I Have always used 3Com Cards with Linux, In every box I have used one it has worked just fine straight away, it seams 3Com cards give me the least hassle of any that I have tried. I think most of the "next generation" of network file systems will do the sort of thing you describe, with various other performance caveats (eg it needs a sizeable cache). I'd suggest you start by looking at CODA, but when I last tried this around a year ago it wasn't yet usable. Any reason for not giving the machines IP addresses? It makes it a lot easier than using the ethernet cards raw. -- MJR

Final question for today :) I am planning to purchase a 3com ethernet card for my Linux box (Athlon 650 - PCI card required). I know some of you have bought 3com cards in the past and was wondering what the best option was for Linux support. I have tended to use NE2000 compatible cards in the past, but recently heard that they put more load on the CPU than they are supposed to. So I thought a change to 3com would be best. Read the hardware HOWTO and www.alsa-project.org to find out if your sound card is well-supported. Depending on whether you're using the standard kernel drivers or ALSA, the setup will vary a bit. Unless something changed, the ALSA package in debian is a little out of date. Debian's own installation howto isn't bad, but remember there are lots of people around UEA to lend a hand if you hit problems. Back everything up first, though. -- MJR

While it makes it clear Smoothwall is not a VA project, it does no such thing about SUK-LUG.
