People of the Isis! It is time for the triumphal entrance to Oxford (part 3). With this fine scholarly city as our backdrop, we will be epically engaged in an elemental struggle: humankind and nature. From Danger to Folly.
No really. We will be starting at Danger Bridge at Port Meadow and swimming down to Folly Bridge, a distance of 3.09km. The route will take us past such exciting Oxford sites as the station! allotments! Osney Mead industrial estate! Avis car hire! the ice rink! We will also be a part of Oxford's great swimming traditions - at Port Meadow, where swimming galas were held in times past, and at Folly Bridge, the starting line for the annual police vs. carworkers race of former years.
As the route goes through the city, shuttling is going to be a little complicated but the plan is to meet at* 10.30am *on* Sunday 13th* at the Hinksey pool car park (marked with green arrow) off Abingdon Road:
We will then shuttle some cars and all swimmers to the Walton Well car park at Port Meadow (green arrow):
Walton Well carpark has recently started charging and it is possible that Hinksey has too, so if you're driving bring a pound coin or two.
We'll then swim down to Folly Bridge. We'll have a small walk along Abingdon Road from our exit point to the car so bring something you can walk in - less than 5 mins but on pavement. If we can find closer parking possibilities, we can relocate before we start.
We'll then have a pub lunch at the Head of the River, a converted riverside warehouse on Folly Bridge.
The throw-downers who did this swim last weekend say the river was a toasty 11 degrees and a good time was had by all.
See you there, toyers with danger, flirters with folly,
Jeremy & Sef & the indomitable inexpectatum pleco of the Isis

Danger and Folly! Always the best combination - I shall be there with bells on... well, perhaps just 4 wetsuits on instead!

I aim to be there - quite possibly in one and three-quarters wetsuits. (Shortie over swim skin).
If anybody ends up getting really chilly and needs emergency access to central heating, kettles, power (I know hot showers are bad for you!), let me know. I live in east oxford, about 5 minutes drive from Hinksey pool car park. So don't suffer in silence (especially if you are one of the kind people who has given me lifts in the past!)
Chloe.
