River Thames, Berkshire: Marlow – Bourne End; 7th November

I have suggested a swim for this section of the Thames on the Facebook discussion board. It may be too far from Reading for some RATS but I thought I'd bring it to your attention. I hope there'll be a good response, if it's not too late in the season for a slightly longer swim - though as you will see if you read my posting it can be shortened to fit your endurance (or lengthened). Marlow - Bourne End - Cookham swim

Hi Everyone, I did a recce yesterday between Marlow and Cookham, as Lindsay requested. There is a car park at a playing field on the north bank of the river below Marlow Lock, immediately on the west side of the bridge where the A404 Marlow Bypass crosses it. There is a tiny inlet where entry to the water would be easy. There are several suitable destinations, i.e. places with pubs nearby. First would be Spade Oak Warf (1.87 miles). The Spade Oak pub is a quarter mile away across fields and along a little lane. There is a public car park as well as the pub's. This would be easiest for parking. Second exit would be at The Bounty (2.34 miles), right on the river's south bank. There is no road access to The Bounty, the nearest being in the vicinity of the Upper Thames Sailing Society at Bourne End on the opposite bank. We could swim across or there's a footpath on the railway bridge just down the river (about half a mile down, across and up again). Parking is limited so we might need to find places in nearby streets. Third exit would be just north of Cookham on the west bank (3.16 miles) then walk the footpath across fields to The Pound at Cookham (a third of a mile); the nearest pub is The Crown. Fourth exit is at The Ferry pub beside the bridge at Cookham (3.52 miles). Parking may be possible in nearby Odney Road. Footpaths run beside the river bank virtually the whole way. I can probably arrange drivers to ferry swimmers from the end point to the start and walkers to follow on the bank in case anyone needs assistance. Parking at the weekend is usually crowded, the easiest being at Spade Oak, and perhaps that's far enough. The Bounty would be great though, being right on the river and rural. I quite fancy the full distance but perhaps that's a bit too serious. The best date for me would probably be Sunday 31st October. I hope to check out the stretch Aston to Hurley (3 miles) which is between Henley and Marlow. I may do that today. Henley to Aston is another possibility worth a look. Anyone got any thoughts on these suggestions (including dates)? Is it too far from Reading? Nick P.S. Good to meet a few RATS last Sunday at Mapledurham.

Sonning swim - 17th October 2pm

Well, what a lovely swim Jeremy, Nick, Andrea and I enjoyed today at Mapledurham. Not as sunny during the swim as the forecasters had led us to expect, but sunny afterwards which was nice while changing! Lotte, sorry you didn't make it for the swim, but thanks for the hot drinks afterwards! Nick, good to meet you. Look forward to hearing when you have done a reccie for a Marlow area swim, very much up for that. Now on to a Sonning swim as per the subject line... on Sunday 17th October, Andrea and I will be swimming from Sonning eye (meet opposite French Horn hotel, RG4 6TN, at 2pm ) towards Shiplake, with the intention of going as far as St. Patricks Stream (2.1Km), or adjusting the distance depending on current, weather, our ambition or what have you! Quite a few get out points, so plenty of options. There's public parking for a few cars opposite the French Horn adjacent to the riverside green, which is also the entry point. If anybody would like to join us they would be very welcome - let us know or just turn up. We, Lindsay, Lotte. Victoria and Jeremy, are meeting for a swim at Mapledurham on Sunday 10 October 2010 at 10:00am. If you would like to join us you would be very welcome. Let us know if you are thinking of coming or just turn up on the day. Park at Mapledurham lock end (but on the Purley housing estate side, (somewhere around the junction of Wintringham Way and Colyton Way). We will then walk upstream as far as Thames beach and swim back to the lock. If the mood takes us we can walk around the lock and swim a bit further downstream to another beach. I'm hoping the gloves I've ordered will have arrived by then . . . Regards Jeremy

A bit last minute - Lindsay and I are going to squeeze in one last after work swim before the evenings get too dark. Usual format - meet on the green - a few parking spaces available - opposite the French Horn in Sonning. We plan to meet at 5:30pm to make the most of the light for a 5:45pm start. If you would like to join us you'd be very welcome - let us know so we can look out for you, or just turn up. Traffic in Sonning at this time of day is quite heavy over the singe file bridge Jeremy & Lindsay

Posted on behalf on Chris Watkins for those who aren't on Facebook. For those that are: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=55781602829&topic=15952&post=96288 A repeat of the swim we did at the start of the year in Pangbourne West Berks, but this time it will be longer, more like a mile. It will be in the morning of Sunday the 14th of November. We will finish near to a pub with log fires, hot chocolate and lots of hot food for those who want to hang around for a short while after. I will send out a map of the route, timings etc in about a week or so. But lets go for a 10.00am start at the Train Station car park. There are lots of exit points on the swim for those who want to jump out early.
