ipchains replacement

Hi Folks, I am a newbie home based Linux user with dial-up access to the internet. Up until now, because of the small, infrequent, amount of time I am actually connected to the internet, I have simply been ensuring that I always log on as a normal user (rather than root) to protect my PC, however I have recently been wondering whether it would be wise to install some kind of protection for my PC. Looking in my little Linux text book it would appear that "ipchains" would probably be sufficient for my needs (rather than setting up a dedicated firewall), however, when I try to use ipchains I get the error message: ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel. The kernel I am using is 2.4.10 and I am wondering if this error message is hinting that ipchains has now been superseded. Is there a modern replacement for ipchains? If so then what is it and where could I find some info on setting it up to protect my PC? Thanks, Ian.

Gateway problems

I have a machine running Debian 2.2 which can be connected to the internet via a modem. This is part of a small network. One of the other machines on the network can use the above machine as a gateway and connect successfully to web sites using a browser when running Linux. If the same (secondary) machine is running Windows 95 it cannot connect to any web sites via the Linux gateway machine although the gateway address is set correctly in the network configuration on the secondary machine. Can anyone please offer any pointers? Barry Samuels

Debian: Configuring Gnome

Hello! I have installed Gnome from the official release CDROMs but I cannot get the standard desktop with The "foot" icon, bottom bar, panels etc. I get a custom "debian" background, and menus that appear when I right-click the desktop. There is a workspace icon in the top right-hand corner. Also I cannot change the window manager via Gnome control center, or find a way of adding items to the menus. I do not know whether the problem is in the window manager or the Gnome configuration. Does anyone know how I can install a clean "standard" version of Gnome? Regards Chris Lale

Sounds like you don't actually have gnome running, but only a window manager. Don't know much about debian's layout, but if its anything like slackware then you might need to change the link in /etc/X11/xinit/xinit which is prolly just pointing to a window manager config file. Relink it to gnome, start X, use gnome to load the window manager in gnome config. Portables

All, I am looking for a portable device which I can use for uni which has the following features 1) SSh client 2) Qwerty keyboard 3) PCMCIA slot for 802.11b card I have looked at either a cheap or second hand laptop running bsd or a compaq Ipaq or possibley somthing combled togther from PC104 boards. What would people suggest? It just needs to be reasonably cheap and have the ability to ssh into my shell account. Thanks D

dns and self-torture

Thanks for the help on setting up the home mail. I had a reply to Ricardo on setting up a DNS server (to do it the hard way) along the lines of nettle whips and sack-cloth, but I've been getting in a slight muddle with elm, and swapping alug addresses, so it got lost along the way somewhere. Jen.

USB CD Writer...

knews and utf-8

Hi, I'm having problems getting knews to display utf-8-encoded posts properly. It will do utf-7 and latin-3 with no problem, but does anyone know the magic incantations for utf-8? Failing that, I guess I'll build libslang-utf8 and slrn-utf8 or whatever they're called. Or maybe I'll get fed up enough to upgrade to testing. -- MJR
