This is now on the OSS website OSS December Dip 2011 Saturday 3rd December 2011 The December Dip is back! Join hundreds as they take the plunge on Saturday 3rd December at the annual Outdoor Swimming Society's December Dip. Whether you're a seasoned wild swimmer, a newcomer looking to 'dip your toe' or just after the ultimate hangover cure, the art deco Parliament Hill Lido will be the place to get your fix. As well as your special seasonal swimming hat, expect some inspiring speakers, yummy hot food, a sneaky tipple, the celebrated hot tub and a full brass band to cheer you on, or should we say in. And then, as one, we'll take to the pool for a bracing couple of widths - guaranteed to get the blood pumping, skin tingling and make everyone high for the rest of the day, if not the weekend. Saturday 3rd December 11am-1pm Parliament Hill Lido, Gordon House Road, London, NW5 1LP Swimmers tickets cost £15, and spectators welcome for a donation on the door. It would be fun if we had a cohort from the Swim the Thames group. I will go so long as some others come along to freeze beside me. Pam

(Another) Swim #15 Catch-up

Hi Gang, A few of us are planning a catch-up of swim #15 (Cassington Cut to Kings Lock) on Saturday 22nd October, meeting at the car park of the Trout Inn at Godstow / Lower Wolvercote after lunch at a time to be confirmed. We will then do the swim as per the original plan before the more brave of us head off to camp at Northmoor lock before swim #16 on the 23rd. If you want to camp, please let me know ASAP so I can book the pitches. CD

Possible Thames catch-up swim, Sunday 16 October

Is anybody interested in doing a catch-up swim for OSS Swim the Thames swim #15 from Cassington Cut to the Trout Inn/Godstow Lock in whole or in part, or for any ONE of swims 12 to 14 ( between Northmoor Lock and Cassington Cut)? Having just recovered (I hope) from food poisoning I will be even slower than usual and cannot realistically do more than one section on this occasion. If interested, please let me know which section you want to do. I would envisage meeting at about 10.00. Regards Neil Richardson

Swim the Thames 2

*Dear all, Details of Swim #2 in OSS Oxford and Reading's Swim the Thames event series. This is the second swim of the OSS Swim the Thames event and we will pick up where we left off at Water Eaton footbridge. Hopefully by now the Thames will be deep enough to allow for more swimming than wading. The swim will combine swims 3 and 4 from Michael Worthington's book - 'I Love the Thames' - and will cover about 3km. If the going gets too heavy we can always stop part way and re-schedule the remainder for another day. We will be meeting at 10:30 on Sun 15 May 2011 in the Red Lion car park at Castle Eaton (marked by the green arrow). We have promised we will eat lunch there at the end of our swim. http://tinyurl.com/CastleEatonRL The swim will be from Water Eaton footbridge (marked by green arrow) http://tinyurl.com/WaterEatonFoB to Round House farm, which is upstream of the Red Lion. We can shuttle up to Water Eaton where there is limited parking for 3 cars - just - in a pull off from the road next to the entrance to the private fishermen's carpark (marked by green arrow). http://tinyurl.com/WaterEatonParking (If no fishermen are present the green field car park makes for a good outdoor changing room.) Walk up the road towards Castle Eaton and take the Bridle Path to Water Eaton footbridge. We will exit the river opposite the Round House farm campsite (marked by green arrow). http://tinyurl.com/RoundHouseExit Then walk down stream about 1km back to the Red Lion for lunch. The Red Lion is the first pub on the Thames and the grounds go down to the river so must be part of the Swim the Thames experience. Following our experience with swim (wade) #1 this is going to require a decent pair of 'feet' - a pair of surf boots with thick grip soles - but you can get cheap shoes of the kind that you can buy at the beach for very little and they'll do, either on their own, or with a pair of wetsuit socks which are again quite cheap. /The weather's lovely and may still be lovely next Sunday as we push on towards Oxford, hopefully arriving at the outskirts at Port Meadow by the end of October and before the first snow. In this penultimate leg to our intermediate goal of Oxford we will be swimming from Cassington Cut to Kings lock, both locations are a bit out in the sticks so we will have a pre-swim warm up walk, followed by the swim and concluding with a post swim warm down walk. This corresponds to the remainder of swim #27 in Michael Worthington's book, 'I Love the Thames' and will be around 3km. We're meeting in the car park of the Trout Inn at Godstow / Lower Wolvercote at 10:30am on Sunday 9th October 2011 - Green Arrow marks the spot: http://g.co/maps/6k5ub >From there we will walk along the Oxford Greenbelt Way that conveniently cuts the corner of the meandering Thames, skirts the Wytham Great Wood and joins the Thames path at our entry point opposite the Cassington Cut. We will pass the joining of the Evenlode tributary - will there be a cooling effect? Wooo Hoooo - we have upped the anti today on the freebies on the river stakes..... we were given Birthday Cake today from a lady who had turned 55 :o) I think that definitely tops tea and biscuits!!! Hope you all have a super sunny Sunday - Adam, Swan Wrangler, Stocks and I will see if we can get champagne and caviar today! Jo

Hi James Sunday's swim would probably be a perfect one for you - not too long, and both Adam and I are only moderate ability too (Adam is better moderate than I!). The only drawback is that we normally have ground support when it is the whole group, which means we can stop half way for tea and cake, but as this is just a catch up we won't have that. However, its going to be such a lovely day that am sure just a little break in the sun will be enough! So, the plan is that we will meet in the little car park just after the Swinford Toll Bridge (5p at the ready!), on the pub side of the river, at 11.00. The car park costs £2. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=444500&y=208500&z=120&sv=swinford&st=3… We will get changed there, walk up to the start - about a 20 min walk; swim down and then walk back up from the exit point too. Its all on grass paths once we are down by the river, however you might want to bring some shoes that you could leave at Eynsham Lock to walk back across the toll bridge. Adam will have a vacpack thing for his car key, so we will put all keys in his car for safety. Apart from that, don't think there is anything else you need to know. Love lidos? Hate low-lifes? Saltdean & Bude campaigns

Hello swimmers, As it's getting cooler (haha) and we have more time on our hands, and more money in our pockets (hahaha), here are some suggestions for your newfound wealth and spare time. Or perhaps you have some expertise you could share with campaigners, or maybe you just love signing petitions.... The Bude seapool in Cornwall is a lovely pool on the beach at Bude. Recently the Council who previously administered the pool decided they could no longer operate it. It is being transferred to a community group. If you fancy lending them some support, you can join the campaign for 10 quid a year. They are also looking for fundraisers, people with experience, committee members etc. http://www.budeseapool.net/ On the gentler south coast, Saltdean Lido is still under threat of development by a dastardly businessman. You can join that campaign too, but in the immediate future, can you give a minute to sign a petition on Brighton & Hove's website. http://present.brighton-hove.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?ID=236&RPID=202… And if you happen to be free on Wednesday... "Wednesday 5th October between from 5.10pm - 5.45pm. This day will be a red letter day for the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign. We need your help to show once again that people care about the future of the lido and its buildings. Councillors and officials from Brighton & Hove City Council are visiting the lido to meet with our campaign and various other community groups. At this meeting we will be insisting again that the Council start legal proceedings to get the lease back from Mr Audley, the property speculator lease-holder. Please come and stand outside the entrance to the community centre (library entrance) on *Weds Oct 5 from 5.10pm - 5.45pm.* Feel free to make a placard – we will make some – and come ready to shout “People Power.
