Linux and USB?

Please could anyone shed some light on this for me. I borrowed a digital camera and wanted to download its shots into my Linux box (Redhat 7.1 2.4.2 kernel P166 64Mb RAM). I hunted around and managed to find a place on the linux-usb.org site where several people had managed this feat with the same camera that I'm using (and using all sorts of kernel versions such as 2.0.x, 2.2.x, 2.4.x), which is a Fuji finepix 1400 Zoom with 8Mb memory card. However, I simply cannot get it to work for me. I modprobe the usb-storage, usb-core and usb-uhci modules, as per instructions and they all appear to load, according to lsmod. SCSI support is already loaded. When I then plug the camera in and switch it on, there's disk activity and files appear in /proc/scsi. So then I do the "mount /dev/sda /mnt/camera" bit and I always get a message that /dev/sda isn't a block device or sda doesn't exist. I've tried variations, like "mount -t msdos ..." or "mount -t vfat ..." but it makes no difference. It seems that the USB link works but it all falls over when it comes time to access the mythical SCSI emulation or whatever it is to read the image files. Has anyone ever succeeded in this? I'd appreciate any guidance that's going - thanks! Gerald.

Now when you boot up, it SHOULD go to the normal text login screen. Well - it does for me.... Someone else on this list will most likely have a better way of doing what you want. Hope that helps? Hi, Red Lodge is quite a distance from Cambridge, especially with the strong culture of walking/cycling in this city, which is the main reason that we currently meet in such a central location. I enjoy a trip out though. I will be happy to drive over, so if anyone else wants to come you are welcome to a lift - I can take up to four other people. The proposed time and day is the same time we usually meet, so perhaps those going could meet at CB2 and go on from there? Sorry, I just saw Convoy on TV the other week ;-) The first message that made it to our list suggested that ALUG were thinking of having a meeting in Cambridge at some point. I was just wondering, if ALUG has members in Cambridge that want to meet, why don't they come along to Cambridge LUG meetings? Just curious. Oh, and is it really going to be in the truck stop? Linux chat and an all day breakfast, cool. Don't know what the truckers will think mind you :-) Best regards, Mark. I'm not sure we'd want to hold a meeting in Cambridge, as I don't think we'd want to tread on Cam-LUG's toes, but if we could guest at a Cam-LUG meet, that would be great. Hi, Someone's email provider doesn't like Ricardo's new mail provider. While I think that someone really should fix the line wrap on the webmail he's using, I'm not bouncing every email from him like the following one. I've sent a few copies as requested, but unless anyone can tell me how to fix this, I'm going to seek and destroy whatever subscription is causing this. MDK 8.0 (X 4.0.3, kernel 2.4.1, Geforce 2 MX DDR), nvidia drivers installed. I didn't compile, but used the RPMs and followed the "if you're using Mandrake 8.0" instructions. I've just d/l the tar.gz's , but compiling on this system always seems to take so much time.... (in the sense that it never works 1st time, only on about th 10th time). Err... mine appears to be a tab near the top that says DVD, so I clicked on that. Press the play button, and it hangs.... Did you do this?
