Hello I have just subscribed to the list. My name is Allan Miller. I have been using Linux extensively for the past 4 years now. After trying various distributions I have settled on Slackware. Occasionally I try a new distribution but end up fairly quickly back with Slackware. I like its speed and simplicity of setting up (I used to dislike the others with everything hidden behind gui's). Because I like fiddling/tuning I can quite easily get lost for hours tweaking things - a bit like a car mechanic who spends hours under the bonnet tuning etc and never takes the car out on the road. And a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. Although 99.9% of the time I boot into Linux I still use Windows within a Vmware virtual machine as I use Coreldraw a lot and there is nothing equivalent yet under Linux. It has been a bit of a solitary life as I don't know anyone else who is using Linux. regards Allan

Messages to 'main-request(a)lists.alug.org.uk' with a subject of 'unsubscribe' appear to fail silently. John or Adam - could you check all is well with the list config? help! I seem to have lost my broadband connection

I seem to have lost my broadband connection which has been running trouble free for four months. It happened sometime on Tuesday. It was going OK in the morning but later in the day I couldn't connect and that has been the case since (I only turn it on when I use my computer rather than having it running continuously). The connection has been trouble free since the first day. Although a while back I did experience something similar but it was back up within 24 hours. (But at that time I didn't look into the 'guts' of my router to see what was actually going on). I have a D-Link DSL-504T. The carrier seems to be up but there is no connection. It is almost as if the 'other end' is not accepting my login/password any more. I seem to remember coming across a login/password on the net you could use to check that your connection was working but I haven't been able to find it again. There could be several places where the error could be - router, telephone exchange (Norwich), ISP (Tiscali/UKFSN). Can some one explain what is happening and how I can get it working again. 3D Games with Suse 9.1

Why has 'ls -a' started mixing hidden files with the others?

When I issue an 'ls -a' or an 'ls -al' I expect all the hidden files (those with a . prefix) to appear before the others but my latest upgrade seems to have stopped this happening. I much prefer to see the hidden files separately, can I get the old sort order back somehow? Email Rules

Hi all, Being new to Linux I am am trying to find my way around and get everything sorted to my liking. One thing I can't seem to find though is how to set up message 'rules' in KMail. I would like to automatically have my messages from different places sent direct to their own mail boxxes. I do this ok in all other email clients I have used on the Mac and MS Windows, but can't seem to find it in Kmail/ Any help would be appreciated. TIA Peter

Introduction

Hi everyone, The name's Peter and I am a new'ish Linux user. I have 'tried' Linux a few times but never really seriously. My 'main' computer is an eMac running OS X 10.3.7 but I have some bits of software and hardware that won't run on a Mac, (amateur radio stuff (G0GSZ)) so I had to build a PC with Windows XP. When I was in Roys I picked up a copy of Linux Magazine which had a copy of Mandrake 10.1 on the cover DVD, so I installed this. I am very impressed. I have broadband via NTL through a cable modem and Belkin router. OS X and Linux detected this and set everything up almost automatically. Windows needed software installing!! At the moment I am only using Linux for email and internet browsing, but have tried other parts. I am experimenting as much as I can as time permits. I live in Bowthorpe and am a home user as I am carer to my disabled (MS) wife. I have been 'playing!' with computers since the late 70's, so have had a little practice / experiance. By the way, I am running the Gnome desktop that came with the installation. That's all, glad to meet you all. Regards Peter

Any openGL / Matrox / SuSE / experts here ?

I've been playing with openGL for a few days and having lots of fun drawing 3d views. Currently I'm just using the mesa (software) openGL library but I would like to get hardware 3d acceleration working. I've got SuSE 9.2 running on a 2.6Ghz HP with a dual headed Matrox G550. Anyone got any experience with setting up the hardware acceleration ? Google searches have not turned up anything simple/useful. Peter

Web viewer for encrypted data - any good ones?

Does anyone know of any good web applications for viewing the contents of encrypted files? I.e. I want to have an encrypted file on my web site which I can view from anywhere using a web browser. Obviously I'd need to supply a password and it needs to be an https: connection. I probably want something a bit more flexible than a password manager as the sort of data I want to store is a bit more than just passwords, though some of it is passwords. Ideally one would provide a password and a key/name of some sort and data for just that key/name would be displayed. I don't need to be able to edit the data via the web page, just view it. Next Open Office question

Having got Open Office to run and the database connection working (which was non-trivial) I'm quite impressed. Setting up forms to enter data into a database is quite clever. Essentially you end up using the Open Office word processor as the forms designer which means that layout and so on is very easy and powerful. However I'm left with one question, you can specify actions for data entry fields as in 'Changed', 'Mouse Button Pressed', 'After Updating', etc. but I cant really see how to program these actions. When you click the '...' box beside an action an 'Assign Macro' window pops up with a whole load of what I assume are pre-defined actions which are called 'OpenOffice.org BASIC Macros' and there's also 'Untitled1 BASIC Macros' but I cant see how to actually use them. Firstly what do all the pre-defined macros do? Secondly how can I write something to do something useful to put in the Untitled1 position? Any ideas anyone? Hi Folks, Luggers using dial-up in the Anglian sticks (and these are about as sticky as sticks get) may like to keep an eye on http://www.onspeed.com/ They claim to offer compression-based internet connections which are capable of increasing the throughput by a factor of about 10: 30kb/s->300kb/s. This is nudging broadband rates. And it's portable. At present, it is available for "PC" (= Windows) and Mac, for £24.96 a year. It involves installing some software on the machine that dials up and apparently routing the connection through onspeed. According to their website: http://www.onspeed.com/en/using.php#existing "Next year we expect to bring out software for Linux. Please email us here to let us know which platforms / browsers you are interested in and we will get in touch with you when available." and it looks as though that web page was written in 2004... Maybe if we follow their suggestion, and encourage them a bit, they might accelerate this a bit! If they've done it for Mac OSX they can't be a hundred miles from doing it for Linux. Hello all, I'm Wai Ngai. There are several reasons I'm interested in Linux. I inherited a tacked together MS network on flaky machines at new work. I'm fed up of MS licencing, random reboots and losing clockcycles to scanning for viruses 24/7! I like the idea that as I get more used to Linux I can add to it, optimise it, contribute to the community. I've recently got a laptop off ebay purely for linux. FYI its a Toshiba 3480CT ultraportable. Its been two weeks of late nights trying to get Linux on there (docking station components, usb floppy emulation, second hand parts?). Finally Suse 9.0 pro is installing without too many problems. With any luck I will be on that machine when next writing. Hope everyone is good. Hello ALUG, I'm trying to write a bash script to mirror some files on my server to another machine (to be run periodically, not a dynamic mirror). First it creates a file which contains the full path of all the files that need to be copied (they are in lots of different directories) separated by newlines (I'd like to keep this aspect of the script as it is also used to create an ISO to backup to DVD sometimes). Next I want to copy all the files in the list to the remote computer. (I've been reading up on scp and have managed to add my key the remote machine so that the script isn't interrupted by password prompts.) The problem I've got is that each item in the list is the name of a regular file including its path and scp won't allow me to copy to the remote machine into a path which doesn't exist: $ROOT=/var/server-mirror ..... for f in `cat FILES` do scp $f $USER@$HOST:$ROOT/$f done [where each $f will be the absolute path of the local file, e.g. '/var/www/index.html' which should copy to '/var/server-mirror/var/www/index.html' on the remote machine] The -r switch, of course, isn't the solution because that only applies to directories at the local end and still doesn't allow you to copy to non-existant directories at the remote end. I suppose what I need is a sort of 'rmkdir' with the -p switch: rmkdir -p $HOST:$ROOT/`dirname $f` Any ideas? Cheers, Richard PS. DVD Video processing software help needed

I have recently aquired a DVD recorder and I want to record on it, transfer the result to my computer, do some simple editing (chop out adverts) and write the results back to a different DVD. I can transfer the contents of a DVD to my computer using DVD-Rip. I can edit the resultant .VOB files using Avidemux. What I can't find out how to do is to write the results back to a DVD. One of my problems is that I really don't understand much of the terminology. ALUG Library

As most of you may already know, as of the Christmas meal I have taken over responsibility for the ALUG library. Any future library queries or donations should be directed to myself, Any books due to be returned can be given to me at the next ALUG meeting or if you prefer, posted to the following address. ALUG Library Crimson Technology 4 Hatter Street Bury St Edmunds Suffolk IP33 1LZ I hope I can provide the same level of service and commitment to this task as Kirsten and Adam have done for the past two years. After a few more days of final tweaking I hope to have the ALUG library online, regardless of it's popularity (or lack of) this will be the method by which I will keep track of the books. The tried and tested method of comming to a meeting (I hope to be at quite a few from now on) or emailing me to borrow a book will still work, however the online library will allow you to make a reservation or check the status of a book as well as browse the inventory or look at book reviews posted by other members. Debian video card choice

Hello ALUG, I'm just installing Debian ("testing") on a Viglen Incepta II to be used a general purpose workstation but I don't know what sort of graphics card I should tell it to use in the X configuration (i.e. when I say # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86). There seems to be very little information about these machines on the Web except for this page: http://www.viglen.co.uk/devportal/std/storefront/inceptas.asp?guid=19364156… Following the 'Specifications' link tells us that it has 'integrated AGP 4x' graphics but I don't know what that means :-( Any ideas? OK, that motorcycle sound making frog phone-tone advert that seems to be on every webpage recently is annoying the hell out of me. Does anyone know how to turn off the sound in firefox please? I can't see anything on the prefs page or about:config. I don't care how it's done (short of compiling the source), please help me get rid of that frogs tedious 'brrrmmmmm'ing noises (and all the other beeps and sounds some web developers like to use) ;) (running firefox 0.8 on Sarge) beb -------------------------------- I'm getting pissed for xmas, just like the rest of the year, There's no future in this world of ours, so I might as well have a beer.

Presumably the spammers are that address from the public archives of this list at lists.blackcatnetworks.co.uk / lists.alug.org.uk. Networking printers with Linux

I'm still trying to decide what all-in-one printer (if any) suits our needs best. I've narrowed down to a shortlist of:- Brother MFC5840CN or MFC3440CN - Linux drivers soon, ethernet and USB Canon MP780 - No Linux drivers, USB HP 7310 or 6110 - No Linux drivers, but PCL3. USB and ethernet. Lexmark X7170 - Win2k and XP only Dell 962 - Dell badged Lexmark X7170 The Dell 962 is unbelievably cheap at the moment (£83 or so) and is basically a Lexmark X7170 with a few cosmetic changes. The Canon also looks good. The HPs are good but not perfect, the Windows drivers use more than 250MB and I've seen reports of problems with them. I *might* thus decide to go for a Windows only printer which raises a question:- Can I connect a printer with a USB interface to my Linux box and share it with Samba so that my Win2k systems can use it even though it doesn't have Linux drivers. Hi all, The list admins are getting lots of messages saying this:- From: Mail Sieve Subsystem <postmaster(a)messagingengine.com> To: main-admin(a)lists.alug.org.uk Subject: Automatically rejected mail It looks like someone has subscribed to some kind of filtering by messagingengine.com, which means for every mail that goes to the list the main-admins get a reject notice. If by any chance you know who is using this system then if you can let me or them know that would be great, (or indeed if you are that person and are reading this mail elsewhere then please make it stop!). Any (quick+easy) suggestions of how to track down the person whose mail setup is causing these would be most useful. Any experience with Brother printers here?

I'm thinking of buying an 'all-in-one' printer to save space in our home office and some of the Brother models seem to offer all we want at a reasonable price. In particular we're interested in the MFC3345CN and the MFC5840CN. I've not had particularly good experience with Brother printers, we had an HL1060 laser for quite a while and it was never really quite as good as it should have been. The HP1150 laser we replaced it with is much better and more trouble-free. However the MFC3345CN and MFC5840CN. are inkjets so are rather different. Does anyone have any experience with these two (or similar) Brother printers? They both offer:- 20ppm B&W, 15ppm colour inkjet printing (take the speeds with a pinch of salt, isn't really important). Fax Scanner (MFC3345CN sheet feed, MFC5840CN flat bed) Photo printing with photo card readers Copier function Automatic Document Feeder What I'm particularly interested in is:- Paper handling reliability and space used by paper in and out. Where has everyone gone?

Where's everyone gone? It's been very quiet here for the past few days. Or has something gone wrong with my E-Mail (I'm seeing my own messages though). I'm still wondering about printers for our SoHo system, I'm not so sure that the Brother all-in-one is the right way to go now. What we have at present is:- Old Brother thermal paper fax machine HP840C inkjet Epson 1650 photo scanner HP1150 laser printer I'd really like to take less space for all these facilities which was why I was looking at the Brother, it would replace the fax machine and the HP840C and give standalone copying as well. To bring Linux into the equation whatever printer(s) I get have to work for Linux as well as for Win2k. Currently the HP840C and 1150 are on a print server and there are reasonable Linux drivers for both these printers. It gets more complicated with newer printers though as many only have USB and that means I'd probably have to have them connected to the Linux box and make them available using Samba. Some printers have built in networking (like the Brothers) and that adds a further grey area in that I don't know if the networking they provide is compatible with Linux. One thing I'd really like is a duplex (i.e. double sided) printer which would replace the HP1150 as the workhorse printer. Many of the latest generation of colour lasers have reasonably cheap duplex add-ons (or have it built in) so this could well be one way to go, though it doesn't save any space. Again does anyone know if any of the cheap colour laser printers work well with Linux? ALUG site hosting and Library things

Who is responsible for the hosting of the ALUG site, does anybody know if it has the facilities I would need to host the ALUG Library there ? Primarily I need MySQL and PHP, although shell access would also be nice. I really don't mind hosting it in some free webspace I got from my ISP (where it is now) we could link to it from the main ALUG site and all would be well.....except for a few tiny things. Plusnet's CGI and MySQL servers are a bit slow sometimes. It's just not as tidy when a link for an ALUG facility takes you to a third parties domain for what is supposed to be part of the LUG. But mainly there are a couple of things I would like to add down the road that really aren't going to be that easy with it where it is right now. One is that I would (eventually) like to create (or convince some kind soul to contribute) some php hack that lists book reviews on a page on the ALUG site outside of the library login. As pointed out by Ashley this may help us get more books donated in the future by publishers. Another thing I thought of is tying the library registration into the list subscription mechanism, so as soon as you join the list you get an email with a username and random password from the library. Unfortunately both of these things really need access to the library database from outside my hosting provider's domain (something I don't think plusnet provide)

I thought that it was supposed to go like this: target: source command and that, in this case, 'source' would be 'index.xml meta-data.xml' and it would make the target if the source files had changed. They can read/write 60, 90 and 120 metre tapes, up to 8Gb a 120 metre tape. I shall definitely be going along to this (acts of God excepted!) so anyone in the Norwich area who wants a lift let me know ASAP. :) (work email keith.watson at kewill.com or private email kpwatson at ukfsn.org). Who else is coming? Anybody interested in me doing a demo of converting a Windows only box into a dual boot Windows+GNU/Linux (Debian) system using Knoppix? Let me know via the list otherwise I'll assume it's of no interest to anyone. Incidentally I've been testing this out and a basic Windows (2000) install takes just over an hour and the conversion takes 45 mins. And the Debian install has all the functionality of Knoppix (as opposed to the very basic Windows set-up). Here's what I propose; 1) boot box with Knoppix and run the install script (includes using QTParted to repartition the disk) which sets up a 2.4 and 2.6 Linux kernel based system and uses LILO as the boot loader. [and, if we have a web feed...] 2) set up a Debian sources list and use synaptic to update the software to latest versions 3) show how easy it is to maintain the GNU/Linux software on a Debian set-up by using synaptic. As there'll be some time spent waiting for things to load off CD or from the net we can talk around some of the issues. I haven't a spare printer ATM so if anyone's interested and wants to bring one along we can also have a go at setting up a printer. Linux, TV cards and DVD recording

I am thinking of getting a digital TV card for my computer so that I can record programmes for viewing later on my television using a DVD player. I already have a DVD R/W drive on my computer ( 2 x 1.3 MHz CPUs ). I'm using a 2.4 kernel and don't propose moving to 2.6 in the near future. I'm planning to use what I believe is called Terrestrial digital broadcasting and NOT satallite broadcasts. I've borrowed someone's set top box for a short time and was able to get BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4 and Channel 5. This was using an ordinary pre-channel 5 aerial so I'm hoping that a proper digital aerial will give more channels. According to freeview.co.uk I can't get any digital channels for my postcode, BBC tells me that I can get only BBC channels and dtg.org tells me I can get all of them. Ain't the web wonderful? This raises lots of questions and the more research I do the longer the list of questions seems to grow. I'm thinking of an Hauppauge WinTV-Nova-T PCI as I understand it works with Linux. Is it going to be difficult to set up? Any suggestions/ recommendations for other PCI cards? The specification for this says that it accepts UHF input only but what I want to know is can I plug my tv aerial lead into it and expect it to work? What Linux software is available/needed? I don't understand a lot of the terminology and don't know what to search for. I run Debian Sarge/ Testing. How easy/difficult is it to create DVD discs with, for example, 2 hours of recording? What about file sizes greater than 2 GB? Do I need to take the different DVD formats ( DVD-R DVD+R ) into account when using a DVD player for playback? Watching the only DVD disc I have (Life on Earth - BBC), which came with a packet of cornflakes, I see that moving objects are noticeably blurred. Is this a function of my video setup Matrox Millenium AGP. Any comments and advice would be appreciated at this stage. I feel like someone who's learning to fly for the very first time in dense fog! Transcode tips

Maybe I am not even using the right tool here...but I have a DVD (or actually a set of DVD's) to which my client holds full rights, they are unencumbered by any CSS copy control system. We have a solid state media playback system that we want to play back the DVD content from a memory card. From what I can tell from the Engrish manual that came with the media player the video format needs to be VCD (which I gather is mpeg1) Try as I might I can't get transcode to do anything but come up with cryptic error messages, first it was complaining that- [transcode] warning : (encoder.c) audio codec not supported by export module That was using the following command transcode -i vts_01_1.vob -o /home/wayne/wayne.mpg -x mpeg2 -y mpeg2enc -F vcd Now I am not bothered about audio for this task....so I tried transcode -i vts_01_1.vob -o /home/wayne/wayne.mpg -x mpeg2,null -y mpeg2enc,null -F vcd Which gives me the following output at the bottom of this message. Debian and large hard drives

It sounds as if you've got a version with an old 137G disk limit. At a rough guess I would suggest you partition and possibly (minimum) install of mandrake so you can check for any usefull settings. You should then be able to install debian in its place and then re-compile the kernel with >137G support - check its available first. Then the NTFS partition should become visible and mountable (readonly) under Linux. If you wish to 'communicate' Linux<->XP you may wish to consider a smaller Win32 type partition which can be mounted under Debian and XP then you could just partition the hard drive and then stick debian on it and ignore the fact it cant read 137G+ of bug ridden code which sounds like a blessing to me! 'locate', does anyone find it useful?

I tend always to use find when looking for files but recently discovered 'locate'. However the 'locate' way of doing things strikes me a not very useful as it searches for the string you give it in every part of the filename which, in general, gives far too many hits. E.g. if I do "locate organ" in the hope of finding some file containing organ music I get thousands of hits with 'Korganizer' etc. in. I also tried "locate -r '^organ" but that found nothing (which is also wrong). Hi I seem to be getting an ever increasing number of requests for Linux details from people.usually ordinary home /office users The people concerned are able to install it themselves, but the main problem is they are using the supplied modem - Speedtouch USB Can anyboy recommend a cheap Modem/Router which will work straight out of the box for Linux? Can one turn off Firefox's "guess what you're going to type"?

Firefox's "guessing" is getting on my nerves and I'd really like to turn it off but I can't see anywhere in Preferences that would do it. The way it works in the address box is just about OK, there you can hit Tab to select the first "guess". However elsewhere this facility doesn't seem to be available so you have to move to the mouse to do anything useful. The real nuisance is that the "guess" often obscures useful and relevant information. Postfix dilivery to wrong place?

Ok, I have a wierd problem here: System: Using postfix as the mail agent, I have a virtual table and an aliases table. Debian stable / unstable / extra bits Problem: Before two / three weeks ago some mail delivered to jt(a)imen.org.uk ended up in tola's. At this point, there where no entries for tola in any tables, and two for jt in the aliases. Nobody else on any domain or username was affected. To edit this, I changed the virtuals table to read as the below, ran the postmap restarted postfix etc, Now, no emails to tola(a)imen.org.uk are recieved at all - they all go to jt. I have tried swapping the ordering of the tola and jt lines in the Virtual file around with no success. Does anyone have any idea what is going on between us? ALUG library online !!

I have been experimenting with OpenDB tonight with a view to using it to manage the Alug library. As well as making the librarians life a bit easier it allows borrowers to check the loan status of books etc, post reservations and reviews/comments. You can check it out in my test area here http://cgi.digimatic.plus.com/opendb/login.php Use the "sign me up" link to request a login (may take some time as I have to respond to a mail to make the user active) There are still a few bugs to be ironed out (mainly because OpenDB is more geared towards lending entertainment media not books) and it still needs a general tidy up. I would appreciate some feedback as to whether this is useable by ALUG members, fedback on bugs etc. If deemed acceptable then I am happy to have a link on the ALUG site pointing to my hosting space, alternatively if MySQL and PHP are available wherever the ALUG main site is, it could be moved there when finished. Please note that the items currently in the database are merely samples to test the system with...booking one as a reservation does not mean that you will get it at present, in fact your reservations will probably get deleted so that others can play with it.

Probably a simple one, but I can't figure it... I want to do some conversions on a set of files in a directory, such as for file in * do do_something_with $file done However, I want to do the files in date order, not alphabetically, so I tried for file in $(ls -tr) etc. But this only works if the files don't have spaces in their names; "for" breaks them up into space-delimited tokens, which is no use at all. How do I do this (apparently) simple thing? -- GT

Only just caught up with this thread. Is it sorted now? or still unresolved? I'd like to help but can't for the next couple of months because of other commitments, but after that I'd be happy to take a stint. So that the task doesn't continually fall to one person maybe we can pass it around every 6 months or so? Incidentally does anyone know if other lugs operate their own library? and, if so, how they organize things? Be particularly interested to know if any of them have computerised it in any way or form. ubuntu modem problem

Hi When I use the ubuntu live CD, I can set up my modem, using pppconfig, (a standard serial port 56k, detected by Suse, Mandrake , Debian etc). When I install Ubuntu, I get "no network devices detected" I have tried pppconfig with TTYS0 etc, but obviously this does not work. Any ideas please? Regards Nick Daniels

Urgent - kind new home required!

Hi, Who would like/would be willing/can be persuaded to take over the Alug library? Adam and I have been looking after the library for nearly two years now, but we don't have the space to hold onto it any more. It is a large-ish and heavy box of various interesting geek/computing/coding type books which gets taken to the bigger meetings (not usually pub nights). These are books which have been donated by members of Alug present and past. There is also a little notebook wherein is inscribed in letters of ballpoint the names of those borrowing any books, which books they borrowed, the date they borrowed them and a contact detail or two. There is ample scope for whoever takes over to put the whole thing on a web page, use software to organise it all, etc etc, we use the box and the notebook as it has been simplest that way for us. If you have space in a cupboard, room in the boot of your car, a tendency to go to the bigger meetings, and benevolence towards Alug in your heart, would you please consider giving the library a new home? Our storage space is now at a premium, so even a temporary home would be gratefully accepted. /Kirsten

Nice levels and I/O

Leading on from my previous question---- Say I wanted to run this backup on a live machine, how do I limit I/O so that the machine remains responsive. The copy operation itself only uses a small percentage of processor time, but hammers the living daylights out of the disk I/O so surely using nice to limit it wouldn't slow it down much. It's not important for this particular thing, but I am interested to know if it's even possible considering that the kernel doesn't even really know how busy the disks are. Or is nice clever enough to know that something else with a higher priority is wanting disk access ? My plan is that now I have made the initial copy I can use rsync to keep it up to date...or is there a better way ?

As the price of these things seem to be dropping lately I've been googling round seeing how compatible they are with GNU/Linux. The Linux Printers site (http://www.linuxprinting.org/) seems to favour Epson (although HP gets favourable mentions). Anyone on the list use one of these devices with Linux? Looking at http://www.alug.org.uk/meetings/2004/, we seem to be without a single future meeting. We will be due for a City Gate meeting on Thursday 13th January (2nd Thursday of the month). This is not on any web page yet, however it is very close to one of our planned dates for our Christmas meal. Does this make Fri 14th January less appealing for a Christmas meal date? If you can remember Dan Computers ...

Hi Folks, I wonder if anyone with a long memory can help me out. I want to have a look at a neighbour's PC which has been giving a bit of trouble, and need to take the cover off the case to get inside (especially to clean out dust, dead insects and cobwebs... ). Superficially looks like a standard desktop box. However, it was made by Dan Technology in 1995 ... I can't see how to take the cover off the case: on the surface it looks as though you can slide the overall cover off backwards, *provided* you can work out which screws you need to remove in order to free it. It's the question of "which screws" that's vexing me. The cover itself has no screws obviously associated with holding it in place. There's what looks like a back-plate with a total of 15 screws in it, some of which may simply be fixing screws and some of which seem to be associated with mounting internal bits like fans, port sockets, etc. Maybe the solution is to remove all these, take off the backplate, and then see how to get at removing the cover. But the last thing I want to do is remove screws blindly and cause unwanted consequences! I've never seen a case quite like it. If anyone can remember opening up a Dan box like this and can advise on how to proceed I'd be very grateful. Hi My monitor died this morning, a 19 inch Eizo I replaced it with a spare 14inch and without running Sax the screen appeared OK. this evening I decided to set it up correctly, however when I run Sax I get message Nested quantifiers in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/�<-- HERE so505/ at /usr/X1 I cannot set it up by Yast either. I wish to repace it by a 15 in TFT and think I may have problems Has anybody any ideas please. O/S Suse 9.1 Pro Regards Nick Daniels

Have set up KMail and was looking at the setting for POP. It says Port 995. I thought that should be 110. When I changed it to 110 it said Unable to contact ISP. Any info or suggestions welcome. Am accessing the internet through a Belkin Wireless modem/router. Regards Stan

Wireless AP selection?

This seems like it should be a really simple question but ive had a quick look at iwconfig and iwprivIf but i still cant work out the answer. If there is more then one wireless ap in the area how can i select between them? This is something thats quite simple in windows(as i saw when i gave my girlfriend a wireless card that doesn't work with Linux) and was hoping for just a command line tool or command but so far I've been out of luck :-(. As a side question does anyone know where i might be able to find some parts for an old dell laptop(Latitude CPi D266XT)? I've got 4 GMail accounts going free to good homes if anyone wants one?
