Why I am interested in Linux

Thank you for being extremely quick Martyn. Why am I interested in Linux. I am increasingly fed up with reliability problems with MS OS's. Only this very night I had a problem that partly resulted from problems with ntlworld that prevented retrieval of emails and logging on. Whilst the email retrieval was in progress I was disconnected and my PC world still be trying to accomplish this. I Think that I only just managed to 'restart' on the 'shut down' dialogue box before every thing 'freezing up'. Enough said about that man and his whimsies known as widows. It is something new. It really does seem like the pioneering spirit of the late 70's & early 80's. Not as spectacular as California in those times but quite subtle. An international movement made up of poeple outside mainstream OS supplies which most poeple would say there is only one. It is a Historical fact that most important inventions have come from those who are outside the mainstream industrial and commercial institutions i.e. the first PC, the first Apple computers, prototypes in a garage. It also might be the rebel in me that is suspicious of globalisation and wants a way of striking out at a monolithic global coporation and that man with his gawky looking hair and glasses. Enough said I interested in installing Linux on a an older system for word processing and basic things like that. Indeed I have seen in Micro Mart dealers stocking old P200 boxes not much above the 100 mark. I believe installation to be not as difficult as it may seem but not as easy as MS. Also a better chance of drivers being available enough said. And lets all get that man. May penguins rule the world! Bye for now from Edmund Chinnery

Mailman Upgrade on the 14th (tomorrow)

Hi, Just a quick note to let everybody know that Mailman (the list server software that powers ALUG) will be upgraded tomorrow morning. This will result in some downtime while I perform a backup, upgrade the existing installation, and perform a few tests of the upgraded Mailman. This should not result in a downtime longer than 10 minutes. Upgrade is due to take place around 10am and finish around 10:10. I would be grateful if nobody could post anything to the list, or use the web interface during this time. Hello could any possible help me with a networking issue. iv been useing windows for some years now untill the othere mouth when a friend of mine introduced me to linux mandrake 8.0 . which im finding to be a much better OS than windows... so as im very very very new with useing linux i was woundering weather anyone could help me on where to install my drivers for my PCI netwotk card i have a C scource on the instulations disk but thats all its got under the linux folder on the floppy so could anyone possible tell me where to put this C code in order to get the NIC working... nick

Looking for a low-cost Linux based single board computer

Hi everyone, I am trying to get hold of a low-cost (<£100) single board computer that will run embedded Linux. This will be a project for a major blue-chip company, and will be an excellent leap forward if we can use Linux instead of a cheap windows pc-based solution. If anybody knows of a company selling this sort of thing, preferably in the UK, I'd be glad to hear from them. I have looked at linuxdevices.com, and embeddedlinux.com, both of which are strong on documentation, but weak on where I can actually buy boards from...

Promoting Linux

Yesterday, on my way to Ipswich I stopped at SBS Computers in Wittnesham to buy new IDE Cables. Talking to the proprietor, we touched briefly on the subject of Linux, in which he expressed an interest. I offered to return and talk him through an install of Mandrake 8.1, as he was interested in putting a 'free' OS into the second hand computers he sells. I returned today, (having to return some faulty goods to a shop in Ipswich), unfortunately, a problem occurred with installing Mandrake 8.1 in the next batch of Computers being prepared for sale, which I lacked both the experience and knowledge to overcome. Is there anyone on the list in the Ipswich area who could give some help and advice to SBS Computers. This would go a long way towards fulfilling one of ALUG's aims, that of promoting linux, as his customers would be going away with a computer pre-loaded with linux. Ain't Linux Wonderful

A couple of days ago I had a major freeze on my Mandrake 8.0 desktop. I was running an mpeg encoder, called appropriately lame, at the time, when the screen just froze. No keyboard response so i was forced to reset. Only problem was e2fsck did not like one partition and kept freezing itself. So I ran the MD8.0 install disk in rescue mode and found I could manualy mount all the partitions and their contents seemed intact. Running e2fsck with the partitions unmounted found the corrupted partition and fixed it. A reboot and there was my system all intact and functional. Ain't linux wonderful? Ian -- Ian Thompson-Bell

I had a slight false start, owing to some missing symlinks, but I soon fixed those, thanks to this list, and then it was ALMOST trivial - just type in the right commands in the right order and make plenty of tea between each command. Also, I discovered a mag called Linux Format (thanks to John Seago) and that has a cover CD bearing the source code for kernel 2.4.9, which is what I used for my new kernel last week. So I didn't even have to download 28Mb of source code before I started! I'd read somewhere that I should expect the compilation to take hours or days on an old PC (my P166 is ex-skip) but I was done in less than an hour, once I'd sorted my way through the 'make menuconfig' stage. So if I can, I'd say anyone can. If you want me to share my lack of knowledge any further, feel free to ask! I found the Kernel HOW-TO quite helpful and there's a README in with the source (which, had I read it more diligently, would have probably saved me falling into the lack-of-symlinks hole...). Ta to all for help with the alarming pages_failed messages. I now understand that 1. I shouldn't set a large cronjob to run every minute by mistake ;-) 2. Kernel 2.2.18 is not so hot on memory management and i need to do my first new kernel installation 3. I need to set sysrq in some boot script or other to avoid crashing out like i had to yesterday. Now I can spend the next month trying to find out *how* to do these things...whoohooo! Sorry if I caused any confusion cross-posting on two lists. Some interesting merge talks coming out of it though. Jenny.

After last night, and making a kernel with the IPSec patches in by just typing the right (one) command, I've decided that make-kpkg is lovely. Incidentally, when I've used SysRq I've found it needed enabling with an echo 1 >/proc/sys/kernel/sysrq on boot. Do it. It's invaluable when your machine goes tits up. Free to a good home

The following hardware will shortly go in our skip unless anybody would like it... 1 x Sun 3/80 workstation with 19" mono monitor. Unknown amount of memory/hard disk - although was running as my DNS server until a year ago. 1 x Sun 3/50 workstation with 21" mono monitor. This box is *ancient* - it is 68000 based and incredibly solidly built. Unknown amount of memory hard disk (if any). Has not been plugged in for several years. Assorted tapes, cables, mice and other junk to go with the above. All free to anybody that can be bothered to come to Eastbridge (near Leiston in Suffolk) to collect it...

Debian, Slackware, hardware, BIOS and what am I doing wrong?

I have at last managed, with help, for which many thanks, to get my BIOS set up properly so that I could install Mandrake 8.1. However I am still unable to get Debian or Slackware in. I was told this afternoon that I may get some more suggestions if I post to this list again, so here is a reiteration of my position and the problem. I have two hard disks, one 10 gig as the primary master (with `Windows' on), the second 40 gig disk, (with partitions for Linux, and Mandrake 8.1 installed on /dev/hdc5 is the secondary master. The CD drive is set as the primary slave. I can get Debian to install as far as the base system, but on rebooting into it it can not access the CD drive. Slackware does not install as when one gets to the point where the system is installed it reports all sorts of stuff not installed from an earlier part of the installation. Am I trying to do something which is impossible, should I only be installing one set of linux, am I trying to do it in the wrong order? I could get rid of windows from the first disk, but I would prefer to keep it for the better quality printing it provides, (although I could be persuaded that the other benefits of Linux outweigh it). Suggestions and advice would be welcomed. John seago

This lovely message was waiting to greet me on all consoles of my debian box when i came in to work this morning, and I can't telnet in. RedHat7.2 memory shortage?

Hi everyone, I'm just starting migration, and was impressed enough with what I'd seen of an old copy of RedHat 6.0 to install RedHat 7.2 on my machine. Its a P133 with 64MB, and 4.0GB hard drive. While I'm impressed with all the eversocool features of this (desktop) install, it has slowed the system to a crawl. Everything seems to take ages to load and respond, and trying to do anything more than just move the mouse about or type in Kword seems to involve a huge amount of thrashing of the hard disc (the swap space being utilised?). I've noticed that balsa as and email client and Galeon as a web browser seem faster than Mozilla - is there a suite of 'lighter' programs that I should choose? Any recommendations? Glen

Hi, Take a look at Amavis (http://www.amavis.org) - integrates with Sendmail, Exim, Postfix, and Qmail. I don't know of anything that will scan files downloaded from the web. Me, I think fixing client problems by hacking the server stinks. You'll still only get people running stuff not got through the means covered and they'll be complacent. Linux virus problems are still rare (you only installed GPG-signed packages of software from recognised sources, right?) and most other problems can be taken care of by keeping your system patched up to date. -- MJR

Instaling linux alongside windows

I have wanted to try out linux for a while however i have been having problems in creating the second partition needed. I only have a 1.5GB hard drive on my 486 (8 years old and still going!!), and windows for some reason of its own has installed a nice big block of data right near the end of the drive. the defrag program that comes with windows 95, refuses to move this data. This means that fips will not allow me to create a large enough partition to install a linux distro. (note i have tried restarting and defraging as well as trying it in safe mode, to no effect.) Does anyone know of a free program that will either allow me to defrag the hard drive properly, or create the partitions nessesary without destroying data (e.g. a free version of something similar to partition magic). Thanks in advance for any help you can give :o)

What's the agenda? the http://www.anglian.lug.org.uk/ site always times out on me. Although I got MDK 8.0 up and running, I'd like to install Deb 2.2r3 (I have the disks). Unfortunately, I tried to install 2 times already- both failed for different reasons. It would be great if someone could lend a hand there. I have a 4 port hub I can bring- I really can't get away with taking the other hubs (all 40 ports worth) away from work as they're mucho £££££- specially as they're being installed on the monday. I should be able to bring a crossover cable and some other cat 5 cables, but it would be helpful if people brought their own too. I've done it on both my laptop and desktop computers and they run fine now (with proper USB support! yea!). I won't include a summary as i recommend you read all the instructions listed there. A small word of warning though, the apt source is unofficial so therefore it is unsupported, but the maintainer is a registered Debian developer so it's all pretty well maintained. Locked Directories-MDK8.0- answer!!!!

ALL credit must go to Syd on this one. You're an absoloute star- there's a pint with your name on it!!!!!!! In a terminal:- su (give password) supermount -i disable umount /mnt/cdrom umount /mnt/floppy mount -a supermount -i enable (optional: it may change your FS type to "auto", so try iso9660 for CD, vfat for floppy) mount -a This did it for me. And of course:- cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak ...Just incase it balls up again! :) I suspect that supermount has problems with windows partitions- poss remove from fstab and mount manually if you want to use them? How do you set up a directory so that files being copied into it from a windows machine using a samba share will copy as read only? At the moment they are rwx- - - - - - so I have to chmod manually when a doc is copied in. I've tried to set the whole directory as 755 using the -R option, which works for stuff already there but stuff copied in afterwards is still unreadable. nb - the files are moved in by various mortal users. I've just been speaking to the Millennium Centre and they've turned round and told me that there is an issue, they don't have the room for us anymore!!! But I have a cunning plan, we can use the Cinema at my parent place in Cheveley (5 mins down the road), all organised if everyone is ok with that... Taking the Plunge - recompiling the kernel

Please help!!! Having been persuaded (against my better judgment, no doubt) to have a go at this 'Recompiling the Kernel' game, I finally plucked up enough courage this afternoon. I installed all the source code for kernel 2.4.9, installed all the gcc and things for my Slackware 8.0 system and went for it. Ran make menuconfig first of all and patiently waded through the billions of choices there. Managed to save it and a message came up which said, 'make dep next'. I checked with my Kernel HOW-TO V2.5 and that's what it seemed to be saying, too. So I did. VERY soon after typing 'make dep', I got this: /usr/include/bits/local_lim.h:36: linux/limits.h: No such file or directory make: *** [scripts/mkdep] Error1 Well - I don't have a clue what to do now. I read through the Kernel HOW-TO 'Pitfalls' section and (of course) no mention of this particular one. What's missing? Where is it?? <groan> I knew THIS would happen.... Debian, Slackware, hardware, BIOS and perplexity

As Gerald wrote in his recent post to this list, he installed Slackware, using disks borrowed from me; so I know that the disks work. I however, despite trying since Gerald sent them back, get can neither Debian 2.2 r3, or Slackware 8 to install, the problem comes when, with Slackware I reach the point where the install starts, either the CD is not being read, or it is not writing to the hard disk; and with Debian having installed the base system, when I try to install the rest of the system, again my machine will try in vain to find the CD/CD drive. I did try the Slackware experimental kernel for those having difficulty with hardware recognition, this succeeded in wiping my entire linux disk, together with my Mandrake system and its diary/calendar and address books; (why is it that the loss of one's address books causes so much distress?). Having had problems with installing Mandrake 8 my hardware was re-arranged to make the CD drive the primary slave. I thought at first that this is what had caused the problem. On sunday Chris and I tried again to install Debian and Slackware on his PC, my PC and his laptop. Slackware had the same failure on all three, Debian had the same failure on both PC's but went into his laptop. We then tried altering the hardware configuration and the BIOS (just about every permutation we could work out, over several hours), again no success. I am only left with the experimental altering of the BIOS to mirror the settings of Chris's Laptop, to try to get Debian into my PC. However that doesn't seem to get me very far with Slackware, any suggestions will be very welcome. John

Masqueraidng your browser (and other things)

There has been some discussion on the list at various times about systems, particularly bank systems, that *insist* that you run MS IE. I have installed a proxy that might solve your problems. It does three things: 1. It filters out banner ads, at present only doublclick.net, but let me know any other domains you would like fitlered. 2. It anonymises your request by removing the Referrer and User headers. It does not remove Cookie headers because these will probably be needed, but I can set up another one that also removes cookies if there is a demand. 3. It forces in a User-Agent header that lies and says that it is MS IE 5.0. This will solve problems at the server end, but not those in Javascript at the client end. Nor will it help if the bank software is trying to use Active X or other MS proprietary stuff on the client. You can find this proxy at proxy.webwright-uk.com port 8000. You are welcome to use it, but I give no guarantees as to fitness for any particular purpose (etc etc etc). BTW it does not cache. Please let me know what works, what does not work. Zeus 4 upgrade

If anyone has doubts about the dnetc client- don't! Mine's been crunching away while I do all my sys admin, and I have noticed NO change in performance- except on virus checks, but then that doesn't happen on my Linux box! Oh, and of course your CPU is always maxed out in GKrellM! :) I *am* cheating slightly, as I have a few NT4 servers and workstations doing the work as well as my linux boxes. Thank god supermount can't f**k up my modem. (pleaseohpleaseohplease don't tell me that it can!) Specifically, it's trying to prove that no code is uncrackable. (Well, RC5-64) They already cracked the code that was used to encrypt credit card transactions in the US (obviously it has now been upgraded). There is also the OGR thing, what makes my head spin, but I'm sure gives some Maths professors wet dreams. There are better causes, such as Intel's cancer research one, (really nice screensaver) and the alzheimer's disease one, but for some obscure reason they've only released Win32 clients. I just found it originally on the Slack 3.5 disk when I was starting out and feeling very lost.As a very-dyed-in-the-wool DOS Xtree Gold man, I started to feel more at home when I happened upon MC. I've just sort-of stuck with it - kindred spirits, I suppose! Of course, XTree's long in the tooth and abandoned now, too, and so am I (well, not abandoned...) so it all fits together. I did discover something called Unixtree, which was supposed to be Linux's closest resemblance to Xtree Gold, but I never got it to run. Gerald.

I have been wanting to do this as well so have done some preliminary looking into it. What you need is a Nokia mobile phone probably a 5110 or 6110 as these should be cheap s/h these days. These both have built in data modems and using a simple serial convertor which can be made for about £10 or bought for between £15-£20 can be plugged into the serial port on your linux machine. There are a few programs available with the best known one being gnokii http://www.gnokii.org/ or gsmlib http://www.pxh.de/fs/gsmlib/doc/index.html Hope this is of some help. Cheers, Ben

Sorry - sent this to the wrong place first time around! For what it's worth (probably not a lot...), I ended up with Slackware 8.0 and Mandrake Freq on one machine for comparison. Speaking as a complete non-Linux-expert, I found the only saving grace of Mdk was that it worked my borrowed USB camera, whereas Slack wouldn't. Some of Mdk's MORE frustrating habits included secretly writing to my OKI LED printer and re-arranging settings that I perfected years ago and then claiming that it was something it wasn't, and also inviting me to select what packages I'd like installed and then not bothering to install them. Slack, on the other hand, went in, got on, and generally did its bit. Thanks to John Seago's timely intervention, I discovered that early problems I was having were due to duff disks from Crazy Penguin. Linux Emporium did me much better!! I elected to install KDE on Slackware but soon began to hate its bloat. Then I discovered ICEWM and there was no looking back. Partly due to the very good documentation on how to configure ICEWM files, even I was able to get it to work and add my own favourite functions. If I can, anyone can. And ICEWM is FAST, even on an ex-skip P166! So Slack+ICEWM gets my vote (speaking as a beginner, remember). One or two people are gradually trying to steer me down the path of recompiling a kernel to get USB to work with Slack. I lay awake at night worrying about that, but at least I've got a Linux that works, enables me to run Netscape, Acrobat, Xv and things and start the learning process. Linux is a minefield of distro's, each with their own peculiarities, and I have found almost guaranteed that things are never where they are meant to be- even in distro-specific documentation. Hi Ricardo, I can't help you but I can offer sympathy. I have almost precisely the same problem as you and have hunted hi and low for a resolution without success. I am using Mandrake 8.0 and have even gone so far as to reload the whole system but still with the same problem. I thought it might have something to do with the auto mounting facility (supermount) but can't find anything that supports that theory either. I am interested to note Adam's comments and will have a look this evening to see if I can change the owner of my devices. I am literally at the point of changing back to Suse (you're right, I don't have any patience) as I know I can at least use that without fundamental problems like this. I wonder how many other people experienced the same problem. Mandrakes web site doesn't seem to make any mention of it or even tell you what a locked directory is! I suppose I may have changed something inadvertently but as a 'newbie' I tend to be very careful when 'tinkering' as I know I won't be able to rectify the result if I do screw up. I am saving my requests for help from the list until I really can't get my head round something (read- I'm afraid of making myself look a pratt!)!!!!!!!!!!! :<)) I'd be grateful to know if you do 'sort' the problem. default window manager

I'm trying to get X up and running on my 20MB RAM, (512kb video RAM) laptop, and thinking of maybe using blackbox as a WM (although I suspect most of my work will be done in console mode). It's a RedHat 6.1 box, and currently defaults into Gnome for it's GUI. I want to ditch that in favour of a more lightweight GUI. Where is the file that determines the default GUI when you log into X? If it works for you, then you have Internet access. That Freeserve tech support operation is a joke. There appears to be some sort of information flow blockage between Energis Squared (who provide the services) and Freeserve's customer services (who are supposed to help people use the service). MJR

Kia Ora folks, (and no - it's not a tasty orange fruit drink, but rather the Maori greeting) Just wanted to drop a quick hello all the way from New Zealand. We're currently in Kaikoura at a cyber cafe having been thwarted by the weather while trying to go whale watching off the coast :( Anyway, Linux over here doesn't appear to have been welcomed with too many open arms, although I'm sure that New Zealand has a growing army of Linux fans somewhere. Firstly of all the cyber cafes we've been too, none of them had the initiative to use Linux for their terminals. Everything Windows 98 over here (and a lot of them are used by teenagers to play network games - Wellington is stuff full of such cafes). There are a few north island companies that distribute the ISO images of various distributions, but haven't found anywhere that actually sells the official box sets. Anyway, having heard that Red Hat 7.2 has been officially released, that's something I look forward to trying out when I get back to the UK next week. BTW, New Zealand is probably the most beautiful country on the face of this planet and highly recommend it to anybody.
