I read a comparative review of a few distributions the other day and Mandrake came out a long way ahead for the novice user. Do any ALUG members use it? If so, is it really that good? On another distributionish note, I'm starting to make Debian packages of some stuff I find useful. It's not that hard and I know there are quite a few debianised ALUG members, so maybe we should think about doing a alug-deb archive somewhere? On boot I get the message 'Starting httpd: httpd: Cannot determine local host name. Use the ServerName directive to set it manually' then I get a [ FAILED ] message in a nice pretty red colour. Everything seems ok though but it's annoying me so... Anyone know how I can fix it? Working for company where I have to support W95, W98 and NT4 I would much rather every one had NT4. Yes it does not support the range of hardware, but then it also allows to me to say we will use this harwdware configuration and any thing else and your on your own. As an aside though I run NT on an IBM Thinkpad 770X and getting SuSE 6.2 running was a damn site easier than NT4. Lost parallel ports? and DOJ judgement

I upgraded to RH 6.1 after the last ALUG meeting (pretty impressed so far) and my lp ports have disappeared. I have twp parallel ports lp0 and lp1 RH's print tool fails to find them. Dos however has no problems with either lpt1 or lpt2. I have tried spp, epp and ecp ports in the BIOS to no avail. RH 6.0 had an option to set up your printer during the install routine which is no more in 6.1. This shouldn't be a problem for me because RH supply a nice graphical tool for the purpose (printtool) but as I said before printtool can't find my ports. Any ideas folks, is there something I should have done on install (yes I know I could/should have used the RH cd as a coaster and installed Debian but IMHO Debian's installer is not for the faint hearted). Any help appreciated. Changing the subject what impact do you think the DOJ judgement against MS will have on the Open Source community? These reports have been coming out for months now, but I am very worried that I haven't seen many 'good' reports of Win2k becoming reliable. The DoJ is reportedly pondering whether to make Windows open source. Quite what they call open source is open to debate, but if it means something like the GPL the title "The World Is Not Enough" springs to mind. Why? Because if programmers get their mits on the source code, it will branch off into hundreds of versions, none of which will work properly (I can do C, but I bet I could break the Linux source code by altering it - and Windows is far more complex) and the MS-official version will spread like wildfire. How many organisations/countries are deploying Linux because Windows is too expensive? Open Source Windows and all hell will break loose. Quite whether anyone would deploy any Windows version not officially MS-sanctioned is another matter... There should be a file called 'lp.o' in /lib/modules/<kernel-version>/misc. Try typing 'modprobe lp' as root, and with a bit of luck the kernel will load the module for you. If there is an lp.o, and the kernel refuses to load it, the there must be some parameters you're not giving it, although my kernel seems to be loading the module of it's own accord when required. If the kernel will load it but it still won't print, then triple check that pc style hardware is enabled. ISA Modem

Hello All I've decided it's about time to use Linux to connect to the net rather than Windoze, but as always there's a problem. Instead of a nice pukka proper modem I've got a PCI winmodem which I understand won't work with Linux. I can't afford a new branded modem at the moment (I thought about a US Robotics 56k external) but I know where I pick up an internal ISA one very cheaply. Has I understand it I should be able to use this with 'generic' settings. Hi all, Look what I got less than an hour ago - the Premier edition of the UK's first Linux Magazine: Linux Answers. It's predictably a little thin, but since there aren't a huge number of ads in it, we'll let that pass. What's rather good about this is that is appears to be breaking a mould in the publishing industry - it *appears* to be fairly well technically proficient, even on the second page giving the reason why they say "Linux" not "GNU/Linux" throughout the mag. Loads of tutorials (mmm :), RH6.0 and Corel WordPerfect 8 on the cover, plus RealPlayer G2 and WINE bundled too. Priced 4.99, from Future Publishing. I'll be giving a fuller review on LNC soon. I see on Slashdot that Creative Labs have finally had the wisdom to slap a GPL on their crappy Sblive! drivers announcing that they "would like to take this opportunity to ask the Linux community to help make the opensource driver better". Nice to see that pressure from the Linux community campaigning for this has finally paid off. Maybe kernel integration is now a realistic expectation in the not too distant future, one can only hope. I'm reading through the responses now. OK, I think comment number 71 is enough... Er, yeah, so, not one mention of praise for the article, in fact a lot of calls for staff resignations in the ed dept., no-one can believe his claim to be a "network administrator", and errily enough, a large number of responses from people who run Linux themselves. This leads me onto an interesting question: just how many Windows admins and suchlike actually have Linux installed at home? Seems to be quite a few, judging from the responses on this NT-orientated site. I'd hazard an unqualified guess that the recent estimates of Linux installations totalling between seven and twelve million is now grossely out of date. If I were to stick my neck out and give a figure, I'd say 15 million might even be conservative. SSH in User Directory

Hi guys, I'm having trouble installing SSH into my university Home Directory (~). I've got the ssh-1.27 sources, and configured with ./configure --prefix=~/downloads/ssh --with-etcdir=~/downloads/ssh/etc It builds fine, but errors on make install. Dial-in and X

Ok folks, quick question. I succeeded in making a linux box a dial-in system, and it authenticates and all that a treat. However, I want to telnet in over the dialled-in connection, and can't, and I want to use X (X-Win32) and can't. I'm sure I'm forgetting something simple, but can't think what. [Newbie question - what video card to buy?

I am hoping to get to grips with Linux by using an Evesham Pentium Pro 200 PC. I have pinched the Video card to drive a second monitor on my W98 PC so have to buy a new card. Mainly for business applications but I might play the occasional game. Any suggestions for a Linux supported card please? Also any suggestions for a basic sound card and 10BaseT network card. scp/ssh help needed

OK this sucks big time... Here I am (right now), using scp to upload a small (1KB) index.php file to a webserver in the States run by VA (see below). I watch the initial upload, then all goes quiet indefinetly. I've tried many times without success. I've had it suggested that the server may be doing a reverse dns lookup on my, yet nslookup <myip> works fine. Any ideas, only watching a 1KB upload for more than five/ten minutes gets boring... LAN Party at Melton Grange (yes, it's ALUG-related)

This may not appear to be ALUG-related, but it is... We've got a major LAN party planned for 21/22 Jan 2000, which is a Friday and Saturday. The main games will be Half-Life (inc TFC) and Quake3, servers for which run on Linux. We're expecting over a hundred people, and expect to need a minimum of 8 servers, possibly 9 or 10. There may be an NT box required for Tiberian Sun and so forth (no Linux servers). Stupid Company Policy of the week

Well, I'm going to let off some steam. I'm on Demon, using the CWC 50p offer. I'm getting Star Office weighing in at around 70Mb. There's not much competition in the office world so I guess this is going to have to do. So I start downloading from the Amsterdam mirror. It stalls more than it comes down. I abort and try the US East Coast; this one's fast without stalling. Whoops. Netscape crashes at 15%, 3hrs 30mins to go. I go back to the website and try grabbing it again. Oh no! The webserver to manage download accounts is down. In dispair, I find sun.co.uk, a lovely fast mirror. But oh no - the Star Office download goes back to the US. Why? I try once again, and his time I'm not getting any response at all. In fact, a 503 Server Not Responding comes up. I hit reload a few times and am finally presented with a response: Your Session Has Expired. I have now written to Sun blasting them for not keeping sun.co.uk in the UK. It's diabolically stupid to maintain a mirror when critical parts are left in one country susceptable to crashes and downtime. Triple booting

Any ideas on how to or where to look for info on triple booting Linux, Win NT and Win 98? Win NT and 98 reside on a FAT16 partition on hda1. Linux has / on hdb1 with /home on hdc1 and a swap partition on hdc5. Lilo is on the first sector of the Linux boot partition hdb1 so I'm booting it with a floppy at the moment. I presume that the NT boot loader can be configured to point to the Linux boot partition but I'm not really conversant with NT so I need some help here. I don't really want to use a third party boot manager or a floppy so it's either the NT boot loader or possibly loadlin but again that's a root I'd like to steer clear of. FreeAgent1.1/Wine 990815/Linux RH6.0 - invisible mouse pointer.

Problem: Mouse pointer is white, as is FAgent's background. Both seem to be non-configurable. Have tried various command line parametes with wine, no effect. Using a drossy Matrix G100 video card. Suffering same problem with other MS software, eg Notepad. Is there a simple solution? KDE-1.1.2 out

For those interested, KDE-1.1.2 is now out. I've seen the Press Release, but www.kde.org isn't yet updated, and ftp.mirror.ac.uk hasn't got a 1.1.2 directory yet. Expect rpms in the coming days. I believe this is the final release in the v1.x.x tree, and as such is suppost to be very stable. Window manager

At last Sundays meeting one of you I think it was Brett was running a window manager which had transparent windows. What wm is it, where can I get it, how do I configure it to do that and do any other wms have this facility? Also I tried to load Debian to no avail (major hassles trying to get the x server working), I think I still need some hand holding as yet so it's back to RH6 which works a treat on my system. Any chance of recovering a partition?

Greeting from Japan (Hi all!) I migrated into Debian 2.1 Slink (with a tiny bit of Japanese environment), and it is cool to have it on my computer. That said, I also mistakenly configured lilo, my Windows 9x partition won't work -:) I know that there is a configuration problem in boot.0301. I don't have "boot.0301" in boot. I know myself that in order to boot Windows 98 on my first partition, I need a right "boot.0301" file, so that I can recover from that. Is there anyway I can recover boot.0301 without backup? I can't access to /dev/hda1, as the earliest part of the partition is messed Don't worry if I got to lose "that" partition. Though I'm gonna lose lots of pictures files and job hunting documents, I know I won't use Windows anyway. Strange X problem.

Lads, I don't know if this is a coincidence of not, but since I brought my PC home after alug3, if I connect to it from any other PC using X the machine hangs totally. The only cure is the reset button. Telnet works just fine, and X works fine on the machine itself. Does anyone have any idea what this might be or how to get around it? I recompiled to kernel cleanly and from scratch (we did that a few times on Sunday!), and that didn't help at all. Cheers, Laurie. Hi all, Well, having fought with Debian 2.1 for some hours, I had to give up. The reason: with no mouse I could'n't get into X, and with no modem I couldn't hit the net to get help; I set both up myself and in the case of the modem, I tried manual configuration and Debian's pppconfig/pon progs, but neither had much effect (setserial reported the tty to be fine). So, last night I formatted again, and reinstalled RH6 - I am now rebuilding what I had, this time using RPMs and not source tarballs. However, I have had one slight hitch in my mail system. I backed /var/spool/mail up onto a Windows partition, reinstalled, got sendmail up and unfortunately collected mail before installing the backed-up mail. Hence this email. I just took a look at /var/spool/mail/jg to see if concatentation of files was possible, but there's a system-generated initial email with an 'X-IMAP' header and number which appears to have some significance. I'm no Unix mail expert, so what should I do? I only use sendmail with pine using standard unix mail configuration, so what do I do? Here's the email:

Question about .htaccess

I've got a question on .htaccess on a web server. My friend has one of those ftp only web space accounts, so I can't get telnet access to it. I want to create a .htaccess file to password protect one of the directories, with corresponding .htpasswd file so I can prompt visitors to enter a username and password, and then it allows them to view the web pages in that directory. In the documents I have read on the web it indicates I need to issue an htpasswd command (with appropiate arguments) to create the .htpasswd file. This isn't possible as I have no telnet access to issue the command. Is it possible to fudge the .htpasswd file, either by hand or on my own linux box and then upload the resulting file? I currently have the .htaccess file set up to certain domains (e.g. anything ending with .dial.pipex.com), but this solution is not ideal. What we really want is a single user/password to access a restricted area. Furthermore I thought I would be able to write a perl script with a user/password setup for this type of application, but then I realised that once past the perl script password checker, you can get straight to the desired files :( Please email me your replies or see me at the meeting on Sunday to discuss this further if needed. That debian MD5 question

Hi, can't remember if this was answered ;) I think Bill asked about MD5ing files in a package. If you do dpkg -s <packagename> you get a list of config files with their original MD5s. Do you really want to MD5 the binaries too or is that good enough? Also, when you upgrade a package, it detects if you've changed the configfiles and asks you what action to take. Wasn't Sun Microsystems working with the InstallShield people to produce a Java verison of InstallShield? Probably something in the realm of JavaOS I would guess!! Talking about .deb packages, has anyone had any millage with 'alien' which converts between different package formats? I've never had need to use it, but it may prove useful to those worried about availability of .debs etc. Andi p.s. This wearable is well worth seeing. I think I saw it and had a go of it (might have been a different one) when I was doing a course at Essex University. One of the best parts of the course was a discussion towards the end about Linux on Palmpilots. I had one of the TRG superpilot memory boards and downloaded ucLinux onto it. Didn't do anything (no shell or GUI) but it did boot the kernel. Excellent stuff. Hey all, As some of you will have seen in ucol, I am currently building a site called LinuxNewbie.com (LNC) which will be hosted by VA Linux Systems. The site features (will:) a lot of information, including reviews, previews, tutorials, editorials, etc., plus a database of various things a newbie might want to know. But we have a problem. The project team as it stands numbers five including myself. Over the past few days, we have been making enquires regarding new staff members, and if all the applicants are accepted (looking good, Andrew :) we will hit eight, plus one more possible. I would like to hit fifteen by launch date. The current potential staff are offering articles on popular stuff like mail readers, networking, setting up X, etc., and indeed we still are looking for more like this. Part of the permanent staffers duties will include maintaining a daily news section which is like slashdot, only more Linux-centered which particular focus on newbies. We also want to see contributing authors submit their work, not neccessarily permanent staff. So we have some vacancies which need filling. We want you (or people you know) who have experience in the following areas: Site-Specific: - html - GIMP or other O-S graphics packages deemed suitable for the job at hand (e.g. POV-Ray) - PHP3 - MySQL - testing pages once ready (while on-line and during our pre-publication period of peer-review) Content: - authors with opinions, knowledge, ideas on Linux and O-S. - Section-maintainers (e.g. "Which Distrbution", "Community", etc.) - News from around the web plus our own and visitor-sumbitted stories - /if you think of it and we don't have it, come and do it/ There is going to be some serious amount of work over the next two or three weeks, and the site will be better with a large team churning out high-quality content. StarOffice printing?

Does anybody know how to get my printer a Canon BJC 4100 to print from StarOffice 5.1? It prints just fine from the default print queue under Gnome, gEdit etc. do I have to get a specific driver for StarOffice? Printer set-up in SO only seems to support PostScript printers but has a default printer option which I thought might point to the default print queue lp...whatever. How do I get this damn thing to work, it's frustrating because I've been using the Windows version of StarOffice for a while and prefer it to the MS bloatware suite and it would be very useful to actually do something productive under Linux for a change. Hey there, I've been following the list since its inception, in the background. I think its time I got involved, see if I can help at all. There's a couple of us at the Electroacoustic Music studios at UEA trying to run Linux boxes for synthesis and composition (nightmare). I run RedHat 6.0, and am about to try to install debian m68k on a mac powerbook 165c (THE nightmare). Willing to help organize meetings at UEA or elsewhere, although I have 0 strings to pull. Path and Gnome launching

Couple of small problems. Firstly could someone tell me how to add a location to my path every time that I boot. I need to know which configuration file buried somewhere in /etc I presume and what I need to add to it. Like adding a statement to the autoexec.bat file in dos (sorry I know it's a taboo word). I think file holding the path variable is /etc/profile but I'm unsure how to add to it. The file has the line PATH="$PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin" is this my path or an addition to it? In dos each location in the path is separated by semicolons i.e. path=c:\;c:\dos;c:\windows;c:\windows\system ... etc. How do I do this in Linux? Secondly I want to create a launcher icon on the panel in Gnome to launch StarOffice, this launches from a script which can be achieved in a terminal window by ./<nameofscript>. What do I need for the properties of the launcher, like how do I specify a path for the script? I tried just entering the path of the script in but it doesn't work although double clicking the script in Gnome File Manager works a treat. GTK Mozilla

Hi all, I'm trying to make mozilla (nightly build) see libpixmap.so for the gtk+ themes engines. On startup, however, it just says that the file isn't found. I've tried symlinks from the cwd and /usr/lib, /usr/local/lib to the file/directory, to no avail. I've even run an strace on it but it doesn't mention getting that particular file. All other gtk apps work fine with the themes. Any ideas? James. Themes for E?

I've downloaded some themes for E and have some obscure errors appear when I try to use them. I get messages like: ****************** Warning: unable to determine what to do with the following text in the middle of current Text Definition: (or WindowMatch) _FILL RULE _SCALE (this is sometimes blank) will ignore and continue... ****************** There are 3 choices ignore, exit, and restart window manager. Selecting ignore brings up similar errors and the theme tries to start but only partially loads? I'm stumped anybody know what is causing this? * List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk At ALUG2 I was moaning about my difficulties with the Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live beta drivers in RH6. I'm really please to say that I have managed to get the damn thing to work. In the beta driver rename sblive.o-2.2.5 to sblive.o-2.2.5-15(or currently installed kernel version RH6 comes with 2.2.5-15) it's read only so you need to change the permissions (don't forget to change them back). In the install_sblive script change the line that reads `V2=2.2.5' to 'V2=2.2.5-15' (or what ever kernel version you are using). Run the amended install_sblive script with ./install_sblive. Modify the /etc/conf.modules file so it reads alias sound sblive pre-install sblive insmod soundcore post-remove sblive rmmod soundcore install sblive insmod -f sblive some of this will already be present from the install script. The line 'install sblive insmod -f sblive' forces the module to load even though its not the correct kernel version.
