XP will let you choose your install partition, so it shouldn't trash the other partitions. It might puke over the MBR, so be prepared to fix that afterwards.
If I install it on the Acer's HDD, it will scribble over everything, whether it concerns it or not.
Is that the recovery/ factory restore install? Booting from an install CD should, after you agree to the EULA, present a white on blue list of disks, partitions and free space.

The XP installer was written in 2001, so it still uses text mode for the first part of the install.
