I havent tried it in Linux but under some unix (AIX for certain) the adduser command is 'flushed' to help prevent this happening i.e. if you pipe into the command the whole stream is dumped before the username is prompted for so using scripts wont work! The reason for this is its an obvious security risk to allow people to create users from files easily. Like all bad security ideas you can get round this by pretending youre a modem! i.e. use an stream reading 'client' like chat as a 'buffer' that only sends the username/password/group etc when requested by the adduser program. I should have RTFM whilst I had the time ;-) I've started a small list in there, but can't put much in as i've never been to the venue: howwever, please add your names if you are coming and we'll build the list up. Does anyone want to chat about mail systems? :-) I see I have been volunteered for a poster.........I've fired off an email to the main linux install fest folk asking if they have a custom built one. Help with a script :)

Greetings people, I need some help or suggestion for a script (actually for my girlfriend who is doing a degree in Comp. Sci in USA). She has a subject on Sys Admin. on Linux :) and on my last trip to USA I installed her a RedHat box at home since they use RH at Uni. , helped her a lot with some other exams on basic sys admin in Linux, inst. etc but I am nowhere with scripting. So here we go the assignment in full : 1. Write the AUFF (Add User From File) script. 2. This script should take a filename as a command line parameter. 3. This file should contain all of the "standard" options for the add user command. 4. You get to decide the format. 5. You get to document the script. 6. You get to write a "man" document supporting your script. 7. Submit a printout of the script, a test file, and your "man" document. 8. Implementing any advanced parsing features will earn you bonus points. (optional) Sorry for the long list and any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. I'm back to College now in Ipswich and again as always if someone needs some Linux ISO's and lacks a broadband conn. I am more then happy to burn some fresh ones for any user in the group (for free of course:). I will try to make some of our meetings as I do miss them :) thanks for your time and hope to see you all again later. Bamir.

ADSL ethernet modems

Hi, Now that ClaraNet are offering an affordable "Wires-Only" ADSL package, I am thinking abou changing over to it. I'm getting fed up with a 56k modem download speed. I want to use my linux machine as a firewall/router, as I currently do with the modem. Themachine has two network cards in it. The first is a 100Mb Linksys card which has the private network. The second is a 10Mb NE2K-PCI card which is currently unused. I have been considering getting the Alcatel Speedtouch Home Ethernet ADSL modem. From reading the manual I beleive I can set it up so that my linux machine has the correct IP address for the outside world (using PPTP and PPP). I want the Linux machine to do the NATing, and not the ADSL modem. I do not want to use USB devices as they are too processor intensive, and I have had problems with USB on both Windows and Linux machines, I don't trust it as far as I could throw it. Has anybody had any experience with setting up Ethernet ADSL modems? Can you recommend any other devices than the one I've named? M$ to release db based filesystem

OK, I'm a bit slow on the uptake (I refer to this article: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/23852.html ) But doesn't this have rather strong implications for interoperability? BASICALLY, the article is about the next version of Windows and how M$ are said to be planning a filesystem that is basically one big database- effectively shipping out a copy of M$ SQL server with the OS. I guess that when you request some information, it will form a Transact-SQL (TM) query... Anyone have any thoughts on this? Another interesting article, btw is http://www.namesys.com/whitepaper.html Do you think it'll really make a big difference to Linux? Meetings! next one Elmswell Sunday 21st April

Hi all, I just realised that we have a meeting next weekend at Elmswell, can somebody either email me the venue info as i can't find it or edit the Wiki so that the info is there? Also does somebody want to spam^Hinform other linux groups in the area and do the newsgroup thang? Also is the UEA meeting confirmed yet for June? If so should we start trying to publicise it this week, I guess most print magazines will be past the submissions date for this (linux format etc.) but we can concentrate on the papers and local Radio etc. etc....
