Hi,
I'm intending to put together a DVD compilation of the following distributions in ISO format for people that want to play with various distros but without having to download or buy individual ISOs themselves. Would anybody be interested in this at all? Might be useful for those going to meetings and have a DVD/CD-RW combo drive in their machine :)
I'm intending to include the latest ISO releases of:
- Debian Stable (i.e. Woody) - Mandrake 9.1 - Red Hat 9.0 - Knoppix - Slackware
Regards,
Martyn

Gentoo? 1.4_RC4 is the latest.

Just a thought but putting testing cdimages on may be more helpful for some people to save on the downloads (Thats what most modem users ask me for anyhow)
Another thing you may want to consider is sticking GnuWin II on it ( http://gnuwin.epfl.ch/en/index.html ) I know it's windows software so not strictly a distro but it may be helpful, although I guess just sticking debian on a dvd fills most of it up :)

I would have thought that, more or less by definition, testing changes more than stable, and would therefore involve more downloads?

Yup. My DVD of Debian is 86% full, and that doesn't include non-free.

I would prefer SUSE 8.2 to RH9.

Live evaluation CD aside I'm not sure about the licencing restrictions for copying SUSE CDs. You would need to confirm that it does not contravene the Suse licence.
Cheers, BJ
It would also be prudent to evaluate the Red Hat guidelines at http://www.redhat.com/about/corporate/trademark/guidelines/index.html
Regards, Paul.

Yes good point Linux Emporium have stoped shipping the download edition because of trade mark issues with the red hat name and ship something called pink tie which has the offending trade marks removed.
Cheers, BJ
Found the passage I was looing for in http://www.redhat.com/about/corporate/trademark/guidelines/page9.html
<quote> If you are an educational institution, a not-for-profit organization, a user group, or an individual affiliated with or employed by any of those organizations, Red Hat grants you a trademark license with respect to the RED HAT mark for use with the non-commercial redistribution of Red Hat® Linux® <snip> We consider non-commercial redistribution to be any distribution for which you charge no more than the cost of replicating the CD and a reasonable handling fee. </quote>
So it would appear that as long as this is kept within ALUG, there should be no problem distributing RH as part of a compilation CD..
Regards, Paul.

This had occured to me also and I am still unclear after visiting the Suse web site. There is certainly an ftp download version which appears to be GPL but it is not clear what this includes. Also, I have seen someone selling Suse professional 8.2 CD sets for about £10 on eBay (UK) which is not to say it is legal, only that someone is doing it.

Someone interested in Suse might want to follow this up:

SuSE Linux and Linux User Groups Support for UK user groups
SuSE Linux Ltd has a policy of supporting and helping Linux user groups (LUGs) in the UK to the best of its ability.
LUG organisers should use lugs@suse.co.uk as their point of contact with us. Liaison with LUGs is handled by Roger Whittaker.

Also a little further down the page it says: -- Quote --
We are in regular touch with the following LUGs: Anglian Linux Users' Group http://www.anglian.lug

whatever that is supposed to mean in practice :-)

And also on the page http://www.suse.de/uk/private/support/lugs/
--quote -- Free subscriptions to SuSE Linux for LUGs
We also offer free subscriptions to SuSE Linux to bona-fide LUGs - again contact lugs@suse.co.uk for more information on this. -- end quote --

Indeed. I thought most of our SuSE users were now using Mandrake, which is rather easier to distribute. Is anyone from the group still in regular contact with SuSE?

Martyn was the old contact, I did consider picking it up again but decided that I don't want to be involved in or be seen to be advocating the distribution of non-free software.

I'm still in contact of sorts - so far reporting naughty people for selling SuSE Professional CD-Rs on Ebay :)

How does it feel to be a capitalist running-dog? ;-)
BTW, one of our former leading SuSE users has reminded me they now use Gentoo. Sorry for forgetting that.

Let me have words with Roger at SuSE to find out what's the best way that LUGs such as ourselves can make use of SuSE's distributions. Sending large boxes full of manuals and discs through the post or carrying them to meetings isn't terribly efficient.
Certainly I've not heard anything from SuSE after the release of 7.1.

Straight from the horses mouth (or A Roger Whittaker from SuSE)
If we're talking about SuSE Personal or Professional, you are free to copy and share the CDs, provided that you don't charge for them - this is covered by the yast licence: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/8.2/COPYRIGHT.yast
This does not apply to the SuSE Linux Office Desktop because it includes licenced proprietary software - specifically Crossover Office and Acronis, which are licenced by their owners on a single user basis.
Our "subscription service" for LUGs has rather faded away as the number of LUGs has risen. We used to send all LUGs on our list a full boxed copy, but we can't afford this any more. What can do though is to send just the disk set to as many LUGs as possible - if you send me a postal address I'll send an 8.2 disk set today
I have asked him to send me the 8.2 media, who should be the trustee for the media within ALUG ? one of the librarians perhaps ?
I must say I was very impressed with the response speed to my query (less than 8 hours). Well done SuSE

I did this as well - we might end up having two original disk sets for people to have access to :)
