February - perfect month for a dip

Dear all - Following one of the OSS Oxon regulars, a couple of us have decided that we will swim at least once every month over 2011. Having braved January - here is the plan for February: * We, Sef, Jeremy, Pam and Lindsay are meeting for a swim at Mapledurham, Purley, Nr. Reading, on Sunday 6th February 2011 at 11:00am. If you would like to join us you would be very welcome. Let me know if you are thinking of coming or alternatively just turn up on the day.* *Park at Mapledurham Lock but on the Purley housing estate side off the A329 Oxford Road, (somewhere around the junction of Wintringham Way and Colyton Way): * * http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Wintringham+W… * *We will then walk down Mapledurham Drive towards Mappledurham lock (No access for cars) to the river and then upstream (turn left at river) as far as "Thames Beach", more or less as we feel fit, and then swim back to the lock. I've swum in the Cherwell, but it's very very muddy at the edges, so quite difficult unless you have a landing stage to swim from and back to. Hi Claire, I think you meant to send this to the list, so I'll follow up to the list. I've kayaked and punted on the Cherwell past Hildas so I don't see why one shouldn't swim there - as far as I know it's perfectly standard navigable water. We've swum from the Vicky Arms in Marston down to the Marston cycle path past the Parks, which was gorgeous, and you can do with bank access to public footpaths both ends. I think it's very much in a landowner's power to forbid swimming *from* the bank but if you're already in the water and access it from public footpaths I'm not sure what the laws say. Generally nobody seems to mind. After regular swimming in previous years I've been scarce in the water in 2010 (due to combination of various projects plus moving house) and just done a few spur-of-the-moment swims with my girlfriend. Got back this week from a great expedition to China and hoping to swim more in 2011 as there's still lots of Thames I've not seen. The Thames is a bit chilly in the winter (definitely wetsuit territory for me, though some tough it out in a cossie) and there are some lovely stretches with good access to the footpath most of the way along. Port Meadow is one of my favourites, James is a treasure trove of other good site info in the area :-) As ever the trick seems to be to get enough experience on easy sections that you can assess new swims for yourself and figure out your own safety levels - all about personal responsibility, really, though lots of good advice on this list :-) Weekend weather looks potentially fun - some good opportunities for wild-weather swimming if the river isn't bursting its banks. Yesterdays Swim at Kelmscott

We Swam Kelmscott to Grafton lock yesterday (River Thames) with a few friends and walking back, bumped into another group of swimmers. For those that know who these were (or if that is you) - Shifford Lock (at Chimney Meadows) to Newbridge was the swim one of us shouted at you from the bank. http://tinyurl.com/mne54d This gives you the complete swim ...we did one weekend (with Lunch in between). It is about 1.5 to 2 hours swim at a gentle pace and if you make it a Sunday swim you can book ahead for a post Sunday Lunch when you finish. Makes it less of a bind for those that are drivers and not swimmers as they can wait in the pub. It's a relatively remote swim in terms of civilization, so if you go make sure you can swim for that period of time or don't mind dragging yourself out and walking along the path. Oh and if you haven't been, the Rose Revived Pub is better than the Maybush Pub (Maytime?) which are on either side of the bridge. You can get out before or after the bridge very easily.

Winter swim solstice social

Hello swimmers, It's such a lovely day haha that I thought I might think up a winter swim. It might depend on the weather, but I'm going to hazard *Sunday 12th December at 11.30 *as an option. If you want to join, meet at the carpark of the Trout Inn, Oxford http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Perch+Inn,+Ox… We can have a meander up the towpath and swim back down to the pub for some warming beverages. Any watchers and walkers would as always be welcome, for their wonderful support and also their carrying properties. We can make it as long or short as we feel like - there are a number of places that are fine for getting in and out. Please e- me back if you think you are coming so I have an idea of numbers. I also reiterate that it is subject to the weather. If it looks to be an awful blizzard or potentially too too cold, then I will suggest we don't go, although you are free to do as you please! hampshire swim group

Dear All Just in case I missed anyone am copying you this email for our Hampshire group in case any of you interested in being on our list or in this swim. I am aware that some of you are in OSS rats so apologies for duplication for some of you but did not want to miss anyone. Just let me know if you want to be added to our group list but if not will not bother you again! Dear All I have devised a group list of Hampshire swimmers for ease of communicating any swims being organised in the local area. Do let me know if you would rather not be on this list but thought it might be a good way of letting each other know of a swim if we are not a regular on Facebook. We can always stick it up there as well if we want. I am thinking of going for a swim in the river Hamble on Sunday 10th October around 1ish, getting in at a spot I know in Manor Farm Country Park. The tide is right on that day at that time, thinking of swimming away from marina area for a while and then just back to same spot that I got in. If anyone fancies joining me that would be great. We could go for something hot to eat and drink after at one of the local pubs, maybe the jolly sailor at Burseldon. Rebecca - if you are able to make it, am happy to collect you from ferry and give lift back. All the best everyone. If we just reply all, then everyone knows what is going on. Up and Coming Oxon Swims

Hello, A couple of us are pencilling in Tuesday 14 Sept evening for a swim I was thinking somewhere 'around' here http://www.multimap.com/s/itD2Qmkb However I am more than open to other suggestions. As the sun is setting earlier and earlier, we probably need to get in the water around 18:45 ish - sun set is 19:25. There seem to be a few pubs nearby and I can have a scope about to see what is there - unless anyone knows the area. Also, I'd been mulling about doing a 'proper' night swim - midnight or later (!) kind of time - but without a moon, maybe a new-moon swim. I know this won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for this I was thinking about the same place we did the silent swim. http://www.multimap.com/s/huH8Lkgd Nice and wide and plenty of places to get out plus it is easy to walk along the bank, but walk to where the 'short' swim was and swim downstream to the islands. While I know that people have to get up in the morning, some of us were looking at either Friday Oct 1 or Friday 8th to give us all a lie in on Saturday. Again it's all fluid, so any suggestions welcome. We can then firm up the dates and times as they get nearer. James

Hi everyone I hope the Mapledurham swim went well. It's a lovely stretch. I haven't been as far as the lock so I'm looking forward to hearing about it. Anyone have a preference for a swim next week from Sonning? Helen and I can do Monday or Wednesday evening - I'm free on Monday from around 6.30 and on Wednesday around 7.00 - or if anyone's free the following weekend Saturday 18th in the afternoon looks ok, as does Sunday 19th morning. It would be great to have a swim as my wetsuit is desperate to have its first dip, and all I've had at home is peals of hysterical laughter when I've tried it on on dry land. Hope to see you soon. Ah, good point. Lindsay is the one who knows this stretch. Where are we meeting, Lindsay? I'm starting to wonder if the OSSrats email list was such a good idea, as we're now potentially discussing swims in three places - Oxon and RATS email groups, plus the OSS facebook pages! I thought that all the Berkshire activity might get wearisome for people in north Oxon, though... perhaps it will get more straightforward once all the interested parties join OSSRATS.
