Did anyone ever get anywhere with that list of (people==IRC nicks) that was being talked about a while ago? It definitely sounds like the switch isn't detecting new devices properly. There could be something else, but you don't really want to do forensics (replace bits until things work) on it at this location. -- MJR

No, that's actually very very easy if you know the right (wrong?) way to stroke it. It's also possible to leave it functioning but in various states of unrecoverable brokenness, thanks to the modular nature of most Unix systems. The admin tools and documentation seem rather primitive compared to Linux's, yet are incredibly over-engineered. Basically, it's bizarre. ;-) -- MJR

Desperate Apache Problem!

One of our RedHat servers decided it wasn't going to play ball this morning (worthy of another email on exactly this subject actually) but as an upshot of this, I've had to move several websites to another server that is being good. So... ftp'ed the websites to the other server and cut-n-pasted the apache config file etc. After fidding around a bit have managed to get everything up and running -except- for two virtual domains which aren't behaving themselves. As it happens, these two domains are on both 80 and 443 (SSL). When I access them, I get an HTTP 302 which I don't really understand. All the other domains are working fine. Have examined the logs and used telnet to connect to port 80 to see exactly what headers etc are coming back. Normally, a 302 should give a URL to redirect to, which in this case is "http://" without any other info. Weird. Any ideas/clues - am getting very frustrated now? Cheers. Mark W. It seems to do much the same things as insmod, on looking at the man page. I don't think I've done a single thing that has been "straightforward" since i started doing linux.....makes me suspicious. Perhaps i should stick to being a musician.

Network Woes!

OK, Here's another one for you experts out there. We've got a 24 port hub/switch in telehouse which is connected to a router. We've got several machines connected up and they are running great. No problems. Excellent connectivity. One of our guys goes down to London yesterday and swops a network card in one of the boxes and installs a fresh new RedHat box in the cabinet for us to play with. Things start to go weird.. The box with the new network card in it and the totally new box can see all the other machines on the subnet and they can see each other. Fine up to now. So.. I try to telnet into these boxes from home (NTL dialup modem) and can't access them. I can access all the other machines on that subnet no problem but not those two machines. In addition, those two machines can't see the router that's attached to the hub. I'm running no clever firewalling or anything on any of those machines. My thoughts are that the switch is misbehaving and is about to smoke or that the router is selectively ignoring certain addresses... Any other thoughts on this? Cheers. Mark W.

Yep, I made the 3c509 file, ran the update modules, and sure as eggs it has picked it up. However, somewhere the card is still bound to ne.....not in aliases, not in modules.conf.....so when I try to bring up eth0 it is telling me "ne.c: No NE*000 card found at i/o=0x2a0 eth0: unknown interface: No such device"........anyone have any idea?
