Security, firewall?

On Thursday broadband to my address will be enabled/activated, hitherto I have just used linux, as I have been both too lazy and incompetent to set up any security or a firewall, obviously with the thing being on non-stop I'm going to have to mend my ways. On my box I have an iteration of Slackware 10 on each disk, Debian Sarge on the first disk and a space for Free/Open BSD on the second, I also have a spare box with, I think, enough resources to run another set of Slackware or BSD. I am aware of the existence of Iptables, no more than that. My question is which book should I buy, Building Internet Firewalls, or Practical Unix & Internet Security, both by O'Reilly? Then all I will have left to learn is Emacs, Networking, Email with Sendmail, Fetchmail Exim etc., etc.... -- John Seago Linux User #219566 (http://counter.li.org)

sane, slack10 and usb scanner

I am haaving trouble getting my usb scanner to work with sane under slack 10. Basicaly the scanner is not detected sort of. scanimage -L gives no scanner found but sane-find-scanner correctly finds and identifies it (found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0, product=0x2f11) at libusb:001:002). I don't think it is a permissions problem as I get identical results as root. I have tried adding an entry to /etc/hotplug/usb/libsane.usermap but this made no difference. libusb is version 0.1.8 sane is version 1.0.14 Any ideas? Ian

Good home wanted for 400MHz PII in silver ATX midi tower, with 128MB RAM, 6.4GB HDD, CD-ROM, floppy, network and old Philips 17" monitor (the type with the little LCD panel at the front). It was my main server until recently, with 100% reliability. SuSE 9.1 is freshly installed and working fine. I would donate it to charity but for some reason it's clever enough to refuse to install Windows. Because I'm moving soon I need to clear it to save space and clutter. Available to collect either from Wymondham or Histon.

Now that I have almost completely migrated over to my new machine the old one is up for grabs. I can't remember exactly when I built it, I think it was some time early 2001, but at the time it was a pretty cutting edge machine. Details Super expensive coolermaster Aluminium case (cost over £100 back then) AMD 1 Ghz Athlon 640MB RAM 40GB Seagate Barracuda HDD (there were more but I've nicked them) Pioneer DVD (A04) DVD-R/RW * see note below DVD ROM drive Floppy (a new one) ATI Rage 128 card (again I've nicked the Nvidia card that was in it) 3Com NIC Creative live 256 gold (or something like that) sound card (more inputs and outputs than you'll ever need) It's an Abit kt7-raid board so the drive is running on a highpoint raid controller and each of the optical drives is on it's own channel on the VIA controller. 300W PSU Logitec Wireless Keyboard and Mouse combo Naturally this machine was built to run Linux and apart from a brief flirtation with Windows XP that is all it has ever run. Everything is detected and installed with ease on our favourite Operating System. It will come with SuSE 9.1 preinstalled (and an installation DVD-R) To be honest the CPU fan is sounding a bit stressed so that will be replaced before it is sold. Also the DVD Writer has had a tendancy to make DVD coasters recently. Not sure if it's the cheapo media I have been using or the drive on it's way. You should probably presume that the drive has had it, I am only leaving it in place on the chance that it is configuration or media. This has been a great machine, enjoying uptime only limited by SuSE's kernel update release cycle. I would love to see it go to another Linux user as that was what it was built for. £150.00 Also Dell P991 19" monitor (is exactly the same as a Sony model) Trinitron flat faced screen, happy up to 1600x1200 but I ran it at 1280x1024 A really nice monitor but it's big and HEAVY £50 Or the machine plus the monitor for £185 Also Yamaha 8x4x24 SCSI CDR/W (yes it is a bit slow, but I swear it has NEVER made a coaster under Linux) in an external SCSI case (Ultra D-Sub connector) Plus an Adaptec SCSI card (linux friendly) and all the leads to use the Yamaha either internally or in the external case. £20 Plextor Ultraplex 40x Max PX-40TSi SCSI CD-ROM I used this with the kit above, the plex internally and the Yamaha in the external case (although I do have another external case for the plex if needed) Probably a bit redundant now but at the time this drive was the fastest way to rip CD-Audio. £10 Or everything listed above for £200

Problems with NTP

I'm having trouble synchronising the time of my network clients using NTP. I have a server (helios.perrings) running NTP and listening on UDP 123 (confirmed usinf lsof -i). I also have configured the clients to request time from this server. However, the clients report that no time server can be found. From the documentation, it appears that the src port and dest port should both be 123, but when I do a tcpdump, I get the following results: 20:58:27.476153 IP 192.168.0.10.32851 > helios.perrings.ntp: NTPv4 client, strat 0, poll 4, prec -6 20:58:27.476927 IP helios.perrings.ntp > 192.168.0.10.32851: NTPv4 server, strat 0, poll 4, prec -18 The client's (192.168.0.10) return address is 32851, not 123 as expected. I've been trying to find where this alternative port is set, but going round in circles. Any ideas, suggestions, please? Loki Games

Does anybody own a copy of Soldier of Fortune for Linux that they are bored with/wish to sell. I have checked with all the UK Loki resellers I can find and nobody has stock any longer. Unlike some of the earlier loki ports it is not possible (AFAIK) to simply use a combination of the linux demo binary and the Windows version maps with this game.

samba

Anyone with any experience of connecting Linux and OSX? I have 2 linux boxes (SuSe 8.2 & 9.0) at work which seem to connect fine over Samba to Winders machines. The 8.2 doesn't connect to a Samba share on OSX (jaguar), whereas the 9.0 connects - but painfully slow. Any experiences with Samba working at completely different speeds?

Linux Certification

Hi, Has anyone any experience of Linux certification. I started looking at Linux+ by compTIA, but couldn't find anyone running courses / exams in Norfolk. Looking at certification again, LPI (www.lpi.org) seems to be the best way to go, and the exams can be sat in a office on Prince of Wales Road. Sound issue

After jumping though a few hoops getting RTCW Enemy Territory to install on my AMD 64 machine I had one remaining problem...no sound I was getting the error "Could not mmap /dev/dsp" Anyway after finding the ALSA FAQ I discovered that running echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss Resolves this issue for me. However I want to make this change persistant, I can't add this the the et start up script as it requires root to set. What would be the "clean" way of making this a permanent change. Or do I just drop it in an init script.

Formatting a CF card

Last week I bought a 256MB CF card in a PC shop in Brussels, having filled the one in my camera. It seemed to be OK but now the camera is reporting card errors. Can't take the card back so I'd like to try reformatting it. The camera refuses and my Sharp Zaurus sees it but can't read or write. I have a USB card reader that will take it, but how do I use that under Linux? -- GT

Hi Folks, Does anyone know of an on-line reference which summarises the technical aspects of writing CDs (CD-R and CD-RW)? The reason is that CD-RW software tends to ask you to make choices, using terms which I don't think I understand well enough, and I'd like to have a little "bible" which tells ma all about it, at least in summary. Erm, the only extra info I've seen on one is the "dcim/cameramodel" directory, which will be created when you shove the card in the camera anyways. I don't know of any extra info that the camera sets (mine sets the SD card name, but never mind... It does that on any card you throw at it... so now I have lots of cards labelled "Concorde" which is, erm, handy. Hi I have a 6 in card reader it works fine under SuSe 9.0 as Sdb1, and in Digicam as media/sdb1 On Suse 9.1 i get error message' error could not enter folder /media/usb-storage-9205291:0:0:1p1 and cannot get Digikam to reconise it Googling, tells me to install/remove hotplug patch but I cannot find any succesful results, and I have tried all suggestions I found. How much RAM can be grabbed?

Hi Folks, As we all know, the "free memory" reported by e.g. 'free' is usually very small. E.g. on this machine (endowed with "a massive 128MB RAM" (OK it's an oldish laptop and I'm cynically quoting typical ad material) I get > free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 126024 117952 8072 0 1476 50184 -/+ buffers/cache: 66292 59732 Swap: 400640 124092 276548 and of course the "free 8072" is illusory. My Question is: suppose I want to embark on a RAM-intensive task, e.g. a numerical computation with large objects, or maybe a CD burn, where I'd like to make the most use of RAM. I can tell the application how much RAM it can expect to use. So: How can I determine, by some system command, how much of the RAM is actually up for grabs. so that I can tell the program to use (e.g.) 64MB RAM? In other words, how could I find out that 64MB RAM would be available? And should I use 'nice' to make sure that the program can jump the queue? All advice appreciated! How to Allocate Huge Amount of RAM to Process?

I'll continue today's RAM usage theme... I understand from references around the web that, by default, Linux kernels will only allocate a maximum of 3GB of RAM+swap to a single process. I've been writing a program (in Perl) to perform some numerical calculations on very large data sets, and, by being very careful to do things in the order that minimizes the overlap between different pieces of original and calculated data being needed in RAM+swap, and making sure that, as soon as a given list of numbers is finished with, a block ends, so that Perl's garbage collector gets called, I've got the program to run within this limitation (it's now using just over 2GB at peak.) The trouble is, I've gone about as far as I can with this efficiency drive, and in a couple of weeks, I have to do the same thing, with even bigger data sets. Since I have plenty of physical space (1GB RAM+10GB swap,) I'd like to get the kernel to allocate more to my program. I know there are various patches with names involving "HIGHMEM." My current kernel is 2.6.6, with # CONFIG_NOHIGHMEM is not set CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G=y # CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G is not set CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y Would setting CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G=y and recompiling the kernel help me, or do I need to do something tricksier, please? -- Thanks Dan Hatton <http://www.bib.hatton.btinternet.co.uk/dan/>

Right, here's the basic situation... We've got a FreeBSD 4.9 machine, origionally configured for NAT only and was doing a damned good job of it. Now, you see, we've got an evil windows box to go on the external network, so, ofcourse, my first thought was to throw a filtering bridge between on the firewall as well, now, this too works quite well... But... What appears to be shafted is connecting to the windows machine via the NAT. Any ideas? Basic setup is something like this... |Windows Machine| | FreeBSD Router | | | =========> |rl0 dc0 | x.x.x.49 ===> Interweb | x.x.x.58 | | vr0 | | | Internal Network Masqueraded 192.168.1.0/24 The internal network can see the Interweb (and our other hosts out there in x.x.x.x land ;) *EXCEPT* x.x.x.58, which it can't see, which is (to say the least) rather frustrating. As for the Broadband hardware - I use aDraytek Vigor all in one router /modem at work - never had a problem in the past two years. At home an ethernet X-modem from ADSL nation, in conjunction with a Buffalo Airstation. This has worked fine with a combination of Yellowdog Linux, OSX and Mac os9 no problems. Still unplugged it last night though - anyone with experience of how ADSL modems handle lightning!? Phil

2 HP 1097C Monitors for free

Hi Folks, I have two old (getting on for 10 years) HP A1097C 21" monitors which I would be happy to deliver free to anyone who would like to have them. They give a very nice display (one of them is slightly less sharp then the other). The one thing you really need to know is that they have 3-cord RGB fixed-frequency input with Sync on Green. Therefore they needs a video card which supports this. XFree86 will support Sync on Green with a suitable card. I could supply the XF86Config file I used to use. There are also a couple of HP "xterm" boxes that they were originally used with. However, these are not a lot of use owing to very small RAM (and I think one of them doesn't work anyway). However, if you're interested I'll throw these in too. But they're really only tip-worthy these days. The other thing you need to know is that these monitors are very large and very heavy. So not much use if you're tight for space or have a dodgy back. Hello! First I guess I should introduce myself, my name's Lee Ellison and I don't wanna use Windows anymore! I posted a request for information about Linux on Livejournal about a month ago and after reviewing everyones opinions and doing a wee bit of research myself, I decided that Suse Linux 9.1 Personal would be the best thing for me (in my uneducated opinion!). A Livejournal user called 'Sunflowerinrain' sent me a link to you guys (ta! ;)) and i'd like to come along to your next meeting. I live in Norwich, Bowthorpe in fact, so The City Gate isn't far away at all. My computer is a Dell GX270 Optiplex with a 20Gb HD, 512Mb RAM and a 2.6GHz (can got to 3.2) Intel Pentium 4 processor. It doesn't, however, have a CD-R/W, only a CD-ROM. Nor does it have a floppy drive. I quickly discovered that the lack of CD-R/W was quite fundemental after I spent 12 hours downloading Suse 9.1........... But I digress. I wanna run Linux cos, quite frankly, i'm frightened about the security issues that dog Windows. I'm still relatively new to computers, but i'm learning very quickly. I'm already dabbling with HTML and learning how to use Macromedia Flash - I don't wanna be a web designer, every man and his dog wants to be a web designer! It just interests me and also, being new to Norwich and having no friends (i'm NOT sad by the way!) it keeps me entertained! I have another computer, some old Celeron thing that ran Win98SE. A friend who's coming over from Oz shortly is gonna help me get it running so I can use it's CD-R/W - she knows what she's doing, I don't have a scooby, so please don't ask! Not sure if this is what you wanted to know, but i'll be at the next meeting and you can ask me whatever you like then. I mentioned this to various people earlier, and they seemed interested, so I thought I'd vaguely float the idea here. Would people be interested in a VoIP (Voice over IP) talk? I've been playing with it this week and setting up a connection to the normal phone network using an ISDN line, with a hardware VoIP phone locally. I'm also planning to look at Linux based softphones over the next week and should have a magic PCI card coming which will let me hook up to a normal phone line, so hopefully should be able to come up with bits of interest to anyone who's curious about this stuff. How to unlock a directory?

I've been using kde for a while now but have recently found my cdrom to be inaccesible. It's on \mnt\cdrom but the properties describe it as a Locked Directory. The icon shows the directory with a little padlock on it. I've tried changing permissions (both as a 'normal' user and as root) but nothing changes. It means I can't install packages using rpm from the original Mandrake cdrom. The problem applies to other cdroms as well. It happened at the same time with the \mnt\floppy drive but that cleared when I put another floppy in. Any ideas, please? Hi All, I have just joined the list and am introducing myself as suggested in the confirmation mail. My name's Colin Brett. I am, by profession, a UNIX systems administrator and (reluctant) Oracle DBA for a firm in Cambridge. I've been using various flavours of UNIX for over 10 years now and got into the Linux scene about 4 years ago. I don't unfortunately use Linux in my job but have been using RedHat and/or Mandrake at home on a regular basis. In fact, the only reason I have a machine at home is because of Linux: there's no way I'd pay the Microsoft tax for a windows machine! I'm willing to share any experience you may find useful from the wider UNIX arena: scripting, administration, a bit of Perl programming, some HTML. Just drop me a line or to the list in general and I'll see what I can come up with. I can't promise a quick answer, however, as work and family committments (a 9 month old baby boy!) do keep me rather busy. In the meantime, what is the "form" for asking questions on the list, so I get the netiquette right! Broadband Hardware

Dear all, If anyone out there has been looking for an alternative to Sage or Quickbooks that they can run on a Linux or BSD box, then take a look at phpOrganisation. phpOrganisation is an open source php/mysql based business process application, which is aimed at UK organisations (because it understands VAT). It features: An address database, which is the central information around which phpOrganisation structures its processes. All entities relating to the organisations processes are in this database, whether employee, supplier, associate or personal. Customer relationship tools. Two marketing lists are available; the tracker, and the client list. Move a contact onto one of these lists, and then keep a record of emails, phone conversations and use the "next contact due" feature to act as a reminder for re-contacting. Ordering System. Generate purchase orders for products and services, view the PO and print it out for the supplier. As invoices are received from the supplier, register the invoices and track the time left to pay on the supplier invoice page. Project and Contracts can be set up and time and costs can be allocated to a project or contract. Track your costs to learn what it really costs to deliver your services and develop your products. Generate quotations and store a record of previous quotations. phpOrganisation assists you in storing your quotation wordprocessor files in a single location on your filesystem. phpOrganisation doesn't generate web based quotations, in the way it does for purchase orders, invoices and statements, as this lacks the flexibility that is required in drafting quotations for most small businesses. The former may make an easer start, which can be developed into something else if there is a big enough base, later. The ALUG Web site is already there, along with this mailing list. It looks as though all you really need to do is find the bodies and perhaps when you think you've got enough organise a meeting for them. So where do I start then?

Met Chris from frugalIT in Witham the other night at my A12 business networking club meeting and he said would be good to set something up for the - let's say "lower" regions of East Anglia - Norwich is a bit too far and Southend is an entirely different world to Chelmsford. So, where do I start then? Do I buy a domain or set up a subdomain? Anyone wanna point me in the right direction? I may not be a sysadmin wizard but I'll help all I can to set up and run... I'm planning a "training" event for ecademy sometime in the next month or two so may just slip Linux on all the machines and run a dual event. Problem delivering local mail

Hi Folks, I am having trouble sending mail to other users on my PC. I used to me able to type "mail tux" at the shell prompt and create a mail which was delivered to user "tux" on my local PC but can no longer do this. Now if I try and send mail to local user "tux" then something on my system is incorrectly expanding the "To" address to tux(a)uk2.net (uk2 is my ISP) and sending it to my ISPs SMTP server, rather than simply putting it in tux's local inbox. My message to my local user therefore gets bounced back by UK2 as undeliverable (i.e mail to local users is now being treated as mail for remote users and leaves my PC rather than remaining on it and being instantly put in their local mailbox). If I try and send mail to my local user "tux" by quoting the full name of the local PC after his username: tux(a)bobbin.haberdashery.willowwindmill.net it again leaves my PC and is sent to my ISPs SMTP mailserver and is bounced back as undeliverable. I have copied the full text of the error messages I am getting onto the following webpage rather than appending them to this message: www.k1ngph1cher.uklinux.net/bobbinmailerrors.htm I guess I must have misconfigured something but am unsure what and don't know which files I need to edit to correct this. What do I need to tweak so that mail for local users is routed locally within my PC instead of being sent externally via my ISP? In case it is relevant the particular PC concerned (bobbin.haberdashery.willowwindmill.net) is running Slackware 10.0 Second question: Because of my mail delivery tests I now appear to have several test mail messages stuck in a mail queue somewhere on my PC. How do I delete all these duff messages from the mail queue so I can start sending valid emails again? Ta muchly! Ian.

gtoaster

Hi Folks, I'm experimenting with gtoaster (can use xcdroast OK but interested by this other program). All I'm trying to do at the moment is to write a backup copy of my home directory ( /home/ted ) to CD. However, I'm up against a blank wall at one point, and I'd be grateful if anyone can help me past it. 1. Startup gtoaster -- OK 2. In top left-hand panel, click "+" of "Unix Tree" to expand it -- OK 3. Click on "+" of "home" to expand it -- OK 4. "Drag&drop" "ted" into borrom RH panel -- OK (list of files flashes by) 5. Bottom LH panel has an item "CDROM" whose "+" expands to "ted" which in turn expands to the files in /home/ted. So far so good, apparently. However, at the bottom is "Fillstate 0MB/ 746<B" and there seems to be nothing I can do to get it to recognise that there's 488MB in the filesystem /home/ted. Also, on the lower RH panel, all it says is "ted 4096 bytes" which is just the size of the directory stub itself, not of its contents. Gtoaster will now allow me to write a CD, but all it contains is the directory stub. So that's my blank wall: I want to climb past this so that it actually writes the files under /home/ted to the CD, and I can't for the life of me see what the trick is! Nor does the documentation help. gtoaster-1.0beta6 on Red Hat 9.1 So all suggestions gratefully received. Hello, I would like to extend the discussion about weekend trials or expositions of various equipment or software. I consider myself to be an ordinary modern linux user that struggles with the most basic problems of everyday useage. I don't want to list the most common difficulties that face the 'ordinary (none technical) user' because I don't know what they might be, but plugins for the very popular browsers konqueror and mozilla 1.7 could possibly be dealt with via the alug mailing list. I don't just mean refering users to a web site, which could be a good thing, but actually creating emails that show 'step by step' how to install a certain plugin or other task. Our top exponents of linux might enjoy writing these postings. Documentation relating to linux across the board is poor, in my opinion. Could we as a user group make a difference to this problem of documentation by helping with a (very loosely) structured education program that is conducted via the alug mailing list? The mailing list serves the really knowledgable linux users quite well in a conversational way, but now that linux is so much more mainstream, it would be nice to punctuate these savvy conversations with (possibly) regular(ish) instruction on the basics of linux. We could focus on the most basic configuration tasks via our mailing list to help NEW users of linux, and still enjoy the very stimulating discussions of experienced users. I would enjoy reading the unsolicited configurational instruction of an experienced user that was posted to the list on more BASIC topics. It could become normal practice. External CD-RW for laptop?

Hi Folks, Has anyone any comments on possibilities for external CD-RW units for attaching to a laptop? DVD support is not needed, but if inevitable in order to have CD-RW then so be it. All I'm really interested in is writing CDs (there's already an internal CRDOM reader). I suppose USB is the way to go. One thing I'm (perhaps too theoretically) concerned about: To write a CD, the unit will need power which would be drawn from the laptop (unless the unit has an external power supply). Any known issues about this aspect of the matter? Might the laptop not be able to cope with the power demand? Any other issues? Total ignoramus here! Problem configuring procmail

Hi Folks, I am having a bit of hassle configuring procmail. I have created a test user called tux and have confirmed I can send mail to him. I have then created a /home/tux/.procmailrc file containing: [tux@alice tux]$ cat .procmailrc VERBOSE=on MAILDIR=$HOME/mail PMDIR=$HOME/.procmail LOGFILE=$PMDIR/log INCLUDERC=$PMDIR/rc.testing I have also created a /home/tux/.procmail directory and created a rc.testing file in it containing: [tux@alice tux]$ cat ~/.procmail/rc.testing :0: * ^Subject:.*HOT SPAM.HOT I then created a /home/tux/.forward file (which I copied from a book and don't understand) containing: [tux@alice tux]$ cat ~/.forward "|IFS=' ' && exec /usr/bin/procmail -f || exec 75 tux" If however I try to send tux an email I get an error email back containing the following: ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- "|IFS=' ' && exec /usr/bin/procmail -f || exec 75 tux" (expanded from: tux) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- sh: cannot use & in command 554 "|IFS=' ' && exec /usr/bin/procmail -f || exec 75 tux"... Red Hat 9 registration & apm command

Can anyone help me to solve 2 problems I have with red hat 9? 1. I cannot register for updates. The first step (privacy statement) remains blank with the cursor showing busy. The next set of steps are filled in with the required information, but finishes with the error, problem registering user name. 2. If I use the apm command to suspend or standby, the screen shuts down then immediately turns itself back on, then the terminal window continually writes, root @ localhost root, until it is full. Then all programs do not respond,then eventually the whole screen is locked so the computer has to be turned off. Bob Jarvis. (New to Linux)

I've been thinking along similar lines for a while now. I must say that with Linux I find that it's not the lack of info. that's a problem but the excess of info. To start with most pieces of software installed usually have a whole chunk of documentation (admittedly it can be patchy, but, IME, it's usually reasonably complete) and then there's the Linux Documentation Project that has tons of stuff and then there's loads of mailing lists like this that can be searched with Google. Often what's needed when you're just getting into something is quick concise answers to some of the basic problems i.e. how do I do a basic install/configure of this? or I installed that and now this is broke how do I fix it? (and some help in finding your way around the terminology) In mailing lists like this it's not always easy to indicate what you have under your belt already so that those who reply can pitch the answer at the right level. Perhaps a better way is for us to help ourselves by using the wiki pages and instead of HOWTOs adding our own HOWIDIDITS? What I was thinking is that whenever one of us, whatever our level of experience with GNU/Linux, tackles and resolves a problem, e.g installing a bit of hardware or configuring/upgrading a piece of software, we could add a wiki page with a short write up and appropriate links to other sources of info. we used. Not as formal or structured as a HOWTO perhaps just a simple log of steps taken and what happened, but I'm sure that over time it would contain useful hits and tips. Horde webmail and proxies, any experience anyone?

Meeting report - City Gate, Thursday 8th July

Another successful City Gate meeting! Not as many turned up as said they would, but still new and unseen-for-some-time faces there. Present were: Jonathan (Noodles) Martijn (mak) Adam (quinophex) Paul (paul_c) James (mChicago) Bryce Girlfriend of Bryce (sorry, didn't catch your name! Bryce, can you fill us in?) Kirsten (wildduck) We missed Elisabeth (sunflowerinrain) who was stuck in traffic and Brett (iDunno) who couldn't make it, also MJR (slef) and a couple of others who evidently were thwarted in the final hours. A convivial meeting as usual, made more interesting by the new people and the cool little phone/PDA gadget Martijn showed us. Lots of Linux talk, drinking of beer and munching of crisps and peanuts, frozen-bubble on Paul's laptop, and I am sure many things I missed while I was reading Linux User&Developer magazine or while I was just not paying attention :) Hope everyone will be there again at the next City Gate meeting (Thursday 12 August 8pm) Sadly Adam and I will be in France then, but back as usual in September. /Kirsten

Problems sending replies to ALUG list

I am confused. Each time I have tried to send replies to posts on the ALUG list this morning an error box has appeared on my PC saying: ERROR: Sending failed: a SMTP error occurred. Command: DATA Response: 452 Filesystem error - message not accepted The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder. Note other messages will also be blocked by this message as long as it in the 'outbox' folder. The following transport protocol was used: smtp://smtp.ntlworld.com:25 I have therefore resent my reply. However looking at my inbox it does seem though that this error message is wrong and my replies have indeed reached the ALUG list ok. Anyone any idea what is going on? I am creating the messages using kmail 1.3.2 (part of Debian 3.0) and seem to be able to send test messages to my other ISP account ok. Ian.

The library has grown unwieldy now, and too big to haul to any meetings really except Sunday afternoon meetings such as at Syleham (short staggering distance from car boot to table top). (Thanks to everyone who has donated books lately!) So I draw everyone's attention to http://www.alug.org.uk/contrib/?LibraryBooklist which, now I look at it, ought to have ISBNs listed and a short description of each book, to aid people in making their selections. The idea is that those who would like books from the library place their requests with me or Adam (quinophex) and we will deliver to the next meeting, whenever that may be. If you live outside the Norwich area and can't attend Norwich meetings, we'd appreciate it if you'd cover the postage costs for us to post the book to you. Books can be returned, more or less at leisure (no time limit on the loan as such, in practice six months is about the limit) in the same fashion, or posted, or whatever as long as we get them back :) I will endeavour to get descriptions up as soon as possible. /Kirsten

ISBN 0-9541604-9-5 contains essays about free software and copyleft culture. The CD contains a dyne:bolic bootable distribution. I'd be happy if you pass it on again when you're done. If unwanted, I offer this to the ALUG library. I also have LinuxUser&Developer issue 36. The unopened CD pack is the one with the Sun desktop and 500 packages. New CD drive not accessable

Hi Folks, I installed Debian 3.0 on my PC ages ago and have been happily using it ever since. However, a few minutes ago, I upgraded my CD drive from a standard CD drive to a CDRW drive and I can now no longer access any CDs. If I try to mount a CD then I get an error message saying it is not a valid block device: giraffe:~# mount /dev/hdd /mnt2 mount: /dev/hdd is not a valid block device If however I scan through the output of dmesg I can see it listed: hdd: ATAPI CD-RW 16/12/40X, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive What do I need to tweak in order to be able to access CDs using this new CD drive? Thunderbird checking mail in all IMAP folders

This came up last night... I'm using Thunderbird (0.6 on Linux, 0.7.2 on Windows) against a Courier IMAP server, and use mailfilter server-side to filter email into 70 different folders. By default Thunderbird doesn't check all folders for new messages when you hit "Get Messages". You can right-click a folder, select the Properties menu, and tick "Check this folder for new messages". KDE killed

I did a silly thing. I run Mandrake 9.2 and have a separate partition for home. On a spare partition I installed Slackware 9.1 and set its home to the above mentioned partition. Then under slack set up a new user with same name/password as the main user in home (hopefully) to access all the settings/data. Trouble is in doing this I seem to have knackered KDE. It stops with a message about the dcop server. Fortunately Gnome still works fine, and seems to pick up the entire KDE desktop icons and menus - that's how I am sending this email. So the question is how to get kde going again, and a corollary, how should I have set up Slackware to be able to access my existing home directory in the first place? Ian

Yes, according to /. MS have a knowledgebase article that warns about the problems of large user groups. I quote; " If a user group contains more than 500 users, the hair colour of the "person" .... changes to grey. This does not affect the functionality of the group or the users for whom the hair colour ... changes. This issue affects built-in groups, local groups, and global groups." Well - I'm getting fine service at home from Talia at £19.99 a month - plus the VAT, and no contract. At work I've got everything running through biscit.net - about £27 when I set it up, but I think they've done some cut price deals for home users now. A fine company run by people with real names that you can contact. Neither seem to have a cap on how much is downloaded that I've reached, even downloading Mandrake PPC and Yellow dog iso's in a day. That's my tuppence worth anyway.

Unfortunately my Father-in -law was rushed into hospital on Monday morning. this has meant that my wife and I are taking my Mother -in-law into hospital every day. I shall therefore not be available to carry forward any of the matters which I started action on in the recent past for some days/weeks. Knoppix & modems

Someone at work posted a question to the message board there. I suggested a nasty hack as a solution, could someone suggest anything better please? The person is using knoppix, running from the CD (no HD install) and they are trying to get the drivers for their new intel PCI hardware modem working. The problem is the install script is set up to install the binaries to /usr/sbin and that directory is read only. He assumed that this was because the directory is on the CD and not in the ramdisk. Under that assumption I suggested the following... copy /usr/sbin to /home/knoppix/sbin (I assumed the home dir is in RAM) add the new sbin dir to $PATH (and here's the nasty bit) change the mount point of the floppy drive to /usr/sbin mount a floppy then run the script. *If* it works then it should be a case of adding /mnt/floppy/sbin to $PATH after a reboot and everything should work, yes? Rather than using a nice variable, in the install script every reference to /usr is hardcoded. I suppose a global search/replace would be a good option too... ta, BenE

Wires Only Broadband Suggestions

I'll be moving back to Norwich this weekend and one of the first things on my to-do list is broadband. So, I'm looking for recommendations on wires only packages - I'm not particularly bothered about static/dynamic IP's although price might be a factor in the decision. Meetings musings

Hi All Just been glancing through the archives as I don't get the mailings at the moment. 1. Great to see that the Norwich pub meetings are continuing to be announced - I knew I wasn't indispensable :-) I can't make the meeting this month or in August but hope to start attending from September, depending on work etc. 2. ALUG meetings in general: saw some discussion of this from a week or two ago. Seems to me that there are three types of meeting - social, technical, introductory. Social we have (in Norwich at least). Technical (i.e 'bring kit' meetings) do happen occasionally. Most of the discussion so far has been which of these two types of meeting to have and therefore the type of venue required. The feeling seems to be that the traditional 'technical support' meetings are less useful now than in the past. Certainly people don't seem to turn up to sunday meetings lugging boxes along as they did two or three years ago. Broadband in the home means that access to 'bandwidth' is less of an issue. Maybe all of these factors together is why there has not been great interest in using the Norwich Internet Cafe? Then there are 'introductory' meetings i.e. public events designed specifically to show Linux to interested people. These happen rarely if ever. Unfortunately they require the most work and commitment and may never happen but without them ALUG remains inward-looking, as has been hinted at by MJR. GNU/Linux is on the move into the mainstream on the desktop - it already is mainstream in the server world of course - but it may well be that ALUG is not going to be the group of people that is going to take that forward in our area. Given the amount of time/commitment/dedication etc required to set up and run linux support and training groups for novice users, perhaps it will need to be profit-making not voluntary. I do believe that there are a lot of business opportunities for this with possible massive growth in the next few years. Please cc any replies to me (easier to do than *not* to do on this list :-).
