Red Hat Registration & apm

Hello, can anyone help to solve 2 problems I have with red hat 9 1. I cannot register for updates. The first step (privacy statement) remains blank with the cursor showing busy. The next set of steps are filled in with the required information, but finishes with the error, problem registering user name. 2. If I use the apm command to suspend or standby, the screen shuts down then immediately turns itself back on, then the terminal window continually writes, root @ localhost root, until it is full. Then all programs do not respond,then eventually the whole screen is locked so the computer has to be turned off. Bob Jarvis. (New to Linux)

Samba quandry

Hello there I have two linux boxes running samba. Both have the same workgroup. On both machines I have user 'charles' with the same smb password. However to see each other's user shares I am asked to log in. How do I make the smb server accept the 'charles' from the remote machine as the local charles? On window shares, without domains, matching username/passwords is usually the only requirement. Cheers Charles

When switching between users you will be prompted for that user password, unless you are calling the command from root. If you are logged on to your Xwindow system as john and you open an xterm and type "su" you are effectively switching from user john to root - you should be asked for the root password here. Type it in, and if the $ sign at the prompt becomes a # sign, you are now root. The command "whoami" will also let you know which user you currently are. sudo is a program which will allow you to run certain commands as root without having to switch user - so if you install sudo and edit the config file to say that john can run such-and-such a program, you can do so as user john, by putting the command "sudo" before the main command. It can be dangerous to charge around your system as superuser :-))) so it is a useful little program to allow certain tasks as a mortal. Debian Install 4th Attempt

I retried this morning, gave it the name 'debian.org' when asked, used tasksel(?) to select Desktop, office and not much else that I can remember, used 'advanced' for the Xserver, and then as the dog had to go to the Vets and me to the Doctor later, Alison took me to the Post Office to collect my pension and when I came home there was a screen which I 'OK'd' and lo and behold everything works! What I didn't do was anything to do with my internet connection so the problems must be caused by my giving wrong answers to those. I know the number, user name, and password for my connection to my ISP so it must be the ISO code for UK/GB and the county number. Now I know its my fault I have another go at installing and write down the questions I can't answer or seem to be getting wrong and see if I can find the right answers, I will report my success of failure. -- John Seago Linux User #219566 (http://counter.li.org)

Introduction to ALUG

Hello, Since first registering on 6th June I have been reading the flow of e-mails in order to understand how ALUG operates. I am a bit confused over the two e-mail addresses function (main@... and main-admin@...) However, I am a self taught home computer owner that has never liked how Microsoft Windows works as an O.S or as a company. I knew of Linux for some time and several months ago obtained the system by accident being free with Linuxuser & developer (redhat 9 ) I successfully installed redhat 9 and have a dual boot system with Windows XP with no conflicts. It took some time to find a modum but succeeded after buying Red Hat Linux 9 for dummies and Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed(a mighty tome). I don't know anyone who knows of linux and I have developed several problems that I cannot resolve, so need some information to enable me to rectify the problems. I have 5 grandchildren who use computers and wish to introduce them to linux O.S. Bob

I have answered all these posts in order as they appeared on todays digest. Thank you all those who have offered help advice and suggestions.
