Red Hat 7.2 newbie

Hi , im a newbie to Linux and i heard you could run windows appz in Linux by using a Piece of software called Wine, I not sure if already have it on Redhat 7.2 so if any one could tell me where to find it i would be very greatful and if some one could give me information on how to install software then would be great too, Everytime i install RPM files i get a failed message so maybe im downloading the wrong drivers or wrong kernal verison,im new to linux so i dont know much about installing software, i know alittle about the Rpm -i command and thats all i know so any help to the above questions would be a bouns. Anyone used Mindi ?

Since upgrading my machine and operating system I have been trying to create a rescue disc set. My trusty old Tomsrtbt no longer works because it doesn't support my new SCSI adapter. I have just tried Mindi and after booting the first disc it stops with the following messages: inserting floppy driver for 2.2.20 unable to get major 2 for floppy inserting floppy driver for 2.2.20 unable to get major 2 for floppy inserting floppy driver for 2.2.20 unable to get major 2 for floppy inserting floppy driver for 2.2.20 unable to get major 2 for floppy mounting /tmp/tmpfs ... Fatal error! Failed. UPGRADE YOUR RAM! Please! Dude, your computer is dying of thirst over here .. I think that the second message is a consequence of the first and is not actually due to a lack of ram as this machine has 256MB. Could anyone please explain what the first four identical messages mean? I did, as required, build floppy support into the kernel together with ramdisc and initrd support. It would be reassuring to have a rescue disc of some sort once again. Barry Samuels

Can anyone help with a KDE2/Debian 'Testing' error ?

I have recently upgraded my Debian Potato system to 'Testing' and, as that includes KDE2, KDE1 has been upgraded to KDE2 (2.2.2-14). In trying to run some applications (only a few) I get the following message: relocation error: /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefined symbol: styleChange__8QTool It's always the same message with the same symbol. I am a long retired person and began delving into computers in 1979 with a Tandy TSR1 - I then lived in Australia and wrote a programme in Basic to do the accounts for a garage I was running there. I used LDOS which was far superior to MSDOS 2.11 that I had to switch to when I bought an Apricot. I am not mad keen on either the ethics or practice of Mr Gates (nor that of Murdoch either) but I am aware that my efforts against them will make little difference. My first purchase of Linux was some 6 years ago (SuSE), the the second about 3 (Definite) and the third 2 months ago - SuSE again and, unlike those previous conversion efforts, I intend to make it this time. This email comes to you via the "auld enemy" because I have problems, but they will be overcome! I realize that for a while I might have to put up with using both systems, but I like the idea of choice, and not being dominated by the practices of one man. Kind Regards Leonard Chandler

newbie question - getting the latest PHP 4 and MySQL for Suse 7.1

I'm having problems figuring out how to get hold of suitable packages of the latest PHP and MySQL for Suse (7.1) Can't see anything obvious on the Suse site. If I simply go the PHP and MySQL sites for the downloads I figure this may mess up the Suse configurations for these applications, upset it's YAST package manager and generally blow up in my face (?) ...... On a different but related note I see a lot of stuff (such as RPMs, tutorials) that directly relates to Red Hat. Consequently, as a total novice I wondering whether I would be better off moving over to Red Hat ...ok, Suse was painless to install but I'm feeling somewhat paralysed now by not wanting to (at this stage at least) install from non-packaged sources. You may find it useful to save a copy of the outputs of dmesg and lsmod before you install the new kernel- useful in choosing modules, etc. during the actual install, and useful for troubleshooting afterwards.
