OSS Swim the Thames #23 - Sunday 22nd April - Radley to Abingdon Lock

Fellow floaters, It’s time to put down those Easter eggs and pick up the pace, this swim will be a little longer(~4.5km) than recent ones but there will be options to get out early. Access to the river is a little tricky around here so we'll park near the finish and shuttle to the start. Let’s meet at 10:30 at the large car park just south east of Abingdon Bridge http://g.co/maps/cuxtq , the car park is not free so bring some change, we should get away with paying for 3 hours. Faffing will commence at 10:30 but it will end at 11:00 when we will all be rubbered up and take 2/3/4 cars to the start at Radley boat house, there isn't space for many cars here. We'll leave our dry clothes at Abingdon Bridge car park. Then it’s the easy bit, we'll swim downstream with the Thames path on our right with a pit stop(or early exit) at 2.5km just after the railway bridge. Then we'll aim to swim on to Abingdon lock, there looks like another early get out option at http://g.co/maps/hmfr4 . There are fairly obvious paths from these get out points back to the Abingdon Bridge car park but you'll need to walk them in your swimming kit. We'll return by car for lunch at the Bowyers Arms next to Radley station to use their free car park and hospitality. Hi Gang, I have updated the blog with all the details of the swims I missed over the winter up to and including today. I have also added a summary of Year 1. Good Friday Catchups - Swims 18, 19 and 20.

Dear All, Myself and Chloe will be doing the stretch from Folly Bridge to Kennington on Friday evening which was previously done in December, January and February as swims 18, 19 and 20. We will meet in the Health Centre car park in Kennington opposite The Tandem pub at 4pm on Friday 6th April 2012: http://g.co/maps/dkebh Once changed, we will do the (rather long) walk up to Folly Bridge and then swim back - a distance of just under 3.5km. This should get us finished in time to then zoom across town to meet up with the Full Moon swimmers at Godstow Lock for a quick (possibly non-wetsuit!) second dip. Anyone is welcome to join us for any or all of the above swim. It would be helpful if you could let me know if you are planning to come along. Hi, I'd like to join you on this Friday's swim - is there a set distance? I think someone mentioned 3.5 km - Im not sure I can withstand the cold for this far! - is anyone planning on getting out earlier? Also - is this swimming both ways? Or getting out and ? walking back? On our left, Nuneham Courteney, erstwhile home of the Earls Harcourt, the first of whom moved the village out of the way in order to better landscape the estate. Now occupied by the Global Retreat Centre, what oneness we shall feel with the world when we slip out of the water at the boathouses opposite. This little stretch was a favourite of Charles Dodson (Lewis Carroll), and he got wet here regularly with the young prototype Alice. The boathouses themselves belong to the boys of Radley College. Alumni of that fine establishment include the great historian Christopher Hibbert, the indefatiguable campaigning lawyer, Clive Stafford-Smith, England's test cricket captain, Andrew Strauss, and who could forget Richard Gibson, best known for his exceptional performance in the complex role of Herr Flick in TV's 'Allo 'Allo. So, wet bobs (Radley slang doncha know), get ye to *Radley Station carpark at 11.00am *on Easter *Monday* *9th April. *http://g.co/maps/qraq7 There will be a bit of shallying I am afraid due to access issues so pay attention (I shall say zis only once): the boathouse is about 1km from the station - we will walk there and get changed into rubbers and pack all dry gear into a couple of cars (there isn't room for more). We will then *walk*up to Sandford Lock - 2.5km - and swim down. On getting out, change into dry gear at the boathouse and walk back to Radley for a resurrecting lunch at the Bowyer Arms. Dear all, I suggest for the evening swim, we meet at 7.30pm at the car park near Godstow Lock, at the top end of Wolvercote Meadow. http://g.co/maps/87h7d [Friday 6th April: Sunset: 7:48pm, Moonrise: 7:55pm, Full Moon: 8:19pm] As for food afterwards, if people prefer a pub meal, the nearby Red Lion is serving food until 9pm, but the The Trout (even nearer) is serving until 10.30pm, but we may need to book a table in advance.
