 with Slack and it seemed even faster. SO on seeing 10.0 Slackware out I got rid of Suse, and am back at home. Rob

USB camera problem

I have two SuSE 9.1 setups; one on a desktop and the other a laptop. The laptop can see my Canon IXUS camera; the desktop can't, though it used to be able to last week on 9.0 before I installed the new version of the OS. USB printer is fine. Does anyone know how to debug this part of the system? -- GT

Unload the nvidia module (it's never actually been loaded for me, but just in case) - enter rmmod nvidia <> 4. cd to directory that contains nvidia installer and enter sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run This will start the text-based install routine. Remote Calendar

I'm looking for a way of keeping an up to date calendar on my Debian/Apache/PHP/MySQL web server which I can view and edit from Linux, Windows and Mac client machines over the Internet if possible. I quite like the idea of using the Mozilla Sunbird Calendar and setting up a WebDav server on Apache. Does anyone have experience of this? Google found me a tutorial here http://www.twilight-systems.com/flacco/mozcal/mozcal-webdav.html As a bonus, what I'd *really* like to be able to do is sync the calendar with the one in my mobile phone so I can access it when I'm on the move. This is the bit that may be difficult because I'm not sure how to go about it. The phone I'm talking about is a WAP and Java enabled Siemens SL45i and has a built in Calendar which can be synchronised with Outlook. I don't want to use Outlook for obvious reasons but perhaps someone knows of a Java app for phones which can sync with Calendar software on the PC or preferably the calendar stored on my WebDav server? However, I'd rather not have to use the WAP on the mobile phone too often because it's expensive on my tarriff so perhaps I could sync that locally with one of the client machines? I suppose a more ideal solution would be buying a Zaurus to give me more options, but I don't have that kind of money :) Any ideas? I forgot to check the automatically delete source packages after completing the update process, and now I would like to manually delete the packages. problem installing jbuilder on SuSE 9.1

I get this output ./install_linux: line 930: file.lax: Read-only file system Can't load library "/media/cdrecorder/setup/jre/linux/lib/i386/libjava.so", because /media/cdrecorder/setup/jre/linux/lib/i386/libjava.so: symbol __libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference Could not create the Java virtual machine. when running ./install_linux which is the installer script. The strange thing is that I successfully installed this thing on SuSE 9.0 without the slightest hitch. I don't understand why it doesn't work for 9.1 Can I do something about this? Also, I have installed the javaSDK on the system but this is probably irrelevant. Cheers for any help you may be able to give. Booting multiple Linux versions

OK, so to wake up the list a bit, here's a nice simple question. I have a Slackware 9.1 system running and would like to install the (brand new!) Slackware 10.0 as well. The hard disk has a 30Gb partition with 9.1 on it and 30Gb spare on which I can install the new 10.0. So far so good. Installing the Slackware 10.0 should be fairly straightforward I think, I haven't had any big problems with previous versions. However I'm not quite sure how I get the boot menu to present me with the alternative versions. Can anyone give me any guidance. There's nothing official on this from SUSE as far as I can tell though, but it seems to be intentional! Anyone heard any more on this? Red Hat Registration & apm

Hello, can anyone help to solve 2 problems I have with red hat 9 1. I cannot register for updates. The first step (privacy statement) remains blank with the cursor showing busy. The next set of steps are filled in with the required information, but finishes with the error, problem registering user name. 2. If I use the apm command to suspend or standby, the screen shuts down then immediately turns itself back on, then the terminal window continually writes, root @ localhost root, until it is full. Then all programs do not respond,then eventually the whole screen is locked so the computer has to be turned off. Bob Jarvis. (New to Linux)

Samba quandry

Hello there I have two linux boxes running samba. Both have the same workgroup. On both machines I have user 'charles' with the same smb password. However to see each other's user shares I am asked to log in. How do I make the smb server accept the 'charles' from the remote machine as the local charles? On window shares, without domains, matching username/passwords is usually the only requirement. Cheers Charles

Debian Install 4th Attempt

I retried this morning, gave it the name 'debian.org' when asked, used tasksel(?) to select Desktop, office and not much else that I can remember, used 'advanced' for the Xserver, and then as the dog had to go to the Vets and me to the Doctor later, Alison took me to the Post Office to collect my pension and when I came home there was a screen which I 'OK'd' and lo and behold everything works! What I didn't do was anything to do with my internet connection so the problems must be caused by my giving wrong answers to those. I know the number, user name, and password for my connection to my ISP so it must be the ISO code for UK/GB and the county number. Now I know its my fault I have another go at installing and write down the questions I can't answer or seem to be getting wrong and see if I can find the right answers, I will report my success of failure. -- John Seago Linux User #219566 (http://counter.li.org)

Introduction to ALUG

Hello, Since first registering on 6th June I have been reading the flow of e-mails in order to understand how ALUG operates. I am a bit confused over the two e-mail addresses function (main@... and main-admin@...) However, I am a self taught home computer owner that has never liked how Microsoft Windows works as an O.S or as a company. I knew of Linux for some time and several months ago obtained the system by accident being free with Linuxuser & developer (redhat 9 ) I successfully installed redhat 9 and have a dual boot system with Windows XP with no conflicts. It took some time to find a modum but succeeded after buying Red Hat Linux 9 for dummies and Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed(a mighty tome). I don't know anyone who knows of linux and I have developed several problems that I cannot resolve, so need some information to enable me to rectify the problems. I have 5 grandchildren who use computers and wish to introduce them to linux O.S. Bob

This time I gave it the name debian.test and got a different set of screens and questions and got further than before, the log-in screen did not appear and as it failed I was asked if I wanted to configure X myself. I've done this X Server before so I know I got it right, however if returned a fault telling me "host name lookup failed" and would not start the X server. I do not understand why a failure in networking, particularly as there is no network, is so important. However i got further this time, and its keeping me busy, the challenge continues onwards and upwards. I tried the Ctrl + Alt +F1 and that does work, so one symptom is down to not paying attention when Mark and Adam told me how to do it. I have set /etc/hosts to the same format as my Slackware partitions but still I can get to gdm, log in and then the system hangs at "initializing system services" and after a time goes back to grey with the cursor, although I did get the KDE start-up tones whilst altering /etc/hosts from root. I also re-checked and reset xf86config, although I have set it exactly the same as the same version of X which runs my Slackware the screen image is just a tad squashed. Note please do not assume that because I can work VI enough to rewrite /etc/hosts that I can do much else from the command line. -- John Seago Linux User #219566 (http://counter.li.org)

As far as the Xserver goes, on one of my attempts the installer set it up properly, and on one of the others I did, the login screen is perfect beautifully sharp, and KDE went so far as to give me the set-up wizard before the login box on initial start up. KDE gets as far as the second Icon, (28% in the progress bar), and then stops and goes back to the grey screen with the cursor, Gnome tells me that it could not look up the internet address of the name, and to add the name to /etc/hosts. The names, I left the first as debian, not knowing what was expected, the second I made debian.experiment, the third I used the series of english philosphers.enlightenment .net, in this case thomashobbes.enlightenment.net. wwwofle also shows as failing in the, scroll past at opening. As far as I and my son-in-law can diagnose, its down to ineptitude on my part, I just can't get the hostname, networking bit right and it wont start fully. > > HTH. Backup software

I am thinking around the problem of improving my backups having had a near disaster a couple of months ago (some disk recovery software saved my bacon). The home network consists of a Linux (slackware) server machine that is on all the time and two or three Win2k desktop machines. I have an old DAT tape drive on the Linux box but I'm leaning towards using the DVD writer on my Win2k desktop machine instead. Backing up the home directories on the Linux box is easy[ish] as they are all simply below the /home directory. However trying to gather the Win2k files I need to backup as well is more messy. I can map drives either way across the network and I could quite easily move the DVD writer to the Linux box. Does anyone here have any recommendations for backup programs for this sort of scenario. What I'm particularly after is something that will have a reasonably good shot at selecting files to be backed up without me having to specify every single folder. I'm quite happy to add a few 'rogue' ones as I find them (e.g. my Palm files) but there must be soemthing that will make a half reasonable shot at finding most 'user' files. -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk)

x86-64

As mentioned before (unless the post has been eaten somewhere along the line), I am the proud owner of an AMD64. I installed debian on it and, as usual, compiled the kernel from source (it took 10 minutes, rather than the 40-50 mins it used to take). The only problem was that the bzImage was in the i386 directory and not, as I would expect, in the x86-64 directory. *slap* I just checked my .config file and I selected the wrong option on the processor type...onto my second question... I've googled for an answer to this with no luck, but how do I install the 64 bit versions of software for debian? Will apt-get automagically detect I have a 64bit processor and do it for me? Is it not as simple as that? Thanks, BenE

I have been out to my son-in law, both of us Slackware users, to discuss this problem. He tells me that as Slackware users we have been spoilt as Slackware comes with its Gateway, Name Server, Host Name, Hosts Allow, Domain name etc., etc., all ready set up. I just edit the file to alter the computer and domain names, before doing xf86config. (My computer is a stand alone machine with a modem to connect, very, very slowly to the internet). It would appear that its a problem with all, one or some of the above and I need to know the right answers when the installer asks me for decisions, it also explains the failure to get very far with its start up. I've been given some background reading homework and he advised me to ask what answers I might need. Debian Install

Those at the last meeting at Syleham will remember that I had problems installing Debian 'Woody' amongst which was the fact that some of my hardware is too modern for the version of 'X'. Today I received Debian 'Sarge' the installer seems to have changed considerably and the whole process is much simpler, however I have arrived at the graphical log-in and then having given my user name and password both KDE and Gnome go as far as, in the case of KDE the second Icon 28% and then stall. Gnome tells me that as it cannot find Debian org it can go no further and stalls. It seems that this has something to do with the hostname and the connection to the outside world. CntlF1 or CntlF2 do not get me into root, this must be something I am getting wrong on the install/configuration, any suggestions please? -- John Seago Linux User #219566 (http://counter.li.org)

Introduction

Hello, I wanted to introduce myself to the ALUG. I am currently unemployed (having been made redundant from my old job) and planning to start my own business. My objective in my venture is to promote and support the use of Linux in the small to medium sized business, particularly in east Norfolk. I have been working in IT for about 15 years, initially working in the air traffic control industry, and later in the oil pipeline survey industry. I am qualified and experience in software development, mainly C++, on Unix platforms, and more recently Win32. I have been using Linux at home and work for around 6 years (my first taste coming in the form of RedHat v3.2). Academically, I have a 1st class honours degree in computer science and have gained chartered engineer status through the BCS. In recent years I have become increasingly frustrated with company decision makers, who repeatedly ignore the benefits of Linux over other operating systems. I have found this due mainly to two things: lack of knowledge, and fear of change. I have now found myself in a position where I can do something about this problem - to actively promote Linux and increase awareness amongst local businesses, and to offer support and maintenance in order to alleviate the fear of change. My reason for contacting the ALUG in this way, really is to ensure that I am supporting the ALUG in its activities and ideas, rather than 'stepping on anyones toes'. Very strange mail problem

I'm still having this very odd mail problem. I'm subscribed to this list (and several others) from my habitual mail address of chris(a)areti.co.uk. Since about midday yesterday mailing list mail has dried up completely, I know some of the lists have had mail since then so where's it going? Other mail to chris(a)areti.co.uk is arriving OK. I'm wondering if a spam filter somewhere has become over zealous. This mail is really just a test from my new subscription to generate some traffic that I can try copying to chris(a)areti.co.uk to see if it can arrive. Cheap and cheerful printer

I have a HP 710c which has stood unused for some time, free if you want it, (I changed over to a Samsung ML1210 laser two years ago, still on the first of the oiginal toner cartridges). I don't know what happens to the ink if you don't use it for a while though. "cheap & cheerful" printer

Hi Folks (apologies for any cross-posts you may receive), I'm looking for a cheap and cheerful printer which I can take with me to other places which may not have print facilities (I don't want to subject my excellent HP Laserjet to shocks and vibrations ... !). I've come across the Lexmark Z708 inkjet, apparently available at PC World for £29.99 (in-store). Not that I like inkjets, since the cartridge price leads to high running costs in the long term (it looks as though Lexmark cartridges, even black and white, cost over $20, i.e. nearly as much as the printer in this case). However, the price is right ... ! Does anyone have any experience of using the Lexmark 708, who can a) Comment on its quality and performance b) Comment on usability with Linux? (USB connection, by the way, which should not be a problem in principle). I haven't been able to suss out from websites what printer language it uses, for instance, so don't know whether ghostscript would be able to convert PS output to drive this printer. European Elections

On Thursday we all have the chance, together with our families, friends and all those we can influence to vote in the European Election. It seems to me that if we made a concerted effort despite our own political convictions to vote UKIP we may be able to unseat the sitting Lib Dem! This will send message, very painful for the man, who will lose an income of about £75000 > £100000 and expenses, to the man, and the party, that due to their voting against our interests in the last parliament we have decided to vote against their interests in this election. This can be rammed home if he does get unseated by sending him, or the Lib Dems office an email telling them that those against Software patents worked to unseat a Candidate of the party that voted the 'wrong way'! (Sorry this isn't in the main thread) 1. This could be a perfect venue for some sunday afternoon meetings if that was OK with Lewis. Bandwidth, easy to get to, plenty of parking etc. 2. Is it time to think again about how often to have sunday meetings in Norwich? A year ago it was agreed to have them every three months so that meetings in other parts of the region wouldn't be stifled but apart from BJ at Syleham there haven't been many, if any, other w/e meetings. If we *could* use the Norwich Internet Cafe in the market on a sunday afternoon then how about every other month? Syd
