Saving /var/log/dmesg

Hi Folks Having fun and games here trying to track down a bug that is causing my kernel to crash and do a cold boot. Much of the information I need is in the /var/log/dmesg (oops reports, etc), but this is overwritten on the next boot - Question: Is there any way of saving an old dmesg log at the next boot ? I've tried adding a "mv -f /var/log/dmesg /var/log/old-dmesg" to the end of rc.sysinit, but it copies the current dmesg log. Regards, Paul.

Samba 2.2.3a-6 not showing files

I have a local guest account called winguest. winguest has a password via linux passwd and smbpasswd. I wish to share a directory called /home/ricardo/mp3 , and all the files and directories below it. At first, the directories and files were owned by ricardo, group ricardo and chmod'd 700. So... I created a group called winguest, added my normal linux user to it, and also the winguest account. I: chgrp -R winguest mp3/ chmod -R 770 mp3/ I can "see" the shares using gnomba on the local machine, but they are empty (i.e. reports as 0 files). The appropriate lines in my smb.conf are: [mp3] comment = mp3 files writable = yes path = /home/ricardo/mp3/ public = yes I suspect I have done something silly with file permissions, because in the /var/log/samba/log.pixiedust file (pixiedust being the samba server) I have: [2002/11/14 17:13:35, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(589) pixiedust (192.168.0.2) Can't change directory to /home/ricardo/mp3 (Permission denied) Using gnomba on my laptop, I get a different problem. When trying to access these files I get the following error: mounted on:>/tmp/PIXIEDUST_mp3< Gnome-Message: gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds: returning -1 There is no mention of the laptop being denied access in log.pixiedust. Any ideas?

Despite successful restrarts with lilo/linux s/dselect/install, the process seems to fail when it gets to the request to acces the web to get the ibm.jdk files. I respond "no+return" but get the same loop. I have d/l the tgz files and burned to CD but can't get install process to look at cd-rom and since system doesn't seem to look at cd-rom, can't copy tgz file to /tmp! Have I invented perpetual emotion? Or as Chef Fourwalls says, "If we 'ad some eggs, we could have eggs and bacon, if we had some bacon." Hi Guys, I wondered if u would mind helping me out. Basically have a Smoothwall firewall, which works great but I have to reduce the number of PC's I have, being kicked out of my office for my new son. Been looking at routers in the price range of £100 > £150 but they don't seem to provide the flexibility of Smoothwall, for example the Solwise SAR 715 does not really provide true DMZ functionality. A router with a firewall, ids, port forwarding, dmz and nat functionality would be great, thus wondered what u guys use with your ADSL?? By the way, ditched BTO today after three days of no service, again. Migrating to Nildram :) Take care and thank you, Jami

I have exactly the same problem with Mandrake 8.2 downlaod edition which I am running but only when the mouse is plugged in as USB - if I plug the same mouse in the PS2 port it doesn't happen. I have no idea why and desite paying money to join the spectacularly useless Mandrake Club thing for extra support nobody has come up with an answer yet. Dave

I have a serious problem with X (I think!) - Help!!!

I'm running Debian Testing and I did an update yesterday. I think one, or more, of the packages was X related. I really can't remember any more than that. One of the new packages was updated source code for my kernel which is 2.4.19. I compiled and installed that. When I rebooted and started KDE, my normal desktop, the whole machine froze after a short time. Absolutely nothing worked. I have the magic sysrq key option in the kernel activated but even that did nothing. Only a hard reset would work. I tried booting using my previous kernel with the same results so I've ruled out the new kernel. I have since tried Icewm,as it's less complicated than KDE, and it appears to work after a fashion. I am writing this with my normal email application running under Icewm. There is a 'but' of course. If I try to switch consoles using <ctrl><alt><Fn> the machine locks up immediately as before. If I try to exit Icewm the machine locks up even if I exit using <ctrl><alt><backspace>. I am assuming that this is an X problem. I have no idea where, or how, to start looking and some advice is sorely needed and would be very welcome. Sharp Zaurus for less than 300 quid

Hi all, I just ordered myself a Sharp Zaurus from http://www.expansys.com/ less than 300 quid including delivery, the best price before this was about 350 quid online and you also get 50 quids worth of free accessories atm... although this may be perhaps a stock clearance, or maybe a new model is just around the corner. I have used Expansys before and they seem quite good. Hi, I finally took the plunge and went for GPRS, and thought I'd share my linux configuration experiences in case anyone else has to go through the same pain as I did! * Why would you want to do this? - Faster connection whilst on the road (up to 5x the speed of a dialup connection over a GSM mobile connection) - The geek factor * Why wouldn't you want to do this? - On most networks a GPRS connection is more expensive per mb than a dialup connection (call charges work out less than per mb charges!) - Super high latency link: don't expect to be IRCing from it, but fine for email downloading etc. * What do you need? - A computer running linux (Debian in this example) - A mobile phone with GPRS support - A mobile phone service provider, with GPRS enabled on your account I'm on O2, using a Sony Ericsson T68i over infrared to my Debian laptop. These details should be more or less the same regardless of distribution, network or phone: the only things you need to check are the "APN" (access point name, eg "mobile.o2.co.uk"), username and password, and dial string. * How? Configuring a successful computer-phone connection is beyond the scope of this. Get that working first! The SSL update, which hadn't been announced, but was expected, was also queried - possibly by the same person --- am I being a little vague here? Anyway, I thought I'd just post to say that both are out now (well, the SSL one came out last night, I just forgot to post) and I've successfully downloaded and installed both. Still stuck after Sunday ��

Dear Egg Spurts - after numerous reboots, I can't get Deb3 to break out of screen lockup after some sort of resume. At LILO/Right shift the only option in "Linux". When selected, same boot routine results in two mins of screen scrool, with no option to stop, which seems to start from where we left off but followed by same stop/black screen. nvidia graphics card

Hi list, Has anyone any experience in using an nVidia GeForce 2MX graphics card with Debian? I did an apt-get install nvidia-glx-src but although startx apparently gets xserver up and running there is no visual on F7. (Sorry - a bit lacking in helpful info there, there is a bundle of stuff on screen comes up on the console from which I typed startx but I don't now how to trap it in a file.) How was the meeting? Most sorry not to make it. Jenny.

I've been running xf86config and it has been generating a completely incompatible file with such sections as "drivers", and X hasn't liked it at all so I've been writing one out manually with section headings it can deal with. A keen newbie on the loose

Hey there I've been subscribed to and reading messages on the Alug mailing list now for around 2 and a half months and thought it was about time I said something. I'm just about a complete newbie to Linux, my experience extends to a failed Red Hat 6.1 graphical installation - it failed because a) I didn't know my hardware well enough and b) because I didn't have a clue what I was doing and didn't know how to configure the thing once it was (semi) installed. I never actually got as far as starting X. I waited for it to start automatically when I booted after I finished the installation (I tried both Gnome and KDE on separate and numerous occasions!) but it didn't so I typed startx and it... flopped. I'm installing on a PII 300mhz box with a 4Gb hdd, 64 meg of RAM with what I thought was a pretty generic graphics card and little else. I've been using Windows for years but have wanted to get into Linux for a long time for a number of reasons - one of them is that I'd like to set up a web server I can use for development with PHP and mySQL or another database application. I'd like your advice on which distro to start with. When I couldn't install redhat I did a bit of reading and found that Mandrake or SuSe might be a good place to start, but a friend is sending me the latest version of Red Hat and Debian (which he thinks I would learn a lot from) on CD - I only have a 56k internet connection. I have a limited experience of unix commands but apart from that I really don't have a lot of knowledge on this kind of thing and feel a bit like I don't know where to start. Do you think I would benefit by coming to one of the ALUG meetings or joining an IRC session? I live near Peterborough but could probably make a UEA meeting, but travel is a problem caus I'm 16. Linux to be installed in due course I like change and have never left my computer the same configuration for very long. I hope to find Linux a challenge and to be able to experiment and enjoy as I will soon have more time available. To this end I shall go in at the deep end and start with Debian but there appears to be plenty of help available for the novice. John

KDE3 Ksplash and Konquerer/lynx

Hi I have a RH 7.2 machine which I have just updated with KDE3.0 KDE3 is very nice, but I cannot use konquerer for web browsing, as although KPPP connects OK, any URLs typed in are timed out. The KPPP log shows low rates of traffic, inshort pulses (typically between 0.1 and 0.2 Kb/s) with more data flowing out than coming in. Trying to connect using lynx is exactly the same. Does anyone else have any experience of this and what might be causing the problem? Another anoyance is that at starting KDE the splash screen Ksplash always crashes. This is not fatal, just a bit of a pain and spoils my nice new desktop. Is there anyway that this can be tackled? best wishes Glen

Hi Guys, Well as some of you know already from Mondays meeting on IRC my wife went into labour, which at that point we were relaxed which I remained in IRC, then all hell broke loose. We rushed to hospital where after six hours hours of trying to birth our child we were advised to have another section as last time :( But all ends well, mother and baby Dylan are well and it is apparent why Dylan didn't come out naturally, he was 9.75lb, ouch. Some advice needed

I am using a backup application which I wrote myself in Free Pascal which uses Afio to do the dirty work in conjunction with my SCSI tape drive. Very occasionally a problem occurs during a backup (read or write error) which causes error messages to be appended to the logs, kern.log, messages. sys.log, at such a rate that it consumes about 500MB in a couple of hours. Can anyone suggest a method of monitoring the logs for excessive growth or for the occurrence of the same error message occurring say 25 times which would then automatically kill Afio (which stops the messages). I can't monitor this from inside my own application once control is passed to Afio for the Backup or Verify. Many thanks Barry Samuels

Gentoo 1.4 install

As we are talking about Gentoo, anyone tried the Live 1.4 cd? Tried to install last night, but found the install instructions did not always relate to the installation and some of the noted commands failed to execute i.e. not found. This may be due to the fact I tried it on a Tosh Tecra 8000, so I gave up a installed Debian woody which worked but took an age and generated many errors and no I did not write them down, got to late to care :) Will probably try Gentoo 1.2 when a chance. Not entirely sure which tarballs to use as what does it mean when stage 2 installs some of the system? Probably trying to do to much to late, tired eyes and all that :) Take Care, Jamie

I had the same problems with Gentoo 1.4, the install process was totally different compared to the install instructions, and it lacked pcmcia modules, and was therefore useless for my laptop. I tried Gentoo 1.2, and assuming you have broadband, you can have it up and running in one whole day (and night). Speedtouch Modem

I have a rather odd problem using the Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem with the sourceforge USB speedtouch drivers http://sourceforge.net/projects/speedtouch/ Running SuSE 8.0 with the latest (and all previous versions of the drivers) I have a stable connection, until I try and listen to a shoutcast stream using xmms. In this instance the connection will usually drop within 3 hours and always within 5. Downloading large files (say an ISO) from a fast mirror presents no problems. After the connection fails there are no errors reported in any of the syslogs. I am unable to restart the connection until I reboot the machine (even after killing all relevant processes and unmounting USB etc) I have posted a message on the Speedtouch mailing list, but had no response. Has anyone experienced this, or got any ideas as to what may be the cause. The machine also dual boots XP, under XP I have no such problem so I know my DSL line/Service is ok. Any help you be greatly appreciated Wayne

Problems with CD-Writing

I can't seem to write a CD without getting errors on it (i.e. a diff with the orginal show differences). What seems to be happening is that I'm getting buffer underrun on the drive as it stops writing momentarily. I can't see why as I have cdrecord's fifo set to 16Mb and it doesn't drop below 90%, the writer is on it's own channel and even if I did get under-run the drive is supposed to have BURN-Proof which according to cd-record is switched on. I've tried slowing down the writing from 20x to 8x and still got a bad write (although I didn't notice the drive stop writing but I didn't watch for the whole 10 mins). I've also tried turning DMA on and off by using hdparm on the /dev/hd* entires (which seems to work even though I'm using ide-scsi) and turning it off means I can't spool data quick enough for 20x anyway. I was hoping someone would have a suggestion as to what I could do to stop this happening (appart from buy scsi!). I'm currently compiling the kernel with less crud and the preemptive patch to see if that improves the situation. However, I can't seem to kill any of the processes or unmount the nfs mount. I've restarted nfs-server and portmap. I can't umount /mntpoint , it says : Cannot MOUNTPROG RPC: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Unable to receive umount: /ducati: device is busy It would be a shame to reboot the box as it has sat there running reliably and happily since last May. browser spoofing

It looks as if IE.. can be set to spoof by modifying the registry under W$. A lot of the other browsers can be set to spoof by modifying their .cfg or .ini type files - either through the browser or editing the file itself. Opera doesnt as yet appear to have that facility so perhaps if anyone knows of an open source proxy it might be worth seing if that can be modified to spoof. *big* gentoo problem

Hi all, was using gentoo last night and did a emerge clean which should not remove any packages critical for operation of the machine and had it remove portage..... This has resulted in one very poorly box, does anyone have any idea how i could fix this? Is rpm included by default on the system? I can't check anything now as I am at work but I just wanted to read the docs to make sure I hadn't done anything stupid and now feel vindicated that I was not at fault. Anyhow if rpm is included in the base system would somebody mind building me an rpm of portage-2.0.38 please? If it isn't has anybody else got any good ideas? Thanks Adam

After I wrote a cd (or some of a cd) I looked at the cd under the light and I couldn't see the difference between it and a new, blank one. I'm sure you can usually see the track! I did discover that I had more luck when using Kreatecd rather than xcdroast but I don't understand why as they both use cdrecord under the hood. An interesting thing that I've discoverd about my drive is that it appears to stop writing and change speed at about 25% and 50%. Seems to be OK doing that though, guesss the burn proof is working OK. My view on this topic is that a new subscriber should be pointed towards the FAQ, a link to a guide on netiquette, and perhaps one of those Newbie guides (i.e. don't expect an answer if you give no info). In regards to off-topicness, people seem to self-regulate and move things to social when things go too far off topic. Sometimes, someone sends a mail nudging them in that direction (let's take this to social guy/gals). I have only been on the list for a year or so, and self-regulation in general seems to have worked fine. And for headers, the FAQ sums it up. For newbies especially, their LUG is essential for them to start using Linux (how many times has a newbie said "I can't get my modem working????"), so perhaps their only recourse is to use work e-mail. Or perhaps they can't afford a landline/net connection. ALUG is the friendliest LUG I have seen so far since it (as a sort of egregoric entity) doesn't alienate people. Let's keep it that way! SGI Indigo

Hi all, I have the opportunity to acquire an SGI Indigo (not an Indigo II) today for free with unknown specs (possibly an R4000 cpu) a quick search on google reveals that it will not run either Linux or NetBSD but will run Irix 6.5, can anybody think of any other uses for it? all reasonable suggestions welcome but will need them quick as it will most likely be dumped at some point tonight if I don't take it.... Well, by some strange chance I managed to get an assignment on Linux for my MSc course. ;) However, it is proving difficult to find reputable sources (i.e well known companies, academics). I've been explicitly told that "Bob's Linux page" won't be considered a reliable source of information! Does anyone know of any locations of good, critical whitepapers on Linux (such as the architecture of it, security, performance). There's plenty of good quality papers from people like M$ giving a very anti-linux view, but a desparate lack of reputable (for some reason they consider M$ reputable, but I can't change that!)sources for Linux. The problem is the software is considered as much a part of the package as the hardware. You don't buy a computer from Dell without a processor, so why should you be "competent" to install a processor or indeed an operating system. I also seem to remember M$ threatening OEMs a few months ago about shipping a PC without an OS, they called it an illegal machine and wanted all OEMs to report it too them immediately, with this kind of thing is it any wander OEMs wont refund anything on the OS. Unfortunately this is the way it is. I recommend buying a machine with Windows 98 rather than 2k/XP that way you can either give the license to a local school (although this too is deemed illegal by MS as they have decided that an OEM licence is bound to hardware, go one prove it! :o) ) or similar. As Requested in the joining mail here is a short piece about me. Interest in Linux started way back in 1997/98 when I worked for a small ISP. Worked there part time, then when I finished college went back full time, general basic Linux admin (apache, qmail, user management, support etc). Moved to a small software house in Norwich, lost my linuxy roots, although, during this time built and used Linux Firewalls (2.2 and 2.4 varitents) and web servers. 2002 moved to Pitman Training in Norwich, in the process of migrating a Novell network to Linux, also in process of maintaining Linux Firewalls (hardcore and Mandrake firewall edition) as well as setting up a DNS server for a local company in the near furture. As well as all of this in the process of getting Linux certification instated to Pitman, including RHE, Linux+ and LCA quailifications. Still under the impression that Linux isnt quite ready for the desktop, although it is nearly there. Fav Distro: Slackware. Returning unused copies of Windows

My girlfriend has just bougt an Acer laptop through Dabs and is planning to run Debian on it, and is fairly peeved that she has had to pay for a useless copy of Windows XP. I remember hearing a while ago about Linux users returning unused (i.e. never booted) copies of Windows (I think this was around the 95/98 time) that they had been forced to buy with computers, usually laptops. Does anyone know if this is still possible under the Windows XP EULA? -- Andrew

Hi, I need to compile a driver so that I can get the network to run on my laptop. Being a newbie when it comes to compiling (except for kernels), could somebody please explain what kernel headers are? The instructions say unpack the tarball and run make (you need kernel headers for this, with /usr/src/linux pointing to them). I understand the first bit but not the rest!! OK. Silly but annoying problem. In gentoo, all I get is sh-2.05a$ as my prompt in Eterm. Before I run X, I do get the familiar ricardo@hostname directory$ I want it back, since I'm a forgetful soul, and it would save me all that typing of pwd. But adding the suitable PS1 variable to .bash_profile doesn't help. Also, the ls alias that gives me different colours for directories, executables etc doesn't work in a terminal (not just eterm). But not apparently if you are a private customer. To see my point go to dell.co.uk, configure and buy a Inspiron 8200 Laptop. XP Home and XP Pro are the only OS options FreeDOS no longer seems to be an option. Neither is the "No Operating system installed" that they offered a few years ago. In addition to this I have to select either Works, Office XP SBE or Office XP Pro. Again no option for none of the above. Gentoo (whizz!)

I've just installed Gentoo on my laptop (thanks to broadband!) and I have to say that I am really impressed. At the moment it is a skeleton system, with Gnome2 and that's about it, but I noted down some times for applications to run (i.e. Mozilla, which always takes ages to run, and Nautilus). In a way, it's an unfair test, since Gentoo uses far more up to date progs than the other distro (Redhat 7.3 in this case), so bear that in mind... (also, gnome may not have many of the components that slowed it down from logging in at gdm to the desktop being available yet). However; gnome is DEFINITELY running much faster. It used to take 10 seconds from gdm to a desktop, it now takes 6. (approx). Again, the diff is so massive, I guess there's some gnome components I'm missing. I'll post the details of the Mozilla test once it's installed. The downside; it takes ages, even with a 600kbps connection (generally 40-60kbps download speeds) and a 1ghz celeron processor and 256MB RAM. But then you'd expect that, compiling X and gnome2 from source! Erm, other than that, there really isn't a downside! I've only been using Linux for a year, so I feel like a not-quite-newbie, and there have been moments where it has stretched my knowledge (even at this point!). compiling a ridiculously patched 2.4.19 kernel, for example, produced some surprises. However the docs on the gentoo website are AMAZING. The best I've read so far. I'm still a little unsure that may USE variables are set correctly, but I guess I can always make world if I have to. I intend to do a wee review on the Wiki, comparing times for various apps, and also I know that I've yet to install any of the apps that are *really* tricky. I'm also a total emerge newbie, so comparing it with apt would be unfair at this point. Anyhoo, I'll post the link to the Wiki when it is done (but that may be a couple of weeks). I'll post the mozilla findings later today, when I should hopefully have it installed. Weeeeeeeeeeee! http://www.kdevelop.org/ has what I believe is a very nice IDE that may be able to do Java -its not yet available for v3 but I heard it was running in v2. A warning about Forte - I've run it on a 800MHz/256Meg Ram W2K and it took over 3 minutes to load. Worked quite well when it was up but probably no a tool for beginners unless they're patient. Weeeee! Zoooom! Pump was at fault. to connect Linux to NTL Broadband you need the following: DHClient or DHClient3 (pref the latter), NOT pump. CONFIG_PACKET=Y and CONFIG_FILTER=y in your kernel. I put this in the Tips,Tricks and Workarounds in the Wiki. That's it. It's simple enough, once you've been told. It was the kernel level stuff that stumped me! ;) Ricardo (Weeeeeeeeee!
