I would most definitely argree on that one... ...I've seen too many bodges and work arounds in my time. Let the db engine deal with the replication and leave the app to do their stuff. Ther is a question of wether the replication should be asynchronous or synchronous with db updates... the former means the apps will continue without waiting for the replication but would mean the two databases are out of sync for a period of time. I've seen situation were (near) real-time data is being pushed into a db only with the replicated copy ages behind. Just pray you don't query a db with old data in!!! Some of the db replication doesn't work to well anyhow AFAIK... ...I know we had to implement some in-house code to replicate some tables manually. Unfortunately, I wasn't on that bit of the project, but I guess it must be possible. Ashley, what database engine would you be running? I'm guessing it'll be something Opensource, but we did have a project here a couple of years back that replicated three Oracle databases between three different sites round the World.... AFAIK it worked okay, but the bandwidth becomes an issue if there's a lot of traffic and a high frequency of updates. Andi "Ashley T. weekly IRC reminder

Hi all, Could someone please now take over responsibility for the weekly IRC reminder as today was the last day that I could say for certain it would get sent. I did toy with the idea of leaving it running but didn't want to upset mjr when it went wrong :) and it may of died without warning when somebody finally noticed a cron job running from someone who left several months ago and had r00t on all of the boxen. Anyway the reason that I can no longer do the weekly reminder mail is that I resigned from my position with Zeus on Friday afternoon, and will not be returning to them in the future as was originally planned. Also if anyone knows of any short term contracts going in the East Anglia region (especially Norfolk) starting some time in August doing Unix/Linux type things then please drop me a line. I was originally planning to leave for an extended holiday in Australia about now but think I would rather be in a better financial position first. Of course I am now looking at a very relaxing July while I decide my next move though. Hopefully this means I will get to (finally) finish the FAQ now I am a man of leisure! Hi all, I've got apache root set as /home/jenny/cwp and in there have an index.html file and a stylesheet.css file and a jpeg file. The index.html file has a link to the css file for formatting, and also contains the jpeg. When I view the file through my samba share, it opens up using the correct formatting and with the jpeg displayed. I've created a shortcut on the windows desktop, target "C: \WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE http://trx850/" This opens up the index page in cwp ok, but index.html hasn't been formatted as per the stylesheet and the jpeg image isn't showing. I've done a chmod but no luck. Should there be an application for css files in mime types? jpeg is in there. Thanks, jenny-ergates.

I have installed Red hat 7.1, when I made the install I had, (and still have a two button mouse), which the install regarded as emulating a three button mouse. If I buy a three button mouse and plug it in will the system recognise as a three button mouse or have I got to do something arcane to get it to work? My two button mouse make s three commands, (left=L right =R L&R =M), L-1 LL-2 R-3 How many does a three button make? It appears to me that it should makethe following: L-1 LL-2 M-3 R-4 (this much would appear to follow the two button, but does the following apply?) L+M-5 R+M-6 R+L-7 L+M+R-8 and probably other combinations which you can work out for yourself. There used to be in the 1970's, in the magazines which came with the Observer and the Sunday Times, adverts for electric speedwriters which, by using five buttons, one for each digit , used in combinations which it was stated were easy to learn, enabled one to type at hitherto unobtainable speeds. couldthe same principal be applied to the commands that could be made with a three button Mouse?

list, For the afor mentioned BBQ idea to go ahead we need some participation from members, we need people to offer to do the cooking and also people to volunteer food and maybe disposable BBQ's. Both jobs are very simple and wont entail much effort, I think cooking can be a sort of collective thing but we will need someone to start off the food etc... Then we need the food, now if with some coordination a few people each bring small individual items we could get a nice collection toegether and share food as well as source[pun intended]. All, I have just spoken to pearson Education who are offering a discount on there books to ALUG members, we just have to put a link on the web page to there site which if we use gives us the discount. Pearson are offering Prentice hall books which are the publishers of books by Andrew Tanenbaum. Andrews books are some of the best technical ones out there, his book on OS's helped Linus no end when he was writting linux originally. Also his book "Computer Networks" 3rd edition is very good and recommended reading for all members. Whilst on the subject of books, I was thinking of taking Jens page on Lniux books and building it into a larger page with details of the ALUG discounts and also the recommended reading list. If you're happy to play with mulinux, that's fine too, but be aware that a fuller set-up is possible. Really, those two are about as alike as chalk and cheese, but either would be an easier system to play with instead of trying to shoe-horn things onto floppies. Aha... it's more likely to be that the version of the scripting language it was using wasn't compiled to use extended memory on DOS. I often (well, last time I was working on a project where others used *that* OS) sent out perl scripts with a perl4 interpreter, as it all fits on a floppy and is fine for doing certain tasks. You have to make sure that you watch the memory usage, though. Good programming required. -- MJR

Act of God permitting I will do an overview/demo at the next meet. This will be the format (assuming no-one else wants to get involved and up things a little) 1)TCP/IP as an inherently insecure protocol. 2)DOS : Why RFC compliant TCP/IP implementations leave your machine open to Denial Of Service. This will be the standard DOS, hopefully with a demo. Though I will nedd to run an older implementation of Linux to show this so unless I can get it right (or eeeeeeeek! use a windoze box) then it will have to be theory only. 3)Buffer Overflows : a)If its binary you can send it and get the remote machine to execute it. Demo1-Local : A simple bufer overflow program which yields a shell. Demo2-Remote : wu_ftp : A classic buffer overflow yielding a root shell. 4)Once compromised its easy to get back in : Standard things that are done to make sure you can get back in (Backdoors) Someone or other may wish to have 2 penneth, esp. if you have any info on current backdoors, other B.O.s (I'm currently looking at Adore) I would be glad to share the load. I will not be touching on firewalling/NIDS either, I'm sure there are other ALUGites who could do this better. Curious

Well, I was getting some nasty errors on my CDROM recently while trying to play a CD that I knew worked before. XMMS just hung there, while xconsole showed errors about "SeekComplete DriveReady Error". So I rebuilt my kernel with only the drivers I actually use (removing the swsusp patch that makes my machine panic if I try to use it) and that didn't work. I installed ALSA (which debian have now got quite a nice build process for now, I think, although I hacked it about a little bit). The sound quality is absolutely loads better, but it still hung on the "bad" files. I searched around the net a bit, confident that my system was fairly neat and tidy now. Someone mentioned that they see that error when the CD is scratched. I took the CD out, polished it with the "Magic Cloth" I use on my glasses (3 pounds or so from Boots Opticians) and now it works. Ooops. -- MJR

Having had problems with setting up Balsa, I used another user name to set up the KDE mail client, and whilst it will send and receive, It shows me the Error Message Unknown Host mail.btinternet.com. As it is sending and receiving through btinternet why is it an unknown host? John Seago

The basic idea is to make the window management system as modular as is practical, so you can choose the right mix of features for you, minimise your memory usage and maximise the speed. Don't like alt-tab? Don't have it! Want different root menus? Fine, just replace the goodies concerned! All this without having a bloated window manager that supports all possibilities. That's the bit which will take some packaging together, preferably with a "control panel" or something that lets you switch features off and on. Anyway, until then, I'll send the patch to whoever wants it. I guess I'll say something on-list when it's packaged. -- MJR

Hello Everyone. My name is Norman Rule as you see. I am 70 years old, and use a Dan computer which had an i486 DX-33, since enhanced to 133Mh with an Evergreen upgrade. I have two hard disks with a total of about 650 Mb, but as yet no functional CDROM drive. I use MSDOS 6.2, enhanced with 4DOS, and I have Windows for Workgroups, which I only use for programs that demand it. I would like to try Linux as an alternative to examine its possibilities, and from reading believe my system will suffice. However, I decided to start off by trying the Italian small offering called Mulinux. I have been able to start this system either from my hard drive, or from a Boot+Root+Usr 1.772 Mb floppy. My problem is that there are several add-ons that one should be able to introduce with such titles as X11, GCC, VNC, TEX, etc. I have had continuous failure to add these, and since I only have 3 hours a month on the Net from AOL I feel that I cannot spend too much time trying to download different material in a blind attempt to solve my problems. There seem to be no useful documents to help ones first efforts. If anyone has the experience of Mulinux and the time to help me I would be very grateful. By the way, I dabble in Assembly Language and have one or two questions on that if there is anyone out there who would have time to help me. I do have a 40X CDROM drive but so far have not been able to get that to function either. I get the message that an appropriate driver cannot be found. A while ago we where discussing X and .Xdefaults and I discovered that some people might want some of my settings for X If you type use KDE it can be anoying the way you X applications look and feel is modified by apply changes to all X windows deleting some of your changes to the ~/.Xdefaults file. List, I feel the need for some new hardware. I was thinking for some time of getting a new graphics card, the Geforce 2 MX powered ASUS cards look nice. But I also decided I would get a DVD drive. This leaves me with some questions. 1) Is it worth getting TV out on a graphics card? for a desktop machine? 2) How well is the geforce 2 MX supported on Linux? 3) Are DVD rom drives fixed as a single region? if so how do I unfix it? 4) Do DVD rom drives have a S/PDIF output on the drive? 5) Can any one recommend a cheap sound card which will give me 6 channel sound output from the DVD drive and allow me to output it to my surround amp? 6) What dvd decoding software would people recommend? I think I've found the easiest answer, that is to use the dialogue box when updating, at least it looks to me much less scary than tackling the command line stuff. having managed to get balsa to take incoming Emails as well as sending, (I've got KDE to work for Emails), I then tried to get Pan to work, but both it and Balsa seem to have terrible 'Authentication' problems lots of error messages and then crashing. This is probably something I've done, but as I have no idea what I'm doing I can't tell. Pan won't work, according to the log, as I can't log on to BTinternet news, KDE Email is also reporting 'bad log' with BT, I re-typed all my passwords so I don't think its that so it must be something I've done when I installed and attempted to configure it. Coping with this, (Linux), is getting to be more of a full time job than a simple change to a reliable system, still it fills the days, and the nights, and all the time when I should be doing something else, perhaps I should get some Debian Disks, then the learning process involved in getting it installed and configured might enable me to work it when I've got it in! Your output file(s) will contain calls to functions (obtained via prototypes) which need to be resolved in order to make a whole executable. The Linker will resolve by either a) matching the calls to a function defined in another output file or b) through a library that it is aware of. Therefore you need either a .c file which defines the function to compile (to make an output file) and link together with your main.c's output file. Or your linker needs to know where to find the library which contains the pre-compiled function. Add the directory containing the library to your linker options. If you have a .c file add it to your project as a new node (if using an IDE) or make sure it is in your source directory (if using a makefile which processes all files within the project tree) If still stuck, or this makes absolutely no sense then email me over the stuff you have, and/or your linker error messages and I'll have a look. Okay dokey - my brain has switched off for the weekend, and this problemette is beginning to drive me nuts. I want to close a range of ports including 3128 (which is Squid) to the outside world. I would have thought that to do so would involve issuing the command:- ipchains -A input -j REJECT -p tcp -s 0.0.0.0/0 -d 0.0.0.0/0 3128 but it don't work. The machine itself is NATted through a Cisco 1600 series routed (the router itself is on a 192.168.1.x address). Does anybody have any suggestions on how to go about doing so? The current ipchains table has been reproduced below as a guide. Delaying tactics

Hi, Thanks to Adam I now have a working network between my Linux machine and my Acorn Risc PC but in trying to mount the Risc PC discs I have created a problem. I have put some lines in the /etc/fstab file to mount -smbfs the 4 drives on the PC but I see errors when I boot the Linux box, presumably because at that point SMB is not running. What can I do to overcome the errors? Hi, After a few days head scratching I thought I'd ask this one. Basically what I want to do is this: I have 2 files one containing urls called url with each url on a new line and another containing words called keywords with each keyword on a new line I want to search the url file for each of the keywords in the keyword file and output any matches to the file output I can do this for individual keywords using awk '/word1/||/word2/||/word3/' url > output But I need a way to do it for a load of keywords. What I find very interesting is that it printed: Just another Prl ehacker The problem is that 'quoted printable' thing again; an '=' got converted to '=3D'. Upon removing the 3D, it prints: Just another Perl hacker How's that for a resilient language! (my guess is it turned up in a regex and the regex just didn't match, but I can't be bothered to read that code). Incidentally, my $.02 on the write-only language bit; this is how I'd write the above, and I think many people would agree this bit o' Perl is a clear, well structured and elegant solution to the problem: perl -e 'print "Just another Perl hacker\n"' Show me a language clearer than that... Help with Mulinux, please

Hello, I first want to thank those members of alug who are already trying to help me with my problems with Mulinux. I was interested to find that markj@cloa has had the same kind of problem that I am having. However, I think that the cause is something that I do not understand and am doing wrong. I do not think that the cause is the fact that the distribution is not being updated as he suggests. Going to the Mulinux homesite and looking at /mulinux/mu/current one finds that there have been eight versions of the kernel this year, 2001, from mulinux-11r6 last modified 18 Jan 2001 to mulinux-12r0 on 14 Jun 2001. Similarly, of the eleven addons,the five earliest were last modified on 23 Dec 2000, and the three latest on 14 Jun 2001. I suspect that some of those writing about Linux, especially if English is not their native language, for DOS users do not appreciate the "ignorance" of the latter on things Linux. Some writers to the Mulinux homesite have asked how one can make a 1.722 Mb floppy. The answer, as I remember, was not satisfactory. Best wishes, Norman Rule

There was apparently an agreement reached on IRC tonight as to a place and time within the exhibition where alug members would meet to compare freebies etc. M J Ray asked if someone would post the details to the alug-announce mailing list, but I think by then anyone who had been party to the discussion has left IRC.
