Xorg.conf or nVidia problem

Hi all I'b be grateful for help with the following problem When my new install of Ubuntu 8.04 boots the screen changes resolution instead of sticking with the 1152x768 I'd like it to. I'm using the GeForce4 MX 4000 & a single monitor ADI GD-790. The Splash screen appears normally but the Nvidia logo & log-in screens appears magnified - what should be only the upper left corner covers the whole screen! New computer.

Well last week my hard disk gave up the ghost. This is the first disk I've had that has actually died, the other two just started to produce loads of bad sectors and the SMART monitor gave me warning. But there was nothing with this drive, lucky I just backup most of the important stuff. Anyway enough of my rambling. I could just buy a new hard disk and get every thing up and running, but I just might use this as an excus to update my computer (It's 6-7 years old), and get something more up-to-date and hopefully more efficient. Finally my question. Has anyone got any experiance of the EffcientPC.co.uk guys? I was looking at the Flexible range that they do, and was wondering if I should go with the Camulus or Isis systems. The only difference is one is Intel/nVidia and the other is AMD/ATI (respectively) any thoughts? And finaly has AMD open sourced the ATI graphics drivers yet? I am right in thinking that they committed to that when the bought ATI, am I not? Anyway thanks for any thoughts. Torb -- You've got a lot of choices in your life. How to get USB mass storage devices to mount/unmount automatically?

I've been faffing around for a while trying to work out how to do this, without much success. Part of the trouble is that looking for USB and automount on Google comes up with lots of stuff about automount and that's a different beast altogether. I have fathomed out that it's something to do with HAL and udev. If I need to go and edit new entries into /etc/udev/rules.d then so be it but I suspect there's simpler, higher level ways of doing it. What I want is to be able to plug in my USB Mass Storage camera and get to see the pictures without any further hassle. At the moment I have to do a manual mount command (and in addition I regularly forget to umount it). I'm sure modern Linux systems should be able to automate this but I can't find out how at the moment. Can anyone point me at a good tutorial or tell me what I need to do? ..., Fedora 8, kernel 2.6.24 -- Chris Green

SSH - something I don't understand.

My SSH is set up to work via a key only i.e. no logins. I can use SSH from my laptop to connect to my desktop over my home network with no problems however if I try it via the Internet, when away from home, I get 'access denied (Publickey)'. I have only just realised that the last two posts I had intended for the list were actually sent to Brett Parker by mistake. I wondered why they didn't appear in the list. :-)) The problem is now solved. There was a 'Host' section in the /etc/ssh/ ssh_config file on the laptop which started 'Host desktophostname' and changing that to 'Host desktophostname 192.168.0.1 123.234.345.456' cured the problem. 123.234.345.456 would be the IP address I use to connect, via the Internet, to my desktop at home when I'm away. I discovered that because if I changed the SSH command to use an IP address, even from my home network, instead of a host name I had the same problem. Brett suggested looking in the ssh_config file 'Host' section. Thanks to MJR, Wayne, Adrian, Dan and others who offered advice. We have now finished rebuilding my friend’s server and now the dust has settled and the anger and frustration has died down we have to admit it has not been a totally bad experience. It provided us with a good excuse, and opportunity, to reinstall everything from the ground up and made us realise what an enormous collection of no-longer-used scripts he had collected on his old machine; they were very handy at the time he installed them but he had forgotten to remove them once the need had passed. I guess it has taught us, through experience, that just because my friend updated his operating system nightly we should not assume that EVERYTHING is updated and safe as old, no longer unused, no longer supported, scripts installed for a particular one-off task and then forgotten about can easily be overlooked but become an easy target for hackers. I have a separate question about our experience but I had better start a new thread for that. Thanks to all for your wise advice, Sagr.

What to do after being hacked?

A friend of mine recently had a visit from "The Audisoft Hacker Team of Chilean Defacers" who, apart from replacing his website with graffiti, placed a c99shell backdoor in an obscure directory. His visitors were kind enough to display their hacker alias names on the graffiti and, looking at log files, we have discovered the time the attack occurred and the IP Address from which it came also, after having a poke around his backup files, think we know the application they hacked to gain entry. So what do we do now? I suppose theoretically he should report it to some authority but neither of us knows to whom, nor do we suspect they would show the slightest interest even if we did. The backdoor has been placed in an obscure location which would only be known by the original hackers and associates they have told. It would be impossible to guess or stumble upon accidentally. We are therefore confident that anyone who visits this backdoor has illegal intentions. So what would ALUGers suggest we do? Being in mind anyone who tries to accesses the backdoor has illegal intentions, and from log files we notice most are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, we have had all kinds of evil thoughts about replacing the backdoor with some kind of infected software... but this would bring us down to their level and possibly also be illegal. It would however be interesting to replace the backdoor webpage with some software which is capable of more detailed logging of visitors. What would more experienced ALUGers do if they were in our situation? Is there any specific piece of logging (or other) software ALUGers would suggest we replace the backdoor with as it is still receiving visitors? Sagr. PS: The application the hackers used to gain entry was an old piece of software he had forgotten was still on his website and so we haven't bothered to put it back on.

Nokia N810 - any experience?

I'm looking for some sort of GPS/PDA set up for logging walking/cycling and to provide directions for when I'm riding my motorbike. One suggestion is the Nokia 810 which is Linux based so that's an extra plus. Does anyone here have any experience of this device? For a start how big is it, I can't see this information in any of the adverts. -- Chris Green

How to automatically check for changes to a website

As ALUGers may be aware; a friend of mine recently had his website defaced by hackers. This has made me realise how seldomly I, myself, actually check my own website to see if it is still as it should be. Bearing in mind my own website is quite static, only being updated once a month or so, checking it would seem an ideal task for automation. I would guess I am not the only person on the planet who doesn’t have time to regularly check their website for defacement and was wondering if any experienced ALUGers could recommend a ready made script which I could run on my home server which would enable me to compare my live website (on a remote commercial webhost) with a stored image of it (on my local server) a couple of times a day. Do other ALUGers bother to check their own websites for defacement regularly? If so what tools do you use? Sagr.

IPTables and Me - they don't mix.

My setup: Debian Testing (up to date) Kernel 2.6.24 My router has a firewall with the SSH port open. I run a FireStarter software firewall, which blocks SSH access, on my computer together with Knockd. Knockd runs a script which adds or deletes an IPTables rule to allow SSH access. The knockd script part works insamuch as it adds the required rule. The problem is that the firewall on my computer still blocks SSH access. This is so that I can access my computer when away from home and that's the only time I can test or try it consequently it's all rather long winded. SSH access is by key only and login is prohibited. First I added a rule to allow SSH access using the FireStarter GUI interface then I had a look at an IPTables listing to see what it had generated. I used that rule in my knockd script. The next time I went away I found that it didn't work - I still couldn't get access. The last rule I tried I had modified myself after reading the man pages and that didn't work either. So I'm now stumped. This is my last effort: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22:22 -m state --state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 22:22 -m state --state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT I don't know whether the UDP rule is required but I thought it wouldn't do any harm. Mobile Linux, more thoughts and questions

<UNLURK> I've got an Asus EEEPC (701) which I use with a 3G Mobile Broadband USB dongle (HUAWEI E220). I just used the add network wizard and followed the prompts and voila! it was setup. Works quite well (even on the train - Useful when stuck on Norwich to London line!). I have had minor problems with random disconnects but I suspect that this is to do with mobile coverage and contention. Works well enough for casual web-browsing and e-mail (which is what I use it for). Suspect may not be up for beefier things like iplayer etc. :-) Hope that this is helpful, Mark </UNLURK>

Having looked at the Nokia N810 (reviews etc.) I've decided it probably doesn't offer the mix I really want. In particular it lacks phone capability (i..e. it has no SIM) so I'd need to carry a phone as well as the N810 which seems a bit silly. So I'm still kicking ideas around, I'm after GPS ability (for logging and for motorbike), a mobile phone and mobile computing which, for me, essentially boils down to being able to make an ssh connection through the mobile phone data connection. A browser for Googling would be nice but is less essential. I think this probably looks like several devices with a mobile phone and a data connection at the centre. Does anyone here use a mobile phone data connection with an Asus EEEPC, is it easy to set up and usable? If it was then it gives me a much nice keyboard for ssh than any keyboard on a smartphone or whatever. Alternatively a smartphone (like a Treo 680) with ssh installed would work too, much more difficult keyboard but more portable. Any other ideas, comments, etc. regarding getting a "terminal on a mobile phone" that's usable, portable and cheap? Once I've decided the neatest solution to the above I can add a GPS logger easily enough and I suspec the motorbike GPS navigation just ends up as a separate device. -- Chris Green

What about the iPhone? Dear All, The dhcp-options manpage says `NOTE to Fedora dhclient users: dhclient-script interprets trailing 0 octets of the target as indi- cating the subnet class of the route, so for the following static- routes value: option static-routes 172.0.0.0 172.16.2.254, 192.168.0.0 192.168.2.254; dhclient-script will create routes: 172/8 via 172.16.2.254 dev $interface 192.168/16 via 192.168.2.254 dev $interface' If I suspect that I'm getting a messed up routing table (i.e. not what the DHCP server administrator intended) as a result of this, what should I do to diagnose and/or fix it? -- Thanks, Dan

EeePC battery runs down ...

Hi Folks, Knowing there are a few Eee PC owners out there, I'd like to compare notes on the following. I have a standard Eee PC 900 (Linux) with the standard ASUS battery. I've observed that if the machine is "powered off" (via the GUI: logoff -> shutdown) when the battery is fully charged, a few days later the battery may be substantially discharged (e.g. currently at 20%, on a previous occasion dead flat). Might this be due to slow internal leakage in the battery? Might the computer in fact be quietly ticking over in the background even though nominally "shut down"? Would a different battery make a difference? Just a few questions -- I'd be interested in what others think. CSS question, just a bug/quirk or what?

I wanted tables with no borders at all, after mucking around for a while with the CSS I found that:- table.docutils, td, th { border: 0 } works, but that:- table.docutils td th { border: 0 } doesn't work. According to CSS documentation those commas are wrong but they've made it work for me. Is this just a quirk of Firefox (2.0.0.12 on Linux) or am I missing something (quite likely!)? -- Chris Green

ASUS Eee PC battery replacement?

Hi Folks, Some weeks ago I bought the ASUS Eee PC 900 (Linux). Dinky little job, and works nicely. Apparently, ASUS decided to provide more beefed-up replacement batteries for the somewhat feeble one it comes with, as from June. However, I can find no trace of the actual availability of the new batteries. Even a visit to the ASUS UK website, and searching for "battery", only resulted in a long delay and then a message that their website was undergoing maintenance ... ! Does anyone have info about this replacement and, if it really exists, how it can be obtained? Ubuntu Updates

I have a customer with a laptop from Linuxemporium, with ubuntu pre-installed. I think it is gutsy, but will have to confirm that. She is using a wireless network (WPA-PSK), with broadband connection. The problem is with online updates. When logged in, a message informing of new updates is shown. If accepted, the list of headers downloads correctly. But, on clicking install, nothing happens. If I try running apt-get update / upgrade, update works fine, but upgrade reports that resource [ESSID xxxx} could not be accessed. However, if I run apt-get from an SSH login, or a virtual terminal, everything work fine. Program which can print a part of an image - any ideas?

I want to be able to select part of an image (a JPEG by default but I could convert it) and print a selected (by marquee?) part of the image. At the moment I can't find any easy way to do this either with Windows programs (I have Adobe Photoshop Elements running in Vmware) or in Linux. Hello list people, I thought I'd throw this one over to you for some feedback. I have to set up a vpn both locations are using Netgear DG834g routers. The main location has a Ubuntu Hardy box being used as a samber server for a small handful of Win XP/Vista and Ubuntu boxen. There is a XP box used as a print server (I know cups would be better but it's a location thing). Basically they need file shares across a vpn with printing handled locally at each location. What is the best way of attacking this, the hardware route using routers or using tunneling protocols? Cheers, BigJohn

Debian apt dependencies

Can anyone tell me why debian apt-get insists on installing apache when I only want to install php5 and php5-cgi (I already have lighttpd installed and prefer to use that)? To be honest that behaviour is more down to your mail client than the list, and looking at your headers you aren't using a mail client but google's webmail interface. A lot of mail clients have a reply to list button that reads the header in the mail from the list which announces it as a list and provides the correct reply address, others allow you to set a default reply address for a folder and then have a rule drop the alug mails into this folder. Unfortunately I think most webmail (inc google) lacks this functionality. The reason it is done this way is to preserve the reply-to header rather than rewriting it, this is considered the "correct" behaviour but unfortunately not all mail clients support it. Hence things like yahoo groups do it the "technically wrong" way and rewrite the reply-to header to be the list address. It has been a matter of debate on the list several times and comes up for discussion once in a while. But the general consensus each time is to leave it the correct way and deal with it at the client end.

MP3 players+Ubuntu

Plugging in a generic MP3 player, I see that 8.04 no longer treats it as a USB drive and says it can't play what's on there without searching for codecs etc. Given that it's all in MP3 format this must be nonsense. It was more helpful when it viewed it as a USB drive so is there a way of changing this? Thanks. Cheap HP server OS free

Following on from a recent(ish) discussion about these. Ebuyer now have the cheap HP Dual Core Opteron servers back in stock, now at £97.86 +VAT but including a 3 year next business day warranty package. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146548 Ram is a bit lacking at 512MB but it is cheap to add more They are linux certified by HP for some flavours of Suse and Redhat so linux friendliness shouldn't be an issue and although the built in Graphics is a bit wanting they do have a full length PCI-E x16 slot to add something better so you could convert them into a reasonable desktop. The only negative thing I have to say is that the particular chip they use is (as Adam Bower has pointed out previously) known to be a bit of a watt muncher so expect a reasonable tag on your electricity bill if you use them as a home server powered 24/7. Probably an idle of something in the region of 200Watts or maybe slightly less.

I upgraded to Hardy Heron a few days ago and have two puzzles. One is that twice now I've had Network Manager error messages when I shut down, though I've changed none of the settings Bev. I was getting this on one of my machines after upgrade. The simple solution is to edit /etc/init.d/halt and /etc/init.d/reboot to remove the -i option i.e. in /etc/init.d/halt change: halt -d -f -i $poweroff $hddown to # halt -d -f -i $poweroff $hddown halt -d -f $poweroff $hddown and in /etc/init.d/reboot reboot -d -f -i to # reboot -d -f -i reboot -d -f (old lines left and commented out so that I know what I've done.) The man page states that "-i iterates configured network interfaces and brings them down before shutting down. On Linux, this is unnecessary as the kernel will do this anyway." Hi, etqw last night was a pretty good success, 4 of us played hopefully we are going to do it again very soon. If you are interested then post here or find either quinophex, DrJeep or DralaFi on irc and we'll try to thrash out a time/date although we will probably have ad-hoc games during the week so asking on irc if we are playing might also be sensible. Just from a personal perspective given I'd not played quake wars until last night if we do get some more people interested who have not played before, perhaps we shouldn't go on a ranked server first and find a quiet server with some bots so it is a bit slower paced? I found the ranked game was far to frantic given I wasn't really sure what I was doing but as soon as we went up against some bots and had a bit more breathing space it became lots easier as I managed to work out how to actually complete missions. I've just found that the preferences menu has the option to make the Courier font bold and it's much better. The error messages go by pretty fast (it's the last thing I see before it shuts down completely) but it starts off by announcing that it's starting various processes. If I can write down what it says I'll post it. The first (and if nobody turns up, last) **Official Enemy Territory:Quake Wars ALUG game night** Play for the first night will be on a public ranked server, if it goes well then we can consider hosting a server, forming a clan etc but this game needs at least 4 players a side before it gets interesting so I want to get an idea of numbers first before we commit to that. First game on the 22nd of July at 8PM, meet on #alug (IRC) at 7:30 to find out what server we are on. Second game at 10PM, meet on IRC at 9:30. Alternatively friend drjeep and or dralafi within the game before 6PM and use the follow feature to find us. For those that don't know ET:QW is a fps with strong team play elements, a linux client is available but unfortunately this is a commercial game. (all be it currently available for £7 or less delivered)

Picasa 2 for Linux

Not that i'm into digital photography in a big way but a number of people recommended me to try Picasa without knowing that i use Ubuntu. Looking at the google pages i discovered that they do a Linux version. I was going to try the windows version on wine before discovering that they had a linux version. http://picasa.google.com/linux/learn_more.html http://picasa.google.com/linux/faq.html#23 Reading the two links i was interested to read the following sentence. "Wine runs on top of the X Window System and Linux or Unix. But it's not a Windows emulator; instead, it provides a Windows API middleware layer that enables Windows programs to run on Linux without the slowing effects of OS emulation or a virtual machine." Having tried to learn about wine and virtual machines i've now found a sort of combination. One downloads version 2.7 .deb and then part of it is also running in Wine. This 'middleware layer' is perhaps something new and if anyone knows perhaps they could explain... maybe of interest to photographers amongst us! thx james

Scripted editing of PDF files

Does anyone have any idea how to perform command-line PDF editing? The sort of thing I am talking about is adding text to the document maybe even editing existing text if that's possible. (The PDF will be a poster for printing, I need to change some details and return it. The quality of the PDF is therefore important and converting (say) to JPEG, adding the content, then converting back, will probably not give adequate results (unless someone knows better?) For test purposes I have tried things like: convert test.pdf test.png convert test.png test2.pdf .. and the quality difference between test.pdf and test2.pdf is noticable (colour definition has reduced, and the image has become grainy). In fact, even: convert test.pdf test2.pdf .. gives almost identical results to the via-jpeg test, which makes me think something like that is happening anyway. Comparison of CPU speeds

Hi Folks, Sorry for any cross-posting which may affect any of you! I've been asked the following, but don't know the technicalities to provide an answer myself. Given that a certain simulation job (10,000 rounds) takes 6-8 hours on an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.59GHz machine, what might it take (i.e. what speed factor) on a machine with a) IntelR CoreT2 Duo E6400 b) IntelR CoreT2 Duo E6600 c) IntelR CoreT2 Duo E6700 (Ball-park will do). I haven't been given the GHz speeds for these other processors, but a quick Google suggests they're all around 2.6GHz, give or take a bit. The computations for the simulation are numerically intensive; also much reading to & writing from RAM. For me being less technical it is hardly worth trying to do the editing. After posting this message i was searching through the bits 'n' pieces that came with this machine to find an XP recovery CD set. Making the windoze HD master again and installing XP took little more than about 20 mins - all the drivers necessary being already there... thought i was going to have a hunt on 'drivers guide'. I'd always wanted to avoid dualboot but this 2HD method seems better than partitioning. While i have only a couple of apps and a scanner to run on windoze - i still find certain DVDs a pain to run on ubuntu. I'm now happily watching my Telegraph compilation of previous wimbledons which was somehow prepared for windoze as RealPlayer and others didn't work properly. james

I've read a post on this on another forum and somehow it doesn't seem to work for me... ubuntu 8.04 seems quite clever. It finds the winblows drive and puts the necessary code at the bottom of the menu.lst file. I'd rather use dualboot with two drives as it is then easier for installing new ubuntu releases (IMHO). hard drives both standard IDE on a 2.6ghz desktop. master drive - ubuntu 8.04 slave drive - win2k (no reason other than i don't have a copy of XP... my only reason for wanting to do dualbooting is that i've got several apps and a scanner than i can't run on ubuntu) Following the beginning of the guide that worked fine - installing win2k on master and then connecting the master for ubuntu carefully switching the win2k disk to slave. I want ubuntu to load as default. I read through the forum listed menu.lst carefully taking note of what was said about needing to put the ammendments at the bottom of the file. Tried with IceWM first as suggested, and that was OK, so it pretty much had to be KDE. No idea how it can have happened, but its fixed now. When resetting the configuration so that lock becomes (Ctrl+Alt+d) in a text editor, of course, the minute you type the 'd', it drops you to a locked session without making the change! So the only way to get the d in is to do cut and paste. It is stuff like this that keeps blood flowing in the brain. Cheers Peter

Help keyboard madness!

This is a truly weird one. Installation is Mandriva 2008 One with KDE. Whenever the lower case d is pressed, the system instantly logs off the user and starts a new session. What on earth can be going on? Upper case D does not do it. Changing the keyboard makes no difference. Restarting makes no difference. We have done nothing I can think of to set this (and I would not know in any case where to set it). Anyone heard of anything like this ever? I've a feeling the solution to this and other problems is going to be Debian sooner rather than later.... But I'd really like to know how to figure out what on earth could be causing it. Al

Can on specify a default sort order for applications (as opposed to ls)?

Is it possible to specify a default sort order for all applications to use as opposed to just ls (and/or the default file manager)? I'd like to get files shown in date order rather than alphabetic order *everywhere*, is there some way to tell the system to do this? Even a way to tell Gnome or KDE apps would be useful. -- Chris Green

Encouraging applications to open source

I've just spent several weeks commissioning an electrical system using proprietary software which is (a) old, (b) no longer being developed, (c) free issue (you pay for the hardware not the software) and (d) buggy or at best limited. Ipswich ALUG meets: change of venue

Guys, For those who have been to the Ipswich meets recently (or have read the wiki meeting notes), you'll be well aware that we've been being squeezed out by the new poker league that's been set up on a Monday night, so I think it's time we did something about it. Changing the night wouldn't really help - it may inconvenience regulars who are happy with Monday, but also the only other mid-week night at The Milestone which didn't have live music on was definitely inconvenient to a few regulars. So, that leaves us with changing the venue. I propose we try out The Punch & Judy in Cardinal Park because it satisfies the main criteria we used when selecting The Milestone originally: - Adequate Car Parking nearby (preferably free) - Free Wi-Fi (preferably not web-authentication) - Cheap (but edible) food for anyone wanting to grab a bite - Reasonable beer - Enough space and quiet to grab a table or two where we won't be overly disturbed Full disclosure: the Punch & Judy is a family-type pub (potentially noisy) and there are a few poor reviews of the food service online. However, kids have to be out by 21:00 and the kids play area closes at 20:00, plus it's a Monday night and the pub is also fairly large so I'm hoping that shouldn't be an issue. Finally, the food may not great but at that time on that day, it should be fairly quiet and it's fairly cheap if two eat, plus there's certainly a bigger selection than there was at The Milestone. There we have it - I think we should try out this new venue on Monday the 21 July 2008. If anyone has any alternative venues they think would be a better choice (taking into account the criteria above), suggest them at the meet and if ppl think it would be an improvement, we can potentially try out further venues over the next few meets until we're happy with one. dual head monitor setup not working

Hullo there, I've bought a PNY geforce 7600GS graphics card, with VGA and dual link DVI. I then bought a second monitor - an HP w1907v widescreen with recommended res of 1440x900@60. The first monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 913N. I've had a setup similar working on another computer, also running debian, with a dual head matrox card and two identical monitors. I copied the config over and after much sweat and tears, altered and tweaked according to my Xorg logs warnings and hints. Both monitors refuse to work at the same time though. The only way I can get the widescreen to behave sensibly is using some bizarre xorg.conf. Here is the dual head one which won't drive both monitors, followed by the odd little conf that made the widescreen work, then the conf that works for the other setup, and finally the log file. http://debian.pastebin.com/m53fa4692 The log file is full of warnings about range - it looks as though it is ignoring my conf saying to only use the 1440x900. Full X from a remote client

Hi Folks, Not sure whether I'm asking the impossible here. CONTEXT: I'm sitting at machine A -- say 192.168.1.1 and I'm logged in to machine B -- say 192.168.1.2 AT A, I'm using X (with gnome and all that). AT this stage, B is not running X yet. I'm seeing B on an Xterm. WHAT I WANT: To start X (XFree86) on machine B, and have its full X, including the window-manager that would come up if U were sitting at B, come up on A. This would seem to imply that I need to use startx on B (via the login on A's Xterm), since the same startup scripts would need to be run on B so as to ensure that my "B experience" on A was the same as on B. It's OK for B's X root window to be encapsulated in a window on A. What I'm really after is the full X functionality, including the task-bar, the panel, and the various buttons I would normally see on B, so that I don't have to work out what commands to type! Am I bonkers? Or is there a way? (I've done this sort of thing in the past using xmx, which basically multiplexes a single X session across several other machines; but xmx is very sticky about the X resources being identical on all machines, which would not be the case here). I've done what the Ubuntu website says and gone to system > admin > update manager and installed the last batch of updates but it doesn't mention anything about the new version when I click on 'upgrade' again. Am I a) being a bit impatient or b) is there another (simple!) way round this? Oh yes, and is there anything important I need to do, that I have forgotten, before upgrading? Thanks. Anyone using Firefox 3.0 yet?

Has anyone here moved from Firefox 2.0.x to Firefox 3.0 yet? If so are there any big (or small) issues? My main problem is that my favourite add-on (Mozex) isn't available for Firefox 3.0 and looks like it may never be. There is an alternative (ItsAllText) but it's not so flexible and doesn't allow one Mozex facility that I do use (the ability to launch a local program from an arbitrary URL). One simple question occurs to me, can Firefox 3.0 be configured to call a text mode program (e.g. mutt in my case) on mailto: links? -- Chris Green

Gnome - Icons and file extensions

Hi, sorry about this folks but having a bit of a head scratching time with Gnome. A word processor and spreadsheet package I've used for years is softmaker office. It's a remnant from my Windows days and people have tried to convert me over to Abiword and Gnumeric but they keep failing, due to file compatibility issues mainly. However with this latest headache they might just win. Softmaker Office files and templates have *.tmd, *.tmv, *.pmv and *.pmd extensions. I always found this easy under KDE Kontrol Centre but as a fairly recent Gnome convert I was trying to change two things, and I'm struggling; 1. Set the correct application to open files with the extensions above. This I have now done. I was searching through the Gnome menus, synaptic and Googling for ages and in the end it was as simple as right clicking the file in nautilus and selecting properties, open with, add -> /home/martin/bin/office/textmaker etc. This sets the correct application for all files ending in *.tmd, etc 2. Change the icon for all files ending in *.tmd etc. This I cannot do. I can do it for individual files by right clicking in nautilus and selecting properties, clicking on the icon and browsing for different one, but it only does it for that one file say something called report.tmd, not all files ending in *.tmd. Is this correct behaviour or a bug? I know Gnome tries to be more transparent than KDEs change everything ideals, but I thought this might be a relatively easy thing to do for a window manager. I must be missing something easy like my booboo in item 1, but what? It's driving me mad. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks & regards, Martin

using ubuntu 7.10 fax modem chipset HSFi CX11252-41 I bought this modem from ebuyer a few months ago as someone had found drivers for it on opensuse ver 9... so i thought there was a good chance it would work in ubuntu. Fedora 9 startup scripts

Dear All, Before I upgraded from Fedora 8 to 9, the script /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit used to run hwclock --rctosys at boot time. Now it doesn't any more - but presumably something else does. GNOME/X problems

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04, which 95% of the time works just great. The other 5% if the time, the screen will just go grey when in use [It may actually be black, but with nothing else on the LCD to contrast it against it looks grey], and I'm unable to do anything (*). Ctrl-Alt-Backspace will rattle the disk, and I can hear the Ubuntu drumbeat that happens when GNOME starts, but nothing actually changes on screen. Ctrl-Alt-F1 will drop me to a command line; restarting gdm from here doesn't do anything other than re-present me with a back/grey screen. So any ideas from the readers as to the best way to restart my windowing environment without restarting the whole box? ...cannot get 'make' to work on either the Mac or the eeePC. Possibly I should have a /usr/bin/make but there's no sign of it. Oops. I get up to "Checking if your kit is complete. Looks good" and then I get: Writing Makefile for [whatever] -- NOT OK Running make test. Can't test without successful make. iptables - old rules?

Debian Testing (uptodate) - kernel 2.6.24 If I list my Iptables rules they include rules which contain the domain names of two of my previous ISPs but I can't find what is generating these rules. I use Firestarter at present and previously used Guarddog. I think that it was Guarddog which generated these rules but I have long ago uninstalled (purged) that package and nothing of it remains. If I use Firestarter to stop the firewall all I'm left with is: Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination If I then restart the firewall all those old rules re-appear even though there is nothing in the Firestarter configuration to generate them. I find the iptables syntax a complete mystery which is why I use packages like Guarddog and Firestarter. Any Evolution+Compiz users out there

On my last machine and to an even greater extent on my new one I have a strange cursor artifact problem with the compose message box in evolution. (both machines are using a nvidia card and the non-free drivers) an 8800GT and Quadro FX500 respectively. I think it started to occur when I started using Compiz, on my old machine it only appeared after gnome had been up for some time..on the new one it appears most of the time. The effect is that copies of (or copies of portions of) the cursor get "stuck" in the message window. This happens most frequently when cutting or pasting text or moving the cursor position with the arrow keys but it can also happen when typing in which case the bottom few pixels of the cursor remain in previous positions within the text..also sometimes when a line wraps a copy of the cursor remains at the end. Moving the window will remove the existing ones, so I was thinking it was a graphics/windowmanager glitch but it only seems to happen in Evolution. Allo, and no worries. The option is on by default - I've tried it on and off, with and without USB2 support. It's fine in the BIOS and the original stages, but as soon as the second prompt to choose language appears ... pff. not a sausage. Google says I'm not the only person who's hit this issue, but none of the suggested fixes are working / possible (ie they involve changing BIOS options I don't have). Someone here has rather generously offered a keyboard, but somebody else (from elsewhere) has already posted an adaptor - which was unexpected, as I was just asking them for advice on the matter. After a very long absence I've a huge number of ALUG items to look through, so now I'm back online (c/o a Vodafone broadbean dongle) I'll be going through the backlog of more than two years and maybe asking questions which have been covered before if they come up before I get to their discussion. The first of these questions is, has anyone written a script to drop into Linux of any flavour to allow it and the aforementioned Vodafone dongle to talk to each other? I have an Asus Eee, and am not overly chuffed with their dumbed-down version of Linux - 'My Network Places', 'My Computer', 'My this, that and the other'. Yeeuch! And MSN? I ask you! And the book of destructions states that 'Removing the pre-installed software is not allowed' Hmmm. We shall see about _THAT_! Hello again all, I've now built said PC (with the card suggested, many thanks for that, although haven't been able to test it yet), and have finally found time to start the Ubuntu-ing process... but my USB keyboard is magically forgotten about as soon as I enter the install process proper (I'm using the alternate installer). I lack either a PS2 keyboard or the USB=>PS2 adapter, so to save buying another keyboard (apparently using an adapter won't always solve this issue, otherwise I'd just fork out for one of those) would anyone be willing to let me give a spare one of theirs a change of scenery for a day or so? Or I could bring it along to the meet for collection (along with a beverage of your choice) if it's not direly urgent that it's returned ASAP? :) Cheers all, ~Adam

backups for the very unsophisticated...?

Any thoughts or experience on a backup tool for a very unsophisticated user? Like, one who cannot really be trusted to copy in the right direction from a hard drive to a usb stick? Who is quite capable of thinking that the way to get rid of a file on usb stick is to move it to the desktop. A brilliant and intelligent person but with a tech blind spot who on the previous machine was used to backing up folders to floppies labelled with the same name as the folder, which worked fine for years, but the new machine has no floppy drive... And of course fewer and fewer external people will accept data on floppies now. I'm considering the following: One usb stick labelled backup, with instructions to only use it for backups and keep it in the same reasonably secure place. This would back up the /home/user directory in its entirety. The instruction would be: do this every Friday, or more often if lots of revisions have been done. kde keep for the actual backup tool. It seems simpler than the gnome one, pybackpack, though he is running Gnome. We need as few options as possible! A second usb stick to be used for carrying files around and transferring them to other people (in addition to email). Any other thoughts appreciated. These are mostly text files with some graphics, ie the volume is not huge. The home directory will fit on a 2G usb drive for the forseeable future. Al

Moving firefox passwords between machines

Hi Folks, I've had an oldish firefox running for a few years one one machine, and have accumulatd a few dozen login username/passwords for various websites. I'm now doing most of my browsing using iceweasel on a new machine, and I'd like to "copy" all those passwords over to the new setup. Passwords are stored in encrypted form in a file signons.txt (old machine) or signons2.txt (new machine), and each is in a directory ~/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default, where the "xxxxxxxx" is a random-looking string (different between the two) and presumably serves as an encryption key. So I can't just copy signons.txt to signons2.txt -- it doesnt work! (tried it). One way, of course, is to trek through edit>preferences>passwords in firefox on the old machine, and get them up in the browser, unencrypted, and read them off when I need them. This of course is tedious! Any suggestions for how to port the lot from firefox to iceweasel? (I had no problem simply copying my bookmarks.html from one to the other; but then that's just plain text). Still on the nursery slopes as far as bash commands I'm afraid but have, once again, realised how very useful they can be. How do you learn what to type in in any given situation, though? Export emails

Hello Alug I made enquiries to the list some time ago about exporting emails from Firefox to a folder on a separate drive. I received several replies after which I downloaded an add-on and could export emails successfully. One responder was James (don't know any other details) who said he exported regularly from Firefox; I'm wondering if he (or anyone else) could comment on how well the Folder & Subfolder Structure copies, or the method they use. I find I often have to make separate folder on the target drive, then copy the emails into this, then it works well. Thanks

Program to do pretty graphs of monthly network transfers

Hi all, I'm looking for suggestions for software that will draw some pretty graphs of the number of bytes transferred over an interface over the past day, week and month. MRTG (for eg.) only seems to do network speed monitoring. I'm looking into RRDTool, but I'm not sure yet if this is what I want. A very very quick look at ntop and iptraf suggests that it's for measuring transfer speeds, and not what I want. Basically I want something that's persistent across reboots and power-offs. Something that will tell me that in the past minute, I transferred 1MB, past 10mins: 10MB, past day: 12MB, past week: 1Gb, past month: 8GB. You get the point. Could be a command line tool, or ncurses interface. Nice pretty graphs would be a bonus (graphical toolkit on X11 or web-based solution). Has to run on Linux, and be at the very least, free as in beer. Anyone got any recommendations? Many thanks, Srdjan

duff switch?

This not strictly a Linux/OSS question (unless the fact that the router in question is running openwrt counts), but I ask because there are bound to be network experts here and I'm going crazy. I have an Asus WL500G wireless router connected to my DSL router. This lets me partition my network into two in a classic screened subnet architecture. Thusly: outside | [DSL]---------DMZ hosts------- | | | [ASUS] | | inside (both wired and wireless) DMZ net is 192.168.1.0, inside net is 192.168.10.0 As I said, the Asus is running x-wrt (a flavour of openwrt with a nice web interface on top). The Asus has 4 lan ports, 1 wan port and the wifi interface. I have the following situation: 1. No problem with wifi. Any and all wifi devices I configure can connect, they can see all relevant hosts (including my dnsmasq DNNS/DHCP server) and can reach the 'net. So all hunkydory. 2. No problem with any /single/ wired lan connection in any of the lan ports (i.e all is good to go as in the wifi connection). So again, all hunkydory (and it doesn't matter which lan port I use.) 3. But - as soon as I connect any second wired device to the Asus, I get connection failures (ICMP errors "Destination Host Unreachable"). Oddly, if I leave a device connected running a ping I get most traffic dropped (of the order of 90%) but intermittently I get connection responses. 4. Now the bit that really confuses me. If I now connect an external switch to any port on the Asus and then connect any new wired device through that switch, it all works fine. So - have I just got a duff switch in the Asus (and if so, why the hell does it work when I connect another switch)? Or should I be looking for something else? Any recommendations for a PCI Wifi card?

Greetings all. :) I'm currently engaged in building my new PC, but have hit a rather annoying hurdle when it comes to finding a linux-friendly PCI wifi card ... mostly due to the constant and unadvertised chipset changes they love to pull. Can anyone suggest a good current card - bonus points if it's in stock at ebuyer - that will work reliably and with minimal bloodshed? Many pre-emptive thanks, ~Adam

"apt-get update" seems to update apt-get, the update icon went grey and remained grey while i did some other work, i rebooted and the orange icon returns with the same new package to be updated.
