Upgrading Ubuntu from 7.04 to 7.10

Hi Folks, We are currently running Ubuntu 7.04 without problems on all our PCs. I click on the little "update" icon now and again to keep our PCs up to date with bug fixes but have noticed for a while that an additional button has appeared in the UPDATE MANAGER Update screen saying that a new Distribution Release 7.10 is available. Next to this message appears a tempting little button which is marked UPGRADE. Bearing in mind that I do not currently have any means to back up the data on the PC how safe is it for me to click on the UPGRADE button? Normally when the Update Manager runs and presents me with a list of updates I simply click on the INSTALL UPDATES button and everything gets updated smoothly without problems but will a simple click on the UPGRADE button be sufficient to smoothly and effortlessly upgrade my system to 7.10 or will I be consigning myself to hours of frustration and hundreds of messages to the ALUG List trying to sort out the problems it may cause? Have any other ALUGers plucked up the courage to click on the Ubuntu 7.04 Upgrade Manager UPGRADE button? Was their upgrade as smooth and effortless as a normal update or did it turn into an Upgrade From Hell? To misquote Shakespeare: To upgrade or not to upgrade that is the question... Ny advice would be appreciated! Sagr.

Wireless networking

Does anyone have experience of Netgear Rangemax products? I was hoping to move my desktop into another room but that is beginning to seem unlikely. I originally had a Netgear WG602 which is a plain vanilla wireless access point and in my desktop I have an on-board wireless chip with an external aerial and I also have a D-Link AirPlus XtremeG PCI wireless card. Both receivers give similar performance with the WG602. That combination didn't give a good enough signal in the room that I want to use. My next step was to buy a Netgear WPN802 RangeMax wireless access point which is supposed to gve up to 10 times the range of a 'normal' WAP. A trial showed that it gave a signal which was slightly less good than the WG602 in conjuction with either of the two receivers. Someone suggested that I should use a RangeMax card to get the best effect so I bought a WPN311 RangeMax PCI card. That, together with the WPN802 RangeMax WAP gave results that were no different from the original setup. Surely Netgear can't get away with stating that that combination will give up to 10 times 'normal' if it does not improve performance at all? Wireless networking

I've installed three homeplug sets and 5 wirelesses. The three homeplugs were working within a minute of unpacking and plugging in. I got them from Solwise, and basically they stayed tthat way. Two of my own early plugs failed, one outside the guarantee period. This was the first one, and the only one that had any problems, but it was early days for homeplug. Solwise cheerfully replaced them by return mail, and on the second occasion when I told them they were outside guarantee, the answer was 'Oh don't worry about it'. Its super easy to tell what's happening with the Solwise: you either have three lights or you don't. And you just plug in a spare, assuming you have one. If it works, you know. Of the wireless ones, only one has been trouble free either to get working or more worrying, keep working. This one is with a Buffalo wireless router going into a Cable modem. The others had a variety of issues and were from several suppliers, and with Mac and PC both. Two worked perfectly, but later stopped working (and they are remote, so I don't know why). One gave all kinds of mysterious intermittent problems. One worked fine on a Mac, worked with a laptop, and then stopped working first on the laptop and then on the Mac. I asked the owner if he wanted me to come by, but he said he was fed up and bought some Solwise units which he did himself with no problems and wondered why he had not done that sooner. The latest wireless to go poof did so last week, after working fine for a year, and with no change of the connected computers. The problem is, some elderly lady is on the phone from a remote city, and its very hard to either get a coherent description of what's happening, or be sure that what you ask to have done is really happening. This is with wireless. On the other hand, look at the plug and tell me how many lights are on is very easy. So I now tell people: (1) get homeplug (2) get it from Solwise (3) you really want wireless, then -get the Buffalo - that is, get a separate access point not a wireless modem/router -get a man in. I don't do that anymore.... The netgear 5 port wired modem router has been fine. I've put in three or four of those. The great thing is it runs cool, it seems very reliable, and the user interface is easy for people to use. By contrast, the bargain wired router/modem from ebuyer works fine once its in, but heaven help the ordinary user who tries to set it up. Well, just my own experience. Peter

One downside to the powerline approach is the fact that it uses a (scarce) mains socket. I've just counted the plugs in sockets in my study - 14 in total - plus three lying unplugged temporarily. Mick

I've recently adopted a greyhound and joined a forum which for some reason doesn't like emails from a aol.com address. They are not sure why and i would be grateful if someone could explain. Printing Pdf files

Is there any software that would enable me, easily, to print a single pdf page over multiple A4 sheets? For example I have a pdf file which conists of one page but when printed on one A4 sheet makes it very difficult to read because the font is so small. It would be better to be able to print it on perhaps 2 A4 sheets if printed portrait or 3 A4 sheets if printed landscape. A friend has one, which he had got for his wife, and brought it over to me as he was having trouble with the wireless settings, so I played with it for a half hour or so. His problem, don't know whether its a usual one, is that he was having to enter the wireless pass phrase every time he started up in the default configuration. I showed him the graphical network tool which he had not found, and we changed the setting. There wasn't much guidance about how to set it. It feels solidly made. Your immediate impression is that its a quality item, not cheap feeling or looking at all. Comes in a small neoprene envelope which looks like it will be adequate protection. Bright very clear screen, though it is small. I would like to see the screen extend to the edges more. Maybe a later version will. Reasonably fast to start up and given the Ars review I was pleasantly surprised by how fast it loads OO. Perfectly usable. Keyboard is acceptable. Its not a thinkpad X series. You would not buy one to write your novel at every morning. But its usable, you can touch type on it, though maybe not very fast. Interface that it comes with, a customised version of Ice, is fine for end users. Its such a different kind of machine that people just accept that this is not really a PC, so they seem unsurprised that the interface is a bit different. It really is compact. I had an old portege. Its a lot smaller and lighter, about the size of and weight of a non-blockbuster hard cover novel. It won't fit in the average handbag, but it will certainly fit in the average slim briefcase or portfolio. Who its perfect for, well maybe someone who does systems admin would find it an alternative to a heavy laptop, but in terms of end users, its a perfect fit for someone who is mobile and wants mail, web, some writing, calendar, that sort of thing as they move around. I wouldn't get it for someone who is going to do any serious writing - the screen size and keyboard will become a strain after a half hour, and an X series or equivalent will be better. But for the kind of use described above, its hard to imagine anything better or more cost effective. It may find all sorts of business uses at this price for field crews. A lot of us will have some friend or family member who needs exactly this. Though be a bit careful if they are real writers. Peter

I am trying to dig into my rsync backup problems. It would appear that for some reason rsync is getting I/O errors when copying maildir files. A guy I know at Symantec told me that Dell (in common with other volume box shifters) receive a subsidy from the suppliers of products such as AV, firewalls, etc which they pre-install on the windows boxes. The logic here is that the punter will normally sign up to use the pre-installed "freebie" when the initial licence period expires. Thus the third party company (Symantec or whatever) gains market share while the box shifter gets a subsidy. There is not a mature enough "market" in such products in the Linux world so we end up with the anomalous situtation where a Linux installation actually costs the box shifter money - despite the cost of the MS install. Why is rsync forking copies of itself?

Good NAS boxes for Linux?

Does anyone hear use a NAS with their Linux system? I.e. some sort of Network Storage on their home/office network to provide backup disk space and other facilities? I have a Freecom NAS box with 500Gb in it which works OK'ish with Linux but I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has anything which works better. The main problem with the Freecom box is that its SMB implementation is rather old/limited and doesn't work particularly well with mount.cifs to mount the Freecom disk drive across the network. What I'd ideally like is a low powered computer on which I can run Linux. The Freecom NAS (and similar boxes) are Linux based systems but the software isn't easily accessible for updates/fixes etc. I could use an old PC but they consume much more power, the NAS boxes are often fanless and consume only 15 to 20 watts. -- Chris Green

Recommended DVD player?

Can any recommend a DVD player for Linux (Ubuntu, specifically)? The default one, Totem Movie Player, will play the DVD, but has no navigation at all other than the slider bar at the bottom, and that's a bit flaky at best. It also only works when a DVD is inserted; when starting from the Applications menu it complains of missing codecs. Or perhaps I've just missed something? TIA, Greg

Linux alternative to Outlook?

I'm wanting to use a Linux machine (just Ubuntu) for my "main" machine to handle my business calls and contacts. The trouble is, there doesn't seem to be a Linux alternative to Outlook - which I use for Calendar and Contacts at the mo. Evolution just seems to be a replacement for Outlook Express, not Outlook. Wiki spam problem

There's still a spam problem with the wiki - I just cleared out loads of mainly chinese spam pages. At least they don't appear to be editing our own pages (perhaps a fix was put in by someone earlier?) ... If anyone with admin rights wants to look into it, I wonder if we could configure MoinMoin in any of the following ways: a) restrict wiki to English only b) only accept modifications with an explanatory comment (most of the spam ones don't) c) only accept modifications from registered users and require all new accounts to be approved (guess most people who want an account already have one, so that should only be requests from new users. We can always put a note on the wiki asking them to post to the mailing list to get an account.). Just some thoughts ... Peter.

Broken clipboard

Dunno how but I've broken my clipboard! Any time I try to paste I get: ŸŸif (empty($job_rec->data['start'])) $job['start'] = date('Y-m-d'); The PHP code is something I did copy to the clipboard (don't know about the two leading chars though), but nothing I've copied since has "taken". Using glipper I can see the clipboard history, and if I copy something that's being added to the history just fine. It's only paste that doesn't work. I have had the problem once before and a reboot fixed it, but now that I'm not using Windows I don't see why I should have to reboot every few days! The two leading chars were the same last time, I think (upper case Y with umlaut). Only clue I can think of: I use Synergy (synergys.sf.net) to allow me to use one keyboard/mouse between two PCs, and amongst the things it does it copies the clipboard between machines. This machine is the Synergy server. (The other (client) machine is Win2k.) Recovering deleted files that a process still has open

I have a vmware-server installation running a virtual machine, however I have subsequently (and accidentally) deleted the .vmx configuration file. It appears that VMWare still has the file open, so it won't (as I understand it) be lost until VMWare is closed (eg I reboot the machine). Is there anything I can do to recover the file whilst in this state? How to display result of remote PHP script within a HTML page

Hi folks. A very dumb question from a HTML / PHP beginner... I have written a simple hit counter prog which I can access by running: http://www.suffolk-ancestor-genealogy-research.co.uk/counters/counter.php?w… I now want to integrate this into a HTML website page, so that this remote script "counter.php" is run and the result displayed on the HTML webpage each time the page is viewed. I have created a simple HTML page: http://www.suffolk-ancestor-genealogy-research.co.uk/counters/count_page.ht… which just consists of: <HTML> <BODY> <script src="http://www.suffolk-ancestor-genealogy-research.co.uk/counters/counter.php?w…"></script> </BODY> </HTML> When I go to this count_page.html webpage the hit counter is incremented but the result is not displayed on the webpage (even though it's output is visible when I run the script counter.php directly). Lyx - anyone use it?

ubuntu 7.04 I'd be grateful if someone could put me right on the following. I installed lyx through aptitude as i believe it takes more care with the dependencies. When i ran it i got the following - is this a bug? It actually seems to work OK - from what i've tried so far! Hi, probably a silly question with an utterly obvious answer, but it would be great if someone can enlighten on it! I'm searching and replacing a text file. In gedit, if I search for \n\r I get, as expected, a match at every line end. Same with \n or \r. However, in Kate or Geany, I do not. Tearing hair out. What could be the problem? I've tried \n [\n] I've tried building up the expression in the K regex builder. I've tried selecting the line feed character and doing copy and paste. In Gedit it yields \n\r. In Geany it yields a couple of small square boxes with dots in them, which I then can't search on. Changing the coding doesn't seem to help either. At least, the ones I have tried. Is this likely to be the explanation? It displays fine however, so how do I find out which different coding to use? I would just do it in Gedit, except that as usual in the effort to make their apps unusable for anyone who wants to use them for anything, Gnome decline to support regex..... Peter

Webcam as security monitor

Just found an old webcam at the back of a cupboard, plugged it in to my Ubuntu box, installed Camorama, and woot! it works. Which set me to wondering. Camorama can be to record a picture from the webcam every (say) 20 minutes. What I was wondering was is there is any software out there that records the picture at a set interval, but only if the webcam image changes (you'd presumably need some sort of change threshold, to cope with minor changes). Any thoughts, anyone? Greg

Time management software in Linux

What do folks use to manage their 'to do' lists and track time spent on various projects? Up until now I have used scraps of paper. But I just installed Gnome Time Tracker 2.2.2. ('gnotime') from the debian repository. This appears to provide all the essential functions, but is, alas, unusable. This is because the drag and drop editing of the project hierarchy behaves unpredictably. Are there any good usable open source alternatives? Thanks, David. Gnome configuration

Dear All, I decided to have a play with Gnome (usually an FVWM user.) I managed to get a nice user-friendly desktop by doing ln -s /home/username /home/username/Desktop/username and creating a .xsession file that said #!/usr/bin/tcsh /usr/bin/gnome-panel & /usr/bin/gnome-wm But when the session's finished with, hitting the "Log out" option in the system menu only seems to close the gnome-panel, not actually to end the X session. I suspect that this is because I'm starting gnome-panel the "wrong" way. Any ideas, please? -- Thanks, Dan Hatton

Multiple MySQl MySQL replication (on Debian/Ubuntu)

Has anyone here played with database replication using MySQL on Debian/Ubuntu? What I have is a database server running a few dozen databases, of which a handful I need to replicate at the customer's premises. That is, for sake of argument, 20 databases on the server, 5 of which need individually replicating to 5 customer offices. Last time I looked at this there were two options, described below for those who care. My problem is that both require me to run multiple database instances and every time I've tried to make MySQL do that from a Debian/Ubuntu binary installation I've failed. Does anyone here have any experience in that area? (I had no joy at all from the MySQL forums last time I went through this; the Debian builds seemed of little interest to MySQL devs.) ---- Option 1. Tell MySQL to create a binary log, with logging enabled on the 5 databases. Run 5 additional database instances using the blackhole database engine, which replicate one database each from the master binary log and use it to create their own logs. Set up MySQL at each customer site to replicate from their respective blackhole database instance. [Background: MySQL can (or could?) only log to a single binary file, so this messing around is required to split the logs out; each blackhole database instance receives the data for all 5 logged databases but ignores everything except that for its own database, which it then logs. The customer's server replicates against that. Otherwise the customer's server has to pull the data for all 5 databases to ignore 4 of them, a bandwidth hog and (more importantly) security flaw. The blackhole database engine simply dumps all data to /dev/null (ie it stores nothing) but in the process maintains the logs correctly.] Option 2. Remove the 5 databases in question from the main MySQL instance, and create new 5 MySQL instances (one for each database that needs logging). Let each separately create binary logs; client databases replicate from them as above. BT Home Hub, port forwarding

[This is not strictly Linux, but I guess it's the sort of thing a number of people on -list may have played with] I was playing with the port forwarding on my BTHH the other day, and noticed something odd. If I forward port 80 from the internet to my Linux box running Apache, when I visit whatever non-RIPE address the HH has at that time (from inside the NAT range), it still presents the HH admin interface, not the Apache files - i.e. the calls aren't being forwarded. Is there a way around this other than running on a port other than 80? Anyone know if it works from the internet proper (still waiting for my BT FON to be enabled)? TIA, Greg

Don't you just /love/ flame wars? (and my two penn'orth. None of the wrt applications could really be said to be suitable for newbies. Think about how they have to be acquired. Most ADSL users either use the router supplied by their provider, or (a smaller number) they will use a router bought at PC World. The kind of user who is prepared to install openwrt tends not to be at the newbie end of the spectrum). Mick

Please, please, anyone using a BT Home hub do yourself a big favour and stop right now. Go out and buy a decent router that BT don't control. I spent some long time earlier this year playing with the hub and everything that I found bothered me (and others with whom I corresponded). The is a crippled Thomson router which is locked to BT's network. They routinely update the software remotely without your agreement. You can lock it down to prevent this, but frankly why bother - just buy a decent router. I documented this at http://baldric.net/2007/01/22/bt-home-hub-and-the-gpl/. I have looked at the /usr/bin/run-parts script and I really can't see a reason why it should do this unless one of the scripts in /etc/cron.daily is doing something wierd and I have only added a very simple backup script there. Ubuntu questions

I've just installed an Ubuntu box on an old PC (could do with an extra 256MB, but hopefully that will be sorted later today; thanks, Matt :) ) It strikes me that, unless I'm missing something, it's not quite as user friendly as I was led to believe; o There's no obvious way to get out system information; Device Manager will tell me it's a PIII, but not the speed. System Monitor will at least tell me the installed RAM, but again not the CPU speed. o "Power management" is a bit of a grandiose name, given that all it will do is turn off the PC or the monitor. No disk spin-down times, fan speed controls, etc. o There are two package managers (Update Manager and Synaptic Package Manager). The former, at least, tells me when there are updates available. I don't know yet if it will include extra packages installed by the latter (e.g. Apache WWW Server). Why two in the first place? o Disappointed that something as basic as NTP isn't installed by default. Even (spit) Windows has had this since NT4. So, is Ubuntu not quite as ready for the mainstream as I thought, or have I missed something? Greg

Surge I don't know. I can tell which router is right for /me/ - I currently use a Thomson Speedtouch (780WL). I like the fact that it provides both a web based GUI (for speed and ease of routine config) and a decent CLI for more in depth configuration. Thomson have a good guide to the CLI on-line at http://www.thomson-broadband.co.uk/codepages/content3.asp?c=7&ProductID=528 The router runs a linux kernel and busybox and unlike the BTHH (which is based on the Thomson) it isn't crippled. I also like D-LINK kit for home use. But if you really want the full flexibility of a linux firewall, then I'd go for IPcop. You /will/ need a separate box, but it has a very small footprint and will run on some pretty ancient kit (try 486 with 86Meg of RAM). Alternatively, if you really want to get your hands dirty, go for openwrt (mentioned by Adam in a different post above). Mick >What I really do care about is the hardcore access to the device. Backup solutions for "not very linux" server destinations

I have just installed a 500Gb Network Server on my home network. It lives in the (very) detached garage so should be proof against even quite serious disasters to our house. However, although it runs a cut down Linux as its OS and thereby provides its services by Samba/CIFS it's not a very good or modern implementation and so it isn't easy to simply rsync files across to it. Using rsync (or the closely related rdiff-backup) results in lots of errors when the backup encounters symlinks, mixed case, etc. So I suspect I need a backup solution which packs up the files to be backed up into some sort of archive file and then just copies that file across to the server. Does anyone here use a backup solution of this sort and/or know any good ones? -- Chris Green

Secondary/Tertiary DNS to mirror hosted DNS (123-Reg)

Anyone with 123-Reg hosted domains will probably be aware that their DNS died over the weekend. This ought not be possible, given the redundancy, but for about 24hrs nobody with domains hosted with 123-Reg (well nobody who uses their DNS anyway) will have had web/email. That includes me and several of my clients :-( Therefore I want to set up a DNS server on my own hosted server to act as (probably) a tertiary server (maybe secondary, not sure it matters for the sake of this question). In an ideal world I'd have a server which was fully (automatically) synced with 123-Reg's servers for all the domains I'm interested in. Given that I don't have any control over 123-Reg's servers I'm not sure how close I can get to that. I've also never set up DNS from scratch before (I've used various hosted DNS options which don't require me to think), but I think this would be a good time to learn more about DNS configuration. ISP-relay SMTP question

Hi Folks, I'm hoping someone with the expertise can help me! In connection with trying to diagnose email delivery problems to a particular domain, I'd like to know the answer to the following. My email procedure is: 1. Compose the email "off-line" in my MUA (XFMail) 2. "Send" it -- so it goes in the outbox 3. Really send it (batch send) -- XFMail hands the outbox over to sendmail which then does SMTP with the mail server of my ISP (Zen). Up to this point, there is no problem; and receipt of a "check" Bcc: sent to me on an external email account via the ISP verifies that the ISP accepted the mail for delivery. And of course I usually have no problems with delivery of emails to their destinations by the ISP. Except for this one domain. Now the question. When my sendamil is doing its SMTP with Zen's mail server, the first substantive request it will make is mail from: <whatever.my.sendmail.uses> After the mail has been received by the ISP, the ISP's mail servers will try to initiate connections with the destination domain's mail server. Again, once a connnection is established, the first substantive request it will make will be of the form: mail from: <whatever.my.ISP.uses> My question is: What (if any) is the relationship between <whatever.my.sendmail.uses> and <whatever.my.ISP.uses> ?? Does <whatever.my.ISP.uses> take the email address from the "From:" header in the email? From the "envelope-from"? Or does it uses its own version, as in (e.g.): mailer-daemon(a)zen.co.uk Or what? One aspect of the background to this question is that, when I try myself to do a (test) manual SMTP dialogue with one of the remote domains mail servers, while I may well get through and successfully send the mail, on many other occasions I will get a response to "mail from:" on the lines of mail from: Ted.Harding(a)manchester.ac.uk 451 4.3.2 Please try again later which will be repeated indefinitely if I keep trying. So I'm wondering if it may be a negative response to the email address used in the "mail from:" request, or has some other reason. Since I don't know whether Zen's mail server would use the same (or similar) email address in its own "mail from:" request, I can't (as yet) link the delivery failures I get with my own SMTP dialogue with the delivery failures when Zen tries to forward my emails to the destination domain. Motherboard memory problem

I have just bought an extra 4Gb memory for my Abit AB9 Pro motherboard, I have plugged it in and it works fine (so I now have 6Gb) but I'm not convinced I understand the optimum way to install the memory. There are four memory slots numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4, they are laid out as two pairs, 1 and 2 close together and 3 and 4 close together. The manual is very ambiguous/confusing, it says:- To reach the optimum performance in dual-channel configurations, install identical DDR2 DIMM pairs for each channel. So does that mean a matched pair in both slots of channel A and a matched pair in both slots of channel B? That's not how the dealer had installed the existing memory and it isn't how their examples are either (see below). It's pretty definite that Channel A is slot 1 and slot 2, Channel B is slot 3 and slot 4, that at least is clear enough. However this is where it gets confusing, the sample layouts are for "Dual Channel Asymmetric" and "Dual Channel Symmetric", it doesn't say which is the best and they don't make a lot of sense. For example some "Dual Channel Asymmetric" layouts are:- Slot1 256Mb, Slot2 256Mb, Slot3 512Mb, Slot4 512Mb Slot1 256Mb, Slot2 256Mb, Slot3 256Mb, Slot4 512Mb Whereas a "Dual Channel Symmetric" examples are:- Slot1 512Mb, Slot2 empty, Slot3 512Mb, Slot4 empty Slot1 256Mb, Slot2 256Mb, Slot3 empty, Slot4 512Mb Slot1 256Mb, Slot2 512Mb, Slot3 256Mb, Slot4 512Mb Slots 1 and 3 are pink, slots 2 and 4 are red. I *suspect* that I have it right, as follows:- Slot1 1Gb, Slot2 2Gb, Slot3 1Gb, Slot4 2Gb (the dealer installed 1Gb were already in slots 1 and 3) but I'd really like to *know* that I have it right! -- Chris Green

I'm beginning to think this is impossible! :-) I've been doing some Google searching about the file local-host-names, one hit suggested trying the following to see what sendmail views as local domains:- echo '$=w' | sendmail -bt ... and what does it return .... ADDRESS TEST MODE (ruleset 3 NOT automatically invoked) Enter <ruleset> <address> > home home.isbd.net localhost [192.168.1.1] isbd.net Which certainly looks as if sendmail thinks that home.isbd.net is the local machine. However when I tried using 'mail' to send a message from root to chris(a)home.isbd.net (I used 'mail' to ensure little else was involved) it *still* tries to send it out to the outside world. How to send mail locally, solved but I don't really understand why

Well I finally found a way to send mail to local recipients, quite by chance really. I have a POP3 mailbox set up at Gradwell.net to allow me to send mail to 'myself' on my home machine (I read just about all of my mail on a remote machine at Gradwell) which comes in useful occasionally when I want to send a file to my home Linux box. This is set up in my isbd.net on Gradwell so it's home(a)isbd.net. I just occasionally run mutt locally on my desktop machine and collect mail from this POP3 mailbox. So, I realised that one way around my problem of sending mail to myself on the desktop machine would be to put home(a)isbd.net as the alias for root mail in /etc/aliases. Before doing this I tried sending mail to home(a)isbd.net from my desktop machine, it failed with "Error sending message, child exited 67 (User unknown.).", huh? I then realised that this meant that sendmail was trying to send this *locally* and there's no user called 'home' on this machine. Euraka!!! If I send mail to chris(a)isbd.net on my desktop machine it gets sent to the local user chris and *not* to the place where it would get sent if it was sent from anywhere else on the internet (chris(a)isbd.net is one of my 'real' E-Mail addresses). So, problem solved, I can put:- root: chris(a)isbd.net at the end of /etc/aliases and all the root mail will get to me locally. Quite *why* it's like this is anybody's guess! :-) -- Chris Green

How to get mail to local destinations delivered?

I have a fairly default Fedora 7 installation, certainly the sendmail is just as it was installed. How do I get sendmail to deliver mail to local destinations? The system's hostname is home.isbd.net and it's connected to the Internet via a router. I have a CNAME set up at the hosting provider that hosts isbd.net to point at the static address of my ADSL connection. When I send mail from my system to a local address it gets the hostname added, thus mail gets sent to root(a)home.isbd.net, postmaster(a)home.isbd.net, chris(a)home.isbd.net, etc. All of this fails because sendmail attempts to connect to the SMTP port of home.isbd.net, which isn't possible because my router's firewall doesn't accept connections on port 25. I don't want to open up port 25 and it seems a bit silly anyway to send mail on such a long round trip. Is there any way I can tell sendmail that home.isbd.net is localhost (or 192.168.1.1)? I have an entry for home.isbd.net in my /etc/hosts file which is:- 192.168.1.1 home home.isbd.net but obviously sendmail is doing a DNS lookup for home.isbd.net which returns the 'external' IP address. -- Chris Green

In a more-stupid-than-normal moment I ended up with a Text Edit document on my Mac with lots of capital I's in the middle of words. I tried 'check spelling' to see if it did an entire run of spell- checking through the document, but there was no dialog box. Tried to go through it in NeoOffice, which I'm not that familiar with, but NeoOffice bombed. Can somebody less brain-dead than I appear to be today come up with a bash script to pour the text into that does 'replace I not on word boundary with i'? (The infuriating thing is, I used to *know* this stuff, or at least where to look it up, but because I've been Abjuring Hackish Unixy Things since I was in mental hospital this summer, I don't even know where to start...) Also 'replace 'fI ind' with 'I find', because the reason I was messing about with I's in the first place was there's a timing error with my Alphasmart Neo keyboard and it has a tendency to transpose letters. Samba question/problem

I have Samba installed and working on my Fedora system, it mostly does what I expect but one entry doesn't. My smb.conf file has:- # global section default service = default encrypt passwords = yes null passwords = yes workgroup = IBMPEERS nt acl support = no [snip] # # # ISBD, user is set to isbd to allow read/write # [isbd] comment = ISBD force user = isbd path = /home/isbd guest ok = yes writable = yes By my reading of the smb.conf manual page that should allow anyone in to access /home/isbd, it should make them act as the user 'isbd' and it should give write access. (Remember this is a home intranet, two users, who both want access to the ISBD files) In practice when connecting from XP I always seem to have to enter a valid password to get access. In general what's the easiest way to make Samba shares appear in XP 'automagically' without having to enter passwords etc.? -- Chris Green

Python question about reading files

Are there any Python people here? How do I do the equivalent of the C below in Python :- while ( (str = read(file)) != NULL) { do something; } I can read the data OK, i.e. I have opened the file and I can successfully read from the file with the line:- tagNum = tlvFile.read(3) but I don't see how to make that part of a for/while loop that exits at the end of the file. I can't use an iterator because the file is read in variable length chunks whose length depends on context. -- Chris Green

BBC on amarok or whatever, how to?

I'm seeking (for someone else) to get streaming BBC to play over some Linux player, don't really care what, on 64bit Debian. Once more cursing the day I ever installed 64 rather than 32bit, and on more than one machine, but that's another story. Amarok, attempting to tune into (for example) mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio1/radio1_nb_e1s1 gives the response Error loading media, there is no available decoder. I set up amarok in accordance with these instructions: http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/gaming-games-multimedia-entertainment/7934… and presumably having got to the point of trying to play, probably did it right. Assuming this is because there is no win codecs, I went to medubuntu and got the 32 bit ones. This was a large weighty package. They will not install being 32bit. OK, went back and got the 64 bit amd64 ones. This was a suspiciously small file, and one's fears were realized when the package installed and the message was unchanged. I have also downloaded Real Player, and made it executable, but now what to do with it? It too of course is 32bit and presumably that is why it will do zip when you try to start it. There is no problem downloading the mp3 files for previously broadcast programmes, and they play just fine (rhythmbox seems to be an acceptable interface for this). But what I'm really being asked to provide is streaming BBC internet radio. Anyone done it? Peter

How do people here manage updates (or not)?

Now that I have been running Fedora 7 for a while I'm beginning to see its strengths and weaknesses. One area that worries me slightly is what seems to be the 'normal' way of keeping it up to date which is to run 'yum update all' (or an equivalent) automatically at regular intervals. Most of the time this works fairly smoothly but every so often there is a hiccough and you see as a result hundreds of messages in the Fedora mailing lists saying "it's broken". For me one of the major disadvantages of this approach is that when the kernel gets updated (which is quite frequently) I have to recompile both my Nvidia display drivers and Vmware. The Vmware recompile can be a bit difficult as Vmware is only guaranteed to build against certain kernel versions and you often have to use third-party patches to get it to compile with more recent kernels. So I don't update all the time now, at least not the kernel. I'm wondering if there is a 'happy medium' somewhere between Slackware which was very conservative and stable (only went to a 2.6 kernal just recently) and Fedora which seems a bit frantically on the bleeding edge. Is there a distribution which offers pretty close to latest versions of everything when it releases but then just maintains things with only security updates and such until the next release? General requirements are:- Not too "GUI and Windows oriented", Fedora is definitely as far as I'd want to go in this direction. A reasonably good package management utility, Fedora's yum makes life a lot easier than Slackware. I run FVWM2 as my window manager so any distribution that makes it difficult to do this is out! Must run Vmware fairly smoothly, I think most probably will, Slackware was slightly messy because of its different initialisation script structure. Vmware is important to me as I need MS Access to run our company's accounts. Running them via Vmware on my desktop is just *so* much nicer than running on a separate machine that I'll never go back. It's all well backed up and, if the Linux/Vmware goes completely pear shaped I could easily enough just put them on a dedicated machine so absolute reliability of Vmware isn't necessary. -- Chris Green

So long as all your hostfiles are in synch and your machines all look at local hosts files first (/etc/host.conf says "order hosts,bind") then they will all resolve "home.isbd.net" to 192.168.1.1. YUM: missing baseurl

I've just installed Fedora 6 and am having problems getting YUM and Software Updater to work properly. Boot question

My Fedora system has two (identical, but that doesn't matter) disk drives. Fedora is installed on /dev/sdb which uses LVM. Currently /dev/sda is partitioned the 'old fashioned' way. Now that I'm happy with the Fedora installation I want to tidy things up and use LVM for /dev/sda as well. Backing up and copying the data across is straightforward enough, I can cope with that. I have enough space that I can empty /dev/sda completely and partition it from scratch. However what worries me slightly is that there is presumably an MBR (that's what DOS used to call it) on /dev/sda which the BIOS goes to when the system is powered up. If I repartition /dev/sda will I lose this boot record? How does this get created in the Linux way of doing things? -- Chris Green

FWIW.(Maybe not much but anyway...) Yes, it would be helpful if the Ubuntu update dialogue box gave more information about what was being fixed (when there is something to fix.) Mildly ironic given how user friendly it is. For relative newbie like myself the tech speak is not helpful so unless it actually looks useful I don't install it. On the other hand, most of the time you don't have to faff about configuring anything as it does it for you, although there are exceptions. I have had to venture into apt (with assistance) to get a program I wanted installed. Compiling backages for Debian-based distros

I'm still trying to get my head around the correct way to configure a typical source tarball installation to fit into the Debian way of doing things. The best I've found so far is: ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc \ --sharedstatedir=/var --localstatedir=/var \ --libexecdir=/usr/lib Does all that look correct? The general idea is that if I want to try and build a replacement .deb for an existing package, using a more up to date source tarball, then I want all the files to end up in the same places as would have been the case for the original package. mount conundrum

Maybe I've got too involved in this and need to leave it for a while but I'll ask anyway..... A per the lvm thread I now have a whole new disk that has been lvm'ed. I think I probably want to move all my home directories and other such bits and pieces onto it. I.e. I will have one 'system' disk which has all the OS stuff on it and one 'data' disk which has home directories and anything else which is bascially data rather than programs (such as pictures, vmware guest images, etc.). So, how do I do it? If I create a /home directory on my root partition and then mount the new logical volume on /home it means that *everything* I create on that logical volume will appear as /home/<something>. That maybe alright for actual /home directories but doesn't make much sense for other stuff. Should I:- Split the new disk into more than one Logical Volume? Use lots of symbolic links? Stop drinking so much wine? I'm stopping now, doing things as root when I'm even slightly inebriated is probably not a good idea. :-) -- Chris Green

How to use pvcreate?

OK, so I have cleared everything off my /dev/sda (except, presumably, the MBR) and all is well still, Fedora still boots and my Windows guest virtual machine is still working. How do I now set up /dev/sda using LVM? As I understand it the sequence is to create a Physical Volume using pvcreate, then a Logical Group that uses the Physical Volumes I have created and then I create a logical volume in the Logical Group. The problem is that I don't understand how you tell pvcreate what disk it is to use. The 'synopsis' on the pvcreate man page says:- SYNOPSIS pvcreate [-d|--debug] [-f[f]|--force [--force]] [-y|--yes] [-h|--help] [-t|--test] [-v|--verbose] [--labelsector] [-M|--metadatatypetype] [--metadatacopies#copies] [--meta- datasizesize] [--restorefilefile] [--setphysicalvolumesizesize] [--version] [-Z|--zeroy/n] PhysicalVolume [PhysicalVolume...] Which doesn't seem to give much clue as to what disk it uses, PhysicalVolume is (as I understand it) the name that pvcreate gives to the chunk of disk you want to use, so what disk does it use? -- Chris Green

Some PDF printer jobs just hang (CUPS)

I have two printers on at home. both networked, an HP7310 which has its own network interface and an HP1320 which is networked via an old Axis print server. Most of the time they work fine with Word documents from Maxine's XP machine or my XP Vmware guest and documents from my Fedora box, etc., etc. However I'm having trouble printing some PDF documents, sometimes PDF prints OK and other times it just hangs leaving CUPS telling me that the job has been "Processing since ......". It even starts feeding paper on the HP7310, then stops. I *think* this may be on more complex printouts, e.g. when I have selected part of a PDF page to print but I'm not absolutely sure. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? -- Chris Green

Ok, this isn't directly Linux related but I know that there are some very knowledgeable people out there. I've got some CSS code I'm having trouble with. Apache access conundrum

I'm trying to restrict apache access to some areas of my home machine, so I have added the following sections to the httpd.conf file:- <Directory /var/www/html/chris> AllowOverride None Options None Order Deny,Allow Deny from all Allow from 192.168.1 193.128.168.194 AuthType Basic AuthName "ISBD Home Server" AuthUserFile /etc/httpd/conf/passwd Require valid-user Satisfy Any </Directory> <Directory /var/www/html/maxine> AllowOverride None Options None Order Deny,Allow Deny from all Allow from 192.168.1 193.128.168.194 AuthType Basic AuthName "ISBD Home Server" AuthUserFile /etc/httpd/conf/passwd Require valid-user Satisfy Any </Directory> The /var/www/html/maxine section works perfectly, I can access it without any hassle from home machines (192.168.1) and from work (193.128.168.194), plus if I access it from elsewhere I am asked for a password and, if entered correctly, I get access. However the /var/www/html/chris section doesn't work at all. From work I just get "You don't have permission to access /chris/ on this server." and from elsewhere I'm asked for a password but after entering the password I just get the 403 again. So what can possibly be the difference? The permissions down the tree from /home are the same for both. I'm stumped. Ah, *maybe* it's because it's looking for permission to view the directory at /var/www/html/chris, I'll check. -- Chris Green

Apache fell over

I'm running Apache 2.2.3 on Debian Etch. It generally runs happily and I haven't seen any issues since I upgraded the hosting several months ago, but at the weekend it died and I can't work out why. I have two things I was hoping people might be able to help with. /var/log/apache2/error.log includes: [Sun Oct 21 06:26:54 2007] [warn] child process 11300 still did not exit, sending a SIGTERM [Sun Oct 21 06:26:56 2007] [warn] child process 11300 still did not exit, sending a SIGTERM [Sun Oct 21 06:26:58 2007] [warn] child process 11300 still did not exit, sending a SIGTERM [Sun Oct 21 06:27:00 2007] [error] child process 11300 still did not exit, sending a SIGKILL [Sun Oct 21 06:27:01 2007] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down The last row before that was from a week before, and shouldn't be part of the same incident. 6am is definitely not a peak time for this box. I couldn't find anything in any other logs that seemed relevant. Anyone got any idea what that was, or where I can look for more detail? Secondly, I really ought to have some mechanism to check on Apache (and MySQL) periodically and make sure they're running, either restarting them or alerting me (although I can be difficult to get hold of). What do people recommend for this? Is it as simple as having cron run a script to start the daemon if it's not already on the stored PID, or are there issues I should be wary of? Thanks, Matthew

Email from cron scripts

I have the following in my crontab: */5 * * * * /path/to/script.sh | mail -es "mail subject" me(a)example.com What "script.sh" does is check whether the mail server is running correctly. If it is, then it sends a message to stdout and exits. If it is not, then it sends a different message to stdout, then restarts the mail server, then exits. If the mail server is OK, the output to stdout is captured and emailed via cron correctly. If the mail server is not OK, it is successfully restarted but the mail does not get sent. In fact, the script never exits: $ps ax [..snip..] 28907 ? S 0:00 /USR/SBIN/CRON 28908 ? Ss 0:00 /bin/sh -c /path/to/script.sh | mail -es "mail subject" me(a)example.com 28912 ? S 0:00 mail -es mail subject me(a)example.com 28941 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/sendmail -i -FCronDaemon -oem root [..snip..] Clearly "mail" or "sendmail" (in my case the Postfix version) doesn't like the mail server being restarted under its feet like this. How can I get around this? I'd like to capture all the output from script.sh (including the output from the mail server restart) if I can. If it's relevant, in this case restarting the mail server means stopping (in this order) postfix, clamav and dspam, then starting them again in reverse order. Can one have different versions of the same plugin in Firefox?

Is it possible somehow to install more than one version of the same plugin in Firefox? I need a very specific old[ish] version of the Java plugin to run an Oracle applet, can I install this version *and* the latest version? N.B. the applet *doesn't* work with the latest version of the Java plugin, it looks for jpi-version=1.4.2_16 specifically before it will even try and start. OK, this is stupid but I can't do anything about it. -- Chris Green

Hi Rich, Thanks for that it will be really useful. I'm going to download Scribus and play with it awhile before I show it to the people who will be expected to use it. I'll also talk them through the process of changing files into pdfs and see how that goes, hopefully they don't have too many things that need converting, I think they work on a more ad hoc basis. SSH connections dying

For a while I've been having a problem with some SSH connections to remote servers (OpenSSH client from Gnome terminal on Ubuntu desktop to OpenSSH server on remote server). Connection is fine, but at some point during data transfer the connection will die. It's always (as far as I can tell) during transfer of date from server to client, eg I'll do "ls" and get half a directory listing, then nothing. The connection doesn't close (it becomes unresponsive and I have to kill the terminal). Until now this has been annoying but not a show stopper; it happens fairly rarely. However, this weekend I'm at a LAN event talking to the server over a shared 3G connection (my PC -> IPCop -> Windows laptop with 3G modem and Windows Connection Sharing*) and the same symptoms are occurring, just far more frequently. All of which I think might give a clue as to what's wrong, but I can't work it out. Any clues? How to tell what extensions are installed without running Firefox?

This may seem to be a silly question, but...... I want to remember the name of an addon/extension I have installed on my home Firefox. I have ssh access to my home system. So, how can I tell what extensions are installed, I can't see any obvious clues in the $HOME/.mozilla/default hierarchy. It's not a sensible answer to run Firefox remotely, it'll take all morning to even start up across the internet connection from here to home. -- Chris Green

Boyfriend says XSLT is just what I want, and I find it abstruse and impossible) Discover Linux by Steve Oualline The Complete Unix (incl Linux, Solaris, HP-UX) Unix Hints and Hacks (Que; haven't used this much) Beginning XSLT by Jeni Tennison (Good, but failed to learn XSLT from it, quite long) Micromania by Dave Langford (very short and jokey about 8-bit computers and hackers; will make you laugh if you remember those days; I do, just). Javascript, by Danny Goodman (absolutely enormous; failed to learn Javascript even with Dashcode to make it easy). These things can go in the ALUG library, and if I feel brave in a few years' time I'll prise open one of the covers... If anyone wants this doubtful heap, they can come over and pick it up, as I don't drive. I'm keeping the Applescript books (tight integration with Mac apps, and easy words) and the Fish Book (bash is good for really simple things), and determined not to go near anything that will scare me for a while. How to set font size in a java applet (in Firefox)?

Does anyone know how the font size is set in java applets? I run an Oracle forms java applet in Firefox at work and something has changed the font size so that it's too large. Column headings overlap each other and text in boxes is a total mess. It certainly *used* to work and I can't think of anything I have changed that would affect it but obviously something has. Changing the font sizes in Firefox's 'Preferences' has no effect at all. -- Chris Green

OpenDocument Foundation ODF da Vinci plugin ended

Hi, For the open source activists on the list. We had a bit of a discussion on the use of ODF vs. MSOOXML in a corporate environment at the last Ipswich meet (more specifically, my ability to invoke a flame fest on the topic at work, without trying). I'm rather glad I didn't get too deeply involved in the debate - because I'm convinced now I'd've probably been on the losing side. ;) I'm not sure how widely it's been picked up, but I noticed yesterday that the OpenDocument Foundation's site [http://opendocument.foundation.googlepages.com/] has had a small note quietly appended. 'Note: All work on ODF da Vinci has ended. Without OASIS approval of our five generic eXtensions, known as the iX enhancements, we can not effectively convert existing Microsoft documents, applications and processes to ODF. The loss of fidelity and feature — business process specific information is too great. We are however able to make full, high fidelity "round trip" conversions to the W3C's CDF — meeting critical market requirements. If at some point in the future, the OASIS ODF TC does approve both our ODF iX enhancements, and, our "Universal Interoperability Framework Proposal", we will configure da Vinci to support both CDF and ODF iX.' Given this was the only MS Office plugin that was claimed would eventually provide a 100% perfect 'round trip' conversion fidelity, this sounds like a blow for ODF interoperability with MS Office and I think we're going to have to continue along in the era of document conversions mostly working, except for those tricky bits (i.e. anything involving tables or diagrams!). It's a shame - I'm big on promoting open standards but if the Massachusetts result didn't spell the end to ODF's challenge to MS Office, practically I think this might ... Peter.

Using VPN to provide static IP

I have an application which needs to authenticate via an online server, and it must use a static IP to do it. I need to do it via a mobile connecting through a 3G connection, so static IP is out. The only way I can see to do this is to create a VPN (eg using OpenVPN) and connect the laptop to that, then make the connection through that. Since I'm not entirely sure how to do this, before I waste time trying it, can anyone give me a sanity check that this is the right approach? Gnome terminal, can't display Help

In Fedora 7 when I click on 'Help' in the gnome-terminal menu I now get a message saying:- There was an error displaying help: There was an error launching the default action command associated with this location. It used to work so what have I screwed up? FWIW I wanted Help because the URL launching action isn't working either, I suspect this could well be the same or similar issue. It's a pity there isn't an ordinary man page for gnome-terminal, less likely to get lost. -- Chris Green

Mixer/sound driver volume levels and distortion

Hi all, I have onboard AC97 sound, according to kmix my system automatically set itself up with the 'VIA 8237' driver, which is probably right. I have a good old analog connection to an amplifier. If I set master and PCM to 100% the volume is at a good level but is very distorted. If I move both down 'a bit' then the distortion goes away but it's all a bit unscientific as to how much that 'bit' is. If I leave PCM at 100% and move Master about it gets quieter but is always distorted. In Windows on the same hardware, setting all mixers to 100% seems to output a good, loud, non distorted sound, I'd guess at the 'line level' that my amp is expecting. Is there a setting somewhere in the (ALSA) driver to set the maximum output to 'line level' so I can set kmix at 100% and get good volume and no distortion? There is an 'External amplifier' switch in kmix but it appears to have no effect. I've had a good root around on Google and the answer appears to be 'turn the mixer volumes down a bit' - e.g.: http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/TroubleShooting#Sound_can_be_heard_but_it… There must be something more accurate? If the Windows drivers have some built-in setting can it be replicated? Cheers Neil

Viewing XML files

I have some relatively large* XML files (about 3MB) which I need to work with (view certainly, edit would be nice). They're not formatted - there are no line breaks in the files - which means most of the editors I've tried to open them with have struggled, and FireFox took about half an hour to open one of them. What are good (preferably GUI) tools for this kind of thing? I'm on Ubuntu some Gnome-biased is great, but to be honest anything that does the job is great enough. The application which creates them can comfortably handle a valid reformatted file, so if the lack of formatting is lost on a save that's not an issue. I don't really want to have to preprocess the files to tidy them before opening, though, as the files change frequently. Any good tools for generating HTML tables out there?

I'm using reStructuredText extensively for writing notes etc. that I can use both as written and by generating HTML from the .rst files so they can be viewed in a browser. However the table generation syntax in reStructuredText is a bit clumsy, 'simple tables' are OK but don't have row spans and I really want row spans, 'grid tables' can do anything but take a huge amount of effort to type. So, I'm after some simple way of generating HTML tables, preferably from some sort of text 'source' file that is itself reasonably readable. Has anyone here got any suggestions for anything like this? -- Chris Green

How to mount a CIFS file system as a user?

I want a simple way to mount a CIFS file system that I can run as a user. There seems to be considerable confusion between the mount man page and the mount.cifs man page as to what can be done and what can't be done. According to the mount man page I can add a line to /etc/fstab as follows (or something like, the syntax may well be wrong) :- //192.168.1.10/C /home/chris/xp cifs noauto,user 0 0 The 'user' option is supposed to allow a user to mount the file system. However if I say "mount /home/chris/xp" I get:- mount error 1 = Operation not permitted Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) Referring to the mount.cifs(8) manual page as requested is not very enlightening! Running "mount /home/chris/xp" as root works (I have to admit I only just tried) so the entry in /etc/fstab must be about right. -- Chris Green

usb printer not recognised

Hullo there, I've stuck an HP LaserJet 1018 onto a debian stable box. Printer only has usb connection. However, hp-probe says there are no devices found, and lsusb agrees with this. Other usb devices work on this computer, and the printer works on a different (ubuntu) computer. The cups web interface detected a new printer, saying it was on "hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1018?serial=KP110YP". Printing a test page just gives the syslog error "knossos kernel: usb 1-2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd hpiod rqt 161 rq 1 len 1 ret -110 Oct 17 11:36:10 knossos hpiod: invalid Device::DeviceStatus: Connection timed out hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1018?serial=KP110YP io/hpiod/device.cpp 818 Oct 17 11:36:10 knossos hpiod: unable to read Device::GetDeviceStatus: Connection timed out hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1018?serial=KP110YP io/hpiod/device.cpp 1081" Have I missed out some modules to install, perchance? Webcam, what software?

This seems very stupid but I can't really work out what Linux software can do useful things with a Webcam. The obvious thing to want to do is to show what the webcam is seeing on the web. I have apache 2.2 running. Also, any good voip type applications that have both Linux and Windows versions anc can use a webcam for video phonecalls? I run Postfix on Debian Testing and I originally set outgoing mail in my mailer (Balsa) to be SMTP localhost:25. I have the choice of sending external mail either through my ISP's mail server or my web site hoster's mail server. In my Postfix main.cf I had relayhost = (one of two mail servers) Before I changed ISPs recently I used to send my external mail through my ISP (unauthenticated) but then I changed to my web site hoster's mail server and mail was going out through them (also unauthenticated). When I changed ISPs recently I found that I could no longer send through my web site hoster's mail server and they say that's because it requires authentication. I don't know why it should have worked with my old ISP and the people who host my web site haven't offered any explanation. So I'm trying, and failing dismally, to use SASL for SMTP authentication. I followed these instructions http://linuxgazette.net/142/pfeiffer.html However if I now try sending mail with SASL set up authentication fails on whichever external mail server I use but I don't know why or how to find out why it's failing.
