Weekly IRC reminder

This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.openprojects.net in the #alug channel, you can take a look at www.openprojects.net to get more info on the openprojects network. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server uk.openprojects.net" or "/server eu.openprojects.net" and "/join #alug". Popular IRC clients include tkirc, bitchx, xchat and EPIC on Unix, and Mirc under windows. Here are some links to help you get started with irc. E-Mail To /dev/null

Hi All, I get tons of spam in my mailbox, mostly from job sites who continue to send me job listings months after I found a job and I've supposedly unsubscribed from their "service". These e-mails can be anything up to 200k in size and since I'm on dial up I was looking for a better solution than just filtering and sending to trash in K-Mail since I still have to download the things currently. Is there any way I can get the mail headers first and then just trash the e-mail or do I really have to download these things? Ta, Matt

Sound problem

Hi, I am trying to get sound going on my IS 639 chip set based PC. I am running RH7.2 which detected my SIS accelerated audio and loaded the 'appropriate' modules. But no sound. Anyway, I have tried lots of things but basically I am stuck. The current situation is sndconfig detects the chips OK and the modules soundcore, trident and ac_97 have loaded OK. I tried cat /usr/local/sndconfig/sample.au >/dev/dsp but it just there doing nothing till I kill it. Yes, I have run up a mixer and made sure the volume controls are turned up. I was thinking maybe I needed to pass some parameters to the card but when I tried to add an options trident io=0x220 line to modules.conf I get an invalid option error. I even looked at the trident.c source from which it is apparent this module works for four different card types so maybe there is an option I need to select here. So what do I do next? Ian

linux laptops

I'm looking for a linux laptop, medium spec. I want to pay roughly around £800. I'm intrigued by www.dnuk.com, since they offer laptops with linux preinstalled, but their prices seem a little higher than I can afford. Has anyone got any tips? Should I go for a second hand laptop instead and struggle with the install myself? binary symbols

Hi list, I'm constantly opening binary files using cat from the command line by mistake, then after quitting out the console displays all text in weird symbols. Is there anyway to reset the console when this happens? Thanks, Jen.

I have to say Rob's demo of OS X really made my jaw drop. In terms of functionality,ease of use and integration, it is exactly what people want. I think Linux has a lot to learn from OS X, certainly if anyone wants it to work as a successful desktop OS. I don't think that it's any coincidence that most of the people I have met who use linux are 1)in education/research, 2) hackers (I mean programmers), 3) people who work in technical jobs, network admins etc. 4) people who have *time*. And I would admit this; if my girlfriend needed to buy a computer, I would recommend an iMac. She is artistic, not technical, she doesn't enjoy hacking computers, and she wants to take it out of the box, connect it up and start using it. In respects to business/research use, no it is not abnormal at all. Other than my left of left wing politics, my frustrations with administering Lotus Notes/SQL Server/NT, led me to Linux. I was never disputing that. Most of this tweaking wouldn't be needed if you could buy a pooter with a GNU/Linux installation pre-installed and preconfigured for your hardware. What I am disputing is the assumption that everyone will find GNU/Linux easy to use, install and maintain. I am only now confident after what, 7 months of using it. I install debian, and realise I'm gonna have to spend more free time learning *that*, cos everything is sufficiently different from my last distro.
