Hi All We have two catch ups planned for next weekend for those interested in joining us: Swim #9 - Tadpole Bridge to Shifford Lock (a longun - wrap up well!) - Saturday 10.30 Swim #14 - Pinkhill Lock to Cassington Cut (a mediumun!) - Sunday 11.00 Please let me know if you would like to join us so that we can organise venues/cars etc Thanks Jo

OSS Swim the Thames #14 - Pinkhill Lock to Cassington Cut - Sat24Sep11@10:30am

/In our relentless journey downstream in the Thames towards the Teddington Obelisk, and beyond, the next step (stroke?) will be Swim #14 from Pinkhill Lock to Cassington Cut, or thereabouts. We now have the delights of the Georgian Toll Bridge at Swinford to look forward to. One shilling to cross but free to swim under. (5p in new money . . .)To make the swim worthwhile, but keeping it to this side of excessive, it corresponds to Swim #26 and part of #27 in The Book according to Michael Worthington and is around 3.3km, or less if we decide to get out earlier. We will meet at the car park at Swinford at 10:30am on Sat24Sep11, marked by the Green arrow, on the north side of the Thames (Thanks to Jo for the local knowledge): http://g.co/maps/t3mbk We can then shuttle (5p at the ready) up to the housing estate at Meadow Way, park, at 'A', and make our final preparations in the field, Green arrow, on the way to the lock: http://g.co/maps/46tjw We will then walk to Pinkhill Lock, jump in and swim down towards Swinford, under the Georgian Toll bridge (better practice butterfly beforehand), skirting Eynsham Lock, and on to an exit on the south bank and the Thames path, opposite the Cassington Cut. This is where the Wytham Great Wood, on the south bank, starts receding from the Thames Path (Green Arrow): http://g.co/maps/gfu47 Advanced tri-athlete party to keep eyes peeled to avoid going on to King's Lock, which is another 3.5km away, and is to be swim #15 on Sun09Oct11! We will then walk back to the Swinford car park, get changed, shuttle drivers to cars left at Meadow Way (More 5p at the ready) before putting the Landlady at the nearby Talbot to the test for lunch (Green arrow): http://g.co/maps/gcaz6 Look forward to meeting all the regulars but to all those recently inspired by David Walliams we'd welcome you to come along and sample the water with us as well. Catch-up swims 12 and 13

Having completed swims 8, 9, 10 and 11 over three tiring days last week I'm looking to continue my catch-up with swims 12 and 13 on Friday 23rd, just in time for swim 14 the following day. In view of the falling temperature of the water (I got pretty cold, as well as knackered, doing swims 9 and 10 in one day) I'm proposing to have a leisurely warm-up lunch at B Hythe after swim 12 and before swim 13. Sef has kindly offered to swim no 13 with me, Ann Chance might be doing no 12 and Mary Gill is possibly interested in both. If anyone else out there is interested, my proposed timetable is as follows: 11.00am Start walking from The Ferryman at Bablock Hythe back to Appleton (2.45k) (OR if other cars available, shuttle cars to Appleton)11.45am - 1.15pm Swim no 121.30pm onwards: Hot soup and coffee (or something similarly light but hot) at the Ferryman (last orders for food about 1.50)3.00pm Start to move off, nice and warm3.30pm Meet Sef at Pinkhill to shuttle cars back to Ferryman4.00pm - 6.00pm Swim no 13 to Pinkhill6.30pm Go home! Any other takers? I'd be delighted. I ought to say my swimming speed isn't fast (2k an hour) - and that the water temperature is fast becoming very brisk! Peter

Catch-up swims 8 onwards

To those who know who I am, and to those who don't, I am now back from cycling to the Pyrenees and have read with despair the excellent progress being being made by you all, compounded by the fact that you've swum today and will swim again tomorrow. This will leave me about 25k behind you all. But I despair not - Walliams is our example! I am proposing to catch up in time for swim no 14 on Sep 24th from Pinkhill Weir/Lock. This is very short notice I know, but if anyone cares to join me on any of the dates and swims below I'd be delighted and v grateful: Monday 12th, Tues 13th and Wed 14th Sep: I propose to try to do swims 8, 9, 10 and 11 over these 3 days (Radcot Lock - Tadpole Bridge - Shifford Lock - Newbridge - Appleton Weir), probably by carving up the total distance of about 18.4k into three roughly equal lengths of about 6k or so each. My daughter has foolishly agreed to accompany me on the towpath for safety and any help required but with only one car there'll inevitably be walking to the start or back from the finish etc. Monday 12th will be afternoon, Tues 13th will probably span the lunchtime and Wed 14th I hope to have wrapped up by lunchtime or early afternoon. Friday 23rd Sep: Swims 12 and 13, 6.2k, Appleton - Bablock Hythe - Pinkhill - just in time for swim 14 the following day! Anyone out there interested and able to escape on weekdays for this? I'd rather not swim alone but don't want to get left behind! The above is slightly subject to possible change but I hope not. I fear the weather on Monday will be rubbish, but too bad! Peter McMunn

That - Dee was indeed a most memorable moonlight swim. i smiled though at your description of "an air of silence". I recall that when we got in up at the bridge there were some kids in an off road machine driving wildly around the fields shining a search light into the river. I suspect that when they spotted us (drifting downriver in the dark) they suddenly realised that there were loonies about!
