SUSE 9.1 Personal Free Download
by Ben Francis 21 Jun '04

21 Jun '04

distrowatch.com is reporting (http://www.distrowatch.com/01692) that SUSE 9.1 Personal ISO is now Available for Free Download from SUSE's FTP server and mirrors. There's nothing official on this from SUSE as far as I can tell though, but it seems to be intentional! Anyone heard any more on this? I may be giving SUSE a go for the first time if I can get it downloaded. tola ^/. P.S. it always makes me laugh when I see "SUSE LINUX (formerly SuSE Linux)" -- Ben "tola" Francis http://hippygeek.co.uk ---------------------------------------------------- COMPUTER SUPPORT for small businesses and home users http://tolatech.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------

How to add a DVD writer?
by Chris Green 21 Jun '04

21 Jun '04

If I want to install a DVD writer onto an existing Slackware 9.1 system what do I need to do to get it to work? Are there any good HowTos? (The system already has a CD which I will be replacing with the DVD writer) -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk)

Red Hat Registration & apm
by R.F.Jarvis 19 Jun '04

19 Jun '04

Hello, can anyone help to solve 2 problems I have with red hat 9 1. I cannot register for updates. The first step (privacy statement) remains blank with the cursor showing busy. The next set of steps are filled in with the required information, but finishes with the error, problem registering user name. 2. If I use the apm command to suspend or standby, the screen shuts down then immediately turns itself back on, then the terminal window continually writes, root @ localhost root, until it is full. Then all programs do not respond, then eventually the whole screen is locked so the computer has to be turned off. Bob Jarvis. (New to Linux)

Samba quandry
by Charles Garcia-Tobin 19 Jun '04

19 Jun '04

Hello there I have two linux boxes running samba. Both have the same workgroup. On both machines I have user 'charles' with the same smb password. However to see each other's user shares I am asked to log in. How do I make the smb server accept the 'charles' from the remote machine as the local charles? On window shares, without domains, matching username/passwords is usually the only requirement. Cheers Charles

Could you clarify this please? Is there a version 4 of XF86 in 'Woody', I have both 'Woody' and 'Sarge'. Debian is renowned for its stability, and obviously the current/stable version must be the most stable. I would, if I could get X to work with my graphics card use 'Woody', but to do that I need version 4. -- John Seago Linux User #219566 (http://counter.li.org)
