A funny modem problem

By that I mean a funny 'modem problem' not a 'funny modem' problem. I have an old US Robotics 28k ISA modem in one of my machines here and I want to use it to connect via dial-up to try something. It certainly used to work but now it won't. I can query the modem from a terminal window and kppp will do the same but I cannot get it to dial. It goes through the motions but no dialling tone sound or any dialling sound although it is set to have the speaker on until it connects. After trying it 'disconnects' and tries again. If I disconnect the telephone lead from the telephone socket it makes no difference. It still runs through the same process without, apparently, recognising that there is no dialling tone. I have checked the telephone lead on another machine and it appears to be in perfect working order. I'm out of ideas. Anyone? Barry Samuels

The gnutella network was crap on Windows too, IIRC. Although, not as crap as Limewire or GTK-Gnutella (I presume you're referring to Morpheus).Audiogalaxy was by far the most efficient system I've used so far, no worries if clients disconnect. As for performance, I tried disabling my firewall (actually, that really only helped THEM, not me). The real problem was clients disappearing (i.e. disconnecting), which is as much a social thing as anything. It just then caused you to have to connect to someone else, and so on... high overhead. I guess it would be possible to do an openAG. It needs a database (pick one of many), web interface to the database (php?) and client that can resume downloads (hack an FTP client).The big problem with that is that most ISP's firewall off http requests to home users, to stop them from running webservers on their DSL/cable modem lines. Thinking about it, the web interface is optional, since it was just a neat way for AG to get some revenue- from marketing. Well, I'm gonna have a look at giFT and see what's up. Well, in terms of bandwidth it sucks. It absoloutely eats up bandwidth, which is a real problem for dial up. When you see your ppp monitor on your trusty gkrellm go up to 4.5k/s you think "I must be downloading *something*". Nope. Just the huge overhead on that particular protocol. So I tried gnutella for a while, and gnapster produced more downloads, even if it is just mp3's. *sigh* 2 more months and I move to a place with broadband.... ALUG early July @ King's Lynn

Script to resync software ide raid filesystem

Hi, I have an SME server running ide raid and was wondering if anyone knew of a way to code some sort of shell script so that if one of the drives fails you can power down the box replace the drive then run said script to initialise the partitions on the new device the same as the single drive of the mirror that is running and then start the resync proccess keeping you informed every now and then of hwo it's coming along and when it's finished, possibly. Newbie installing Mandrake

I am a total newbie to Linux and will be installing Mandrake 8.2 soon. Within all of the reference material I have, it suggests that you install Linux on it's own hard drive whenever possible, and that's what I intend to do. BUT, as I read on, it doesn't refer to a separate drive only how you may need to partition when running Windows on the same machine. I'm confused! I have 2 hard drives and am running Windows 98se on one, the other drive is empty and NOT partitioned, awaiting Mandrake's arrival. First off, does the Linux drive need to be partitioned in any way before the install? And secondly, when I am going through the install for Mandrake will it give me the choice to install on this (second) empty drive? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give for my questions above, and I'd appreciate any 'pointers' anyone could give that will help me prepare and get through this install! Kelly

cpu leak on sound apps

I'm getting a massive CPU leak on 2 related apps. First is GLAME, the other is SWEEP. They both 'do the same thing', that is, they are both progs for processing .wav files. They both produce 100% cpu usage when I open a .wav in them. I suspect it's not the app itself (2 massively broken apps- I doubt it), but perhaps my audio setup? They both use /dev/dsp, and use audio_in and audio_out for i/p and o/p. I used the same version of these apps with the same kernel on my Redhat installation on the same box, and don't get the same problem. Today's cool toy -- distcc

Describing itself as "napster for C programmers", this handy little tool from Martin Pool allows you to use the CPU power of all the compatible hosts on your local network. Unlike some similar tools, it doesn't require them all to have the same filesystems or configuration. distcc works by running a small daemon called distccd that listens on port 4200 of each host. You probably want to be careful with that because it allows anyone with a client to run any command. I strongly suggest that you run it as a totally unprivileged user that owns no files (eg make a new normal user called "distcc"), only run it when you're actually going to use it, restrict it to hosts that you control with iptables and so on. Generally, be a bit paranoid about it. The reason to use it is performance. On small compiles, it only shows itself marginally. Using distcc to build itself across two hosts here shows an improvement from 42.24 seconds to 24.78 seconds. Of course, there's normally a lot more than a straight compile to building a package. Building a simple debian package of distcc, including running configure and making the archive, shows only a slight improvement from 50.54 seconds to 45.37 seconds[1]. Still, it'll be worth having on larger projects. Apart from security, the other drawbacks (besides security) are that the network usage can go through the roof for large compiles (so, as for security, you probably don't want to do this on public systems on a public network) and that usage is currently restricted to gcc. It is a fairly young program, though, so who knows where this might go? Getting started with distcc is fairly easy. You just download the code from http://distcc.samba.org/ and compile it. It's not a very big compile, which is fortunate, because you can't use it to compile itself before you've compiled it for the first time... after that, you might find yourself wanting to use it for every compile! OK, this is actually a companion email to one going out in tonight's ALUG announce about the hosting changes, but here it is first, thanks to the way these things are scheduled. Newsletter: Please write or forward more interesting announcements to the newsletter address announce(a)lists.alug.org.uk because I'd like to put out more editions than one every week or so. IRC meetings: OPN is currently having even more problems than before. In addition to the netsplits, the most powerful of its IRC operators sending spam global notices at least twice daily now to raise money for himself. Despite a crushingly bad financial situation, he seems determined to hold onto complete control and incorporate the network as a Texas company. I've said before that I'd like us to move to a UK network, possibly either irc.underground.org.uk or irc.blitzed.org, but other suggestions (eg good chat servers) are welcomed. Name changes: A fully working non-Linux-kernel GNU is supposed to be released in the next six months. Should ALUG change its name (Anglian Local Users of Gnu -- ALUG?) to reflect this? Can you suggest Linux Graphics software?

Hello, I'm a bit of a Linux beginner and would appreciate any helpful suggestions. I have a web page that produces GIF images with variable text on them (produced by PHP4). I need to find some software that I can use to produce a file of instructions that can be sent to a commercial print company to use in typesetting to produce a similar (but vastly higher quality) image for printing. Does anyone know of such a package? (I would also need to be able to programmatically control the software from one of PERL, PHP,or BASH). Thanks Karl Middleton

What it sounds like, though, is that you have the Mandrake thing of logging you in immediately when you boot up. (I never liked that feature). To change that, I would have to hand that over to the rest of ALUG... Mandrake and Redhat use very custom scripts, that are a little tricky to figure out when you're not sitting at that computer. your 100 meg machine

16 meg of ram is a bit small for 'modern' linux/x86 as your machine will page a lot (save/get memory from disk) and this can slow it down enough for x86 to think things are broken. But for now try: a)Make sure you've got >64Meg of swap space so that x86 can 'fit' b)try and older version of x86 /linux - I've installed suse5.2 on a 386 with 4 meg of ram and got x86 working though its slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow c)put as much ram in your machine as you can fit - its quite cheap now! Don't use the autopartition function in Mandrake. I say that as a 'just in case' scenario. Typically you will only need 2 partitions:- root (/) and swap. Make swap 2x the size of your RAM (as a typical value). If you lack diskspace, 2 partitions is probably safest. Personally, I prefer to partition like this for a home computer:- /usr =large /home =very large /swap = 2x amount of RAM / = large-ish, (about 1.5 gig is plenty) Reasons: most new applications you install are in /usr, most data is in /home. If the worst comes to the worst and you need to reinstall, you can just 'borrow' the /usr and /home partitions, so no data lost. Laptop Mouse

I have an oldish laptop PII 286 with 96M RAM on which I have run Mandrake 7.2 for quite a long time. I recently tried to install MD 8.3 but it refused to recognise my PS2 mouse. I tried to install RH 7.3 and it could not find my mouse and invited me to install in text mode, which I did. On reboot kudzu finds a PS2 mouse, installs it but then it does not work. Today I installed RH 5.2 (yes I know it is old) and it found the mouse no problem. Then installed MD 7.2 again and it finds the mouse OK. What has happened in the later distributions that have stopped them detecting something prior versions found with ease? ian

Yep, there definitely are. I think the ALSA drivers do this, as do the commercial OSS ones. I think the Creative ones also do. I read a few days ago about someone who did just this, and the website was quite old. I'll try and dig out the URL from my history. Your distro is probably using the emu10k1 kernel driver, which doesn't support it as far as I can tell. Hi Everybody, I'm trying to get my soundcard to work under Linux (SuSe 7.1) and at present have no signal under Linux although the card works well in Win2k. I am trying to take the digital output from the card and then feed into "whatever" when I can eventually get a digital output. Does anyone know of a patch/driver if such a thing exists? Mandrake install problems

Thanks for these answers. I forgot to mention that the machine won't boot from the CD, only a or c drives. I have tried changing this in the bios setup but for some reason it only give those two options. It will boot from c drive into Linux, apparently with no problem, giving me access to the CD player (using mount/dev and so on). I would like to ask how to then reinstall the entire OS, from the CD, starting from Linux. Is there a simple command that will start the install? If you root around on the first CD there should be a folder called "images", with .img files. You could then make a floppy boot disk for Mandrake and do it using that. If you are in Windows, you can use rawwrite.exe (in dosutils on the CD), if you are in Linux: su to root mount the cdrom insert floppy disk, then do this command:- dd if=/mnt/cdrom/images/cdrom.img of=/dev/fd0 when it is done copying files, issue "reboot" or "shutdown -r now" with the floppy in the drive, and hey presto, the install will begin. Mandrake install problem

Whilst installing Mandrake from a CDROM the machine crashed, at the config X Windows stage (the long list of video cards). One result is that 'startx' doesn't work , server error no. 2. I posted a couple of weeks ago on this topic. Thanks to those whose responded. I have since tried installing the various XFree86 packages, but with no success. My idea now is simply to reinstall the entire OS from the CD, but I no longer have Win 98, so could someone tell me what command to use to start the install again? Again, I am new to Linux, so please excuse my sounding clueless..... Having said that pretty much all my installs are for servers, so they tend not to have complex graphics/sound setups, although my first proper Debian install was onto my Dell laptop which involved switching sources to testing to get XFree 4 to support my graphics card - but then my first proper Linux install involved an immediate kernel recompile to get token ring support for my network card, so I'm used to be awkward!!! True enough, nice graphics and less technical information always make the new user happy! The thing that always gets me is the number of times the Linux install is talked about as being too hard for the average Windows user. How many average Windows users have actually installed Windows? My parents have been using Windows since 3.1 on a 386 but never actually installed it - it always comes preinstalled! Your reply seems to answer whay I hadn't seen my post on the list. samba and win2k

Hi all, Just as I thought I had the hang of samba (fool!) I got a computer with windows 2000 and the whole authentication thing has gone up in smoke. If I create a mapped drive from the windows to the various samba shares on the linux server, when I log back on next day they refuse to reconnect, windows says "incorrect password or unknown username" and smb log says "rejecting user 'jenny': authentication failed." Now, even if I set a new samba password for jenny on the linux box I get this message. If I try to log in as a different user, the windows box say, oh, no, sorry, "the credentials supplied conflict with a different set of credentials" To make it worse the whole thing seems to be intermittent. And sometimes the mapped drives will reconnect to one of the linux servers but not the other, and the next time it will swap. Has anyone come across problems like this using samba with windows 2000? I'm using samba 2.0.8. Thanks, Jenny.

Yes, quite correct, that's why I referred to it in the past tense :-) Still available from linuxemporium, although, as you say, no longer being developed. My understanding is that, once installed, Storm can then be upgraded using the usual debian methods. Any ideas My guess is that root efective uid established by having the perl script setuid is not being passed on to the child process that is started by system(). In C I think the workaround is to call: setuid(geteuid()); This sets the real and saved uids to the same as the effective uid so from then on the process looks just like one that was run by root rather than one which is setuid (a setuid process has effectice uid set from the file, by real uid and saved uid come from the invoking user). Hopefully perl will have the equivalent to the C functions above. Steve.

Perl Arrays....

problems with the Alug website and email lists

Hi all, As of the other day Martyn who has so graciously provided alug with space for hosting on his dedicated server had to close it down at very short notice. As such the mailing list and website were rather dead for a while. We now have something sorted out in the interim, the alug webpage is being hosted by Martyn currently on space that he has again donated to us, and the mailing lists are being looked after by Jonathan or Black Cat networks. Anyhow normal service should resume soon...... Hi Everyone.... I'm trying to add users from a perl script, the script writes out lines of users to add to the system. Then a system call is made using : system("/bin/bash","/tmp/Seabed_Users"); In the file Seabed_Users is the following... adduser -g 45 -s /bin/false -p FtItmgt8G8RJY -d <directory>/username username When the file is run from the command line as root it works fine, however from the setuid script it doesn't work I get "adduser: unable to lock password file" in the error log.. Any ideas Thanks Simon

So, what died?

Debian security

I just had a thought- I still get updates from Redhat about vulnerablilities on their system- often 2 or 3 a week. And I was wondering- how come I don't keep having updates for Debian? I have security.debian.org in my sources.list, but apt-get upgrades rarely downloads anything. Surely more vulnerabilities exist? Tar - Argument list too long

I have a CD with a number of files on. I am trying to extract a list for files with a certain extension and then copy them to another location with the directory structure intact. To do this I choose tar and find: cd /mnt/cdrom tar -cf ~ash/test.tar `find . -name "*.dwg" -print` This would create a tarball, which I could copy, and expand into a new location. However, on running the command the following error is returned: "/bin/tar Argument list too long" There are probably around 4000 files on the CD with a .dwg extension. How can I get around this problem? Is there a better solution to what I am trying to achieve? -- Ashley T. I've got a Suse 5.2 that I've succesfully loaded on 386 with 4 meg ram! I've also got a RH4.2 but havent tried that but I believe once you've installed that and set up a large enough swap you can then put 7.2 on as an upgrade If its looking at the outside world check it with Saint/Satan though (see other mail in 11/06 listing) Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? mySQL Update problem....

Hi everyone... I'm trying to update a few columns on one row using an sql statement, but I don't seem to have the correct syntax... I'm using :- $dbh->do("update <tablename> set <column1> = <new-value1> <column2> = <new-value2> where <column3> = <value3>"); This doesn't work... however if update only one column it does, so I figure I must be missing something. I've looked through the docs and can only find update examples with one column to be updated. Please help!!!!!! Simon

Security and the Internet

(Running Debian 'Testing' with kernel 2.4.18) I chanced to read a copy of Linux Format magazine recently which had an article about security and appropriate software. That prompted me to install PortSentry. But not long after that it occurred to me that I am already running a firewall (iptables) and, in theory, nothing undesirable should be getting through (I did say 'in theory'). Under those circumstances PortSentry would seem to be surplus to requirements so I uninstalled it again. Is it overkill to run a firewall and PortSentry? The same article also mentioned Saint (previously Satan) so I had a go at that. It lists a number of potential weaknesses on my system, lpd for example, but doesn't say what the potential weaknesses might be or how to fix them. How can I find out more on this? This then prompted another train of thought. If inetd starts (and I assume stops) services such as Exim when an internet connection is established why do we need /etc/ppp/ip-up.d and ip-down.d to start and stop additional services. Why can't it all go in inetd (or Xinetd)? Although I have a dial-up connection at the moment I am looking to the future to when I may have ADSL (should BT ever get round to my area - ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!) and a permanent connection. iptables: modprobe failing

When I recompiled my kernel to 2.4.18, I added basically most of the Netfilter modules as, err.. modules. However; modprobe ip_tables /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o : init_module: Device or resource busy. lsmod doesn't show any ip_tables or similar modules loaded. Hi all, I'm looking to put Linux onto a couple of i486s with 16 and 12 MB RAM, and 420MB HDDs. I have got RH7.2 but that won't install on these machines. I'm looking for something older (maybe RH 6.0/6.2 ish), or some other distro that is suited to this type of machine. If anyone has any old discs around that they don't want I'd gladly refund postage etc... I have never used Debian, or Slackware although I'm told that they might be best for this purpose. CGI perl script help needed....

Hi Everyone... I've been asked to do a cgi in perl that will create and delete user accounts.. So I've setuid a script, but can't get it to add users using a system call.. system("/usr/sbin/useradd", "-g 45 -s /bin/false -d /home/popusers/users/goresmail/<userid here>"); The apache error log is saying there no such group 45, when there is.. The command works fine at the command line, I'm just stuck as to what I'm missing or doing wrong... TIA Simon

Hi Folks Last weekend I received an email with the subject header of:- Need Leads - Sales? Here's A Solution From: "paul.corner" <paul.corner(a)tesco.net> Extremely annoyed when I saw the "From" field, I decided to try to track the b****d down that was forging my name. The trail left in the email header proved to be next to useless as was to be expected. A google search of the IP address the miscreant had included in the spam provided a little info - One link indicated that you would be forwarded on to another site where a vb script would infect your system and harvest the address book. Going to the IP address - http://32.97.166.75/usinet.chan44, I was indeed redirected somwhere. This was turning in to a tiresome trail as the initial java script did not produce any useable IP info.... Going back to the first IP address of 32.97.166.75, I quickly found it to be an AT&T server with a UK based service center provided by IBM. A short email to IBM pointing out that their services were being used in propogating viruses and in time the practise would damage their corporate reputation. Some small success can be reported - IBM has removed the full URL from their server - A slap in the face of the bastard that faked MY address. Regards, Paul. I normally use my pc for internet use, gaming, and home/office use with a printer, scanner and digital camera. I am looking to use linux for more of the same, but intend to start learning something useful with my pc, maybe html, perl, c++ or something else, suggestions for a newbie most welcome. Although a total linux newbie, I started out with computers at the age of 7 with a vic-20, progressing to spectrum, atari, amiga, dx2-66 pc all the way to my present machine which i built myself. My short description on why I have chosen LINUX is:- Microsoft's Monopoly Linux being virtually 100% crash proof Designed to be a server at no outrageous cost If you don't like the way a program runs you can add your "two pennith" to it It has followers like your good selves who help Linux virgins like me and helps Linux to overtake Microsoft I am sure there are many other good reasons on why Linux is the way forward and I look forward in finding them. alt key not working/euro?

OK, hopefully one last thing in my X saga. (now where are those tt fonts I had from my M$ days?...). My alt key isn't working. I'm sure there's a real simple way to add it in XF86Config-4 - anyone know? And has anyone figured out how to do a euro sign? I can't seem to find any fonts that support it. Thanks! OK. So I'm building my debian system, how to say... *minimally* :). I have X up and running, but I need to get sound working. I have a Soundblaster Live Platinum card, (EMU10K). I'll be compiling in support for that with my my new kernel. However, I'm a little confuzed as to which set of sound drivers to use. I have a MIDI keyboard, and would like to take advantage of this. I also use XMMS, Ogle, and all the normal desktop stuff. Anyone have any ideas could elucidate for me? (Mr.Casal?) X server: connection refused

If I su to root in a terminal, and try to edit a file using emacs, I get the following error: Xlib: connection to "X0.0" refused by server Xlib: client is not authorized to connect to server emacs: cannot connect to Xserver :0. Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use '-d' It's OK is I log in as root, or as a user, it only has the problem when I su. (This error occurs with any program that uses X). initrd, lilo and general weirdness

1st off: Adam:- for some bizarre reason, my box booted into 2.4.18 this morning, even though 3 reboots still took it to 2.2.19 last night. I simply have no idea why. One question: why do people seem to dislike initrd.img's? I'm gonna have to compile a kernel anyway cos I got all sorts of unresolved symbols, and some of the modules I'd prefer to have compiled in anyway. For some reason, lilo won't let me boot to my second disk. I have a second HD, with a copy of lilo on it (from previous installation). I would like the lilo on hda1 to boot onto hdb1, but for some reason it won't let me do this this morning (it just ignores me-no errors!) my lilo.conf line for it is: other=/dev/hdb1 label=Redhat alias=2 -General Weirdness Section- Last night, running on my old kernel, I copied the kernel source from a CD to my HD. While it did this my Xserver hung up until it had finished. The same happened when I un-bzipped it. grrr. Adam suggested it might be a h/w problem, so I booted into RH (which can't do *now*, grrr), and quite happily copied 4gigs from one directory to another, whilst mucking about with xmms, no lock up. software for install day

Hi people, Something just struck me, do you guys have all the software you want for install day? I don't know if i am going to make it and I am sure you will have lots of lovely bandwidth at UEA etc. but are there any special requests? If so i can get downloading now and stick things on CD and post them to someone who will be there...
