If the server gets owned and you get fired then a tribunal will be on your side for 'constructive dismissal' and you'll get a few pennies for a nice self-training course. --------------------------------------------------- On the subject of passwords there is almost no safe/achievable way of doing this. If theres money involved I'd ensure one to one communication via snail mail with signatures - get them to agree to your site terms and conditions before you let them use it - if you are providing passwords. Or let them register themselves but again you'll need paper proof of their ID before you match them to any 'account'. Well, I'm writing this using my RedHat box.... I had no joy with Kppp. There were no man pages, and the KDE help didn't.;-) I then tried rp3. If I went thru rp3, I had no luck (I had ppp0 and loopback as choices). Going through the configurator through *that* didn't help, even if I added a new account. I then invoked rp3-config directly, set up a new interface and voila... seems that you have to do it directly! (it's the only thing I did different, and that's a bug IMO) So now all I need to do is put my favourite progs on the RH machine. Many thanks for the help! I'm trying out RedHat 7.2 and stumbled upon 2 problems relating to ppp, specifically kppp. 1) although I can connect using kppp from KDE, there appears to be no data transfer when I attempt to look at a website. (I suspect that I have to manually add my DNS servers' IP addresses, perhaps I accidentally put in my own IP address as the primary DNS server or something during installation-duh) 2) OK, if I do run kppp as someone other than root, it asks for root's password. How could I set it up so that I don't need to run a connection as root? It doesn't do it in Mandrake. I am actually gonna write a little report comparing my experiences with Mandrake and Redhat once I've given RH enough chance- all from the POV of a newbie and "Harry Home-User". (I'll post the URL when it is done). NO NO NO NO NO NO.. I don't think you don't want to do that. And you certainly don't want to tell the world! Look at an automated password generator like apg. It will automatically generate passwords for you. I just read this on NewsForge http://www.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=02/01/19/1848219&mode=thread and I can't see if it's good for the Open Source community and Linux or not. Looks like if it were to happen the web would be a more friendly place for the non-MS browser user, with browser dependant sites having to make themselves readable with (insert your browser of choice here). The worrying thing is that RedHat would, just as someone stated on NewsForge "just wither on the vine". It's an interseting prospect though the possibility of all those AOL cds having a distro on them now that would be a promotion and a half for Linux. Cheers, BJ

I remember a while ago that people were posting details of their current computers. I didn't do so because I knew that I would be updating my machine in the near future. So here are the details: =================================================================== Antec SX1240 full tower case. Good quality case with some nifty features such as being able to open the side of the case using a handle. One disadvantage is that there are so many cooling holes and slots the new machine is now more noisy than the old one. Hard drive noise mostly. Tyan Thunder K7 mainboard. 2 x 1.3 GHz athlon processors, 2 x LAN sockets, 512 MB ram, Winbond hardware monitoring, ATI Rage graphics chip. ===================================================================== Into this go my Adaptec 2940AU SCSI adapter, 3 x IBM SCSI hard drives together with the SCSI Tape Streamer, SCSI CD Writer, SoundBlaster and Matrox graphics card all from my old machine (not using the onboard graphics chip - only 4MB memory). Unfortunately I could not include my trusty old ISA 56k modem because the new board is PCI only and I don't like external modems - too untidy. So what does clever clogs do? He buys a PCMCIA to PCI adapter that will take an existing PCMCIA modem after researching that such a combination will work only to find that, although it does work, the maximum data transfer rate is 1.6k!!! The manufacturers of the adapter, Elan Digital Systems in Britain, tell that it won't work properly on my board without a BIOS or kernel modification because the bridge chip on the card is not being assigned a PCI interrupt. I'm just repeating what I've been told as it's way over my head anyway. I have emailed Tyan to ask if such modifications are likely to be made in the near future and am waiting for an answer. Does anyone know of a PCI modem that will be guaranteed to work with Debian Potato? As they are cheap it might do as a short term solution. I also replaced my dead UPS with a new Belkin UPS and Belkin provide Linux monitoring software. Good for them! The new setup has been running only a few days but during installation and testing I've had to reboot several times and occasionally after KDE(1) has started I've noticed that whatever was displayed when it was last closed down is opened twice. So I have two of everything. It does not happen every time and it didn't happen on the old machine. Still using the same hard drives and operating system! Oh! One minor problem. I cannot get any sound from the speaker when dialling. 'cardctl config' tells me that the speaker is enabled and the volume in kppp is set to medium. Any ideas on that? Maybe it's this lack of a PCI interrupt that's causing this. So there it is. A fast machine with what is effectively a 16k modem. Bah Humbug! Barry Samuels

If it's only for some, you could try as script containing: cat fileofusernames | ( \ while read user do echo "$user@otherdomain" > ~$user/.forward done ) but I'd check and test that first ;-) -- MJR

dpgk nightmares

Hi list This is what i hate most. I want to install a driver that i can only find in rpm (I'm using debian) I installed alien I can't install the driver as it requires a later version of rpm I can only find a deb version of the later rpm in testing so download the deb package I need about a billion dependent packages, so download I try to dpkg -i them all I get stuck on installing libdb3 as it conflicts with libdb2 I can't remove libdb2 because loads of stuff depends on it. grrrrrrr, Perhaps there is a one-line two-word command someone can help me with that will cure my woes? I'm sure i'm doing this the hard way. Thanks, Jenny.

Linux/Modem problem

My neighbour is running Windows 98 and wants to have a play with Linux. I have set up Debian (Progeny version) on his machine but cannot get the modem to work. He has an external US Robotics 5630 (56k) which works perfectly with windows. After running pppconfig to set up a connection and using pon to dial out I can see the ATZ sent with an OK response from the modem then I see the dial string and immediately the modem returns NO CARRIER. There is a very short burst of noise from the modem before the NO CARRIER message but it won't dial. After this even the initialisation string has no effect until the power to the modem has been turned off and on again. I have never had modem problems with Linux before and I'm stumped. Going back into Windows (now wash your hands), after trying to dial out through Linux, the damn thing works perfectly. Some advice would be heavily appreciated. Barry Samuels

What dir are you building in? dont think itll matter but ive herded of it messing up system header files that need to stay the same or somthing. I'm hoping to build at least one "Update" CD of the entire collection of Updates from a number of mirror and "value added" sites later today: For RH7.2 in addition to the RH 6.2 custom variant (Eridani) that I usually work with. With luck, I'll also have a gash RH7.2 running to test all the rpms on the CD, later this evening. Anyone want a copy - for pick-up at CB2 CLUG tomorrow? Same basis as when Tom provided CDs: Cover a CD cost, or bring a replacement 1st quality 700M 80min blank CDR with you... Eventually, I intend to rebuild the Install CD to use the update rpm packages rather than the RedHat October 2001 CD packages. For some reason, OpenSSH has lagged behind the times, but stunnel is recent enough. I will include the v3 OpenSSH rpms, but please bear in mind that these are not "official" RedHat. A considerable number of bug fixes went into 3.0.2p1-1, and I won't have an opportunity to check rpm upgrades before Sunday. The "official" 2.9p2-12 Redhat updates are also there, of course. I don't know what has been back-ported by RedHat into their 2.9 portable OpenSSH rpms. May be able to squeeze the latest KOffice and KDE rpms on an 80min 700M CDR, but no promises. I'll see how much time I have, and how much spare space on the CD is available after the RedHat update directories fill up. My interest in RH7.2 is purely a stepping stone to the fifth generation selinux LSM secure operating system project. Anoyone interested in obtaining a Redhat updates CDR - email me so I know how many to burn before I leave early on Sunday morning. If I run into any snags I'll email to the list again. --James

It has to be an IT job and can be anything... programming, web design, network maintenance. As long as its not making people tae or coffee and it involves a computer its good. May be if your making a system that makes tea or coffee and its computer controlled it would be ok ;). oh I'm a BTEC National diploma year 2 student also doing a Cisco CCNA. Its kind of short notice as you can see from below but my last organisation turned round to me and said their department was too full to accommodate me. Which is fine to have left me with out a placement and not much time to find one. Start date: Monday 28 January End date: Thursday 8 February Oh and Kings Lynn, Swafham, Dereham and Norwich kinda way would be good. I cant drive but busses are very helpful(and slow) . Something is killing my box each evening, need help

Hi all, I'm writing this for some help in tracking down whatever is causing my machine to lock up once every day, usually in the evening between 6pm and midnight. The hardware: AMD K6-2 300, 256MB RAM, 40Gig ATA100 hard disk with all partitions ext3. The hardware has not altered in several months, and the computer has not been moved in an equally long period. The software is Debian Sid. I had this problem, dist-upgraded and it still occurs. I am inside X when the crash happens, I have not tried closing X down for the day to see if it repeats. I am running kernel 2.4.17, and whilst I did have crashes in previous kernels (I jumped from .13) they were not daily. The crash occurs at random. I am not doing anything heavy at the time nor anything common. Today's crash happened whilst scrolling a webpage in Galeon. Yesterday it occured whilst flicking tabs in XChat. The screen freezes. Gkrellm stops updating all indicators including the time. The mouse pointer works, but does not update window focus, and the mouse buttons have no effect. The keyboard freezes. Hitting the numlock key does not change the state of the light. Ctrl+alt+F1-4 has no effect, nor does ctrl+alt+backspace/delete. I can however use alt+sysreq+s to sync the disk, and then use the machine's reset button to perform a reboot. Works a treat when used with ext3 :). The modem apparently continues downloading data and getting irc traffic. I do not have other equipment with which I can log in to this machine to attempt any form of 'rescue'. Looking at /var/log/kernel.log I see nothing out of the ordinary. It shows nothing, then the disk sync, then the reboot. So I'm looking for ideas as to what to look at/for, tests to run, etc. Any ideas? :-) Thanks. James Green

I had a similar problem twice: 1) after installing nVidia drivers (maybe it's an X/videocard driver prob) 2) It'd just randomly do it, even in (cough cough) that *other* OS (splutter) so I attributed it to hardware. It seemed to fix itself. I'd go with Mark, maybe focussing on X and/or video drivers, and then going for the kernel. Summary of what I said on IRC: If you're tracking sid closely, you should be talking to Debian lists to cure this. If they coincided with the kernel change, try another kernel. Doubt that helped, but there you have it: replace bits until it stops crashing. Slow, tedious, but will work eventually. -- MJR

RH 7.2 problem

I have RH 7.2 installed which provideds a couple of icons on the KDE desktop for mounting/unmounting CD and floppy drives. I have recently been trying to compile myself a kernel as yet without success. Home Highway was installed yesterday. It's good! Forgive the long message and newbie questions following - I have tried to figure this out and have looked around the net and the system and *have* got it working after a fashion - using it now in fact - but its a terrible lash-up at the moment. So I'd really appreciate any advice and comments on what follows, including where else to look for answers since I don't really know where to go next. 1. OK, I am using Mandrake 8.0 and it hasn't completely recognised my internal isdn card (Asuscom ISDNink 128). I see something about insmod hisax failing during boot. I looked at dmesg but did not see these messages - should I be looking in /var somewhere? 2. But if I give this command (found in the documentation) then I can use it: modprobe hisax type=35 protocol=2 id=hisax Presumably I should be able to use this information to edit a config file somewhere to have it happen during boot? No idea where to find it though - there seem to be an awful lot of start-up files and I clearly have not found the correct one yet. 3. Finally, what app is recommended to dial an ISDN call in KDE (or on the command line)? I was using kppp for the modem but is does not see ippp0 - should it be able to find this or does it only recogniise the serial ports? At the moment I am having to use something called the Mandrake Control Centre to go to the network settings to find a place to dial out on the isdn. It is very long-winded, clunky and obviously just not the right way to do it. Also, MCC requires root password so I am not sure if I am dialing out with root privs or with my user privs. I know its a mandrake thing but any informed guesses? TIA Syd

Hi all, I'm having problems with apt.... I was trying to install something (apt-get install libiodbc2) and it couldn't find stuff so i ran apt-get update. . ALUG Linux Distro CDs

Hi folks, It occurs to me that we don't have anything on the web site, nor do we have any proper mechanism (other than at meetings where copies can be made) for folk to get hold of Linux distributions. I tend to use the Linux Emporium (http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk) for the majority of my purchases and they are very good. However, I would like to offer the ALUG slightly cheaper discs which I will burn myself and post to anybody that wants them. CDs will cost £2.00, with postage and packing for any number of CDs at £1.50. 1) Red Hat Linux 7.2 (2 x CDs) - £4.00 2) Mandrake Linux 8.1 (3 x CDs) - £6.00 3) Debian Linux Potato 2.2rev4 (3 x CDs) - £6.00 4) Smoothwall Firewall 0.99 (1 x CD) - £2.00 5) FreeBSD 4.4 (4 x CDs) - £8.00 If this goes well, I'd like to add a page to the web site whereby people can purchase these CDs from the web at a much lower rate than Linux Emporium to help encourage use of Linux. Whatever my profits are on this (which will be very small) will be pumped into running the server running ALUG. If people think this is a wacky and pointless idea, then I shall return to my small corner and hide :) However, if anybody is interested in this scheme, then please let me know what CD(s) you'd like and if you'd like to pay by Paypal/NoChex or personal cheque. What might be worth considering is findin something that will 'background' download files and allow restarts from whatever you've already downloaded. I kinda thought the point of nessusd was that it ran as root so the others are possible. Do you think this is just a symptom of scanning the loopback address? Here we go again.... Anyone had problems with Netscape 6.2 not saving stuff like bookmarks, the default view you want (i.e. without "My sidebar" etc), or even forgetting mail/news accounts? I can set them up, and then darn it when I close Netscape and fire it up again, it doesn't save them! The permissions of ~/.mozilla imply that the owner (me) should have read/write permissions (and execute on some), so I don't really get it... Still running Mandrake 8.0 as Debian's still being a pig to get X up and running on... Awww... you guys is great!!!! lol ;-) Well, I'm off to repair it using (my favourite text editor- maybe I'll need to put "no HTML e-mails" on my sig SO bulky in a txt editor). Luckily, however, I was able to retrieve the message by the help of Micro$oft... lmao I actually added the pop3 acct to my hotmail acct (linuxmail is blocked by the ISP due to spam) and retrieved it from there- seems Evolution (spit spit) didn't actually d/l the message, just fragged it's own mailbox... I've also got 1.2 MB of spurious Qmail weirdness sent to that mailbox too. you take these risks running beta software, but then someone's gotta do it, right? lol (well, it *does* put up a disclaimer when you run it) again, saved by the LUG... Yes, they have somewhat missed the point of Free Software, but in all, it is an encouraging report. BELIEVE me. I've been trying to persuade these guys from the inside that licensing costs are going up and do not provide better software, that we need to think of different solutions, etc. To have a report, that although conservative is mostly favourable (and you're can't convince *me* that Linux is a suitable desktop solution YET-but let's not get into that one again) -it's a great advantage to us. Certainly my take on the report is not to criticise it (lest we bore them with nitpicking over licensing etc), but to say "what it fails to mention is this;" and also selling it... let's not get too idealistic (I mean it's only a socialist <cough splutter> govt after all ;) ), but rather talk in their terms which is: 1) Money, and 2) Money (Oh, and if it works, it's a bonus) lol The TCO would plummet amazingly; licensing costs are huge, support will stay the same. It's just not true that *nix people get more money than MCSE's etc (I'm currently 'surveying the job market' and typically people are asking for NT, M$ 2K AND UNIX/Linux experience for an equivalent wage to mine). Hardware, these days, is possibly the cheapest part of the TCO, so overall the TCO WILL go down. Also, I can site an example where a major proprietary application caused one hell of a problem when the software company went belly up and didn't release source code... I tried the online portscanner at www.grc.com but somehow I don't trust it, as it's targeted at Windows. It did show up my SMTP port as open, and I use my ISP's SMTP server, so I'll have to look at that..... Hi Barry - I usually hesitate in replying as I tend to get it mostly wrong, but just in case it helps: I have a win98 computer using a linux box as a gateway, and not only did I have to set the gateway etc settings, but in the properties for my browser ( Internet Explorer) I selected connections, "never dial a connection", then in LAN settings put the linux box Ip in the proxy server using port 80 (also selected "bypass proxy for local addresses"). ipchains replacement

Hi Folks, I am a newbie home based Linux user with dial-up access to the internet. Up until now, because of the small, infrequent, amount of time I am actually connected to the internet, I have simply been ensuring that I always log on as a normal user (rather than root) to protect my PC, however I have recently been wondering whether it would be wise to install some kind of protection for my PC. Looking in my little Linux text book it would appear that "ipchains" would probably be sufficient for my needs (rather than setting up a dedicated firewall), however, when I try to use ipchains I get the error message: ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel. The kernel I am using is 2.4.10 and I am wondering if this error message is hinting that ipchains has now been superseded. Is there a modern replacement for ipchains? If so then what is it and where could I find some info on setting it up to protect my PC? Thanks, Ian.

Gateway problems

I have a machine running Debian 2.2 which can be connected to the internet via a modem. This is part of a small network. One of the other machines on the network can use the above machine as a gateway and connect successfully to web sites using a browser when running Linux. If the same (secondary) machine is running Windows 95 it cannot connect to any web sites via the Linux gateway machine although the gateway address is set correctly in the network configuration on the secondary machine. Can anyone please offer any pointers? Barry Samuels

Debian: Configuring Gnome

Hello! I have installed Gnome from the official release CDROMs but I cannot get the standard desktop with The "foot" icon, bottom bar, panels etc. I get a custom "debian" background, and menus that appear when I right-click the desktop. There is a workspace icon in the top right-hand corner. Also I cannot change the window manager via Gnome control center, or find a way of adding items to the menus. I do not know whether the problem is in the window manager or the Gnome configuration. Does anyone know how I can install a clean "standard" version of Gnome? Regards Chris Lale

Sounds like you don't actually have gnome running, but only a window manager. Don't know much about debian's layout, but if its anything like slackware then you might need to change the link in /etc/X11/xinit/xinit which is prolly just pointing to a window manager config file. Relink it to gnome, start X, use gnome to load the window manager in gnome config. All, I am looking for a portable device which I can use for uni which has the following features 1) SSh client 2) Qwerty keyboard 3) PCMCIA slot for 802.11b card I have looked at either a cheap or second hand laptop running bsd or a compaq Ipaq or possibley somthing combled togther from PC104 boards. What would people suggest? It just needs to be reasonably cheap and have the ability to ssh into my shell account. Thanks D

Thanks for the help on setting up the home mail. I had a reply to Ricardo on setting up a DNS server (to do it the hard way) along the lines of nettle whips and sack-cloth, but I've been getting in a slight muddle with elm, and swapping alug addresses, so it got lost along the way somewhere. Jen.

knews and utf-8

Hi, I'm having problems getting knews to display utf-8-encoded posts properly. It will do utf-7 and latin-3 with no problem, but does anyone know the magic incantations for utf-8? Failing that, I guess I'll build libslang-utf8 and slrn-utf8 or whatever they're called. Or maybe I'll get fed up enough to upgrade to testing. -- MJR

Hello list. I've got fetchmail and exim working now on my linuxbox, but am having problems getting the two windows machines on my home network set up correctly. I want to tell the windows machine Ducati that Rebecca uses to get its mail from my box Bascule. Bascule knows that Rebecca is 'Rebecca(a)Ducati.jenbass'. Outlook Express on Ducati, however, is asking for mail servers information when I try and set it up, and will only accept a POP3-style input, rather than 'Bascule.jenbass'. Is there a more simple method of configuring a windows machine to collect and send mail on a home network? Thanks, Jenny.
