Getting programs to run

I've loaded a program on here from a CD and was using KDE. Although it showed up in my packages I can't figure out how to get it to run! I was going to try 'run' but I'm not sure what to type in. I tried just the name of the program but that didn't work. I'm using Gnome more and more, think I like it better, and Gnome shows an icon for the program but when I click on it nothing happens. What've I done or not done properly? Also, when you're installing a program and it states you need other files, does that mean for certain that they aren't on here? Where do I go searching for these missing files? Thanks, moving along in baby steps *g* Kelly

Choice of E-mail Clients + Stuff

Canon S400 printer now works a treat. The combination of Gimp-Print + CUPS + espgs will cope with an amazing list of different printers (espgs is a specially tweaked version of ghostscript that 'knows' about CUPS and Gimp-Print supplies all the printer definitions). More good news after visiting www.linmodems.org I discovered that the chipset in my internal modem card (not a 'proper' modem but a so-called winmodem) is one that has a set of Linux drivers available (I have the Lucent chipset see http://www.heby.de/ltmodem). After studying the Linmodem, Modem and PPP howto's, I installed PPP and the drivers plus the Gnome PPP application and applet and (after an initial bit of hassle with PAP) it now all works a treat!! I was able to happily dial into my ISP and browse the web with Opera. :o) :o) :o) Interestingly I think web browsing seems faster under GNU/Linux than it is under Windows(2K). Perhaps there's just less OS overhead getting in the way?. Now the questions; 1) What security precautions should I be taking now I can connect to the internet? Can anyone recommend some useful resources I should study? Any basic initial measures I should take? 2) Is it worth reviewing the PPP and IP setups with a view to optimising the modem performance? or are any improvements likely to be marginal? 3) Can anyone recommend some mail clients that work with Gnome? There seem to be loads on Sourceforge and Freshmeat. Some guidance with narrowing down the list would be most helpful. 4) I'd also like to migrate my existing M$ Outlook mailbox over to the new client. Has anyone ever done this? Is it possible? It might be worth digging a bit deeper into the 'contract' The reason why they dont like you to use Linux is becaus Linux tends to use Masquerading rather than the Proxy that is common with W$. With Proxy they can tell how many PC's you are using on the inside at any time. Its not so easy with Linux routing/firewall so you may actually be in breach of their T&C's using it and you may be cut off as a result! That may be 'urban paranoia' but, as Laurie said, they all seem to insist on w$ on the inside. This may be due to the fact the sales staff are taps but with consume.net ramping up I think not. DVD Hardware Decoders

I have a P821 DVD Decoder card which is based on the ALI M3309 chipset and I was wondering if its compatible for linux its old (1999) and they dont make anymore drivers for it. Using NTL Broadband with Linux

Are there any ALUG members on the list who have their Linux network connected to the internet via NTL Broadband? An NTL sales rep rang me last night trying to get me to sign up for their broadband service. Unfortunately I think he was just reading a pre-prepared script as he was unable to answer many technical questions. In particular he was adamant that their cable modem box needed to be connected to a PC running Windows 98 or higher (*NOT* Linux). Has anyone managed to get round this as I would prefer my firewall (the PC on my network which will actually be connected to the NTL box) to continue to be Linux based rather trying to find a Windows based solution. installing from cover CDs

Hi All, I know that cover CD's seem to cause much furrowing of brows but..... Although I have been toying with linux for nearly a year, I have just used RedHat up until now. So I thought that I might get a lightweight distro from the covers of Linux Format. Gentoo and The LRS distros look interesting, but how are they installed? If I burn the iso image onto CD what do I do next?. When I installed RedHat I remember that I had to make a floppy with the boot image to launch the installer, but where would I get that from for these OSs? Although I've looked at the disc and mags there does not seem to be an idiots guide to this (which is what I need). I like to find things out for myself if possible - but don't know where to go from here. what I need is a simple instruction list something like.. 1) burn the gentoo iso image file onto a CD 2) get *****.*** file onto a floppy from??? 3) boot using floppy 4) mount CD 5) start install can anyone help? Some networking questions

The story so far.... OK so as some of you are aware I have a multi box, multi OS network at home running various Unix, Win 3.11, 9x and NT systems which consists of between 2 and 8 nodes at any one time at the moment. The network will never have more than 10 boxes (rash statement I know). I have loads of questions about the best way to get this up and running so here is some info to give some background on what I have and what I need. The LAN is connected to the outside world via an ISDN router which has a fixed IP address of 192.168.0.50 the rest of the nodes have fixed addresses in the range 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.10 and a sub net mask of 255.255.255.0. The Win boxes can all see each other and can print to each others printers via MS file and Printer sharing. One Linux box can be seen the Windows boxen via a very rudimentary Samba set up but Linux cannot see, share files or print to the Win boxen. The *nix boxes can all ping one another but I don'tknow how to share files or printers between them. What I'd like to do is have one Linux box as my gateway to the net acting as a mail server, firewall and maybe a web cache for all the other nodes on the LAN and to be able to print and share files from/to any box or printer. I'm presuming that because its just a small workgroup peer to peer network that I won't be needing a DNS server an will keep the IP addresses staticly assigned. What is the best way to setup a mail server, I have multiple accounts? Fetchmail/sendmail or are there better alternatives? What is the easiest way to share files between Linux boxes? -- Cheers, BJ
