Possible catch-up Thames swim on Saturday morning 30 June 2012

I am planning to try to catch up the section from Culham Lock to Clifton Lock on Saturday morning before the planned swim from below Shillingford Bridge to Carmel College in the afternoon. Any takers? I suggest meeting at the Barley Mow car park at Clifton Hampden at 0945 ready to leave to walk up to Culham at 1000 hrs. Swim back to Clifton Lock, probably get back in there and swim on down to just downstream of the road bridge (saves walking back and shortens/simplifies the swim on to Days Lock next time if you also missed that. Hopefully time for a bit of lunch at the Barley Mow if desired before going to join the main group at Carmel College, provided there is still a good helping river flow. This is subject to river flows not being grossly excessive as there's a weir to avoid. As I am also planning to do both the weekend's scheduled swims I will be taking this one very easily with minimum effort! Please let me know by e-mail beforehand if you are intending to join me. Big Jump Oxford, Sunday, July 8th

It's that time of year again. The time when we think about our rivers, how they feed us and water us, give us buckets of pleasure and clean up our mess. The time of year when we celebrate the wonder of them by JUMPING IN! The Big Jump aims to reconcile people with their rivers. People across Europe, nay, the world, will be jumping in at the same time, 2pm, on Sunday, July 8th to show that rivers are for life, not just for effluent discharge and casual boating. There will be OSS Big Jumps across Britain. http://www.rivernet.org/bigjump/bigjump.htm OSS Oxford have *possibly the best river in the world* and therefore we return to Port Meadow for the third year in a row to jump, slide, flop, dive, walk into the Thames (known as Isis) in good company. If you are used to leaving your partner/family at home when you head off to the lake/river/pool, then this is the perfect time to introduce them to the wonderful world of water by bringing them along to watch or take part, gorge on barbecue, or just make their mind up depending on the weather. We will be jumping into an area of water that is not part of the main stream so has no strong flow and a beach for access, or a bridge for the brave. There will be a countdown and we will gather friends, relations, strangers, random passer-bys, cupcakes, sausages; and at 2pm, jump in. For those that fancy it, the Port Meadow stretch of river is perfect for any length of swim if you want a proper stretch after the jump. You will be in good company. In the event of bad weather, after swim munching may transfer to the pub, the Victoria Arms. So bring yourselves, your friends, food and drink for yourself or to share, and meet at the *Walton Well Road carpark* (see green arrow in link) on *Sunday July 8th, at 1.15 for a 2pm jump* at the bridge to Fiddler's Island (centre of map in link). Greeting to all Post Solstice Pagans, For everyone who missed seeing the sun rise on the Solstice it is now the meteorological season of summer - really. Thanks to Adam, another double swim weekend, with a camp at our new favourite location, Carmel College, is scheduled for the weekend of Saturday 30th June - Sunday 01st July. And as compensation for the disappointing Solstice there will be an - almost - full moon to howl at. You're welcome to come to either or both swims and camp or not as you feel inclined. The camp site does not have any facilities, bar access to a loo, so please come prepared for a degree of self sufficiency. We will be barbecuing on Saturday night so bring food and drink for yourselves and/or to share. The camp site is on the river and we hope - weather permitting - to have an evening dip/midnight swim by the light of the moon. The camp site is also the Saturday egress and Sunday ingress point for the swims. *Please let me know if you intend to camp.* (You may want to arrive early to pitch tents before the swim and will need directions to the pitches.) I am intending to try to do a catch-up swim between Bablock Hythe and Pinkhill Lock on Sunday morning, starting at Bablock Hythe at 10.00 hrs. I am intending to park on the east side at Bablock Hythe (at the end of the road down from Eaton - on the far side from the Ferryman pub) to facilitate walking back from Pinkhill Lock on the east (true right) bank of the river. Anyone wishing to join me will be most welcome but please bear in mind that I am a relatively slow swimmer. Regards Neil Richardson

I was supposed to be organising this at the end of June but chickened out. However, i still think that it is a great idea so long as there aren't too many of us. Late August over the bank holiday weekend or 1st/2nd September at full moon might be possibilities. Is anyone interested? Pam
