Greetings Penguin Worshippers, Just signed up for your group since I've decided to have another go at getting into linux. I failed a couple of years back after giving up on getting my network card working w/ Red Hat 7.1. I even had 2 linux gurus come in and try and get it working with no success. I am a student placement working as an OSS Engineer at BTexact in Ipswich, Suffolk. I've always been a big programmer/hacker/code monkey and wisked away many an hour making some useless application or another. I'm getting fed up with doing windows programming and wanting to try something different... And so my long journey towards a new faith, "linux", begins. Under the true gods... a Penguin and a Goat. So, to start off. What distros are used by most of you, since I don't wanna start using a distro I can't get help for. Plus, I don't know which Distro would be best suited for a homeuser/developer/gamer. The only two distros I've really had a look at are Debian and Red Hat. One, because a mate of mine used it, and the other simply because I hear the name Red Hat all the time (Never knew if thats a good thing or a bad thing...) I have a small home network of just two machines. Machine1 runs Debian Testing with Exim and Procmail. Machine2 is running Mandrake 9 with Postfix. I have just spent about two half-days trying to set things up so that I can send mail from one machine to another. After having spent hours searching for information on both my own machine and on the Internet I have to admit defeat. When I try to send mail from a user on either machine to a user on the other I get the following message: 'Host lookup did not complete' /etc/hosts.conf on both machines: order hosts,bind multi on /etc/hosts on machine1: 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.1.1 machine1.mynetwork machine1 192.168.1.2 machine2.mynetwork machine2 # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts # (added automatically by netbase upgrade) ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters ff02::3 ip6-allhosts Surely it can't be this difficult? I should add that a lot of the information I have read might just as well have been written in Swahili for all the sense it made. After a very, very, very frustrating 24 hours I can appreciate why some people would give up on Linux and go back to Windows. Am I missing an important bit of software? Threats to free software

I just wondered how many people were aware of two recent threats to free software. 1. W3C "royalty freee" patent policy proposals. -------------------------------------------- The proposed policy permits W3C members to commit their patent claims "royalty-free" for use by implementers of the standard, but with "field of use" restrictions that would be incompatible with section 7 of the GNU General Public License. Such "field of use" restrictions, in other words, would prevent implementation of W3C standards as Free Software. Details at http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/w3c-patent.html. Comments to W3C must reach <www-patentpolicy-comment(a)w3.org> by Tuesday 31 December 2002. 2. EU plans to legalise software patents in Europe. ------------------------------------------------ The proposal was drafted by the Business Software Alliance, a US-based group dominated by Microsoft, in cooperation with the European Commission. AFAIK it is still under discussion by the European Comission. It seems to pose a threat to free software and the Internet. SuSE mini home network

Hello again, I eventually gave up with Mandrake and installed SuSE 8.1 Professional instead on both my machines. Works much better and was totally easy to set up. So now I have a different question if anyone can answer it... (I don't think its a hard one... ) I have two machines in my mini home network, one dual booting MSW98SE and SuSE8.1Prof and the other just booting SuSE8.1Prof (because its only got a diddy 4Gig hard drive so it didn't seem worth putting both operating systems on it.) One of the machines connects to the internet via 56k modem (I intend to upgrade to ADSL in a few months time but am working with this set up for now). We use KMail as our mail client, and I would like to set it up so we can access our accounts from either machine. There are three seperate users. Anyone know how to set it up to do this? Anton

Linux booting from second ide controller?

Hi, Ive just got a new computer with win 2000 installed. Its also got alot of specialist software and device drivers(not avalible for linux) so im keeping it(i also like it its the only version of windows i can say that about). So my problem is that i dont want to re-install windows 2000 on a smaller partition unless i have REALY have to. If there were a version of fips or somthing similare then id maybe resize it so i could fit a smallish "/boot" partision. The boot partition needs to be in the first 8 Gig if i remember correctly or is that just older computers/drives? I do have a spare hd lying around not doing much but i seem to remember theres a problem getting linux to boot fromt he second ide controller, am i wrong? Also is there anyproblems booting win2000 with lilo? Same as win98 right?
